We had an amazing 3 course dinner! The lobster ravioli appetizer was to die for- so many unique, delicious flavors! The duck as my main course was possibly one of the best duck dishes I have had. And definitely order the soufflé for dessert!! It was so good. Would definitely recommend and would definitely eat there again!

Lovely restaurant--we enjoyed a quiet evening with wonderful food. Sophisticated decor. Bread was fresh baked. Martini was perfect. We had the mushroom vol au vent and beef. Both were delicious. Our server, Lisa, was great. It's so difficult to find a restaurant where you can actually carry on a conversation. This was much appreciated.

We had given up on the old Bouchard but decided to try again with the supposedly updated Chantarelle. Not enough updating. Furniture and general ambience a bit lighter, menu and prices pretty much the same. Almond sauces added to some items meant I was limited in what I could order. The cocktails - Manhattan from the menu and margarita - were outstanding. Salad was good, foie gras meh. Scallops were not exciting but the duck was very good. Don't bother with dessert unless there is a special. Service overall was ok.

This was a very disappointing experience. We went to celebrate our 20th anniversary and expected something very special based on Bouchard’s prior history and reputation, as well as what was described in their website. However, the service was rushed, inconsistent, and not at all at the level of expected professionalism for a fine dining establishment. The food was …adequate. Nothing special and definitely not worth the money. Overall, this was more than a letdown. We will not be returning.

This was our latest of many visits to Chanterelle, and its predecessor. Although I literally made the reservation within the first three hours of the day’s availability, our request to sit with a specific Captain was not honored, although we observed that other’s similar requests were. When an excellent soufflé was brought to the table with a burning candle inserted, to celebrate my birthday, the candle blew out. The server struck a butane lighter numerous times, directly in front of my face, in his effort to relight the candle. The appetizers and soufflé were as good as ever. However the Dover sole was served in an insipid “almond sauce,” rather than the classic burre blanc, which left the delicate fish, all but flavorless.

Great, French cuisine as expected. It’s all a bit on the lighter side which I appreciate. The Caesar Salad was probably the best I’ve ever had, but the rest was impressive as well. Daniel was the most attentive and caring waiter you can imagine. Excellent choice of restaurant for a special occasion. Or for every day if you can swing it.

Lovely dinner with excellent wine pairings and attentive, knowledgeable service. This restaurant feels more like dining in a beautiful, creatively decorated house than in a faceless restaurant. I had the foie gras terrine appetizer and duck breast entree, both were delicious. Highly recommended!

I chose Chanterelle to celebrate my wife's birthday. It was a great choice. The food was outstanding as was the service. Our server, Lisa, was very personable and attentive. Wonderful, old-school ambience in the dining room. My wife had Dover Sole which was excellent as was my beef tenderloin. The restaurant treated us with champagne to celebrate my wife's birthday. I highly recommend Chanterelle for a special occasion.

We have been going to Newport to work or play for 20 years. Chanterelle is no longer 5 star. It's still very good, just not 5 star. Mostly the quality of the food has dropped slightly. Also, this year and last there have been flies which can be very off putting. 30 minutes before you open, send someone round with a swatter.

Our favorite restaurant in Newport for special occasions. The appetizers, escargot and Caesar salad were delicious. I would have preferred a different sauce with the lobster rather than the carrot infused sauce, say, lobster bisque. The dory sole could have used more assertive seasoning. That being said, a thoroughly enjoyable evening thanks in large part to Dan.

Lovely inn right on Thames st in downtown Newport Our room was nice - large with a comfy bed, table and chairs, mini fridge and coffee maker. Fridge is stocked daily with water and OJ. Daily breakfast is provided daily - left at the door. We had fresh chocolate and apple pastries during our stay. There’s ample parking for guests in the back One complaint is the noisy neighbors. They can’t control that but did provide ear plugs and noise machines. Loved it and would stay here again

