I’ve lived here in Puerto Rico for several years. Carli’s is one of the coolest places for dinner in town. It’s not quite a local’s only place, but it is a hidden gem in Old San Juan. The food is excellent, the service is perfect, the bartenders are fun and very happy to chat, and of course, Carli plays the piano most nights around 8pm. Other jazz musicians also play inside and outside on the patio. They have a new VIP booth area near Carli’s baby grand, which is very cool. But William’s mojitos at the bar are my favorite.

UPDATE - Carli if you would like to take accountability for how your employees made people feel, I welcome your apology. Elsewise, how you treat other people doesn't justify how we felt we were treated. For example, even how you respond to different reviews is bias. Take a look for yourself to see where your or your teams' biases lie. A business cannot tell a customer how they fell they are treated. We were properly dressed (as any normal person going to a restaurant) and actually did not patronize the restaurant because of the curtness of the staff. Everyone knows the feeling of niceness over kindness. I have never felt this way anywhere and only found it right to share my experience with others. We all choose were we spend our money - sharing so that others have a well rounded representation of how they may be treated during their visit. For example - when you're talking to potential customers who you assume don't speak your language and talk down about them to others, one can only assume the intention. All business isn't good business and all businesses aren't good. Works both ways. DO NOT PATRONIZE / especially if American. Most of Puerto Rico is very accommodating. These owners were the rudest I’ve ever experienced traveling abroad. Very much so gives me racist against any brown person.

Went on a Rum Runners tour in Puerto Rico, and they had the best mojito I have ever had. Carefully crafted, fresh, smooth and the place itself is full of history.

Would rated better if they didn’t charge me for the dessert the waiter picked to sing me happy birthday, very disappointed I don’t mind paying but a least let me choose what I want . and the shrimp linguine was very salty.

William was very friendly, excellent service.

Food was average. Had the grouper, couldn’t finish it because it was too salty along with the mashed potatoes. Asparagus was cooked to perfection. Then they gave me a spinach salad. The taste was decent but I hate salads that have dry leaves. It should at least be tossed in light oil prior to preparation. The live music was nice. Servers nice. Mojito was good but it said crushed ice on the menu and was looking forward to it. I hate listening to myself wine, but it is what it is.

Fantastic ambiance. Great Jazz piano and upright bass accompanying. We just stumbled upon this gem. I woukd highly recommend it.

Good place to have a drink, exquisite food

Great place, but somewhat pricy. We had a very simple dish and red wine to keep expenses down.

This feels like a place that should be featured on Bar Rescue. We went mainly for the live jazz but the service was so terrible and we were crammed in a corner table where I was basically hovering off the bench. The service was horrendous. Took 7 minutes to just get a menu, barely got any water, and we decided to just get a cocktail. The pina colada was good but I've had better at the kiosks on the beach. We weren't even graced with a refill on said water. Didn't get to experience any of the live jazz but got to experience some live guitar. Also witnessed the horrible service this family had to endure. Poor guy ordered a medalla and got 50% foam and a mess hand delivered. Plenty of restaurants in old san juan, just walk around and point for better service. Reply to owner: We did have reservation and the restaurant only had about 9 people inside.

I dont leave reviews often, but this place really is an experience. Carli toured with the Beach Boys and tonnes of other artists. We entered to him playing beautiful music on the piano and then sat down and chatted with him over a cocktail. People were up dancing and the whole atmosphere was so beautiful. Food and service is excellent as well. But the magical thing about this place is the local and family atmosphere, where new and old friends can meet and chat over top knotch cocktails whilst listening to great music by a legendary pianist.

Our food was good, my risotto little too salty and my husband’s rack of lamb definitely not medium rare, but very good. His wine was delicious and mine was ok. Decent price and very good entertainment.

The best meal I had in Puerto Rico. Escargot was just perfection. Fresh made pasta(lobster ravioli and spinach ravioli) were some of the best we’d had anywhere. Plus Carli makes it an experience to remember

Stopped in for some drinks, sat at the bar and had great mixed drinks designed from the award winning head bartender. They were delicious and strong enough for anyone! Nice atmosphere. Owner was playing the piano, so that added to the ambience. Would definitely return!

