Barbacoa's used to be a staple for us when going through Spearfish. Over the years, the food quality has gone down, the prices have skyrocketed, and the environment is "meh" at best. Last time we were in, the AC wasn't working and it was hotter in the dining area than outside.

The people and service was fine, but the food was bland and had no flavor. Chicken bowl had a ton of inedible pieces of chicken (tendons, gristle). Pop was good. Very overpriced

We were excited to try this place after seeing reviews and photos. When we first walked in the girls working seemed put off by asking for recommendations. We ended up landing on fish tacos and chicken nachos. Fish wasn't fresh, queso was runny, and half filled bowl of chips for nachos. As we sweltered in the hot restaurant eating our mediocre food, we wished the food lived up to the stellar reviews. Only great thing was their Chuck Norris and Honey Habanero Hot Sauce.

We stopped by yesterday and waited quite awhile and the line never moved. We were not greeted and honestly the workers seemed annoyed that there line got even bigger. It was also hot in there, 84 degrees to be exact according to there AC thermostat. The bathrooms are filthy. The prices are ridiculous. We ended up leaving. I don't understand how you can screw up a burrito bar this bad, but barbacoa figured it out. I would be surprised if this place stayed open another 6 months. I will not be back...

7/22/24 - Prices are out of control...$31.40 for 1 bean burrito ($13), 2 fish tacos ($9.5), 1 Perrier water (price unknown), & 1 PBR (price unknown). They never offer a receipt. Two weeks ago a bean burrito was $9... I will no longer spend my money at Barbacoa's. And, since I'm complaining I will mention the fact that the place is hotter than a house fire. Also, there is always a person (usually a female) running the register who is totally clueless about the prices...RIP Barb's

Really wanted to like this place, but food was not fresh and prices were high.

The inconsistency in the amount of food that you get has become out of control. The bowls have kept getting smaller and the prices keep going up. They just recently upped their prices again, it’s now $17 for a burrito bowl. It’s good food but it has stopped being worth the price. If you want good burritos/tacos go to Antunez. It’s cheaper and much more flavorful and you get more food. If you want an affordable burrito bowl go to Qdoba.

One of the only burrito places I’ve seen where you can get fish options incredible service, staffs were polite and friendly

The food here is good. I just have had different experiences with how it’s been prepared(portion wise) depending on who makes it. There hasn’t been consistency. I was disappointed in my most recent experience. The person would fill the scoop of an item and then only use half of it in the burrito and said they’d have to charge double when asked if “more beans” (rest of scoop). I will continue to go, but I know at what time of day would be best from experience.

Our favorite spot in town when MoonCats are passing through or playing in town. We travel from North Dakota and ALWAYS try to stop at this local gem! Support them! Breakfast is great and lunch is too!

I notice in several posts that this business does not honor it's posted hours of operation. Rule #1 in a service business, you never close before your posted hours of operation. This is the most disrespectful way to alienate your customer base and it tells the community you don't care. This seems to be a pattern of many small business operations today in S.D. and I think it is because of the lazy help that wants to go home early. Maybe the owners need to step up to the plate and explain why this is not acceptable. Just because it is not busy, you don't penalize those who may show up at last minute.

They have started giving half portions for the same price.

This place has declined in quality and cleanliness.

My wife and I walked in at 6pm and there were three young boys handling things. They were out of brown rice, any sautéed vegetables, and guacamole . All the young man could say was he was sorry. No one was cooking any vegetables, making brown rice or making guacamole. A-lot of standing around and no one in charge. This was a joke and the owner needs to pay attention to things. Won’t be back for some time and we live in Spearfish.

Good food and big portions, great choices available to add to your bowl.

