Great experience. We went twice in two months when visiting Stowe. A well located place. Such nice waiters and great service. If you like beers, give a try to the APA Edward’s you won’t regret it. And it’s one of the few places where you can eat and who close at 10pm and not 9pm like the other places in Stowe.

Nickel and dime you here. $1 for a slice of a tomato on your burger, an extra $1 for Tajín on the rim of your margarita, 3% extra for using credit card…it’s a little too much. Food was fine. Definitely not the best burger in Stowe. I had the head banger - a burger with jalapeño. It was good if you got the right bite, but otherwise it was just a burger. Duck wontons were great.

Good choice for a chilled beer and food

Hands down the best burger in Stowe (and I tasted all of them on a recent trip). I will never go anywhere else for a burger! Waitress was great, very friendly and patient with my kids. Yummy drinks and great atmosphere. I can't wait to go back again!

This is hands down the best burger in Stowe and it must be newer than other restaurants that placed higher on the "best burger" list (I won't name them out of courtesy). I recently did a burger test while in Stowe for a week with my family and Backyard was absolutely the best burger out of the 4 that I had on this list. I have no doubt it will be in the top 3 soon.

Really cheerful waiter and superb service! We loved our dishes, it was delicious and generous in portion. We had a turkey sandwich and a Philly steak sandwich with a house salad. Good atmosphere and good selection of beers, thank you!!

I ordered the Bacon Bailey and Hazen Blue burger with sweet potato fries. There were 10 in our party and I’m pretty sure we ordered most of their burgers. O.M.G. Their claims to be “the best burger you’ll ever have in your life” was dead on!! This burger was huge and they don’t skimp on that blue cheese. It was a dream burger!! I have been dreaming of this thing ever since! If I didn’t live 6 hours away, I’d jump right back in my car! We will for certain be back many times. Service was amazing, food presentation was great, staff extremely warm and friendly. What a GREAT place!

Great spot with some extremely on point burgers. The Local Burger was a fabulous and delicious combination that hit that burger craving exactly in the right spot. The beer selection and bar atmosphere is friendly for all, focusing on the many local favorites and gives one the chance to sample som variety and flavor of the state!

Outstanding service, great cocktails and food with a local twist on the ingredients. This will be a must-visit every time we come up now

At the Backyard restaurant in Stowe Vermont When we arrived it was raining and I believe that the crowd was diminished because of that. We were inside but there is an outside seating area (duh! Backyard). Staff members were observed with tee shirts that indicated that their primary responsibility was outside but apparently not needed at the time. A homey place with eclectic decorations and an extremely long bar with seating the whole length. The selection of beer, in chalk writing, is at the bar and on the opposite wall is a chalk board with staff picks for beer. Mell took care of us but was absent when the current staff picks were collected. His suggestion was blood orange Radler and I think it was a good suggestion – light with good flavor. The others ordered the appetizer of fried Brussel sprouts (a huge bowl full was brought) with siracha crema. I don’t do Brussel sprouts but they managed to eat them all. I ordered the Philly Cheese steak with a substitution of Swiss cheese instead of the American cheese. One other ordered the Bacon and Bailey Hazen Blue Burger without a bun. No mention of doneness was made but it came out just right – a little pink in the center so not well done. The other one ordered the Carne Asada Tacos (3) and that worked well for her. Mell checked on us frequently to see if everything was OK. The establishment serves liquor but we noticed several family groups with well-behaved children. All in all it was a delightful experience. Recommended.

Stopped for dinner.. fish tacos were awesome as was the burger! Terrific draft beer selection and lovely staff. Would recommend.

