Always, always, great food and service!! Best place to eat in Southern Colorado!!!

A local favorite. With the uniqueness of converting a residence into a well designed dining venue, this is a great choice for a dining experience. A large selection of wines, choice of indoor or very nice, outdoor seating. You'll be greeted by the owner, who is very well versed in helping you make a wine selection, the wait staff is very knowledgeable about the menu, friendly, and attentive. We found a good choice of entrees, the food was well prepared, service was good, prices were reasonable. Leave room for dessert! I chose a seared rare tuna steak (my opinion on cooking temperature) which was delicious. The ribs, mashed potatoes, and creme brulee were very delicious choices as well. Reservations are required ✓

Best food I’ve ever had…and I’ve had lots!

This place is awesome! I am 81. Took my wife here for her birthday It was the best dinning experience we ever have had. Everything was cooked to perfection, many choices, lots of high quality wines,just can't put all into words We will be going back as soon as we can. The best !!!!

Fine dining in a warm, bright space that reflects the uniqueness of Alys, who still does all the baking and preps things like the delicious salad dressing. Her wine collection is varied and well priced. We savored a 2018 Ramey Pinot Noir - worried it was too old but she promised she'd drink it if we did not like it. (She did not get a drop.) The wine list is laminated but the nightly menu is all verbal so listen carefully. We had rack of lamb and salmon, both delish. Save room for dessert!

Two for Service and four for food. I am a semi-regular customer eating at Alys' several times per year. The food is up-scale with menu items that you will not find in chain restaurants. Aly is very creative with the menu. The last few times I dined there my experience was less than satisfactory. The meat was a little tough, but the glazing was amazing. The food overall including the sides and desert was good but the service was unsatisfactory. We had reservations and requested a certain dish in advance but when we arrived we were told the dish was not available. We were asked to choose a different item. It was extremely hot in the restaurant. We were given water when we arrived and asked for more throughout the meal, but never received the water even after asking several times. Fortunately, we had some water in our car we had after we left. They were busy, but very slow at responding so we ended up spending much more time in the restaurant than we should have - 2 hours. When we asked for the check, the servers checked out other tables that arrived after us. I gave a 15% tip, which is lower than what I usual give because of the service but is still generous considering the service. The servers have a tendency to hover over you while you choose your tip which makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. We had a bill of about $200 because we had a nice bottle of wine, so 15% was still a nice tip. I didn't get a thank you when I paid, which seems a little rude and entitled. I am only writing this review because the past few times I have been in there I've had a similar experience with the service. If you spend $200 plus tip on a meal, I expect better. I'm sure if/when I will go back.

So glad I trusted my instincts and tried Aly's last weekend. It did not feel like having a great meal at a restaurant, it felt like I was invited to Aly's home for a wonderful dinner and dining experience. We delighted in striking a great conversation with her while we enjoyed her sublime cuisine (the ribs and the Thai snapper entrees) and a fantastic bottle of Darioush wine from Napa. We are already making plans to return to dine again soon. If you're looking for a culinary gem within a stone's throw of the beautiful Spanish Peaks....then look no further than Aly's.....thank me later!

Excellent food on a rotating menu.

Exceptional in all regards. The White Bean and Ham Soup was delicious with a complex velvety broth that brought tears to my eyes. For the main course, I had the lamb, and my wife had the pork. Both seasoned and cooked to perfection. May I suggest the Ramey Pinot Noir as an excellent pair? Finished it off with carrot cake and the Angel Food. Get a reservation and then get ready to enjoy yourself. We will definitely be back... often.

I’ve been to Alys’s a number of times. Her menu is excellent and the food is white-tablecloth exquisite. Definitely a first-class experience.

Spent 3 days in La Veta and ate dinner here all 3 nights. Had better food here than in many big cities we have visited. A nice selection of entrees with a vegetarian choice. Salads and vegetables tasted freshly picked and the home made desserts were superb. Alys and her staff welcoming and gracious. Would highly recommend.

What a great find! Lovely ambiance with choice of 5 prixe fix dinners, one of them vegetarian with an excellent and incredibly reasonably-priced wine list. My half rack of lamb was delicious and perfectly cooked. And Alys is a down-to-earth and interesting host who knows how to run a great restaurant! 8/12/23 update - We went out of our way to include a stop in La Veta specifically to enjoy Alys - what a delicious and hospitable experience. I’ve eaten in some of the finest restaurants and met some of the greatest chefs; Alys and her lovely abode are absolutely at the top. Our dinner was perfection and Alys was an amazing hostess, all at an excellent price.

Great wine selection, food is cooked to perfection, dessert is delicious! What else can you say… not a chain style restaurant, unique and special. We celebrated our 40th anniversary here and couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

I have been coming here for several years now and we absolutely love Aly’s so so so much. Its always the most amazing environment and Aly is so dedicated to delicious cuisine!!! Occasionally the wait staff is low but there is absolutely no room to complain when everything else is so perfect. I would recommend Aly’s to anyone who loves food and loves having a good time :)))

I dined here a couple months ago on a whim. Had Chicken Cordon Bleu with a salad, potatoes and wine. The meal was delicious. The atmosphere is very homely, which makes sense as it's in the owners home!! Such a cool small time vibe and atmosphere. This is definitely the "fanciest" restaurant in La Veta, but it's far from pretentious. I can't wait to go back when I come back down.Seating is limited and you definitely need to make a reservation ahead of time. Enjoy!

