Fancy place, not for picky, eaters, bread made a daily

After the first two dirty bread plates, I should have caught on and left before ordering, but nevertheless received a 3rd dirty plate. Fried calamari was so extremely salty and seemingly doused in paprika- but only some pieces. The lobster ravioli was inedible. The grouper was inedible. The bolognese was inedible. The service was nonexistent. An all around terrible meal.

We went here last year and it was great! Delicious food, generous portions and great service. However - It seems to have gone down in quality unfortunately - maybe they were just having a really busy night but my husband and I were celebrating my birthday (our last one as a family of 2) and it was a lukewarm experience..the portions were smaller than we remembered. The chicken Marsala was much oiler as well instead of that sweet/savory taste you would expect. Also the waiter didn’t really pay attention to us. I felt bad for him because he seemed so stressed - at the end of the meal he immediately offered the check instead of the desert menu. Even on our way out he just sped past us without even an acknowledgement - hopefully Amelia’s is doing a good job taking care of their service staff because that’s not really an experience you would anticipate from a nice restaurant..

This is the fourth time we’ve eaten here and the second time we’ve been disappointed. Not sure if it has to do with being seated outside but we felt ignored, had to ask for bread (not given any oil like other tables) waited over an hour for our entree after ordering - while watching other table outside finish their meal and have it cleared. Not sure what was happening but unfortunately it was similar to the last time we visited and now I’m not sure we’ll return. Just so disappointed as the food is excellent and our first two visits last year were wonderful!

This was the worst Valentine's Day dinner I have ever experienced. They limited the table to 45 minute dinner and the waiter was very rushed taking our order and coming to our table. It was made very clear that we were limited on time. They had a limited dinner menu and did not allow any substitutions or changes to the meal, even for someone with allergies. I could not eat a meal as they refused even to take off ingredients. All the tables were crammed together like they booked as many dinner reservations as they possibly could. This experience took away the happiness of the holiday. I do NOT recommend this restaurant.

Bread was cold, could taste the Clorox in my water bad and my eggplant was burnt. Server was polite and attentive though

Service was great - salad and bread good - entree which was linguini with clams and lasagna not good at all. Sauce on both was not good - won’t probably eat there again but service was great.

I liked the chicken piccata, which was fine but too smothered in sauce. My wife’s grouper was rubbery and drowning in tomato sauce. The atmosphere is nice, like an established mom-and-pop place, and the staff are friendly and courteous.

Chicken Inverno was rubber. Soft and wet and awful. Not even hot like it was sitting out before put on our table. Was my all time favorite place in town but has gone down considerably over the last few years. Such a disappointment yesterday.

Place was empty literally only 4 tables with people. We only ordered dinner with a party of 3 and we waited for one hour for the food. Way overrated and overpriced

I am usually not so disrespectful. But I am NEVER going back. Over an hour to get pasta? Food was decent; but I can make better at home and in much less time.

Avoid at all costs! Do not come here for graduation dinner! We had a reservation and we got our food 2 hours later and the order came wrong. The quality of our food was extremely poor. Unfortunate to say but Olive Garden is much better than this….. Do not come here, spend your good earned money somewhere else.

Took 1 1/2 hours to get or meal from when we ordered, and one was wrong, took it back and was still wrong when they brought it back. Place was empty when we got there, so it wasn't for the crowd. Should have gone to Cracker Barrel. Would have enjoyed it better. Will never return.

This restaurant is awesome. Greg our waiter was awesome we didn’t have a reservation and we were still able to be seated. We would highly recommend this restaurant. Patrick and Mary.

The best Italian restaurant in Gainesville hands down. We tried the chicken parmigiana and fettuccine Alfredo the last time we went and had a fantastic time. Everything is made to order so expect to wait a bit for your order. Amelia’s is located in the heart of Downtown Gainesville behind the Hippodrome. You can easily get there by biking, walking, or scootering. Perfect for a birthday, anniversary, or date night out on the town.

