Food was delicious and outstanding customer service!

The best rice and meat dish I ever had. I really recommend everyone to try this gem in heart of Memphis. The owner has the best smile and warm welcome you could ever have.

Loved this place! It was my first time eating Ethiopian & I had read up a little on what to expect. I love bread of any kind but I was NOT expecting to love injera SO VERY MUCH. It's soft and spongy and tender. I got the vegetarian combo & my husband got the meal with both chicken & beef stew, and they put it all together on a platter for us. It was a lot of fun for me in particular to just forgo the utensils and eat the food with the injera! My favorite thing on this 100% wonderful plate was the red lentils, but there was literally nothing here I didn't like. It was all so savory and rich. Next time we go back I'm determined to try the coffee!

This laid back, simple restaurant is consistent in its always delicious dishes.

This restaurant is difficult to locate from the street unless you know what to look for, but it’s well worth tracking down! I ordered the yetsom beyaynetu (combo platter) with doro wot, lamb tibs, red lentils, and collard greens, and everything was delicious and only mildly spicy. The portion sizes were very hearty, and more than enough injera was given. Also be sure to get the Ethiopian spiced tea. I look forward to returning to try the kitfo next time I’m in Memphis.

Absolutely WONDERFUL customer service and even better food. Every time I’m in Memphis I make it appoint to not leave without going to Abyssinia. The lamb tibs are one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. The owner/cook is always so polite and hard working every time without fail. This restaurant deserves all the success in the world.

We had the Yetsome Beyaynetu and the Salmon Gulash and loved both! There wasn't much spice in the dishes themselves but the food was great and we loved the atmosphere. The spiced tea was amazing. It was very gingery and super tasty. The serving sizes were huge; we had plenty to take home.

Wow!! I have always loved Ethiopian food, and each Ethiopian restaurant I've been to is different but in a good way! I had the vegetarian dish, and oh my gosh. It's impossible to decide which is your favorite because they are all soooo good! The potato salad, beet salad, red lentils, and yellow split peas were probably my favorites. And of course, the injera was to die for!

I have been coming here for years and LOVE this restaurant. Authentic food and the family here is so sweet. Definitely a hidden jewel here in Memphis. I always come eat here when I come to town!

This has always been my favorite Ethiopian restaurant. The vegetarian combo is amazing, so flavorful. I have enjoyed every meat dish I've had there as well but I love all the veggies so much I usually get the vegetarian combo. The spaghetti dish is easily another favorite. The staff is so friendly and helpful.

If you have been to ethiopia, you know that this food is not exactly ethiopian. Customer service is lacking. Judging from what's on this menu and what we got and our interaction with the owner, I believe it is not run by Ethiopians. Or at least someone who is knowledgeable enough to cook real ethiopian food.

This is Memphis' best kept secret. Ethiopian cuisine is DELICIOUS, and Abyssinia does an excellent job of representing their country's rich culinary culture. I have never been disappointed by a meal at Abyssinia, and this restaurant is on my itinerary every time I come back to Memphis. I tell my friends not to die without experiencing Ethiopian cuisine. These flavors have added joy to my life.

I hadn't had Ethiopian food since 1999. I was convinced I wouldn't find a restaurant better than House of Tadu in San Francisco. I was mistaken. I had missed the taste of Tibs so I searched here in Memphis. I hit GOLD! I visited this restaurant 2 weeks ago for the first time and have been back 4 TIMES! I'm hooked. Everything is absolutely delicious. I had the beef Tibs (cooked) w/collard greens and cabbage. I will back on Saturday for the veggie plate, and again for the goat! The owners are very nice, pleasant and amiable people. My heart melts when I walk in and she says "Hello Sister!" The spices smell awesome when you enter...you just know the food it better than good! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. The food portions are bountiful, and enough injera to cover every morsel! Needless to say... this is my spot!!

