NEW and UPDATED review on June 22nd, 2024, we took one of our regular day trips to Port Townsend. We purchased some items from the farmers market there, went to Willabee Farms, and decided to have lunch at Port Townsend's little tea room, Cafe Tenby. Our experiences at Cafe Tenby have always been delightful. The food quality is consistently good, and their plain scones are a true delight. However, the pricing was a bit unexpected. For two sandwiches, which were smaller in size, along with two scones (included with about a tablespoon of jam and clotted cream) and we drank water, it was $44.00. The shock came when we realized they now charge for the clotted cream and the jam, making the price seem even more disproportionate to the portion size. As much as I love their plain scones, it is hard to justify that amount of money. Although cute but relatively plain, Cafe Tenby states it is a "modern" tea house. Either way, it has seen better days. While I've always been able to overlook some of Cafe Tenby's shortcomings, such as cleanliness and table availability, it's hard to ignore that it doesn't quite capture the essence of a traditional tea house, at least not the ones I'm familiar with. Even those who claim to be a little more modern than old-fashioned tea houses or tea rooms. Cafe Tenby, in my opinion, falls just a little short. The window area was a little dirty. Under our table, there were crumbs and dust. Also, every time we go there to eat, most tables are reserved; although they say you don't have to have reservations, there is rarely any place to choose from to sit. My point is, if customers are paying the price we did for smaller sandwiches, then the establishment should consider some updates or at the very least, a thorough cleaning. Next time we visit Cafe Tenby, it will be just for their scones! "HAPPY SUMMER TO EVERYONE" And, Please remember, be kind to ALL living things 🌲🌲

As soon as I read their tea menu, I could see they had good taste. I changed my family’s morning plans to go there and we were rewarded greatly. The pistachio lemon cake is one of the best things I’ve tried. Their banana cake was moist and flavorful. Every sandwich we got was made with a different kind of homemade bread and wowed us. We ended up getting more things to take home and try later. But probably the best part was that they made me a decaf london fog, something I can rarely get. Very few places cater to people (like nursing moms) who don’t want to have caffeine but still want to enjoy a delicious drink in the morning.

Lovely, cozy Tea House with an amazing selection of teas. Sit down with a pot of tea and a scrumptious baked good, or go the Full Monty with their High Tea. (Reservations needed for the High Tea). They also serve yummy sandwiches and soups for lunch. Great outdoor space for nice weather, or the cozy fireplace inside. I love their tuna salad sandwich - fresh baked bread, high-quality tuna, and lovely salted cucumbers. Perfect lunch, with a buckwheat chocolate chip cookie and a pot of tea!

Excellent food - best salad today and bread was fabulous too. My husband loved the turkey sandwich and the many cookies and sweets are always yummy. And we took home chicken pot pies for dinner. They are amazing!! It’s the best place for lunch. And you can reserve a high tea - really a good way to celebrate I could go on but you get the idea - Tenby’s is excellent. Try it.

A local recommended this place when we asked about where to grab breakfast before our whale watching tour. Cafe Tenby is a cute cafe with lovely staff and delicious food. We enjoyed our breakfast with tea... he was getting a sore throat, so they recommended a ginger turmeric tea that he envied so much that we bought a bag to bring home. We also grabbed sandwiches for our tour.

Very, very disappointed 🙁. I had company visiting from Texas. I made reservations for High Tea, which Cafe Tenby schedules for Saturdays. I received a confirmation for my reservation a few days before the appointed Saturday, asking that if we cannot make it, to give them notice. We drove 40 minutes to arrive for our High Tea and the place was closed! Cafe Tenby did not even have the courtesy to send me an email advising that our reservation was cancelled. So rude! Followup: Cafe Tenby contacted me and said they sent me a cancellation notice 3 days before. I have gone through my deleted mail, not read mail, and junk mail and did not find that email. I am not saying I was not notified--I just do not find it. However, in all fairness to Cafe Tenby, High Tea is by reservation and I am confident I was not the only reservation that day. That being said, when I arrived at the cafe, there were no lines of people waiting to be seated; which leads me to conclude Cafe Tenby did send out cancellation notices.

Cafe Tenby is the new cafe in the space that was formerly Pippa's Real Tea. Besides a wide-ranging selection of tea, the husband-and-wife team have brought a focus on artisan baked goods and an excellent high tea. I have tried only their scones and poppy seed cake, and both are excellent. The cafe's modern, Scandinavian space is a bright counterpoint to Port Townsend's charming Victorian themed atmosphere. The cafe is adorned by the color-rich, Impressionist-style paintings of local artist Marie Amerson, who you can find on Facebook. There is plenty of seating, as the cafe extends towards the back, and there is outdoor seating in a garden when the weather is pleasant. The high tea is more expensive than some, but the quality of everything is high. A generous salad acts as a palate cleanser between the traditional finger sandwiches and the sweet offerings. The clotted cream and lemon curd are both house-made, and the best of their kind I have sampled. Clotted cream (reduced cream) creates a silkier and richer mouthfeel than butter with jam on the scones, and is the way scones are served in England. You can order any of the teas they have on the shelves, not just the ones listed in the card they hand you, and they can provide guidance. They also serve sandwiches on housemade bread (the sourdough was very good) for brunch or lunch. Highly recommended as part of your visit to Port Townsend, and perhaps a destination cafe for those living in the region...

Had a fabulous high tea in Port Townsend @ Cafe Tenby. Have had high tea at The Empess in BC, many locations in London and in Australia and Cafe Tenby stepped into the fray and knocked it out of the park. The Welsh Cakes from owner Andrew’s Welsh heritage served w creamy lemon curd were unique and so moist. The scones were buttery and delicate and melted in my mouth. There was no way I could make it thru the selection of sweets. The variety of teas are extensive. If you can’t find a tea to your taste you are not a tea drinker! (They also serve coffee.)The Covid precautions were in place and followed and we felt very safe. No need to travel so far afield for a good High Tea. We will be back!

A visit to the Victorian town of Port Townsend seemed ideally complemented by indulging in high tea. I was delighted to receive a reply to my email from Pippa herself confirming my reservation. The staff was warm and welcoming. I had preselected the Royal Tea which included a variety of sandwiches, scones with jam and homemade clotted cream, fresh berries, mini desserts, a choice of tea, and a glass of bubbly (I was on vacation, after all.) Pippa jokingly insisted that I clean my three-tiered plate, and proudly noted that the clotted cream takes two days to make. One of the helpful servers offered advice on tea selection; I enjoyed mine tremendously. I did manage to put away the sandwiches, scones and, yes, all of the clotted cream, but I had to take the desserts to go. Pippa confessed that the only person who ever finished the entire portion was a 12-year-old girl. A charming find!

When you enter Pippa's, the first thing you notice is a wall of shelves stocked with all kinds of teas imaginable, some familiar, some exotic and rare. It reminded me of a curry shop in Greenwich Village whose extravagant offerings went from wall to wall. It was like being in curry heaven. That's the same feeling you get at Pippa's. Their prices are fairly reasonable, too. Another thing striking about Pippa's is how big it is inside. From outside, it seems small. I belong to the poetry group that meets there every third Friday of the month for one hour. The back space, complete with sofas, easily accommodates 15/20 people. Compared to the various coffee shops in town, Pippa's is several decibels lower. So, if relative quietude is your thing, this is the place.