The service could have been better!!! It began by the waiter pouring a full bottle of wine into 2 glasses prior to appetizers being served By the time the main course was served the wine was warm We ordered an additional glasses of wine to have with dinner. By the time the 2 additional glasses arrived at the table we were done with the main course We were never offered water and when asked it never showed up The attentiveness was not there Nice place but service was lacking

The soup was so bad. like out of can. Lobster Ravioli there was no lobster a d hard to chew. so Aldente. Get a new cook. Ambience was great. but the food was q 1 out of 10

Yesterday we call to have our table and when we arrive the table was not available, outside seats was terrible because of the weather need to hold everything in the table because of the wind, the server was excellent, dinner we have appetizer to expensive for just 2 balls on each appetizer, we order food and was serve like and hour before and was not what they offer supposed to be majado and came with potatoes and was like they just hay the only left potatoes in the kitchen with any explanation of the majado and the dessert ask for vanilla ice cream was the leftovers of the box for $9.00 and cream boule for $15.00 dollars hello, then they offer a seat inside at the end with the owner at the piano, we left immediately no thanks!!! $198.00 for anything good!! Just the server!!

The website makes it excruciatingly clear that they do not keep reservations. Even if you make them a year in advance. Even if you make two reservations using different services. Even if you call three hours before and confirm the reservation. And that was borne out when my family and I showed up tonight and there were no tables available for 6 people, even though we had done all the above. We only got a table after a couple of us went in and hunted down the hostess (who’d been avoiding us for 20 minutes) and told her the jig was up. They grabbed a couple tables from next door to give us somewhere to sit (thanks to our waiter, who was great). But our dinner was outdoors on a lightless, unadorned plaza in front of some very loud musicians who were not performing jazz but rather classic rock. The food was fine (mixed reviews across the table) but very expensive for what it was, and the whole experience felt like a “gotcha” tourist trap.

Staff was kind and very friendly. But overall it was quite a disappointing experience. We waited over an hour for our food. I never got my drink didn’t even bother to ask for it at that point. My pasta looked like the kitchen staff through all their left over ingredients onto my plate. Two different types of onions, uncooked olives, undercooked Brussel sprouts, and barely any actual pasta in it. I understand sometimes substitutions need to be made but at the very least ask your customer what they would like first.

We ate cod fritters, drank a love Carli's and a Fashioned Rum! Both made by Don Fausto, master of cocktails! Incredible place and atmosphere.

Went to Carlis last night for dinner and the "rock duo" they were to have playing. We only heard Carli play for 20 min of the nearly 2hrs we were there. We left after not receiving our main course after 1 3/4 hrs. Very disappointing. The only good part of the evening was the bartender who made wonderful drinks.

Very slow service, unable to provide seat reservations as they made through the open table/after some finesse they finally did, salty dishes. Strange vibes…

Super delicious food and amazing atmosphere! Filet mignon was simply outstanding!!

We came here to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary bc it was supposed to be a romantic environment. It is a tiny hole in the wall with bar seating for 8 people. There are 5 30" round tables down the middle of the floor starting one step from the front door and seating 10. Elbow to elbow so don't expect any romance to go on. There are about the same number lined up against the outer wall and a couple in back of the grand piano which dominates the room. Plenty of seating outside with no view of anything but the road. Server told us the salads were huge so we split one and each had about 4 bites. My lobster rav was tasty, but barely warm. The volume was so incredibly loud that conversation was impossible unless you screamed at each other. Piano started at almost 8:30, and he banged the hell out of it. Nice jazz, but definitely NOT dinner music. We heard about 10 minutes of it before our meal was over. I indicated on our reservation that it was our anniversary, but no one said a word about it. What a disappointment. I can't get this night back.

Such a fantastic spot! Risotto croquettes were a great starter. The spinach ravioli with pesto sauce and spinach salad with cod fritters were both excellent entrees. And we finished with delicious carrot cake, creme brulee and espresso. Don't forget the mojito and the rum old fashion...both excellent drinks. Throw in some live music and you have yourself a marvelous evening at a delightful restaurant / piano bar. Enjoy!

