Small place in a strip mall. Never had Korean food before so I didn’t know what to expect. Food was delicious and the server was patient and kind, explaining each dish. The bowl was excellent!

Always good food, the owners and wait staff couldn’t be nicer. They always make us feel like family. They go out of their way to make everyone feel special. I have never been anywhere that the waitstaff worked any harder.

This place always hits the mark each time we go. Both Kimberly and her mother provide excellent service and everything tastes so good. All the banchan (small sides) that are served are homemade and delicious. The kimchi is also one of the best I have had.

This place is awesome. The best service anywhere. Friendly and very personable. And the food is fantastic. Our every experience there has been extraordinary.

If I could rate this 6 stars I would! This was my first time at Asahi and I loved it, the food was amazing, especially the pork belly, the waitress was so sweet and was so considerate, she even gave us free drinks and snacks and even offered more. Even as the only worker, she still gave us an amazing time.

This place is absolutely amazing. The food was so so good and filling. And don't even get me started on the service. The lady was SO SO SO kind and attentive. She checked on us multiple times, always making sure we were happy and situated. We also received free drinks and snacks which was absolutely wonderful. And to be frank, we came very close to closing and were still seated with open arms. I will continue to come back to this restaurant and recommend everyone to do the same.

There are not enough stars to properly rate this awesome little place. While not particularly a large restaurant, tables and booths are positioned so that you don't feel like you are next to that lady in the waiting room of the Doctors office who insistently talks with you. Very comfortable atmosphere. There are two most stellar main attractions however. The first, this is arguably the best Korean food I've tasted in my multicultural experience. Secondly, and then there's Kim. I had already been warned by reading the reviews both here and elsewhere, that Kim was the most highly regarded, respected, and loved front end staff member anyone has had the pleasure of meeting. With amazing speed, outstanding agility, and serious attention to customers, Kim takes care of the entire front end by herself!! Not a single table, or booth, that i saw, was ignored or left wanting. I had the BBQ Makeral as my main dish. My wife had a generous helping of Beef Bulgogi. And of course the table was stocked with the plethora of little dishes of sides, which Kim kept restocking when my wife and I would devour it clean. I cannot shout loud enough from the highest rooftop in Virginia Beach. Asahi Korean Resteraunt sets the bar pretty high. Poor Miss Kim gave us a tearfully joyous reaction to the significant tip my wife left on our $52 tab. She almost hugged us, telling us we are family now. She even followed us outside to our truck to make sure we made it okay. We have four daughters, all grown and out of the house. Each daughter has had their own share as a server in a restaurant. So I speak with experience when I say, every server from Virginia Beach Ocean Front to Waterside in Norfolk, and in between, should come here and have a meal to watch how to properly function with customer service. Kim is a treasure!!

So, at first glance, I wasn’t sure if this place was open, as the parking lot was empty and the windows are not see-through. Not going to lie, I judged the book by its cover and was blown away. Walked in to a quaint, yet modern atmosphere that I loved the second I walked in. The waitress was extremely welcoming and hospitable and made me feel like I was a guest at a friend’s family dinner, rather than being at a restaurant. She even inquired if there were any food allergies, which I have very rarely seen. The thing that made this amazing was they genuinely wanted to ensure you had an amazing experience. I ended up getting the “hot stone bowl” item, which was very good and felt like an experience along with some great taste. Overall great experience, and it’s not very often I write a review like this, prior to leaving to ensure I give them the accolades they deserve. Would recommend. If I could give 6 stars for service, I would.

This was my first time trying Korean, and it was so good!! The restaurant is located toward the end of a small strip mall and has a really cozy, inviting ambiance inside. As I waited for my takeout, I watched the restaurant quickly fill up. I was offered a pretzel snack and tea. The spouse and I ordered the beef bulgogi and chicken bulgogi. Portion sizes were generous and very tasty. We also loved the little sides that came with the meal. We'll definitely be back and will eat inside. I observed the lady running the front of house as she took everyone's orders and served the food. She radiated joy and was incredibly kind.

This was such an amazing meal! This was made with love and over the top satisfaction on the hunger annihilation scale! Fresh flavors and just a delicious meal. I loved eating here.

I have tried every Korean and Asian places in Hampton roads and Asahi is the best one.

I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while because of the great reviews. Finally went and LOVED it! The staff is incredibly friendly and the food was amazing. Forgot to take a picture before eating because we were enjoying it so much. She brought me a to-go cup of the tea as we were leaving because I had already drank two cups! We will be back soon!