This was the first (and only) time in many years that I was not blown away by this restaurant. First, after receiving a call the day before my reservation (Sat. 515PM) to confirm my reservation, remind me of their dress code, and of their off-street parking but I needed to stop for a parking pass. When I arrived to pick up my pass I was told I couldn't park in the reserved lot until 6PM because there was an event going on. (We had just parked there as the wedding ceremony was letting out.) Funny, no one had mentioned this the day before when confirming my 515PM reservation and reminding me of their parking availability. Now, at 5PM on a 90 degree Sat. evening in Newport I had to walk back UP the hill to move our car AND find another parking spot ($20 later!). As I received this news I was also reminded bluntly of the "no sneakers" policy. Luckily I was wearing sneakers for my unexpected walking! (I had other shoes in the car.) When my party final assembled we were carefully (uncomfortably) scrutinized to make sure we adhered to "dress code". Luckily we did! The menu has changed as there is now a new chef. Not an improvement. The food, although good, was prepared with a heavy hand. The delicate spices and flavoring of old are no more. Being their first time, my guests were happily impressed with their meals. Unfortunately, my expectations had been set higher. I will no longer go out of my way to visit again.

Our all time favorite- esp special occasions. We both had the incredible tenderloin- unusual for me- I usually go for the lobster. Most unusual presentation of the Caesar salad which was plenty for us to split. If I have one constructive comment,we’re local and I’d prefer a weeknight.

Chanterelle initially couldn’t live up to Bouchard’s, but now it’s found its identity and stride. Our filet with bordelaise was excellent. We started with escargot which was very good. The soufflé for dessert was fantastic. Our servers were attentive, knowledgeable and professional. My only disappointment was being sat near the serving station which can be busy and lots of traffic. As always a pleasure to speak with and greet the best captain in the business, Dan. A lovely evening and highly recommend.

Lovely restaurant and food was very good. My only two comment are is the reataurant asksd if this is for a special occasion, which it was and which I stated. When they called to confirm reservation they mentioned the special occasion again. However, when we were at the restaurant, they never acknowledged the occasion which was a small disappointment. My second comment is I wish the restaurant carries some Non Alcoholic wines, which similar upscale restaurants in NY and Boston do. Thanks.

Justifiably considered one of the best restaurants in Newport. Not only was the food very good (all menu choices alike, and we ate across the board), but the staff was more than accommodating (e.g. called me after I made the reservation online to ensure there were no food allergies and see if there was a special occasion) and even made it fun. Our maître de Daniel was likely an especially charismatic case, but he certainly helped to make this one of the most memorable dining experiences ever. Oh, and as we came from New York City, this restaurant was downright economical for a fine dining establishment. Highly recommend.

This restaurant was a culinary delight! I tasted escargot for the first time, it was divine!! The Caesar salad was a unique dish and worth having! They had wine choices by the glass, half bottle and full bottle with choices that will tempt your palette. You couldn’t choose wrong for entrees as selection covered all food groups and were prepared perfectly !!! The soufflé is a must!

This was our second visit to Chanterelle- the first was fabulous(last summer); last night was disappointing. The service was excellent and accommodating but the food- both menu choices and quality/flavor -was far inferior to our last visit. Nothing exceptional in the fish entree- accompanied by one tiny potato sliced in 4 pieces and a flavorless almondine sauce. The duck breast also lacked flavored was not particularly tender. The Gran Marnier soufle was delicious. Food was slow coming out of the kitchen but the service was commendable.

This has always been my favorite restaurant in Newport, particularly for special occasions. I enjoy the quiet ambiance and the gracious service and have always felt that the meal was worth the price. However, on our most recent visit, the entrees came with no vegetables (now priced separately), the duck was severely undercooked and had to be sent back, and the sole was tasteless. The service was still welcoming but the meal was far from its usual standard and quite disappointing.

Eating here was a wonderful experience. Lisa G was our server and she was so friendly and helpful with her suggestions. Unfortunately, it is not on the water so we were given a window seat, which I so appreciated, but the view was not great. But the inside is classy. My husband had the mushroom app which he loved. I had caesar salad presented in a way I have never seen before and I loved it. He had the beef which he devoured and I adored the halibut. But the star of the evening is the Grand Marnier Souffle - do not miss it!!! It was our 52nd anniversary and they surprised us with champagne, which was unexpected and so nice. This is a must for any special occasion and we will be back.

