Washington
18/05/2023: The undisputed champion of Italian subs in the DMV !!!
10/05/2023: Ok so I have lived in noma for 5yrs and I can't believe I have never heard of this spot. The deli sandwiches are huge, it took me two meals to finish the sandwich. I love their extensive selection of wine. Plus they have a plethora of authentic Italian items... From cookies, to pasta, and canoli chells and filling! 🤤

Rose's Luxury

Washington
19/05/2023: The food was poorly conceived and badly prepared, the atmosphere was loud, the seating was uncomfortable, and the service was good. We started with the cucumber salad, which was an ominously dark concoction which hid whatever virtues the cucumbers might have acquired in life under spicy, well, glop. The menu said it was grilled, but as a salad, it was rightly served at room temperature. This was a warning that I should not have ignored. The next dish was Colonne Pompei, described as pasta with walnut pesto. What wasn’t described was that the pesto was made with arugula, not basil. To make things worse, it tasted like the chef wanted to double-down on the arugula by adding vinegar. It was served barely warm, hence the need for the salad’s warning. I should have sent it back, but I am a shy and retiring person, and I didn’t. Next, we had Miso Glazed Short Ribs. Taking a novel approach to short ribs, it was prepared, somehow, to be tough to chew. I can’t imagine how to prepare tough short ribs. The accompanying creamy potatoes were tasty but, once again, the dish was only slightly warm. I mentioned the temperature of the previous two dishes to one of the many servers who took turns coming to our seats. This resulted in a very nice person coming over who expressed concern and offered to comp one of our meals. I almost said that it wasn’t necessary, but accepted the offer. After a longish wait, the final dish, Seth’s Fancy Fish Camp, arrived, except not really. Someone from the kitchen—perhaps Seth himself?—brought it out for our inspection prior to boning, and assured us that he, and the fish, would return and be hot. The fish would be hot, not Seth. I appreciated the thought, but it struck me that it might have been better to just bone and serve the thing, to keep it hot in the first place. But it was a nice gesture. The fish was sole, and it was covered in a bread crumb and spices concoction that would have been too much if it had been on top of catfish that had something to hide. Was Seth mad at the fish when he created the dish? To finish we had Baklava Sundae, described as everything that you like about baklava in sundae form. A nice idea, mixing ice cream, pistachios, and baklava, completely ruined by adding rosewater and thyme. We abandoned it, using the excuse that we were full to allay the concerns of the server. The atmosphere of the place was perfect if you enjoy TGIFs on a busy Saturday night. Very loud background music, which alternated between bass- and percussion-heavy, blared out of a legion of loudspeakers. We were seated at a small bar, so we enjoyed the company of a hard-working guy continuously shaking cocktails about three feet away from us. Drinks were picked up just to our left, next to the cash register, so a steady flow of staff dropped by. One of the staff repeatedly touched her face and hair whenever she was picking up a drink or running a check, adding to the ambience. Since one of the two meals was comped, we left a 40% tip on the reduced bill. It wasn’t the fault of the staff.

Sankofa Video Books & Café

Washington
10/05/2023: This is DC. Very cool little spot to enjoy a live podcast or browse for books on a variety of black focused topics. I haven't tried much of the food, but what I had was decent. Great coffee.
07/05/2023: Rare find! Sankofa is a must-visit for the best in the latest books, nicely curated talks, impressive rare books, and friendly customers. The cafe offers smoothies, lattes, vegan options, breakfast, bakery items, and Wi-Fi. The book collection includes one of the largest selections of children's books, rare books, film, art, sci-fi, health, spirituality, biographies, history, music, and more from across the African diaspora. It is one of the few long-standing black-owned businesses that remain on Georgia Ave. The front patio is a nice place to spend a warm day with a book or a friend.