I came here because the reviews raved about this place. We came and we were warmly greeted. They keep the menu concise, the service is amazing, and of course the FOOD was spectacular! I've been disappointed by most Korean places because I've had Korean at authentic restaurants before. This is my new favorite! Last but not least is the care and love they put in what they do. The taste of the food and the warmth from the waitress provides a family like atmosphere. That's an awesome feeling to have in a restaurant setting. So happy to have found it. We'll definitely be coming more!

The service was fantastic with delicious food to match. If you’re visiting or a local, I’d say this is a must visit if you want to try or love Korean food! I’d describe the space and atmosphere as cozy. The restaurant is run by a woman and her mother, so some patience from the customer is appreciated. Although there was only one person managing the front of house, she did not skip a beat. She greeted every customer, asked about dietary restrictions, served food, kept drinks full, and still made time to make conversation, which I really appreciated.

I can't say enough good things about Asahi! Generally run by a mother-daughter team (mom's cooking, daughter waiting tables), you'd think there were tons of people in the kitchen for how fast the food comes out. And it's delicious! The level of service is unparalleled. Three of us came for dinner. One person got a stomachache midway through the meal due to ongoing medical issues totally unrelated to the food. The waitress immediately noticed and brought him what he said was the best bone broth he's ever had, as well as a 7-Up to help settle his stomach. She noticed how much we liked the tea and brought us to-go cups of it with our check. Our total for three dinners with appetizer was just over $80. I've been here many times and it's always such a wonderful time. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants anywhere.

If i could give 7 stars then i would. Came to celebrate our 8 years anniversary during dinner, food was delicious, the service was superb and very generous. She surprised us with free dessert and some soju for the anniversary 😊 Thank you eonni, and we will def come back if we visit the town again.

I rarely give 5 stars but this place was amazing. The food was great. We had the Hot Stone Bibimbap and Fish Soup. Both were as good as (or better than) anything I've ever had in Korea. I think the banchan, soy sauce, and chilli paste are made in house. The lady helping us could not have been more friendly. A very nice experience. I can't wait to go back with more friends. After traveling and dining all over the world, this unassuming spot will have my girlfriend and I coming back every single time. Literally the sweetest, most attentive and kind server we have ever had, while her mom was in the back cooking us phenomenal authentic Korean food. Can’t say enough great things about this place! I've been going here with my wife since 2018. The owner and main waitress are super nice. I have never gone here and not felt like I was eating at some wholesome distant relatives house just serving me the best they have to offer. They are courteous, and provide you anything even if it's not in the menu. I can't believe seeing anyone giving this place a 1 star. If the entire review section is 5 stars and you're one of the 3 negative reviews, you're the one who's wrong. The menu has decreased in size but this only signifies that they concentrate on these individual dishes even more so making them delicious. I always get free drinks to go and an extra desert every time. The people at Asahi really remember you and call you by your first name. I may have not been to Korea but this is some of my favorite Korean food places ever! So if you like quaint and traditional food with probably one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had... and I always have a great time there. I've been there dozens of times and plan on going even more. No other Korean restaurants compare. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In a strip shopping center that looks dead, but don't be deceived. Small but pleasant dining room. Casual atmosphere. Very limited menu, but excellent food. Service is aggressively attentive to a fault.

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. It is very adorable and well decorated in the main eating room. The waitress has always been so sweet and so kind every time I've come. She brought tea to-go for my dad to help his throat and brought my grandmother a treat for her birthday. Theyll sometimes give you a cut up icee pop after you finish your food as well, which I thought was so friendly [and Id never had thst happen before so I was like, "Oh this is so cool!!"]. They really know how to be remembered by the people who visit! I look forward to keep coming back whenever I'm in the area 💗

Outstanding service! Came in on a very hot and humid evening for a quick meal. I was greeted and served by the owner who made sure I had everything I needee: cold punch, barley tea,water, and side dishes. Food was as good as always. I appreciated the small selection that made it easy to pick.

The worker was very generous and kind. She gave us complimentary drinks, fruit, and more to have an amazing stay.

Honestly the best service I have ever had at any restaurant. Server was attentive from the very moment I stepped in. Food was amazing.