I was traveling on St. Patrick's Day and wanted to stop in here. So I checked the Internet to see if the were still open to grab a wholesome meal of cabbage and corn beef before grabbing a few hours of rest and getting back on the road. The Internet stated the closed at 9 pm. It was 8:25pm. I was pulling a uhaul trailer so I had to get where I could turn around. We pulled in and ran to the door to place our order and the doors were locked. It totally upset me because the staff was standing in eye shot but refused to make eye contact. I checked their sign and it also read Closes at 9 so why was it 8:30 pm and they were not honoring Their own decision to be open til 9pm. I think the thing that upsets me the most is the staff new they were wrong which is why they would not make eye contact. I have done restaurant management and in the event we have to close outside of our regular hours there is signage posted as to why. If a customer came before we are able to post we explain the situation to them. This was poor service from my point of view. I've never eaten there and this behavior made me not ever want to.

Unfortunately, I’ve reduced frequency of my visits because the food and service just aren’t what they used to be. Tonight for example (at 6pm) they were out of white rice, brown rice, barbacoa beef, steak, and feta cheese. I don’t know how you run out of rice at a burrito shop. It might be because most of the staff is under 18. Then, often the wrap of the burrito is loose, making a drippy mess. I’m also confused about the drive thru and I wish there was better signage or consistency of it being open. When it’s good, it’s good…but I just haven’t had that experience in a while.

Freddie made me the best steak taco I have had there yet!!! I absolutely love this place but tonight was amazing!! He absolutely nailed all of the portions on everything!! Normally you go somewhere to eat and it’s too much this and not enough of that but he absolutely nailed my taco tonight!! So good!! Well done Freddie!!!👊👊🙌🙌

Show up at 7:40 pm. One staff member informed us they were closing at 8 when their hrs say 9. Told him we were taking to go, so he would help us. Extremely pushy. Other staff member so stoned he couldn't remember what you said 2 seconds prior. Got pushed put the door asap.

What's the point of ordering on the phone a half an hour early if they aren't going to make your food til you get there?

Barbacoa’s is the best burrito place around. The ingredients are fresh and flavorful and the sauces are unique. The “Chuck” sauce is my favorite hot sauce(get it on the side so you can get the full flavor of it)! The owner Nick is great at coming up with a wide variety on his menus and whenever I am going out to eat in Spearfish I go back and forth between Barbacoas and Killians.

i asked for salsa verde and she (the employee) gave me pico de gallo 😭😭 now, i didn't say anything, because im a coward and frankly it wasn't worth my time, but if im paying $15 for a burrito, it would be nice to get what i ask for...

Chipotle WHO? Real chill vibes, excellent food with A TON of offbeat options, fast and friendly service, and some whimsical artwork in the bathrooms (check it out). I’d eat here… often, if I lived in town.

Food was absolutely delicious and a lot of food for a reasonable price. Would definitely go back again.

Second time trying this place and not a fan. Chicken was tough, BBQ sauce was horrible, and very expensive.

Recommended by the locals - this place has fabulous flavors and options!! I missed the breakfast bowl but heard #3 was a favorite. I had the Barbacoa bowl with their signature seasoned shredded beef over rice with black beans, salsas, guacamole and chipotle sauce…I was planning to save half for later but ended up eating the whole bowl, it was SO GOOD!

So I’m originally from Colorado and moved here for college. I was excited to eat here because my Colorado friends have all told me me that it was a decent enough place to eat. I’m all ok on cold food because I can easily take it home and reheat it but that’s if it wasn’t for the service. So maybe I came in at the wrong time or a bad time, but the person making my burrito (long blonde hair gal) first didn’t acknowledge me, and then when she did looked put out with me and while making burrito she seemed kinda rushed when there was no one behind me. But the real kicker is after I paid and sat down to eat all I could hear was the my server talking bad about me to her coworkers in the back. That in itself made my food feel sour. (Also I’ve worked in the customer service industry, and can say I under stand looking done with life and being rushed… I don’t understand how you can talk bad customers while they are in the same building as you)

Service was poor, person at counter didn't listen to my wife when she ordered. Fish tacos(2) were stone cold and poorly put together. Will not be returning to this place.

