$7 for an 8oz coffee when I can get 16oz for the same price and better tasting some where else. It’s a no for me.

I had a great experience my first time here. I ordered a brown sugar latte after being suggested by the staff. The staff was very friendly, and the place was very clean and there is a nice atmosphere.

Really wanted to like this place after seeing so many posts promoting it online and was on our list to try. Went with another couple and got 4 different drinks and none of them were good enough to keep drinking. I tasted mine and couldn’t taste the pecan syrup so asked for more and the staff was great and mentioned they are organic so the flavor isn’t strong. I get being organic but if you can’t taste it then what’s the point? (Couldn’t taste them in the other cold nrew that was ordered either) The physical layout was also not functional on a busy weekend. You enter from the back side of the building but immediately walk into a line and it was confusing who was waiting to order and who was waiting to pick up. We spent $20 on 2 drinks and a pop tart to throw most of it away 😢Great concept and staff but mediocre execution of the product. From the other great reviews, it could’ve just been an off day. Hope to come back and give it another go in a few months.

The food was good, the atmosphere was fun, and it is always a good sign when the restaurant owner is out there working as hard as his employees. Definitely recommend.

First time at Refuge Coffee and Beer Garden it’s pretty hidden so this time I didn’t miss it . I got a Cafe Latte with Almond Milk and Vanilla Syrup , super delicious latte and our barista was so kind ! The music was one of my favorite moments spending time there , I love old music from the 70’s and 80’s ! The atmosphere was cozy . Loved the vibe !

Very chill LoFi music in the background, spacious area to sit inside and outside. Dog friendly, delicious blueberry muffins!! Overall great experience! Will be back!!

Refuge Coffee & Beer is seriously an amazing spot. Super chill, very relaxing and most importantly very welcoming atmosphere. Their coffees are delicious and their service is top notch. Keep an eye out for their events, Singo (song bingo) & Trivia nights are a blast! The owners have done an excellent job of making everyone feel included and part of the family. 💕

I wanted to love this place, but I’m so incredibly disappointed. My family and I went for the first time on 7/19. We were so excited to try this place and we honestly had a great time. Unfortunately they were having all kinds of system issues. I closed out our tab on my card, then about 5 min later my husband went to close out as well, since the system was having issues he just went a head and paid in cash. We realized the error the next morning and I called to explain we had double paid. The gentleman I spoke with said no problem we will take care of this for you, the system is still having issues so I can’t do it now but it will get taken care of. I called to follow up the next day bc I saw the charge went through (I know it can take a few days but I just wanted to make sure they were handling it on there end). The woman I spoke with was very condescending and needed to “check my story” with the barista who was working. I’ve called almost every day since then trying to speak to a manager who is always to busy to call me back. I even spoke to barista who served us that night and she apologized for her mistake and said she would make sure she spoke to the manager on our behalf. Unfortunately I still have not heard back from the manager and there has been no attempt on their end to make it right. I didn’t want to bash a small business so I waited before leaving a review but at this point I don’t think we will be going back to refuge, and I would encourage others to find another establishment to patronize. Edit to add: After reading the owner's response, I realized there must be a misunderstanding. I went to the store this morning to resolve the issue. It appears the owner tried to address my concerns initially, but for reasons unknown we couldn't connect earlier. I have no record of her attempts to contact me, which prolonged the resolution. After 12 days of back and forth, it seems I will be refunded for the double payment within 7-10 business days (although 10 days later and I have still yet to receive one). I understand the owner is very protective of her business and staff, and my review upset her. My initial opinion was based on my frustration with the situation and my interpretation of our interaction. While I may not return, I wish her and her business the best.

First time there and I loved it! Family Friendly and outdoor playground for the kids!! Love it!!

Incredible beer and coffee place. Close to 1604 on Shaenfield. Staff was very helpful with suggestions, which helps because they have an extensive menu of local beers and flavors of coffee. Next time we'll definitely plan for trying out the food trucks located around the outdoor seating area. Lots of umbrellas for shade and places for kids to play. We got a pistachio white mocha and a Romanian Socata beer. Both were delicous.