Had an absolutely great time here. Must try the duck wontons and the peanut butter chocolate cake dessert!! Great environment overall. We will for sure be back :)

Backyard was excellent! Long drive up and decided to stop in on our way to Smuggs. Sorry no pictures we all dug tight in. Got a whiskey BBQ smash burger, bacon smashburger, Chipotle chicken tacos and Corn "ribs" appetizer. Burgers had perfect Maillard reaction making crispy edges. Homemade chips were good. Side of tots was a little oily but still excellent.Tacos were nicely seasoned but could have used more heat. Great indoor and outdoor space. If you sit inside and are larger maybe skip the booth and go with a table as booths were a little tight. We will definitely go back and try them again!

One of thee best burgers I've ever had!!!

One of the few establishments in Stowe open “late” (10PM) every night of the week. Hidden behind other businesses, pushed up against a rock face and with its dirt and gravel parking lot, this place seems sufficiently and authentically Vermont. There is inside and outside seating. The food selection contained bar food staples as well as creative and unique offerings. There is a focus on tater tots which were crispy and delicious. We opted for mocktails which were also creative. The service was slow and clumsy although friendly. Friendliness goes a long way in compensating for any other deficiencies in service. Importantly, our meal arrived hot from the kitchen. Overall a satisfying meal and we will add this restaurant to our list of regulars.

First time I stopped in, the food was amazing. The service was great, and the drinks were even better. I highly recommend this place if you’re a Vermonter or just passing through.

This was an unexpected surprise. All the restaurants in the area were packed and had long waits, so we stumbled into this restaurant and were so glad we did! The food was fantastic with huge portions! My daughter and her friend said the Buffalo chicken sandwich was the best they ever had. It was a very laid back place with great prices. I would definitely return!

This was my first time here since they revamped a while back. While I miss the pool table and real fire place, the new menu is awesome, lots of good food, and the staff was great.

The mushroom Swiss burger was quite possibly the best burger i have ever had and the tots are great too. We sat on the patio and the chairs aren’t comfortable but that’s far from a deal-breaker. Friendly service from a very young lady who was clueless about beer profiles but again, nbd. Who cares? The burger was sublime.

Ordered take away. The service was quick and friendly. I would love to have the tachos in person by the time we got them home they were cold (which is totally our fault). They were still fantastic but I think they’d be phenomenal warmer.

Family stopped at this location for lunch while we were spending the day in the Stowe area, since we received recommendations as this being the place to try for a great local burger. Restaurant was mildly busy at the time of our arrival. We were greeted and seated fairly quickly after arriving. Our table was outside with the majority of the other patrons, which was somewhat noisy and definitely warm that early afternoon. Waitress was polite but not overly punctual. Seemed like she may have been stretched thin covering all the tables outside (i.e., we only saw one other server helping out a couple times during the hour or so that we were there). Took a fair amount of time between check-ins and usually had to wait a while to get anything that we requested. On the plus side, the food was as good (or even better) than expected. Burgers were wonderfully prepared, and the tator tots were crisp and pleasingly seasoned. Sodas tasted funny, but it seems like their fountain dispenser was having troubles. As good as the food was, I’m not sure if our meals and drinks were worth almost $25 per person.

Got food to go from here. The duck wontons were very creative and delicious as were the sweet potatoe fries. We also got the queso but wasn't totally sold on it, seemed something was off with it and tasted odd. Overall still a great experience.

Was recommended to go here by a friend. I'm very happy that we followed their suggestion. The burgers and tater kegs are amazing. Staff is courteous and friendly. Well worth the 1 hour drive we made to get there. Edit: This review just popped up in my feed and I am now sad that I do not have those tater kegs. Hope to see you guys again next January.

I finally had the pleasure of visiting Backdoor after a MTB ride, and I must say it is an excellent choice for post-ride relaxation. The service is exceptionally friendly, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Post ride fuel-up, my taste buds were delighted by the mouthwatering dishes served at Backdoor. To start off, I ordered the fried Brussel sprouts, and they were simply divine. The crispy exterior combined with the tender and flavorful sprouts were nothing short of satisfying. For the main, I couldn't resist trying their mushroom and Swiss burger. The burger patty was cooked to perfection, with a juicy and succulent texture. The combination of the earthy mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese elevated the burger to a whole new level of deliciousness. Overall, my experience at Backdoor was nothing short of exceptional. From the friendly service to the delectable food, every aspect of my visit was top-notch. I highly recommend it as an ideal spot to unwind and indulge in a satisfying meal after a long (or short) MTB ride.