Possibly the longest I’ve ever waited for food. Over 90 minutes and that’s only because the server was trying her best to push the kitchen along. Another table near us waited even longer and finally just paid for their drinks and left!!! At 10pm I told her to just box it up when it was ready so we could eat at our hotel. Our server said every table she had that night complained so I have to assume this is standard practice. Food was just ok, the sweet server was lovely and tried her best but this was clearly a chef/kitchen problem. What a mess and very expensive for what ended up being takeout.

Me & my boyfriend have been talking about coming here for motnhs, were both italian food fans & were excited to give a local italian food place a chance. But if im being completely honest, this experience was NOT worth anyone's hard earned money or valuable time. We were sat at 7:35 pm and left at 8:45 with empty stomachs and a terrible experience. The atmosphere and wait staff were all very nice, although there were MULTIPLE bugs crawling and flying around our table right next to the kitchen.... We didnt bring this up to staff at first because I really wanted to have a good experience since we were saving this spot for a special date night occasion. I wanted to give this place the benefit of the doubt. We ordered our entrees and waters right away in a completely empty dining room. We didnt get served our salads until 30 minutes after ordering & STILL hadnt recieved any entree while being sat there for over an hour. The restaraunt was already PAST CLOSING at this point. We brought this up to a manager who didnt even offer us any discount or solution. His offer was essentially to 'Wait 5 minutes for your food or get a check for just the salads.' We were honestly just a bit more upset after this interaction, but the manager then decided not to charge us for the salads to hopefully make up for everything. I want to say I am quite literally the most understanding person possible, I have worked in multiple restaraunts and even fine dining, but to call this restaraunt fine dining while having these issues is just extremely misleading and disapointing. In all honestly I was extremely sad this experience happened and just wanted to share our experience to let others know before being hopeful like us.

Wife and I drove up to Gainesville to see a show at the Hippodrome and decided to get dinner before the show. We called ahead and the man on the phone was very helpful with the parking situation. Perfect dinner before a show! Our waiter David suggested a couple entrees that really hit the spot. Save room because the portions are big! Great night all around, we will be back

Not as good as it used to be. Salad was super small and they no longer put on the pickled carrots that Chef Andy would make. Food was ok. Sauces a little to rich. Salmon sauce was oily and not enough sauce for the surf and turf. Not a bad experience but not as good as it could have been. 17 plus years of the place to dine for me and the wife. Don't think we will return.

We asked for a 6pm reservation, was told they only had 6:30. Arrived to an empty restaurant and they put us next to the door to the kitchen so we had the pleasure of getting passed nonstop. Waited 30min for drinks, no kids cups. 90min in the food came (only 2 of us)... Saltiest boxed pasta with unbreaded, non-tender veal of my life. Server was great... Not his fault.

Food took an hour to come out when we were 1/6 table waiting to be served. Food was good but nothing to comeback for.

We really enjoyed our dining experience here. Melissa was out server and she was phenomenal. All her dish recommendations were spot on. Food was delicious and portions were generous. We'll definitely return!

Wow! A magnificent time at Amelia's! Our server David was very charming and helpful. He recommended an off menu special in the blackened salmon that was very good! The ambiance was very quaint, though the music in the dining room was a bit drab. We will certainly come back the next time we are in town visiting our daughter!

Not upset at all but felt this review could help the owner's. I have been to many Italian restaurants around the country in various major metro areas and I can't say I was impressed with Amelia's evening wait staff. I'm all about supporting small biz. But they seemed pretty judgy especially if your 1 party. After asking for an inside table I was offered to sit outside despite a fairly empty restuarant with many open tables inside. I asked again but was politley told no. I felt discriminated. Athestetics of the restaurant were average. Due to the poor experience I declined to seat as I will not pay an establishment to have me sit outside against my choice. This experience made me lose confidence that the rest of my dinning experience would be good. I was able to find a more established restaurant who seated me without question. I was sure to tip them double price of the meal. Please make efforts to be more inviting to all of your customer base. Thank you.