It was great! The place is small but cozy with an outdoor area--I saw Cornhole and ample place to run around for kiddos. I got a matcha iced tea with lavender and even before the lavender was added (forgot to ask for it initially) the matcha was delicious even without sugar--did not have grass flavor and left a beautiful after taste. I got whole milk, but I have a vegan friend that was able to order a milk alternative, so vegan friendly as well as locally sourced milk from their own admission. And the straws were biodegradable!! Had a strange texture, but were sturdy and did not have papery flavor to leech into the drink. There were indoor and outdoor seating options and also games like monopoly and uno for larger groups. Overall cozy and a great experience!! Will definitely be back. I will say I did pay 7.30 for my drink, which is a bit expensive, but worth the price imo. I recommend this place!!

This place is great! Always something good on tap, and the service is great! Bonus - the kids get to wear themselves out.

Stopped here on a whim for a place to get some work done. The cortado was perfection. Definitely will be back!

Refuge is the place to go to enjoy great company over delicious coffee, beer, and wine. I've gone several times since they've opened, and each time I have been blown away with the staff's incredible hospitality and excellent coffee. I'm usually very snobbish when it comes to coffee. Refuge delivers on all counts. I'm a particular fan of their single origin pour over. Highly recommend! This really has become a staple in the local area. The community that comes out is vibrant. It's great to come and study and work or to meet a friend. I've come by right at open for coffee on my morning commute and enjoyed catching up with friends in the evening over local craft beers. Seriously, this place is a hidden gem.

Steph was amazing, she kept a steady pace and positive attitude throughout the night, and her counter service was non stop. Michala was also so sweet and had great customer service

Service very slow. We were 2nd in line and waited 16 minutes before ordering. The person in front of us only ordered 1 drink and a muffin. It wasn't until we started to order that someone came to help people behind us. Why did it take so long? We saw you standing right there discussing beer to someone. We ordered 2 hot drinks, Americano and chai tea. The Americano was good but the chai tea was served room temp. We did take it back and they would remake it hot. Hoping they did as we were outside, and not just microwave it to heat up. While waiting for our drinks, our person stopped to talk with 2 people that just walked in, which added to our wait time, which eventually turned into 24 minutes overall, not including the remake. Not sure if we will go back. The drinks were good. Being our first time there, we may give it another try, but not too sure. If so, we will re- evaluate. It just seemed to us, we were not the focal point when waiting in line and ordering. There was a lot of talking between staff and not putting enough attention to the customer.

Refuge is a wonderful coffee and beer bar. The service today, Steph, was amazing! The coffee selection is really good and accommodating to dietary needs. Plus, they have a great selection of local beers and ciders.

This place is a hidden gem. It's got delicious coffee and beer. I love flights so my boyfriend and I got a flight each . The staff is lovely and personable. I didn’t even need to taste their excellent coffee or chat with the delightful barista to be impressed. Refuge Coffee and Beer truly understands the significance of Memorial Day. The thoughtful setup of a table to honor those who have lost loved ones in battle of war or after speaks volumes about their community spirit and respect. Their latte flight was a fantastic way to explore their offerings, and I discovered the amazing Honey I’m Good latte. We will definitely be coming back for more! This place has the best vibe for coffee, pizza, and honoring the fallen soldiers of the military. I highly recommend this coffee house. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to be here. Karaoke Friday, ice cream comes here every now and then. This place is amazing.

We love refuge coffee and beer. The best coffee shop in San Antonio by far. I got my coffee from Wigglesworth. The coffee was so good it "wiggled" its way above my expectations and it was "worth" every penny. The atmosphere is awesome, whether you're sitting inside or outside, it has all the vibes. Great place to come with kids as well as they have a playground and a few games for kids and families to take advantage of.

This place has easily become my favorite locations to catch up on work and sip on some coffee/tea. The past few times I've visited, Stef (barista) has been so welcoming and accommodating. She ensured my pastry was warm and offered to lower the music as I worked. Such a positive experience! Thank you, Stef, for being so kind! I will be returning!