The food is beyond amazing, everything is just utterly incredible. When we went it was a busy night but we still received all of our food in a quick fashion. All of it was hot and served fresh. The kimchi was delicious, the pickled radish was addictive. Our hostess/waitress was so kind and bubbly, she truly made the experience all the more wonderful. She also brought us some barely was that was warming and comforting. You cannot go wrong with a visit here.

This is the best food in Virginia Beach. It is always cooked and seasoned to perfection with generous, interesting, fresh sides and though the menu is limited, every single dish we have tried has been superb. It also happens to be owned by the kindest family ever.

Brilliant little restaurant, and the Staff are absolutely wonderful. The main hostess/ server is very sweet and energetic, and other server was very kind. The food was fantastic; extremely well made and very quick. The music is good, and at a good volume. The atmosphere and decor are very cozy. Asahi was a new spot for me and my wife. Normally we eat at a Korean restaurant that's closer to us, but we wanted to branch out. When we arrived, it was pretty quiet but soon more & more people showed up. The hostess is extremely kind and attentive. She was able to help us get exactly what we wanted and explained some side dishes we hadn't had before. Great experience and great food! I got the samgyeopsal and enjoyed every bite. Wonderful little spot. We will be back!

That was written after our first visit in 2012: "It was the most pleasant resent discovery in VB for us. We had lunch and ordered Dolsot Bi Bim Bab and Ja Jang Myun ( I hope I am correct in spelling) which were absolutely wonderful. The Ban Chan was a bit limited but quite tasty too. The service was welcoming and very friendly and the ambiance felt nice and cozy. We can't say that we are big experts on Korean food but we LOVE it and had our multiple share of restaurants in New York's Koreatown and Flushing. We think Asahi is in some points tasted better then most of them. We definitely going to be back every time we are in the area and it has our highest recommendation to all who loves Korean food." Maybe the ownership changed, but after couple more visits through the years our opinion started to change. And after yesterday's dinner we've decided NO MORE VISITS. Why? The menu was limited to the bare minimum and even those dishes were so awful in taste (not even SLIGHTLY reminding the taste of good Korean Cuisine), very limited in portion size and looking really not appetising). Who are those people who can like this food and write so misleading reviews beats me. Either they didn't taste REAL KOREAN FOOD, or just missing the taste buds in their mouths. If I could I'd give 0** in my rating.

The best Korean spot in Virginia Beach (I've tried other places here). Ive been craving korean bbq and This one hit the spot for me. The food is made in the back BUT that doesn't take away from the taste. It's a small shin-dig perfect for the chill vibez. Trust the previous reviews.

My family, including my parents, were impressed with the kindness of the host/waitress and the quality of authentic Korean food. My mom was impressed, which is saying a lot! They were so sweet to my kids, and made all of us feel so welcome. Everything was delicious!

My son dragged me to Asahi, I was very skeptical as i don't adventure far from American, Italian, Mexican, etc. first of all, our hostess and waitress Kimberly was the most pleasant and accommodating wait staff that I have ever encountered in my 59 years of life. She helped me with my questions, and I ordered the Hot Stone Bowl with beef. Kimberly was a very busy bee but made us feel like we were the only ones in the room. She was kind, respectful and such a joy to be around. my food was amazing, "so much of it too!" and the price of the hot stone bowl was very fair. Around 15.00. my bill was a bit high, but I was so emersed in the food and drink that I was trying everything and having a great time doing so. i left the restaurant feeling full and having a dining experience that I fully enjoyed with awesome flavors. I'm a true customer for life and Kimberly welcomed me to the Asahi family. thanks, Kimberly, for the great dining experience, and tell your mother she is an amazing cook too!!

I don’t usually write reviews but I felt the need to for Asahi today. I’ve been here two other times with some friends which I should’ve written a review before but today I brought my dad to try it out and so I finally decided to write my review! We were welcomed in by Kimberly and she is just so awesome! My dad is not all too comfortable venturing out to try different restaurants and such but I just so happened to convince him to try out Asahi here and he absolutely loved it. Kimberly was so accommodating and informative on the dishes and my dad was trying out all these different kinds of things which he loved! Every time I’ve been here I felt so welcomed as if I was a part of the family and every time I come here I am always left with a positive experience with laughs and being full! The hot stone bowl is my go to but I might venture out to try more dishes, I will definitely be back and I’m so thankful for Kimberly’s service and being so helpful to us as we dined. Thank you again!