It’s a classic Italian restaurant with plenty of the standards you want plus some variety of interesting alternatives. Service was attentive, and indoor and outdoor seating are all charming.

I got the fettuccini Alfredo and my boyfriend got the lobster ravioli which we both enjoyed our meals. The lobster ravioli was a small portion size which is why I’m giving 4 stars. The Alfredo was much bigger and it was super creamy. Our waiter was very nice and attentive, and our food came out quickly. The restaurant is very nice inside and decorative, also very clean. It is definitely a nice establishment and I would return but be prepared it is really pricey

Unfortunately, this was one of the worst restaurant experiences. Four of us had a reservation at 7:30pm on a Friday night after V-day. The restaurant was 1/2 or more than 1/2 empty, the menu we were offered was Wednesday night's limited V-day menu (which we didn't know until we arrived). A few of us have dietary restrictions including celiac so not only did it take the server too long to tell us he thinks the kitchen can accommodate but it took close to an hour to get our salads, and over an hour and a half to get the food that not only looked inedible but was not what we ordered or were able to eat. It was our fault for staying so long but we were catching up after years of not seeing each other. When we inquired with our server who wasn't attentive, he mentioned our food was being plated, 30 minutes or so prior to the (wrong) food being delivered to our table. Several tables turned over in the time we were there. Even when we left, starving, the restaurant did not seem overly busy or apologetic. I would never recommend this restaurant unless the management and staff are fully trained on how to provide suitable hospitality and accommodate dietary restrictions that are pervasive nowadays. And if you cannot accommodate, be honest and upfront. The better experience would've been to know once we sat down rather than 1.5 + hrs later!

Came out for a special night. Took 2 hrs to finally eat. Food was not good and was terribly disappointed. This was no way a fine dining experience let alone a good one. They need better management. Will not return.

Was hesitant to dine here with the mixed reviews but so glad we did! Celebrated our 7th anniversary here while in Gainesville. Such a beautiful and charming building and atmosphere. Our waitress was wonderful and attentive. We had the Caprese appetizer, Cesar salad (upgrade to the Cesar!! So good!) pesto linguine & shrimp Florentine. Entrees were generous and we brought a lot home. Our waitress congratulated us on our anniversary and sent us with a complimentary dessert. Other reviews complained about slow service but I saw it as they are not rushing you like most restaurants. It’s a place to go enjoy your time and relax. We walked over from our hotel so no parking issues but there is plenty of 2 hour parking all over the area that we were told is not really enforced. It was too cold to dine outside but I’m recommending it to all my fam in the area because I bet when the weather is nicer that is a great experience. Thanks for a wonderful evening Amelia’s :)

This hidden gem is tucked away off the busy streets behind the Hippodrome. The food was amazing, the Florida grouper and lobster ravioli specials were a wonderful addition to the regular menu. We will definitely be back again soon.

I went to Amelia's for a corporate event. Unfortunately, they only provided 1 server for our group of 15. After waiting two hours for the entree, the steak was cooked nicely but wasn't seasoned at all. For the folks that had grouper, it looked pretty gross. They then ruined dessert by not having enough for everyone. Our server did her best to make our experience great, but they need new management.

The entire dining room was left waiting an hour and a half for our food after ordering. All that for expensive mediocre pasta. Will not be returning.

Had a reservation at 7:30. Took about thirty minutes to have anyone take our drink order. Took about another 30 minutes to get our drinks. At this point we had ordered. By 9:15, after asking multiple times about our meal, we gave up and left. Someone came by maybe twice in the (almost) two hours we were there. Worst service ever. Do not go here if you’re hungry. You will leave disappointed.

