There's a problem that the restaurant don't understand the principle of just in time management. I ordered the breakfast special. I received the order and it was not prepared as I requested and there was no potatoes with the food. I was told by another waitress that it will be coming... after 5 minutes, it finally came. I wanted the food to be prepared and served altogether. Meanwhile the food is getting cold. So I leave to told (in their effort to be funny, I guess) now you can pay for the food and go and buy some groceries. I will make an effort to let people know not to patronize the restaurant.

We went to Alexander’s for breakfast on my brother’s birthday. The staff was exceedingly nice and sang happy birthday to him. On that day, there was something wrong with the waffle maker so they told us it would be a 30 minute wait. We ended up waiting over an hour for our food. The staff were very apologetic and comped our food. Very impressive service! The food was delicious and we will definitely be coming back for breakfast another time.

Just moved to the neighborhood and I’ve already become a regular… It’s hard to want to go anywhere else when the food is great, the service is always on point, and the staff is top notch! The croissant sandwich is my go-to and the side of crispy hash browns is perfection!

I just wanted to share with you about our recent visit to Alexander's restaurant for breakfast. The staff there were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The service was prompt, with our drinks and food served quickly. The portions were generous - our plates were so full that we couldn't finish everything! We also noticed that if you order coffee, the staff are happy to keep refilling your cup. The bill was quite reasonable, and overall we had a great experience. I would definitely recommend this place to others.

Old fashioned diner. Not a lot of circus, the food is as good as homemade (or better). Edit: The original review was from 2 years ago. The review stands - great place to enjoy a well-done breakfast. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. The only thing that I don't like is from a business standpoint - they make paying incredibly easy with a digital QR code. Though this is convenient as all heck, it removes a final opportunity for the staff to interact with the customer and thank them for their patronage. It does create more time for the staff to be of service to other patrons. You don't have to use this option. You can pay the server or at the register. It's just that as a business owner, I would like the patrons to see the staff's smile and hear that "Thank you, hope to see you back again soon." Keep things personal, high tech is ruining us!

Absolutely wonderful local spot for comfort food. Excellent, hyperefficient service - we were a party of ten on a busy afternoon, and we got seated in less than ten minutes and served shortly after! Wide variety of delicious food, from chilaquiles to potato pancakes to burgers. Also, breakfast all day! And try the skillets, they're great!

We recently tried Alexander’s, after hearing great reviews from people in the Edgewater neighborhood. We were blown away by the quality of the food, and the kindness of the waitstaff! We had a late brunch, and had the 3 egg & bacon special, and the Veggie Skillet. Food was fresh, came out fast, and had so much flavor! This was such a great deal for how much food we got! Can’t wait to come back, and make this one of our go to places! Thanks to the staff at Alexander’s for a lovely visit!

What a great diner! Exploring the neighborhood and I read good things about this place so I had to check it out. So good!! Busy but not crazy busy, sat at the counter, which is always fun. The food was delicious and did not take long to get. The ladies behind the counter are very friendly! Definitely going to be my go to breakfast place from now on!!

This spot is a sleeper... Kind of like how sleepy I feel after having breakfast there! Waitress couldn't be sweeter . Food seriously is simple fare with each component better than I've had in years!! Had the 3 egg special that comes with really fresh , not greasy hash browns, delicious breakfast sausage cooked perfectly,... Also not greasy.. and pancakes that are fantastic, from scratch, touch of vanilla pillows!! Very reasonable price for that delish food .. did I mention they include orange juice with that special? I know people say this but I lived it .. it was a happy trip back to the 50's.

My first at Alexander's. I ordered the Denver omelet. It was delicious and the portion was big. The server was also very friendly and attentive.

Alexander's is a smaller, cozy home-like diner with good food and great value. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Saturday around 3:30pm craving a much-needed breakfast / brunch style meal (thank goodness they are open until 4:00pm!) Even half an hour before closing there was a pretty solid amount of customers - Seems like it might be a regular haunt of the neighborhood. California and Mexican Skillets were wonderful - the only issue being the salsa and tortillas that were listed were not included with the latter - but after asking our waitress she fixed the issue and gave us them extra in addition to a side of pancakes. Very solid place with a relaxing diner vibe (sitting near the kitchen and hearing sizzling and cooking pans while sipping coffee was such a morning ASMR feeling). The restaurant also has a (very) small parking lot in the back with free parking for customers - and street parking is available otherwise. Overall good place for breakfast and lunch dishes.

I had ordered a BLT sandwich and fries for take-out and when I arrived back at home the sandwich had burnt bacon, tomatoes were on the old side, and the fries were undercooked.

One man show! Ordered only two biscuits and got charged for four; yet they didn't offer the extra gravy. Scrambled eggs were a small portion. Overall okay! Coffee sugar Shaker is a plus! Bacon was perfect!

Solid diner with American food, slight Greek influence

Crowded but comfortable. Food cooked to perfection. It's not hard to figure it this place has goods eats if it's that crowded. They had a line for Uber eats delivery people.

Great comfort food, wide selection so there is something that will satisfy you, and the staff is very friendly and takes care of their guests like we're friends stopping by.

Food is expensive but good, as long as you're order is correct. Wait times are really long though and our order has been forgotten before.

Amazing quality of food and amazing experience

Stopped in for Saturday morning breakfast on way to an appointment. Was immediately greeted and seated in spacious booth with nice view of Clark Street. Ordered the Greek scrambled eggs with hash browns and wheat toast. Delicious!

I ordered Mexican skillet. What I got was plate full of tortilla chips, an scrambled egg and some pieces of meat. No salsa, no green peppers, no tomatoes. The menu says it comes with a choice of toast or pancake, I was offered neither. That was my first and last time there.