We could not be more pleased with the service, food, atmosphere and prices. We got the Hot Stone Bibimbap, Kimchi Jjigae and Steamed Dumplings. The complementary tea was plentiful and delicious, we enjoyed it so much we were sent home with some. Every last item was delicious and extremely filling. The portions were big enough for my husband and I to share and soup to take home.

Everytime we are in the area, we try to make it to Asahi. The food is amazingly flavorful. More on home cooked meal taste than typical korean restaurants. The space is limited but the owner goes above and beyond to take care of the customers and make sure they are taken care of. We would recommend Asahi to anyone looking for a grest authentic Korean restaurant.

Twice I have gone to this restaurant and twice, my total amount charged to my credit card was a few dollars more than I remembered. Our first time there was good experience as the service was friendly and we were given hot teas right away for free and was even offered to take a cup home. I left 10 percent tip and when I checked the amount charged on my account, it was two dollars more than I remembered. The second time there, we went with our friends. We asked for hot tea, we were charged 12 dollars for two cups of hot tea. We thoughtbit was free since they gave us free hot tea the first time. The tea is good but not 6 dollars good. They gave kids free rice and side dishes so I gave my bowl of rice to my kids and asked for a second bowl (as I did my first time there, no additional charges) but this time I was charged 3.99. I grew up in a family restaurant, and this is not how you run business. Kim was hospitable and gave us good service but I definitely felt deceived at the end with all the extra charges, plus adding a few dollars to the total hoping I wouldn't notice. That is just wrong. I normally don't like to write negative reviews, especially to a small family business but what she did was just wrong.

Hands down the best korean restaurant in the US! Not only is the food outstanding i would drive past 10 korean restaurants just to be served by the owner , her name escapes me now. She is without a doubt, the most customer focused restauranteur I've have ever met. And I have eaten all over the world. Well done, Asahi

This was my first real Korean restaurant. Now we want to move to Seoul. Food was amazing. Loved the banchan. Kimberly was amazing and friendly. She understood the little Korean I've learned despite my horrible pronunciation. You got customers for life!

I was sad when they temporarily closed, but was ecstatic to finally return here last week to eat their food and see Unni again. I always get the hot stone bibimbap and it tastes just the way I remember it a long time ago. It's gives me such great comfort food feeling. This is one of those places that is hard to forget for me. The food is so delicious. Although, the menu is limited to a few items the last time I was at Asahi. A really friendly and warm host. If I'm ever back in the area I would totally stop by again.

The woman who served us was incredibly kind and attentive. So much so, she realized we were travelling and gave us complementary lemonade and canned sodas, and to-go hot tea since it was cold that night! As for what I can guess is a routine experience, the dinner menu seems limited, but that's because what's in the menu is (from what I believe she was saying) guaranteed to be prepared; the person I was with ordered Galbi which wasn't on the menu (because it wasn't a guarantee), so you should ask if they have whatever is your favorite meal available. Anyway, the Chicken Bulgogi and the Galbi was delicious, and it was cheaper than other places we've been to. We don't live in Virginia, but I'd actually go here more often when I visit again.

Found this place by looking for the highest-rated reviews. The experience did not disappoint. The food was great and the service was even better. Highly recommend you come see for yourself. I would come back when I'm in town.

We were celebrating my cousin's birthday and it was our first time trying Asahi. The food was delicious, some of the best Korean food I've tried around here in Virginia Beach, honestly! They were all very sweet and attentive, and even gave my cousin a sweet birthday dessert! The entire atmosphere of the restaurant was very welcoming and relaxing, we will definitely be back again (and again, haha). If you are looking for a nice dinner spot with amazing food and just as amazing service, I definitely would recommend Asahi!!

I came here for the first time for a birthday dinner and I am SO satisfied with the visit. It is a small business which makes the restaurant even better. The absolute best Korean food in Hampton Roads, hands down!

I'll start by saying that this was my first experience with Korean food and came here with friends who highly recommend this place. Menu is small but the food is incredible. Service was good as well. My only complaint is the beer is $16 a bottle. It's not on the menu so I didn't know the price until I got the bill and I think that's a little ridiculous. That being said I would definitely go back and enjoy my meal with a water.

If you are dissuaded by the exterior, don’t be. Go in. Enjoy. Thank me later. Only drawback is it’s a little small and the menu is slightly limited. Best for groups of 4 or less and folks who want staple Korean-American food without the fluff.

This place is amazing! The cook is a Korean mother that puts it down in the kitchen. All meals come with a variety of kimchee to enjoy as appetizers.