First time at Amelia's and will be our last. Service was very very slow, and not what was expected from "fine" dining. Food was average. They did have good customer service when needed. Our reservations wasn't showing up, and they still sat us. Our server was very sweet and was doing her best. Just didn't work for us or meet any expectations.

Sat at our table with a dirty tablecloth not changed, bread brought to table but no bread plates. Laid pieces of our bread on dirty tablecloth to eat them,caesar salad absolutely tasteless, asked for some hot chilies to be sprinkled on veal parmasan well couldn’t eat it. Chef or whoever probably dumped 1/4 cup of chilies on meat. Way to hot not enjoyable to eat. Waitress not paying attention to our needs sat for 20 minutes until another waiter brought us 2nd glass of wine. They didn’t charge us for the veal parmasan and 2nd glass of wine but geez come on pay attention to your tables. Not fine dining at all.

We recently went to Amelia's Italian Restaurant for our wedding anniversary, and everything was amazing! We had the calamari appetizer and two of the specials on the menu. The bread and prosecco were fantastic, and the atmosphere was perfect for our special night. Thanks to all of the servers who worked together to keep everything in order with excellent timing.

Very far from a fine dining experience as they claim. Upon entering, we were not greeted by anyone and with a reservation it still was quite some time to be seated even though the restaurant was about 1/3 full. The waitress did not tell us her name and just asked if we wanted drinks, and then did not bring said drinks until reminded about 20 minutes later. The mozzarella and prosciutto appetizer was tasty, but we had 2 chicken based entrees that were mediocre at best. When we were ready to pay, it took another significant and uncomfortable amount of time until we were attended to. This is understandable in busy times, but there were 3 other tables in use at this point. Amelias used to be my favorite restaurant in Gainesville, but two years later and it is now just an expensive average Italian joint after back to back poor experiences

Take this with a grain, or should I say a pound of salt? The food was terrible. So salty and drowning in sauce. The marinara (on the side pasta) looked liked it came out of a jar/can and the first fish I ordered, I sent back, only to find the second fish dish was just as bad. My son had the alla vodka dish which came with sausage, but the sausage was spicy (not mentioned on the menu) and took away from the sweetness of the alla vodka. As for the service, there was one waitress for the entire restaurant, and no food runner, she did everything and so it was impossible to get drink refills or anything we needed for our dishes. We didn't even have napkins. The atmosphere is fine inside but the outside was lacking in silverware, glassware and looked a bit haphazard. I cannot tell you how disappointed we were considering it was rated so highly for the area.

We waited over 90 min to get our entire meal as the restaurant had a larger group. It looked like our order got misplaced. When food arrived, it wasn’t great. Chicken Marsala tasted like bbq chicken, very sweet. The chicken Parm dish we got had a very fried taste to it, it wasn’t great. We were told the manager was coming to speak with us, it never happened. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

1.5 hour wait for salad. Then boxed entrees to go. When got back to hotel, the order was completely wrong.

Great food, slow service, and bad customer service. We called to double check where we could park. At no time were we told we couldn’t park in the numbered spots, so our car was towed. We were unceremoniously offered a few glasses a wine on the house, which does nothing to remedy the situation at hand.

They didn't let me down on my first visit. The staff was really friendly and attentive, and the appetizer, main meal, and dessert were all wonderful.