Absolutely, by far, THE BEST ETHIOPIAN FOOD I have ever eaten. I have eaten at Ethiopian Restaurants throughout the USA, but this was truly the best. We were graciously welcomed by the proprietor. We sat down for Ethiopian jebena coffee and spiced tea while out take out order was prepared. Both were awesome in flavor. The vegetarian combination with injera was extremely flavorful, colorful, and filling. The beef tibs perfectly spiced...especially liked the rosemary flavors. Fantastic! Wish we lived closer! We would be here as regular customers!

Very good food and service. The restaurant is cozy and nice, but I normally order takeaway. It's a bit easier to order in person and wait than by the phone. You can also order online. The vegetarian platter is excellent as are the chicken and beef dishes.

Amazing Ethiopian restaurant situated on Poplar Avenue near midtown Memphis! Fantastic food, large portion sizes, and a basket of injera bread is served complimentary with every entree. Aside from the great platters, the service made us feel extremely welcome, and added to the very positive experience. Will definitely be returning here often!

We just went to Abyssinia for the first time yesterday, and had a great experience! The food is amazing, the portion sizes are generous, and the pricing is reasonable. The server was really nice, and we didn't have to wait a long time to be seated or served. Would recommend!

Food-Gasm......This is my title for restaurants that should be given a 6 star review, instead of a 5.......we're talking one of the best restaurants one has ever eaten at...a restaurant's food that is so delicious, that entree will live on forever in your mind. ok, now onto the review.....For the record, this is the first time that ANY of us has ever had Ethiopian Food(!), and I am here to tell you, it wont be the last!!! This stuff is AMAZING!!! I had the Gored Gored (Cubed cut beef), with collard greens and rice, and let me tell you that first off...this was by FAR the BEST collard greens I have ever eaten in my life!!! I'm not sure what all they do to spice them up, or what they cook in them, but WOW did it have flavor!!!! The rice was really good too, and the Gored Gored was beyond excellent!!! My daughter had the Yesbeg Tibes (Stir fried lamb) with rice and the green bean/carrot mixture...it was so much food, she couldn't eat it all, but she loved every bite!!! We got to take the leftovers home with us, and I ate them the next day, and I'm here to say that her food was almost as good as mine!!!! My daughters boyfriend had something that was made of chicken, not sure what it was, but he liked his food, and even said that he was going to drag some of his friends down from Jonesboro to try this stuff (lol)!!! The service was excellent, I believe our server WAS the owners wife(?), she was very friendly. During our stay (it was a Monday evening), we seen a LOT of carry out orders being picked up, so I guess they do pretty well in sales. Overall, an excellent experience, and we are looking forward to our return!!!!

This place is exceptional. The bozena shiro is simply one of the best things I have ever eaten, period. Great prices, and the chefs/owners are friendly and funny. Among the best Ethiopian restaurants in the country.

My family and myself have been coming here for years: birthdays, graduations, etc. Order a sharing platter of Salmon Gulash, Beef Tibs, all of the sides and have yourself a great and lovely time.

I have been to Ethiopia and to DC area and ate Ethiopan in both. In saying that I call tell you this place is amazing.

The food here is halal. Food was really delicious and the service was very good. I loved the way the flavours of lamb Fitfit blended with mild sourness of injeera. Loved the combination a lot ! The tea tasted good with a tinge of cinnamon! Nice and cozy ambience.

This food fills your stomach and the aroma pleases the heart! Anything here is worth your money. Abyssinia was a surprise brought to me by a coworker who buying lunch that day. WOW!! We had the Gored Gored, and I've been hooked ever since. Delicious meats and perfectly seasoned everything. Deep shades of red and yellow are sure to be a part of your meal. I rave to everyone about this place not just for the food but the customer service. First time my friend and I went inside to dine, the (what I assume was the owner) Mohammad gave us complimentary tea on a very cold dreary day. So sweet! Another time I came to Abyssinia, I was very sick and was desperate for some hot, hearty food, and they delivered! Unfortunately, I was in such a sick daze that I forgot my purse, but they kept it safe. I didn't realize it was missing until a day later. It only dawned on me it was missing because by the grace of God ANOTHER coworker of mine recognize the purse and called me up to return it! They made sure to confirm she was actually my friend and knew the only by having them talk with me on the phone. 10/10 GO HERE!!