Great food. If you're not a hungry one, there's enough for lunch the next day

The service was really fast and the employees were nice. Now the issue I have is the portions are tiny. If I am paying $12 for a burrito ($15 after tax) it needs to have more than a tiny scoop of everything. The scoop of rice and beans weren't even a spponful. The burrito after being completely wrapped up was very small. The meat was good for the 6 pieces of steak that was on it.

Delicious! The burrito's are fresh and delicious. The barbacoa was juicy and wonderful. If you are in Spearfish and are looking for a quick and quality lunch or dinner this is a very good option.

Road-tripping and stopped in here, honestly was the best food we’ve had from any restaurant in a week. I am extremely picky when it comes to tacos and burritos and this place was SO good. I got the #4, it was delicious and actually super spicy. My husband got the breakfast burrito with added chuck norris sauce and he was also happy with his. These boys in here were super friendly, and they even happily remade my husbands burritos because he didn’t want potatoes in it. Definitely stop in here, it’s super good. You won’t be sad!

Great hometown "Chipotle" style restaurant. Great in-house made burritos and bowls.

We ate here three times this week. This business is far from being a Chipotle alternative. The air conditioning wasn't working all three times we were there. The food is mediocre and they're very skimpy on the meat that they put in to your bowl. The female staff there aren't very friendly.

Awesome food and very friendly staff! Only complaint I have is it was HOT in there. I was sweating just sitting there eating. I almost went to finish my food in my air conditioned car. I can’t imagine how the staff can stand to be working in there all day. Had to have been over 80 degrees in there.

This place has burritos and wraps (not hip-hop, but sandwiches, yo). My lunch was quick, made to order, and delicious. The only complaint-- and this is truly a "first world problem"-- is that they serve too much food. Seriously, my burrito was so large I had to rest it on the table to eat it. Burritosaurus Rex, in the house. Live and direct, at Barbacoa's in Spearfish. Worth the trip.

Please for the love of tired/hungry moms with kids in the car, open your drive thru. It’s the only yummy place in town with a drive thru but it’s always closed. The convenience is a really lovely option when you don’t want to unload multiple kids just to grab a quick bite to eat.

Customer service was great. +The lady who made my steak burrito was nice and friendly. +The restaurant has a cool and clean atmosphere. -The food, however, needs some work. It wasn’t terrible, just lacked any sort of flavor. I had a steak burrito packed full of fresh ingredients and added their queso as well. It did taste fresh, but overall it was just bland and underwhelming. Maybe it was just the steak? It was definitely not flame grilled, and lacked any sort of seasoning. Come on baby, give me some FLAAAVOR! I will give this place another chance eventually, but I will not be getting the steak again.

This place is NOT good for celiacs. There is cross contamination in every container and staff had no idea what was gluten free or how to go about avoiding gluten contamination. The family said the food was good and be careful of the Chuck sauce … super spicy!!

One of my favorite places to eat in town for years. The last few times I have been they were pretty much out of everything. Chicken was burnt and dried up to almost jerky, rice was hard and clumpy with while stems of cilantro in it. Beans were all over cooked and split. No fajita veg....havent been able to get fajita veg for MONTHS, no lettuce , no sour cream, no green Chilli, no honey habenero sauce. I used to eat here multiple tims a week but it has gotten to a point of no return for me. I like eating local but now I will unfortunately be forced to go to Qudoba. Really really wish they can get it together and get it back to what it used to be 😭

Great service and great people working. The food seems very very salty compared to when we have stopped in the past. Not sure what happened but all 8 of us were surprised at how over salty the food was. Other than that, it was great!

Used to come here regularly. Was here at dinner this evening and they were out of several items (chips, black beans, lettuce, etc.). Food was cold, chicken was dry and overdone, prices have went up. Minimal meat in your burrito, mostly beans. Skip it and go to Guadalajaras. Very dissatisfied and sad as it is now off our list.