Two people, early thursday evening. We made reservations for the earliest table we could get to avoid any rush, 6:45 was what was available. Arrived promptly but still waited around at the front for 10 minutes before anybody acknowledged us or came to seat us. We were told they didn't have enough menus available and were handed two small folded printouts with tiny text. Our server was friendly but flustered. It would be 15 minutes before we got water, an hour before bread arrived, and when all was said and done the entire affair took over two and a half hours. Before our entrees arrived our server appeared to give excuses why the food was taking so long, offered to comp us dessert, and then proceeded to disappear for another half hour. After we finished our food nobody was available to check on us, clear our table, fill water, for over 20 minutes. The wait became so frustrating as to feel like we were being held somewhere we no longer wished to be at and we were paying for the experience. We had to make a sincere effort to get anyone's attention to request our check and simply get the desserrs to go, which was embarrassing and clearly a scene to the other diners. I heard several servers give several different reasons to the tables around us for why the service was so subpar that evening as one table had just been sat and began to realize the tables around them were frustrated at having been there so long. Come to find out the reason our server was MIA for most of the meal was they had to pull double duty as a cook in the kitchen, hence all their tables getting to wait extra long on basic service needs like water. On top of everything else the menu stated my entree was supposed to come with a side penne, which if that was the case they completely forgot to bring! When the bill arrived I was shocked to see I had been charged for veal when I had ordered chicken. This sent me on a stress spiral as I have ethical qualms with veal, and I was unable to determine if they had served me veal by mistake. My server finally came out and assured me she had cooked my meal personally and it was chicken not veal. I'm not sure if I believe her as it felt like maybe she was pandering to my insecurities, and it seemed odd how thin and weirdly breaded the chicken cutlets and been in retrospect. I am not exaggerating or being hyperbolic when I say this was truly the worst dining experience I can recall in many years. We are not well off, this was a special occasion where we decided to splurge and go eat somewhere we could normally not afford as a special treat, and the whole experience was frustrating and disheartening. It didn't feel pampering or special. I feel ripped off as we paid a lot for a fine dining experience and experienced a kitchen nightmare instead.

Atmosphere- Very nice, of the décor they do have, it's very good. could use more nice paintings on some of the barer walls. Great location in the midst of downtown Gainesville. Service- Our waitress was very busy HOWEVER the other servers and bartender were doing a great job checking in on us and keeping us taken care of. We did have some hiccups with food coming out but no major problems and mistakes were corrected on the bill. Food apps- Prosciutto was phenomenal and mushrooms were niche filling salads- mid entrées- all pretty good, the more simple options were executed more clearly and therefore were more enjoyable desert- can't go wrong

The food tasted like it was microwaved and not fresh The service was slow and the food didnt come out for everyone at the same time but delivered 2 at a time. We were a table of 5 and a 20% gratuity was added to our check and then taxed on top of it!!! Not nearly worth the cost for the food and service we received. Many other better places to go. Very disappointing.

Unbelievable Italian food !!! And they couldn’t be any nicer!!

A friend and I made dinner reservations for 7:15pm. We arrived at 7 in order to have a pre-dinner drink. When we walked up to the bar, which had four bar chairs available to sit in, we were surprised when the bartender told us that it wasn’t a sit-down bar; it was for service only for the tables. So we stood there dry for 15 minutes until they had our table ready. Once seated, an extremely sweaty waiter greeted us, and asked if we were ready to order. We replied that we needed drinks first. My friend had a cosmopolitan and I had a tiaramasu martini. Hers was garnished with a single sliver of lemon, but mine had no garnish at all. The flavor was good, but there was nothing special about it. For the price you’d expect more. When the drinks came we ordered dinner. I ordered the Linguine Pesto and my friend ordered the lobster ravioli special. The salads took 45 minutes to arrive. The entrees took another 45 minutes after that. During our wait, we questioned the waiter if our order was missed, but he replied that they were just behind—even though other tables seated after were already being served their meals. When we pointed that fact out, he simply said that our meals would be out shortly but took another 15 min from there. You would have thought that given the extremely long wait for food that the waiter would have given us a complimentary drink, but he didn’t, so we just waited and waited. The food did eventually come. The flavor of the food is what salvaged this review from being a one-star review. It was delicious. Would I come here again! Nope. It’s clearly not very well managed. There are so many places to eat that are also delicious, but probably provide better service.