When we arrived we asked for a table, and after about 10 minutes they assigned us one. So far so good and normal, the terrace looked nice and we ordered drinks and food. They brought two beers after 10 minutes, and the two missing mojitos after 20-25 minutes. The waiter apologized by saying something about the bartender that we couldn't quite understand. An hour later the food still didn't come (a burrata salad, a ceviche, some ravioli and a pasta) so we called the waiter's attention to see if anything was wrong, still trusting that it would come. 15 minutes later, we decided to ask for the amount to pay for the drinks and leave, which they did not take well at all, responding "don't talk to me like that" emphasizing arrogance instead of offering solutions, and not specifying if they were going to bring the food soon. After 10 minutes, instead of bringing the bill they come with the food, and the person who went to ask for the bill they throw the plate at the table without any respect. We decided to eat it because we were already so hungry, although the dishes were nothing out of this world and extremely expensive, in one they didn't cut the vegetables, I don't know if it was because of the rush. At the time of paying, he brought us some "courtesy" shots which he explained to us that if we noticed lumps it was the coconut that didn't have time to crush it, insinuating that we rushed them, to which I could only laugh out loud, pay 130 dollars and leave never to return. The music was nice, there's no problem with that.

Reasonably priced, but the food is outstanding! The cocktails are wonderful, some of the best I've had. I'll definitely come back next time I get to Puerto Rico!

The bartender (fausto) that’s worked there for about 20 years is absolutely top-notch , the drinks🍹he makes are to die for… the atmosphere inside and out is just a whole vibe … you definitely need to stop in to this restaurant when you come to old San Juan

We missed our reservation time due to a delay of the cruise ship arrival time. Thankfully, still able to get a seat at the bar. Ordered Caldo Taino (this mixed drink won an award) and had escargot appetizer. Highly recommend !

Food was really mediocre given the price. Our cheese board had only 3 slices of cheese and had a random assortment of berries instead. The main was fine but wasn’t enough food. We got the pecan tart which we couldn’t finish because it was way too sweet. The music was also a bit strange, a lot of covers that you would expect in a karaoke club.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the ambience at Carli’s. The guitar music was nice. I just wish we had come later to enjoy more of the music, because it didn’t start until 7pm.

We enjoyed my birthday dinner there on a Monday night after dinner Carli himself came in to play he is a very humble person and very appreciative of his guests. The dish it was cooked per my request to perfection my girlfriend had the grouper dish it was probably the best grouper she had on our stay the drinks where beyond amazing the mojitos are the best in San Juan hands down their Cuba Liberia’s best again they use the best rums for their drinks and it shows I’ve been to many restaurants that won multiple awards for their cuisine from Philly to Maine this restaurant is definitely worthy of these awards won in America. The prices are very reasonable for the great quality. I will definitely be back to Carli’s on my next visit. I can’t praise the quality enough, Carli you do have the best restaurant in Old San Juan in my opinion.. Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo, Carli y el personal. Wonderful place with live music by talented musicians in bossa nova, rock, jazz and more. Piano played by beach boys legend Carli Muñoz. Delicious quality and freshness in all dishes, and great signature cocktails. Staff is friendly and very professional. Great time at Carli's every time!.

Great atmosphere and location. They had live music and that was very nice. Service was below average with one table next to us leaving after nobody waited on them and another table getting into an argument with the waiter over the service. Only ordered a few appetizers and drinks so can’t comment on the main dishes. The escargot was the best thing we tried and that was just ok. Manchego cheese board was just ok, no originality, just some stuff thrown together. The mussels had a nice sauce but nothing spectacular. The worst item was the ceviche with tostones. This was by far the worst ceviche I’ve ever tasted. Actually it had no taste. Not sure if they even used lemons or salt. I was looking forward the ceviche and it left me extremely disappointed. The staff seemed nice but they need to be better trained on how to provide good service. From my experience I would only go back to have drinks and enjoy the ambiance. I hope they can improve on their dishes and service.

Foi otimo! The bossa nova singer/guitarist was superb. Our food was fantastic. The outside seating is the way to go in the evening. So romantic and just the best weather! You will not be disappointed!

Small, but very nice restaurant. Food was good. Try to eat at the bar. Fausto is a one man show, and one of the best bartenders we have ever had. He makes the dining experience wonderful, and he can make a lovely drink.

Updated 4 years later: the same classy spot, we missed it! You won't regret dressing up a bit for the elegant night out. This time we tried more food: the appricot chicken breast and ceviche were beyond amazing, seared tuna was cooked great but missed some seasoning. Our waiter William (?) was a seasoned gentleman and was very pleasant. Bonbon cocktail was a great dessert drink. They have live music every day, we enjoyed outside seating with 2 musicians playing and singing outside from 7 to 9pm, and then Carli himself played piano inside after 9pm. Original from 2018: What an amazing place! Elegance and charm of Old World mixed with electric character of Old San Juan. A great date spot but also a place to come alone and sit at a bar enjoying live music.