As always Dan our waiter was fantastic!!! We have eaten st the restaurant many times we like the new menu, however the duck was a bit tough and it was cut in large chunks not filleted or faned out. It was supposed to have orange sauce there were none to be found unlike the last time i ordered itAlso there used to be a lovely side of vegetables on the plate now there is none and the only side to order for additional price is spinach or mashed potatoes. So its a lovely spot but needs a little attention to some little things like consistency!

Great place for that special occasion. They had their own parking lot about 3/4 of a block up the street that made summer Newport parking a snap. Able to easily have a conversation without people around you not able to listen in. Our appetizers (steak tartar & mushroom puffed pastry) were beautiful and tasty. We shared ours so we could both enjoy the differences. Both of our meals were cooked to perfection and delicious (fresh lobster brought in that morning and filet mignon that you could cut with a fork). The wine list and maître d's recommendation (Haut Segottes) were a perfect match for our meals. While we went for a whole bottle, I appreciated that they also had many 1/2 bottle options. They even provided a surprise complimentary birthday glass of champagne for both of us at dessert. What a nice touch to the evening.

We ate here in September 2023 and it was so memorable that, on this summer's vacation, we went 4 hours out of our way to eat there again. We'd noticed that many diners were suddenly giving the place 2 and 3 star reviews but we just assumed those people were pretentious foodies who' complain about anything. Boy, were we wrong! Chanterelle is a shell of its former self. We were seated in a bad table, in the hallway, next to the kitchen. My wife had the lobster which was so tough it was inedible. I had the halibut which was literally the most tasteless, flavorless food I've ever put in my mouth. And, to add insult to injury, we'd pre-ordered the souffle to avoid a 30-minute wait but the server obviously forgot to put in that order; we left without dessert after waiting 25 minutes. So... Now, after the second visit, we'd not eat there again if we lived next door and the meal was free. A horribly disappointing experience.

We have been going to Bouchard a couple of times each year for almost 20 years and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Since it has changed to chanterelle, it does not measure up in the least. We had tried it once last year and werenot that pleased. We thought we would try it again and were still disappointed. The menu is very limited and the quality of the food has deteriorated compared to when it was Bouchard. Will probably not return.

I dined at Chanterelle 2 nights in a row. The first as a guest and the second as a host. I was disappointed that none of the old Bouchard items were on the menu. The only salad was a beet pasta w/ frisee. So I did not have a first course the first night. The second night I had the foie gras which was good. The first night I had the Fluke as did my hosts. They are all of theirs but I didn't care for the sauce so left half of mine. I miss Albert's touch w/ sauces. The second night I skipped the Dover Sole special b/c it was being served w/ the same sauce as the Fluke. In past years it was severed w/ a sorrel cream sauce. So I had the cod/halibut. It was tasteless and served on a bed of spring peas which were ok. My guest had the same entree and ate all of his. Had grand marnier souffle both nights which was wonderful as usual. The server forgot to bring the glass of wine my friend ordered w/ his fish. He had to ask and it came when he was almost finished. It was my friend's birthday and they did bring us complimentary glasses of sparkling wine w/ the soufle. Bottom line: For anyone who had not been to the old Bouchard when Albert was in the kitchen, Chanterelle would likely be a better experience. I won't be back soon.

Our waitress, Lisa, was very nice and personable. The food was very disappointing. My husband's octopus was tough and chewy. His chicken was nothing special (especially for a French restaurant). I had the escargot which needed more garlic. My halibut was nicely prepared. The desserts were good but the coffee was weak and luke warm. The restaurant is under new ownership and we wanted to like it. Unfortunately, it was not worth the $200 that we paid. I miss the old menu selections and the impeccable presentation and flavors of the original restaurant.

We were on vacation, celebrating a birthday and wanted something a little special. Chanterelle delivered from the moment we stepped inside the door until it was time to go. Probably the best "fine" dining we have had in the USA. My husband had the Halibut and I had the Fluke. Both were perfectly cooked, well presented and tasted really good. My husband had the chocolate dessert, which he said was wonderful. The only disappointment was the size of my sorbet dessert for the same cost as his.

We had very good food and service to a point, then it appeared that our server decided to not take care of our table anymore. We were celebrating a special occasion. I asked the server if he would take a picture of us. He said he did not do that, but he would send someone over. Noone was sent over. The busboy took our desert order and served it. He also took the picture because I asked. The server was sure to bring our check after a long wait.