This restaurant has been around for years but I just decided to stop in and check them out and suddenly feel like I waisted time going to other places. The food here was excellent. I highly recommend the lentil soup. It was delicious. I also had a New York strip steak and French toast not pictured here because I ate it too fast 😂 but that was delicious too. I highly recommend this place.

This is the kind of place that under-promises and over-delivers. I've never been inside but order often on UberEats. The portions are always more than generous and many of the items come with soup or toast on the side. The quality is always exceptional. My only critique would be the drink selection on UberEats, would be nice to have options like water, Coke, etc. and the coffee is a little pricey, but that aside this of one of my favorite places to order from.

My food was good until they bought my son food and his chicken tenders was raw and pink on inside my son didn't eat it.

I ordered a gypsy skillet and the food was seasoned perfectly! Delicious! The only thing I wish was that Alexander's had a senior citizens special for around $10. That way, I'd be there more often.

Friendly neighborhood old school diner

I love breakfast. Theirs is the best in the neighborhood. Open early and a few parking spots in the back. Order one of their skillets and enjoy!

Been coming here for years, always friendly and cheerful. Food is you basic breakfast, lunch & dinner. Only think is, the staff starts cleaning up while folks are still eating...taking salt shakers, mopping floor, filling jams & jellies...kinda disturbing.

Love love love this neighborhood diner. They do everything right, starting with some good old school hospitality. As cozy and presentable as it gets, and incredibly tasty skillets! Very reasonably priced as well. I pass by every morning at 5:30 AM on my way to work and there they are prepping everything. When I'm back at 5 PM they're closing up, cleaning and counting the drawer and it's almost as if nothing happened but I know some amazing skillets were served that day. I want to go every weekend!!

I ate breakfast here a few times while staying in the area. It’s a tightly run joint, and although the boss lady doesn’t look the most friendliest of people at a distance, she’s actually a great friendly host. I had the vegetarian skillet twice which was delicious, and the Mediterranean scrambled eggs another time. They also do freshly squeezed orange juice. This is a place that I’m unlikely to ever eat at again, not because I wouldn’t want to, but because I live on the other side of the world. Yet, in my travels, I can always tell the places that have been around for a long time have so because they’re just genuinely good. I wish the best for Alexander’s. May all your staff live a prosperous and fulfilling life. Thanks for the food!

Visited here with an American friend, it is fantastic. I had the burger and it was beautifully cooked and very tasty along with crinkle cut chips. One of our party had the short stack of pancakes which was 2, more than enough along with a pot of maple syrup and fruit. Would definitely visit again. Best burger ever.

Really glad I stopped here. The staff was very polite and the ambiance was very peaceful first thing in the morning. The food was well prepared and not greasy at all. I would definitely visit again.

Delicious diner with retro vibes, great food, and friendly service. The milkshakes are thick and the corned beef omelette was huge and so tasty. Fluffiest pancakes ever. Good coffee. They make homemade soups that are served with some meals making for a very hearty dining experience. We sat in a booth with a window view, got the shakes to go, and then walked a few blocks to Andersonville. It all made for a perfect day. Will definitely come back!

Regular diner, coffee tasted burnt, service was prompt, pancakes were good but little underdone and tasted a bit of other things made on the flat grill. Hash browns were done well but totally tasteless, not seasoned at all. Adding seasoning is not quite the same, avg place

This place is a landmark i came into visit my family from Ohio and the 5 of us plus a toddler was easily sat next to each other in a booth,alot of places nowadays make us feel not very kid friendly so.that was a plus!We all enjoyed our food and my Monte Cristo sandwich was huge and came w soup ,ff,coleslaw, all.the trimmings!!!Our server gave us excellent service and i will be returning every time i come.home to visit my family 👪

Always the best and I love the hash brown potatoes with Cholula hot sauce. I recommend it. If you want a semi healthy option then try the Alexander wrap. Spinach feta and grilled chicken with grilled onions. Amazing!!

A 60-yr-old institution in Edgewater, a classic diner with comfy booths and counter seating. I had the corned beef on rye with fries and a salad. The sandwich was rather dry but perked up with some thousand dressing. Fries were crunchy and tasty and salad with Italian dressing was very generous. My companion tried out the chicken Philly sandwich mashed potatoes with gravy and the lentil soup. He gave everything a thumbs up. I sampled his lentil soup and I thought it was a bit too tomatoey and thick for my taste. I might have given this restaurant only three stars for this particular visit but the service earned it a fourth Star as the staff is very attentive to your needs. I'll be back.

EDIT: George & Bertha and their son Louie were the owners( circa 1977-1984) Clark st and granville ave. I went there hoping to enjoy great food from my childhood. I knew George & Bertha & Louis their son. This is not the Alexander I grew up with. Not in taste or quality. Most of their signature dishes are gone. Goulash, rosa marina soup, greek fish, beef stew etc Now this place reminds me of numerous cookie cutter establishments with watered down quality food and trying for hip casual atmosphere & over priced. But if that's your thing, enjoy. Addendum. I have the right one.Rosie was the lunch & evening waitress, plus my mom worked there part time. Very sad to see the only kept was the name of restuarant and very few of the dishes.

The Pepper shaker was one of the best I have experienced in a long time. It is the little things. Skillet was good, good seasoning, a healthy amount of potatoes. And pancakes where better. Kind staff, fast service. Will come back.

The food is excellent, always have and hopefully always will be. It’s a nostalgic joint on the north side of Chicago surrounded by busy commuters and businesses of the like. Customer service is super friendly and the once again the food is wonderful. By the way they have grits upon request. 😊