Refuge coffee has everything you need: coffee, beer, and pizza. It is a unique property with indoor seating as well as picnic tables outside. There is also a play area for the children. Highly recommended.

Word of mouth got me into this spot. A very laid back vibe with a great beer/wine selection, and excellent coffee too! Steph was an excellent host and very savvy about all the beers they had! Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves coffee or beer, and wants to experience a new spot with a unique selection!

Great local coffee shop around the corner. Bold Americano flavors. I don't come for the sugary drinks, just strong well balanced coffee with locally sourced ingredients. Horrible with names, but I believe Melanie helped me.

We are new to this place, but so far love it! Great atmosphere for kids and adults. My boys enjoy a lemonade and playground while the hubs and I enjoy a coffee and beer. Steph who helped us figure out what drinks to get was very kind and helpful!

The coffee is delicious but the dessert is need more options . Outside area is nice but the there are Insects who fights with me on my dessert and coffee 😂🫢 However, it is very nice and different place to go.

I go to a lot of coffee shops around San Antonio because I just love coffee. This location and the coffee here is amazing. It’s beautiful outside the building and the inside is even more inviting. Cee ,the owner, is super sweet and personable. She’s always walking around interacting with everyone. Cee, nick, and all of the baristas make the place feel really warm and welcoming. Would 100% recommend

I had a great Americano, and my hubby had a beer from their selections. We sat outside on the picnic tables and played games that the shop provided. Fun times with friends.

This mama loves hitting up refuge about once a week now! Coffee and a playground - Say no more! But truly, the atmosphere here is very family friendly. My kids play hard here and they are freely welcomed to be loud and wild. And we never feel rushed to leave. My friends and I are grateful for places like these to help us get out throughout the week and feel like everyone can enjoy their time (adults and kids alike). My first coffee order was a mocha latte and it was a little sweet for my liking but now I do a plain latte with half and half and it’s absolutely perfect! My go to for now on.

I was so excited to see this place open. It is family friendly with an open setting area inside and then a huge outdoor space with a play jungle gyms on site. Games are available to play (board games and outdoor games). The games and swings also have a sign up form for when it gets busy and people get a turn. SA needs more places like this and so happy that one opened so near to us. Oh and they have a pizza food truck parked there and it’s so delicious!! Don’t want pizza? Take a walk on the other side of the fence to the food truck yard.

Love this new place! The service was very good, has great atmosphere, the indoor and the outdoor space is awesome! I do wish they had more pastry/food available to go with the drinks but we'll definitely be back on a regular basis!

I love come here no matter what time of day. If I want a coffee, a beer, or even just a refreshing tea or lemonade there is always something for me! The play area keeps my son entertained for hours, and there are always people we know or people we meet and see again. It’s literally a small town coffee shop in the big city! Never a dull moment, the owners are amazing, and truthfully it’s somewhere we go at least 2-3 times a week as a family, and during the day it’s a great change of pace from sitting in my office so if you’re looking for a great spot, this is THE GREAT SPOT!!!!

Refuge is a little slice of heaven in the 78254 area. The owners are amazing people and the staff is incredible. Coffee is always delicious, beer is always cold, and the baked goods are yummy. Plenty of safe space for kids to play and awesome space for adults and parents to relax.

As a new mom, I’m sooo glad this place exists — and that it’s near our place. Husband and his friend can go get their beer fix, while baby and I don’t have to get left behind at home. I also appreciate that their restroom has an actual changing table (not the Koala Kare foldable ones) in it with some baby supplies.

This place is AMAZING. The owners and staff are super kind and welcoming. There's a lot of space outdoors, perfect for the little ones to run around (also a nice playground and games). The bathrooms are always clean, and the place is always clean as well. The coffee drinks are so good. They also have delicious beer, lots of fun family-friendly events, and a food truck called Fiamma Pizzeria. They make wood fire brick oven pizza and lots of other Italian food. I 100% recommend! 👏🫧🤸‍♀️🎤🍺☕️🍕

Great little family friendly coffee & beer garden! They even offer flights for coffee, beer and wine! I'm a sucker for flights so I can try one of everything! I recommend trying the "Honey, I'm Good" latte, it was so flavorful! The Matcha is also good here so much so that our kids stole it from us! I also recommend trying their giant poptarts! The one we had was cherry lime and SO delicious. They have a Pizza Food Truck that is on site and also very delicious it's wood fired right there in front of you so you know it's yummy and fresh! They have both indoor seating with board games inside and restrooms, and outdoor seating (picnic tables) with yard games, a playground, and shaded seating! Definitely a great stop for a family outing.