This place is AMAZING! The yard crew, the yard playlist and yard atmosphere were all top stars!

Food is good. But staff is not as friendly. And they didn’t even tell me there was a CC surcharge. They even read me the wrong total. I wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t have the receipt

Came here after viewing the eclipse and sat at the bar. Staff were super friendly. The kitchen was understandably backed up from the post eclipse dinner rush, but they made sure we had drinks and let us know things were a little delayed (it didn't actually feel like a wait because the atmosphere was good and we had drinks).

The food was fabulous! Service was impeccable, our server Makayla made the perfect suggestions for what we were in the mood for! Makayla was prompt, her service was flawless and our orders were EXACTLY as we requested! The food was fast, fresh and absolutely delish! Everything we ordered was the best I’ve had ! If I could give the Backyard and Makayla 10 Stars I would!

My first time and I'll be going back for sure. The popcorn chicken was a fantastic appetizer. The burgers were awesome. It wasn't busy, but the service was still great. They had a good tap list as well. I can't recommend it enough.

We started with the tater kegs and they were amazing! The pickled jalapeños with the Chipotle ranch sauce paired very well with the extra large tots. The fish tacos were stunning to the T! The black bean burger was cooked perfectly and the Chipotle ranch sauce pairs well with it. Our daughter says the Plain Jane smash burger was delicious! The tots as a side are crisp and have a faint dusting of garlic. Yum!!!

I love the Backyard-- the service and food is always phenomenal. I'm a big fan of their pork tots, and their cocktails are great. Their sweet potato fries are to die for. My only complaint is the parking lot, which has some gigantic holes, but I can't really hold that against anything salient with the restaurant. I have to say that even when they're slammed, the food comes out quickly and properly done, and the wait staff are always nice! Definitely stop by for a beer and burger-- you won't be disappointed!!

We had only appetizers and drinks. Service was fast and friendly. My friends enjoyed the tater tots columns. I ordered roasted Brussels sprouts. The serving size was generous and the sprouts were roasted perfectly.

Husband and I stopped here shortly after getting into Stowe. Really good beer selection and food was excellent. Bartenders were polite and attentive.

Absolutely amazing, if I could give more stars I would. I've traveled and mushroom and Swiss burger was easily top 5 ever. The apps I got was large stuffed tots with peppers and whatever the sauce was fantastic. Perfect balance of happy and healthy food. Would absolutely recommend and will be back soon. Great job

Really great hidden spot for dinner. Don't take reservations but arrived on a Monday evening around 7:45pm and waited 5 min for a table. Ordered nachos as an appetizer - was a bit different (cheese sauce instead of real melted cheese, no salsa). Burgers are top-notch, probably one of the best we've had and comes with a healthy dose of kettle chips. Food came fast, service was great. Definitely a recommendation if you want a laid-back place to eat.

We went for lunch, we wanted something small, so we got buffalo chicken tater tots, fried Brussels, and carne asada tacos. They were mad good, the waitress was checking in on us time to time, she was awesome! The atmosphere gives like those middle of no where awesome karaoke bar vibes like in that movie with Katherine Heigl in 28 dresses with James Marsden. I love it, it's the vibez.vibe. We spent around $50 not including tip. The food was a lot for 2 people who weren't hungry. Also they're literally in the backyard.

Admittedly it was winter break for New England schools so the bar was a lot busier than usual and they had one bartender down. Even so, they did their best and were super friendly, so delays and so on were understandable. So - good selection of draft beers and cans, full bar, and the food was on point. Kid friendly, and the place cleared out by 830, so if you don't want to wait, that would be your time. Overall, worth going to.

