I loved this place. The food was excellent as was the service. There are many vegetarian options and the injera is great. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to family and friends.

I order the combination plate for 1 once a week, I pay $28 for this meal. My yellow lentils were not done yesterday!! Just give two red portions if the others aren’t yet done cooking.

Fantastic food! Highly recommend you give it a try! Bf is vegetarian so I was trying to find somewhere we could dine and I’ve had Ethiopian once in Cleveland and it was good but it’s been a while. We got the vegetarian vegan platter which is a sampling of nearly all the vegetarian dishes they have. It was so good!! Just a great mix of flavors and I love being able to eat a different flavor with each bite. We also got a pot of the Ethiopian tea, some sort of blend similar to chai tea, very good!

We visited for lunch with a party of 6. We got the TA2 combination dish, the Vegetarian plate, the goat plate and Ethiopian coffee. Service was terrific and the young lady was extremely friendly and helpful. All of the food was excellent, coffee presentation was fun and coffee terrific. Strongly recommend visiting.

3/23/24 - I have to update because I cannot leave another review… they never disappoint!! Once again another wonderful dinner here. The spices and herbs were perfect, the Injera was soft and fresh. If you haven’t been, GO!! I recommend the Taste of Abyssinia platter to try several dishes 1 is not spicy, 2 is spicy, but only one dish and not too hot. I could eat here every day. The most flavorful, filling and unique food! Every time we go they greet us and give great service. We always get the sharing platter and the combinations of spices they use makes my mouth water just thinking about. The sharing platter has lamb, chicken, beef, lentils and spinach. I could fill up on just the spinach! Step out of your comfort zone and try something new, you won’t be disappointed. Some of the food is spicy so if that isn’t your thing, let them know.

If you are a lamb lover this is your place. I had Awaze tibs cooked to perfection, aromatic, jucy, rich dish served with equally delicious injera. Nice, quiet, friendly place. I'll be back.

Usually go to Major as it's more convenient when I come down from Lafayette. Tried Abyssinia a few months back when Major wasn't open, Both are very good!! Great food, service, atmosphere at a reasonable cost. Will definitely be going back to both.

The wife and I have visited several times. We made our first visit one night looking for something we never had before, and found it. The quality of the cuisine is always good. The consistency in the flavor of the dishes from one visit, to the next, is always spot on. The staff has always been very personable, and provide good hospitality. If you like good, strong coffee. You'll find it hard to not enjoy a cup with dinner. They food here is great. Give it a try

Absolutely LOVE this restaurant!

Craveable Lamb soup. Delicious 2 person platter, suitable for both veg and meat eaters. When we moved out of state, we tried to find another Ethiopian place that could satisfy our cravings, but so far no one has come close. We made sure we fit this place into our itinerary when we came back to visit family.

Delicious food. Especially awesome for vegetarians. The flavors and spices were a welcomed change to American food.

Abyssinia is a wonderful place with caring employees who put their upmost effort into providing you a genuine dining experience. They carefully make their food and attend to you to make sure you have a great experience. I would love to come here again.

We love this place. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. My daughter refuses to eat in anywhere since covid, so we always get take out. That makes me sad but I still enjoy the food, even if I'm missing out on the whole experience. Turkish coffee after ethiopian food is one of my favorites ever.

Authentic, delicious and impressive décor

Abyssinia is one of the small handful of restaurants we find worth driving an hour up to Indy for. The food is always delicious and the portions are generous. Our go-to is the spicy combo for two (with meat). The injera is superb and we love the variety of vegetable, meat, and lentil dishes. The ambience is also very pleasant. Bottom line: Abyssinia is our favorite Ethiopian restaurant in Indianapolis (and one of our favorite restaurants in Indy overall) — you will not regret coming here!

I walked into Abyssinia never having eaten Ethiopian food or even knowing what Ethiopian food was like. I was greeted with a very friendly waiter, who I told of my new experience, and he was super excited to have me in the restaurant. He explained some dishes and I asked him for a recommendation. He recommended number 19 from the menu and it did not disappoint. The chef even came out to see how I liked my new experience. Update: I returned to this restaurant after three years and this time I ordered the veggie platter to-go. At the time of this review, Indy had 4 Ethiopian restaurants and this is by far my favorite. I've been here several times and the food is great. More importantly, the food is consistent in taste! The staff is nice and courteous as well. Ethiopian food in general is a great option for vegans and the veggie platter is phenomenal. While everything in the veggie platter is great my wife and my favorite is the misir wat, gommen and the quosta. Try it you will not regret it! Teff flour is similar to quinoa flour - made of seeds. It is extremely healthy and filling with just 1 crepe. The Yemisir Sambusa (deep fried conical pastry with lentils) was just the right spice and warmth to get us going. The abyssinia veg combo comes with 7 veg sides of curry on top. The fun part is sharing the meal with family and friends from the same plate. The sharing talks about understanding and signifies cultural anthropology in different regions. I love Ethiopian food! The first time I ever had it was in Minnesota in the seventies. It’s rare to find an Ethiopian restaurant. Which makes the Abyssinian restaurant that much of a treasure. My family went on a Sunday afternoon. The place had some people but not many. We had five in our party so we ordered two each of the assortment platter plus one other platter. It was soooooo good! The yellow beans were sublime, the goat delicious, the greens were fabulous. The big pancake all was served upon was very tasty even by itself.