I make Chanterelle my go to place for a great celebratory meal with friends. The food is always excellent and the service is impeccable.

One of the best restaurants in the area. I gave a small ding on ambiance since the back room is kinda loud and stuffy. With one vegetarian in the party, we were, at first, disappointed when the menu had Zero vegetarian options for a main course. But the chef knew we were coming, and prepared pea and gnocchi dish that was outstanding. I do wish that had been on the menu, and maybe with another option or two. Even in this day and age, this problem is very common in high end restaurants here in the northeast. I think they should be embarrassed.

We spent our 10th anniversary dinner here. It was beautiful and they made it feel special. The service was friendly and attentive, and we loved discussing the details of the menu and receiving recommendations. I thought the halibut was excellent, and my husband enjoyed the duck à l’orange. I liked the escargot, but would try something else next time. The grand marnier souffle was dreamy! We would love to come back sometime, and highly recommend!

This restaurant is under the radar from the crowds of Newport-but lovely. My friends and I had a fabulous time and the staff is as good as it gets. If you want professional wait service, and amazing g food, check them out. The food selection was a touch better under previous ownership.

Our Captain Max was a fantastic host. He warmly greeted us and expertly guided us through the food, wine, and dessert selection. Following his recommendations made our experience truly delightful. Despite trying five top-rated restaurants during our short stay in New Port, Chanterelle stood out above the rest with their mouthwatering dishes and delectable desserts. We enjoyed spending time at Chanterelle. A few things to work on... wait staff should cover tatoos and instead of asking Are you stillworking on it?" Ask "How are you enjoying your meal? or "Are you still enjoying?" Candlelight woul be nice! We were happy to be served champagne! Thank you!

I do not often leave negative reviews, but I think that other would benefit from this review. I deleted the original review and updated this for additional clarity. The hotel is rated as a 4 star hotel on Google. This is clearly incorrect, and we would rate it more like a motel or 2 star converted bed and breakfast. Our first room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. The Bath faucet dripped constantly. There were stains on bed sheets. There were water stains on the ceiling from water damage. There was front desk support after 10pm or responses to email. No personal items like conditioner. The Wi-Fi did not work. No porters for luggage, and the parking out back was limited and very public. The location was extremely loud due to a lively pub next door. They provided industrial earplugs for sleeping. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a romantic getaway (ex/ like you wedding anniversary). We did talk with one person at the front desk and were moved to another room the second night, but the overall poor experience and very high expense do not align. Again, I do not leave reviews, but this experience was comically over the top negative considering the out of pocket expense, and I want others to moderate expectations and plan their travels accordingly.

You should not change what wasn’t broken. The quality of the food was sub par for the expense! We were charged $3 more for our drinks because we asked to have them “up” with rocks on the side. The menu was not as good as it has been over the years. The Dover Sole I had was tough and was not worth $63. We have been coming to this restaurant for 20 years and this is the first time we were not satisfied. Bring Bouchard’s back!

Food was delicious, especially the lobster raviolo and mushroom vol au vent starters. As were the fluke and chicken entrees. The Grand Marnier soufflé was light and airy. Max was very welcoming and attentive. A must when in Newport.

Another wonderful experience at Chanterelle! Thoroughly enjoyed several new menu items, most notably the octopus aperitif and the lobster and halibut entrees. The perfectly cooked octopus accompanied by serrano ham and chilled, marinated tomatoes created an amazing combination of flavors in every bite! The poached halibut was everything one would want - delicate, moist and sweet - and paired with a fresh and bright combination of ramp, snap peas, and snow peas - another terrific combination of flavors and textures. The lobster - whole served out of the shell - was sauteed and with a sauce that had wonderfully subtle Asian notes that appeared as one savored each bite. Each dish is a truly outstanding addition to the menu. Of course a highlight of any visit to Chanterelle is the truly warm hospitality and amazing service of Carmen (GM & Host), Dan (Captain) and Ben (Server). It would not be uncommon for an establishment at Chanterelle's level to feel a bit stuffy, but that's never the case for this team. They always make everyone feel relaxed and welcome with just the right level of personal engagement and attention - a "secret sauce" so to speak.