This place is exceedingly well run and has some serious cooking chops in the kitchen. Elevated bar food at its best - highly recommend.

Tldr: Slow service and under-seasoned food I really wanted to like it, but I found Backyard mediocre for the 40 minutes we waited to get in on a Saturday night (the wait was not the problem. I expect a decent wait during ski season). The Atmosphere I'll start with the good and shout out the vibe! Nice music and well furnished interior. +1 star for great atmosphere. The Service I try not to be too harsh on service in a review because you never know when a place is having an off night, but speaking to my experience, the service was slow and didn't improve as the restaurant started to empty out later in the night. Everyone was kind and the hostess was attentive, but it was fairly difficult to flag down the wait staff and our waters were only refilled once during our meal. This isn't a major complaint, but it's something that I care about in a dining experience. I just spent two days on the slopes, I'm thirsty, and I'm not the only one. The Food I had the buffalo chicken tots and tried two of the burgers (I forget which two). The tots were decent. Really nice crispy chicken on top but the tots themselves kind of just steamed on the plate beneath and fell apart to mush. Not much flavor on the plate once the chicken got picked off. I think this would've been a pretty nice appetizer plate if they'd given us a side of blue cheese or ranch or ketchup to dip the tots in. The burgers were my big disappointment of the night. They label them as smash burgers and will tell you this if you try to order yours cooked medium, but the patties were too thick and we found that they were cooked inconsistently across my table. Mine had a bit of pink in the middle (which I like), while my friend's was grey throughout and leathery. A true thin smash burger patty would've been better in either case. My biggest problem with Backyard's burgers is that they didn't salt them. You HAVE to salt a burger patty or the meat is going to taste like nothing. This was a huge letdown from a restaurant that prides itself on its burgers and looking at some of the other critical reviews here I don't think this was a one-off occurrence. Some of the burgers like the mushroom Swiss on paper have great ingredient combos, but they fail to stick the landing because Backyard doesn't season their food. More of a subjective gripe, but your burger by default will come with house potato chips. They're not bad chips once you salt them yourself, but Backyard doesn't offer french fries. Your alternatives are sweet potato fries (not my jam, personally), tater tots that weren't great, or a salad. Every side substitution costs extra and it should be obvious that the majority of people won't prefer chips as a side. From the multiple that I tried, my favorite side substitution is a Caesar salad that costs an extra $5. I know I probably seen like I'm in negative reviewer mode at this point but paying an extra $5 for a decent side after paying the $16 base menu cost for a mediocre burger didn't sit well with me. Chances are you're not overly concerned with dollar value when you're already spending hundreds on a ski weekend in the area, but this was just another aspect of the dining experience that I found myself disappointed by. I only visited for a weekend so I can't comment on how Backyard stacks up with other restaurants in the area, but I can't recommend it. My whole party of 7 agreed that you'd get a better burger from shake shack, five guys, or tasty burger. I'd even prefer one from McDonald's or Wendy's.

Second year we came to Stowe for a week long ski vacation and the kids requested this restaurant again. So of course to placate (and we had great experiences last year here) my husband and I brought the kids here again. No complaints (except they were out of brussel sprouts so no brussel sprout tacos - I ordered fish tacos). Food was excellent all around again. My kids loved how the TV showed people backcountry snowboarding and skiing. My daughter loved coloring and the hostess was so nice to give her more coloring pages. Waitress was also very attentive. If we come to Stowe next year, this restaurant will again be on our list of places to eat again.

It took a little longer than usual for our server to take food orders, but it was accidental, and they were very apologetic. Despite this, food came out quickly and our server was great ensuring we enjoyed ourselves. Get their specialty tots or a smash burger and you'll have no regrets. Would definitely come back!!