Visited this place on Saturday, Jan. 7th to celebrate my best friend recent job promotion. Ordered the Abyssinian spaghetti w/ Lamb and oh my! It was delicious! The service was excellent and had a very nice and cozy atmosphere. I also order a cup of spiced tea and yes, it was just what I needed. Will definitely recommend this place for those who never tried this type of food but want to try something new. You will not be disappointed.

The nicest people. Stopped in for the first time not knowing it was closing time. Graciously offered us food to go even though it was obvious the kitchen was closing. Perfectly prepared and generously portioned veggies and bread. Gained a repeat customer—we will return to dine in!

I’ve been eating food pretty regularly for 22 years now, and the vegan platter (#14) was the best meal I’ve had, period. Working my way around the plate, I noticed that while each dish tasted unique, each had flavors that complemented the dishes next to it. There was a perfect balance of sweet, savory, tangy, and spicy, and my tastebuds never grew bored. The bread was like an ultra thin, chewy, pancake, and it tasted reminiscent of sour dough bread (in the best way possible). I only used a fork to scrape leftovers into the box, using the bread as my primary utensil. For $14, I got enough food to stuff myself, and had the same amount to take home for lunch the next day. However, the food was so good, I opted to have it for breakfast instead. The server was as kind as any I’ve had, and the tea spiced tea was the cherry on top of the experience.

I love the vegetable plate! The spicey red lentils are my favorite. I would highly recommend this restaurant; especially to new plant based eaters.

We've been going to Abyssinia for more than a decade! Maybe closer to two. Things change but it's mostly the same excellent injera and amazing lentils and veggies. The spiced tea is wonderful. It was too late in the day for coffee but I would expect it to be excellent.

First time going to this location as well as eating Ethiopian food. It was absolutely delicious. I do not know what I got however I told the lady serving us to simply bring us something she would suggest for first timers. I know it was lamb rice and red lintels he had chicken rice and red lintels both were amazing. They gave us a cup of spice tea on the house to try. Definitely will be coming back!!

I like to go to a restaurant at least three times before giving a review, and today was my third visit to Abyssinia Restaurant. First I’d like to say, the customer service is absolutely wonderful and the tea extremely aromatic and delicious. I’d go just for tea however I was interested in trying Doro Wat. The first time I ordered it, Thursday November 17th, it was the tastiest dish I’d ever had and wanted more so I decided I’d go the next day. Friday November 18th I once again ordered Doro Wat through Door Dash and picked it up. Once I got home and dug into it I realized it didn’t taste the same but it was still good. Today, November 21st, I order it again hoping it would taste like the first time but the chicken was tough, the cabbages were tough and the spicy lentils were a bit crunchy. I’m still giving them 5 stars because of my first visit, the awesome customer service and the most delicious tea I’ve ever had. I hope the next time I am able to go, my Doro Wat experience will be comparable to my first one. I still would recommend.

What a gem of a restaurant! Hands down, one of the best places I've eaten at in Memphis. We ordered Chicken stew, Chicken Tibes and Lamb Tibes which were served family style. Each and every dish including the veggie side dishes was lip-smackingly delicious! They all paired really well with the soft injera and rice. Special mention of their green beans and carrots dish which is ridiculously tasty. The highlight for me, though, was their hospitality. The owner and the nice lady serving us were kind and friendly. We unknowingly stayed there for hours after dinner talking and didn't realize we had been there past their closing time until much later but were not at all rushed. Overall, excellent food, fantastic service and a very cosy and homely ambience sums up this amazing restaurant. A must try!