They have a line style ordering process where you get to pick your toppings. The food was amazing! Everyone in the family was a big fan. My boys can eat, and they loved the burrito portions. 💚They do veggie options!!💚

Similar to Chipotle or Qdoba, but much healthier and locally owned and operated. The blacked salmon burrito is amazing! The "Chuck Norris" sauce has the right amount of kick for those who like it extra spicy!

Breakfast burritos were good a while back, but went for lunch today and this chicken in the burrito is so dry and tastes like a rotisserie chicken. Everything is pretty bland and definitely does not do Mexican food justice...

Barbacoa's, It Was My First Time And Omg Excellent Burrito 🌯 & Great Customer Service, I Will Be Back!

Establishment was clean and looked nice upon entry. One out of the two female servers didn't seem very friendly. Never got a proper greeting just got stared at and felt VERY uncomfortable by her. The food is good if you don't like heavy seasonings..it very much lacked any flavor, felt like I wasted my time and money.

This is the third time since May 2022 that I’ve visited the restaurant to prove myself wrong. My son loves the food here… as for me the food is okay. In any case, the service has always been undesirable. Every time I’ve gone there, the staff has changed. And I’m always getting my order taken by inexperienced young people — that get very frustrated — and reflect their frustration on their faces and mannerisms. This time the girl that took my order looked at me with disdain when I repeated what I wanted on my burrito since she was not adding the ingredient. She looked like she didn’t want to be there. Or didn’t want to take my order. Whichever it was, I will not be going there again. Three strikes (too many) and you are out.

Our favorite place to grab a quick and filling lunch when we're in Spearfish. Hit the trails or local sites in the morning to work up a hunger, and hit Barbacoa's to fix it. Miss when they used to be the post-race food for Dakota Five -O

Terrible food and even worse customer service. ordered fish tacos they microwaved my fish and everything else was ice cold. therefore my fish was cold. asked to exchange the meal and said i had to pay for another meal.

Flavor 10/10 Service 10/10 My only feedback is everytime I get the tacos the tortilla immediately falls apart. Takeout I understand it getting soggy but even when I dine in, I can't even pick up the taco without it falling apart. Flour and corn.

Food was okay. However 8 of us met at 6 pm and it was hot in there. Huge windows have no blinds, direct sun pouring in , no ceiling fans and no air conditioning. We meet frequently trying out restaurants and won't come here in the summer. It was a sweat box, not a great experience.

first time there. they serve up Mexican wraps and bowl foods from what we could tell. The portions was good size & we had to take half back to the hotel to finish off later & the food was good. You passed in front of a counter where u could pic & chose your topping ( much like Subway ). The guy who waited on us was very friendly & suggested things to check out in the town. If we where in town again we would go back.

Girl checking us out had a horrible attitude! Brown hair with pony tail, wearing orange pants and grey shirt. Think her name was Alexis. Was short and rude with my husband and even walked away from him mid sentence (running to the back slamming stuff around because she was annoyed apparently) because she didn’t want to deal with him asking if they had non chilled coke. Was short and cut him off as well. Then proceeded to talk about my husband to the boys making the burritos while we ate and listened in the corner. We will not be coming back as I do not appreciate customer service that’s less than that of a gas station attendant. Pretty sad since it was our favorite place to eat when we travel 1600 miles to see family. Someone needs to tell that girl that it’s the customers that allow her to have a paycheck.

I’ve eaten here a few times as they offer nice veggie options. I was asked if I wanted special side vegetables which sounded good. I was charged extra for it. It wasn’t much but I didn’t like the dishonesty. Tell me in the moment about the charge so I can make an informed decision. The nachos are always good.

it is truly a locals spot, but I’ve always appreciated the consistency. Every single time I go to eat there it is delicious. All of the ingredients are so fresh, and I can’t say enough about Ben and the rest of the staff. They’re absolutely great. Customer Service is I’ll make it or break it thing for me when it comes to supporting local businesses. I only have so much money to spread around, and if I’m gonna spend it I don’t want to feel like I’m a nuisance.