Not the best experience, but not the worst either. Firstly, to make a reservation, you must put your credit card down as collateral. Annoying, and definitely not common among restaurants in Gainesville. Upon arrival, we walked up to the hostess stand, where we were not acknowledged for several minutes. When the hostess finally acknowledged our presence, she was rude, acting as if we were a bother. She said that she would need to prepare our table and instructed us to wait outside until it was ready. I understand that the interior of the restaurant is small and there is no good area to wait inside, but the combination of the icy reception and then being told to move outside to wait was less than a stellar first impression. Things improved after we were seated, our waitress was nice and the homemade bread was piping hot and delicious. However, my water was also warm and remained unfilled most of the night. The house salad was lackluster, but my entree made up for it. The baked ziti (with added chicken) was absolutely delicious. While my girlfriend’s linguine bolognese was good, but dry. The price wasn’t bad and the atmosphere was fine. Overall, while my ziti was genuinely impressive, I would choose Carrabba's for a holistically superior dining experience. The food and service were Awesome at Amelia's! We had chicken Marsala and eggplant parmesan - both were delicious and the sauce for each entree was the best we've tasted! I have been to Amelia's numerous times since moving to Gainesville 14 yrs ago and had disappointed me. This last visit surprised me, I had reservations for four and was seated promptly, service was quick with appetizers and drink's yet dinner took about an hour and half after ordering. The veal parmigiana which I ordered was very salty, yet everyone else enjoyed their meals. It seems more tables have been added which I believe added to the delay of our meals but overall I will not allow this one visit to deter me from returning.

This evening broke my heart. My wife and I had tried for several weeks to get a reservation here. She loves fettuccine Alfredo. Finally got a reservation for 8 p.m. we showed up 15 min early, as you should, and let them know we were there. The hostess said give me 10 min and I'll get you seated, so we waited in the courtyard. Beautiful brick courtyard with jasmine growing everywhere. Just romantic. We get taken through the restaraunt to a room way in the back. It was romantic and quiet. Our table had just been reset. We sat in a room with 3 dirty tables and a long party table full of dishes napkins and drinks from the time we got there, till we left. The poor waitress was so frazzled. I will not name her because she was kind and did her best and was apologetic. She was the only waitress for 7 tables and a huge party. Probably understaffed, like the rest of most business today so we have become accustomed to long waits, that wasnt the problem. I ordered chicken parmesan with a Ceasars salad $25+ and she ordered fettuccine alfredo $22+. Not bad for fine dining. I'd say we waited 40 min for the food to come out. I got my salad as a precursor and it tasted like lettuce mixed with mayo and parmesan. Not Cesar. The chx parm came out piping hot, but burnt.. super burnt. They took it back, then my pasta came out. So I had pasta and no parm lol. The pasta sauce was so salty, I couldn't even swallow it. So my pasta sat for another 5-7 min before my new chicken parm came out. It wasn't burnt. It was beautiful, piping hot with sauce and gooey mozzarella cheese dripping off of it...except it was the super salty sauce. The waitress automatically took off my meal and offered a free dessert. We came to the restaurant on NYE. Overall our experience was less than satisfactory. The bottle of wine we ordered and complementary bread did not come until we had already finished our appetizer. We felt that we were a nuisance to our waiter so we kept it very short with him. The spicy marinara pasta with shrimp was disappointing as the sauce lacked depth of flavor and the shrimp were overcooked. The pesto fettucine and lobster ravioli were fine. The veal dish was the star of the show and was actually pretty tasty. Normally we would stay for dessert but it seemed that the table next to us was not impressed with theirs so we skipped that course. 1 star for the veal dish and another for the complementary bread. We chose Amelia’s because of several recommendations in a local UF parents page. Highly disappointed. Service was terrible, food was mediocre at best (and all of our entrees didn’t even come out at the same time. I ordered a veal dish that had maybe, and I stress maybe, 2 ounces of veal on it. The lemon sauce was beyond sour. The other dishes were just average.). I would NOT recommend this restaurant. Two hours of sitting there waiting on food. Never again.