I really can't say enough about Alys' restaurant, it is WAY off of the main routes and totally worth making the trip. The menu changes constantly and nothing is bad, you can't make a bad choice. The chef has an amazing flair for flavor combinations, you must give this place a try, you will be back often. We go as much as possible!

Aly's is always wonderful and a special treat in La Veta.

You won't be disappointed. A surprising gem in such a small community. Alys is a great host and runs a tight ship. We were a party of three. Larger groups might not fit as easily, you should ask when you call. The menu is small but thoughtful and focused. The kitchen cooked and timed things just right. Rack of lamb cooked actually rare -- the meat eaters at our table were delighted. Super rich crab cakes, not doughy, sauteed crispy. Wine list is deep too. Local art on the walls!

A true artisan style eatery. our kind of food. Well prepared with good ingredients. We've been to some top name restaurants and have felt pushed between courses. Not here. Be prepared to enjoy your wine and conversation. Good food preparation can't be rushed.

Amazing food and service, but you will need a reservation for this place, they do up fast

I greatly enjoyed dinner on Saturday night (July 23) with friends, one of whom is a regular at Alys' Restaurant. I can see why! The food is fantastic, the atmosphere is warm and friendly, the wine terrific. We let Alys know I am vegan when we made the reservation; advance notice of dietary restrictions is always a good practice - we can't expect people to be mind readers. Alys prepared a hearty stuffed bell pepper with a savory rice and vegan "meat" filling for me, which was terrific. My friends enjoyed their steak and fish dishes as well. We also loved the olive and pickled tomato tapa already at the table when we were seated. The service was excellent, and Alys herself visited with us. The eco-friendly "Predator" (I know, ironic for a vegan) zinfandel, handpicked by Alys, was incredibly tasty as well. If you are ever in the La Veta/Cuchara area, I'd definitely recommend you eat at Alys' Restaurant.

Great little surprise place. We were staying 10 nights in Cuchara and tried to find a nice little 31st anniversary place to celebrate. Perfect!

Always a pleasure eating at Alys. Her menu changes based on availability. She always has 4 dishes and usually 1 vegetarian option. Make sure to get reservations a week or 2 in advance since she fills up quickly.

My friends treated me for dinner at Alys'. Our meals were delectable, and my dessert was free because it was my birthday. Best birthday celebration eveerrrrr!

This is a wonderful find in little La Veta, CO! It's in a converted house with a patio. The staff were all very friendly and attentive, and Alys herself came around to each table to chat with the patrons. My husband had a half rack of lamb, which he raved about, and I had stroganoff, which came with mashed potatoes rather than noodles--which was just fine! Alys also has an impressive wine list. We can't wait to come back to La Veta to try the other entrees!

Alys’ Restaurant is an oasis in a desert of fine dining. There are other enjoyable places in the area, but nothing approaching this quality. The food is excellent, with a verbal menu of the usual steaks and other grilled meats, but also with interesting items and vegetarian items changing weekly. Whatever they’re serving, you can count on it to be well executed and best quality. The wine list is very nice and the prices are half what you expect in a larger town. You won’t find a quality cocktail like this anywhere at this price. The desserts are mainly house made and the choices are many, so leave some room! The dining room and the patio are comfortable and interesting and all is immaculately clean. You’re going to love this place if you are looking for a relaxing fine dining experience at a very reasonable cost.

I've had two amazing meals here and highly recommend Alys'. The environment is so lovely, the service stellar and the food is to die for. The wine list is very reasonable and what a selection. Don't forget to make reservations in advance. But do not miss out on this dinning experience!! Even the bathroom is adorable! What a gem.

Small restaurant but big on service and food. The menu changes each night, and my husband has the skirt steak cooked.exactly as he wanted it, while I had the moussaka. Absolutely delicious. There is a large wine list as well. The service was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend.

I was expecting a good experience from my friends recommendation. However, I was surprised to find the dining experience to be simply outstanding. The wine and food are just amazing. The dining experience is intimate and comforting such that the staff simply do not take your order, it is more like being served by a friend.

It's pronounced Alice's. This is a charming, small, family operated restaurant has a huge selection of wines and an even larger opportunity for an outstanding dining experience. Alys personally greets each diner to ensure that their experience is everything that they hoped for. Their selections of food coupled with a subtle use of herbs and spices results in a gastronomical delight sure to please the most discriminating palate. Recommend making reservations a day or two in advance.

The food and the time spent was fantastic

Nice ambiance. It's a home with a large living room that has dining tables. The food was excellent. The menu changes daily so when you view the menu on the net your selections will come from those items. Not all of the items are offered. Helpful pleasant wait staff. A high point of my trip. BTW, don't get that really cheap economy ticket without paying extra to book your seat in advance as I did because you'll be the first to be bumped as I was. 24 hours to get back to NJ. But I did get a hefty airline voucher for my trouble, and was put up in a hotel. All's well that.......

We had Thanksgiving Dinner here and enjoyed it so much, we made reservations for the next day again while we were visiting in town. Small place, almost feels like your in Alys' house. Food is all fresh and wonderfully made. What I like is they don't serve the same things on a standard menu. They create tasty dishes. We'll go back when we are in La Veta again.

The food is incredible the atmosphere could not be better, fantastic wine list. But the best was the warmth and wonderful feeling of being that Aly gives to every table.

Alys is delightful and talented. Makes excellent food. Only got to have her catering rather than off the menu - but it was great! Accommodated food restrictions and was vigilant about it. The space was an art gallery prior to becoming a restaurant and has a ton of pieces throughout.