This place is amazing! Grabbed a couple of beers while the kids played. Local beers on tap were AMAZING!! Make sure to try the pizza truck while you are there. The coffee is out of this world also! The best place to chill or work. Highly recommended!!

Such a great atmosphere! The owners are wonderful, and the staff has gotten larger and more knowledgeable with every visit. Kid friendly, patio seating with play ground outside. Lots of activities to keep kids entertained. The pizza is done by food truck on premises, which is delicious. My spouse and I come to have background noise and good, local craft beer while reading or completing school work. They keep thinking of more opportunities to engage with the community, and I could not recommend Refuge enough!

Super chill space, love to come here for a beer and read or do school work. The owners are wonderful and really set up a space for people to connect or relax. Keep this place nice so we can all enjoy it for years to come.

This place is a great business to visit, especially with a group of people. I had a nice beer while my wife and son enjoyed a cold coffee drink. The live music was not bad either.

This is definitely my new favorite place!! Not only is the location a great place to relax, but it's like a getaway close to home where my kids can play, and I can grab a delicious coffee and enjoy some time with friends or just relaxing. As if that weren't already enough, this is by far the best cup of coffee I have had in a very long time! The owners have gone to great lengths to source exceptional beans, and even their dairy is grass-fed and from a farm not far from Austin. I appreciate businesses that do the hard work to provide their customers with quality, locally sourced ingredients when possible, and this attention to detail absolutely shows up in the flavor of the coffee. Part of me selfishly wants Refuge to stay a hidden gem, but I also want everyone to be able to enjoy!!

Tried Refuge for the first time the other day based on all the positive reviews. It’s a mom and pop shop so I’ll go easy on them. Let me start off by saying the coffee is pretty good. It is local and organic which is great but doesn’t justify the price for a small 12oz. (Which is their only size for a hot drink) I’d pay more $ to get a few extra sips of caffeine! I’d recommend their standard size to be a 16oz if that’s all they offer. That may just be a personal preference. My main issue was when I ordered a pastry poptart they said that the one I wanted had to be pulled from the freezer so I asked if they could warm it up. They gave it to me frozen (most likely by accident) I asked for it to be warmed up since they forgot and they did. However the pastry was still completely frozen in the center. Also, that morning they were completely out of mocha. Which most of their specialty coffee is mocha based. I wanted to get the mocha peanut butter drink ‘closer to the heart’ maybe next time. Also, I’d like to know why they charge a fee in addition to the taxes? Genuinely curious. I left pretty disappointed. I will come back to try their beer and pizza cause I think they may deserve another shot. To end on a positive note, the owners seemed nice.

Was a great first visit. Lots to sample, sip and enjoy. Hot or cold. Tall or short. They seem to be off to a great start. I’ll be back!

Really enjoyed my first visit to Refuge. The tap list for beer is diverse, and they don't have any bad beers on the wall. I had the iced coffee as well as a couple of beers. The iced coffee was bold, and had PERFECT flavor. Needs no sugar or cream. The atmosphere is inviting and great for adults and families, with a playground for the kids. They have food trucks as well. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The bathrooms were clean and they had changing tables, diapers, wipes, and feminine hygiene products. Who does this??? They do. Obviously they care. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could.

Cool new coffee spot. I had the Closer to the Heart Mocha (mocha and peanut butter) and it was delectable! I dig their taste in tunes too.

Great new coffee and Beer! spot. Inviting atmosphere and plenty of space to hang out for the whole family (kid playground outside). Friendly and knowledgeable staff serving true organic coffee, not the “stamp of approval” USDA organic. Go and see for yourself!