Awesome local joint. Staff was friendly, food was phenomenal. No complaints at all. Chicken tacos were excellent and juicy, street corn was a great addition. The "local burger" was top notch. The apple bacon jam was seriously something else. Huge kudos to the kitchen staff, amazing. Again, great place with helpful and friendly staff! Check em out

I would highly reccomend Backyard to anyone in Stowe. Food. Drinks and service were all amazing. The burgers are amazing and so fresh. Definitely going to make it an annual visit.

I ate here back in June of this year 2023. It was Phenomenal then !!! What happened ???? Food was terrible. 👿👿👿 This was on 12/27/2023. Did you change the Chef and cooks.?? I ordered the Carnes Tacos, the meat was disgusting. No flavor and it was gray like it had been cooked a week ago. Not the freshness I was expecting. Very dry and bland !!! You tried to over do it with the Pico, in which I asked for on the side. So, not a fan of this. Very disappointed 😞 My friend ordered the Pulled Pork Tots, uggghhh, again, the pork was dry and no flavor. 👎👎👎😤 My other friend ordered the Philly Cheese Steak, again, the meat was very dry and not much flavor. Not as cheesy and gooey like you would expect from that. Oh, and the drinks 🍸 Very watered down and nothing great. Really !!! You did so much better back in June. I honestly can't recommend this place again to anyone !!!

We had a couple drinks and a couple apps, our server was kind and quick. We were early so it was quiet but started filling in as we were headed out. Will stop again if we're back in the area!

The burgers here are great. I had the Local Burger and really enjoyed it. Allie was also super friendly and very easy to talk to which I appreciated. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. Wish I lived locally bc I would be here all the time! 10/10

A great little out of the way eatery that was not touristy and had good parking. It was recommended by a local and we weren't disappointed. The food and service was excellent with a great atmosphere. There were plenty of items on the walls etc to keep us visually engaged and interested and provided topics of conversation with the staff. We loved the quirkiness of the signage of the men and women's toilets.

Few employees and many people. Few restaurants in the area. The food was good. The waiter served us very kindly, but before serving us a glass of water or going to the table, he spent at least 30 minutes. So you have to go with time

The Backyard in Stowe, owned by Ranch Camp, is a fantastic spot. I'd give it a solid 9/10 rating. The ambiance is inviting, and the menu offers a great selection of food and drinks. It is dog friendly, just like Ranch Camp. The menu seems like an expanded Ranch Camp. It is a cool in the wood vibes. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Most places are closed on Monday, so our options were slip. I thought I'd trust my Tripadviser freinds. We sat outside to have a beer and dinner just as the sun was setting. It got a little chilly and Lori moved us inside with a smile, took our order, and was very gracious. I ordered what I thought was a single burger but it had two patties that had tons of flavor. My husband had the mushroom burger and he said it was one of the best he's had in a very only time. We enjoyed every bite.

I stumbled upon this place while looking for a place to eat dinner and I’m so happy I did! I sat at the bar and got a vermontarita and the local burger, both were good but I’m still dreaming about that burger! It was the perfect size, not a monster burger you can’t finish, and had a little sweetness with the maple butter and apple bacon jam. It was a really chill atmosphere and the service was excellent!

Very casual friendly local bar grill with insude and covered outside seating, good craft beer selection, eats menu was centered around burgers (double smashed) and sandwiches and appetizers, nothing complicated at reasonable priced. Wait staff very pleasant.

We went on a Sat afternoon the food was okay. The sweet potato fries were great the salad consisted of a bowl of Romain lettuce, a few cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes. The hotdog was okay the tater tots were cold. The service was fast, but it was really weird that we’re on the back deck with two other families and a server comes and start sweeping up all the dust off the floor while we were trying to eat. The restaurant and summary is okay. Nothing I would go out of my way for.

Amazing food. We got pork tots that were absolutely delicious meaty and cheesy and just messy enough to be awesome without being hard to eat. The art in the restaurant is great, love the deck art. Sweet potatoe fries, burger delish. Find the Backyard and go. You will be glad you did.