Really a teriffic stop, with welcoming and attentive service, deliciously prepared offerings ( the risottos and mero shone) and a non pretentious but serious atmosphere which included enjoyable live music on my first , but certainly won't be only visit. A gem!

One of the absolute worst restaurant experiences I've ever had.  We started with the risotto croquettes (i.e. arancini).  The rice was overcooked, gummy, and underseasoned.  They were also lukewarm.  Hubby also got a burrata salad, which was okay, although the burrata could have used some flaky finishing salt.  We ordered two different wines, one sauvignon blanc, and a pinot gris rose; both were incredibly acidic and sour.  While the restaurant obviously didnt make the wine, they selected the varietals and are responsible for storing them correctly, which I don't think they did.  Finally for the main courses, we both got fish (grouper for me, the"special" tuna for hubby).  Both entrees were cold when they arrived, about 90 minutes after we had ordered them. The music was okay, even though the pianist played random chords all night with barely a hint of any melody.  There are a ton of great restaurants in San Juan; please do yourself a favor and go anywhere but here. Would give zero stars except our server was very professional and excellent in every way. Otherwise this was the worst food on our trip. I didn’t know pasta could be done so poorly. Beautiful location and a pretty nice intimate setting. I would give it more stars but there were loud groups of people that the staff made no effort to quiet down. The piano player just stopped playing and that was a huge part of why we chose this restaurant. I didn’t linger to drink or enjoy the music because I couldn’t hear it. So I just ate and left. Food was expensive and just okay. Our drinks were not good so we sent them back. I don’t think I’d return but I hope someone else has a better experience than mine. We were looking for a nice place for our last dinner in Old San Juan, and we were so disappointed. By the end of the meal we were just laughing at how bad it was. Drinks were not tasty, service was slow, and the best part of our meal was probably the lava cake with (not enough) ice cream, probably because it was the only thing not made at the restaurant. We left ready to go get empanadas somewhere else to make up for the untouched pasta. The “mac and cheese” was like eating bland pasta in a store bought alfredo sauce. The “pesto” on the ravioli was a few sprigs of thyme and some oil? Just don’t come here expecting anything memorable or flavorful. I can’t speak to the live music because we were seated outside and couldn’t hear it, but if it was anything like the food—we weren’t sad to miss it. In spite of the fact we made a reservation several days in advance we were stuck in the back of the restaurant near the woman’s rest room and next to the manager doing paperwork. When we asked for extra bread to sop up the sauce from our appetizers, we had the hostess come over to tell us they would charge us. I was shocked to find they charged us $5 for five small pieces of baguette — all for complimenting the chef for the sauce. A high end restaurant shouldn’t be nickel and diming its customers. We walked over to Carli's after touring El Morro and were looking to explore some of old town and find a bite to eat. We lucked out and got there right as they opened at 5pm. The wife and I Loved it. ❤ For our appetizer we had the cheese board w an assortment of fruit, olives, cured meat along with Mojito's. For our Entree's wife went with the punkin w/shrimp risotto and I had the lobster ravioli. Both were excellent. Our waiter suggested some very tempting meat dishes but we were fixed on seafood. I would recommend Carli's as a great choice.. great view from the patio of the courtyard and bay. I went to this restaurant out of a recommendation. I was very disappointed at the food. The hostess seem kind after messing up. She put 2 adults and a child in a 2 person table. Now the behavior of those guest was something in itself but after putting in a reservation I wasn’t expected to sit in such a tight corner with 6 other people. 2 tables for a total of 7 people. The same tables that is meant for 2. The waitress herself was very kind. No attempts was made besides asking us if we would sit outside. After a bit we ended up doing that because it was just too much. We had appetizer. The salad which did not match its description. There was another dish that had mozzarella, tomato with a balsamic vinegar of some sort was delicious. The bread was lack luster because it was not toasted. We did had to ask for toasted bread but was told that part is limited so they are unable to Just give bread. Which I do get to a certain extent. Then comes dinner. That was the most disappointing thing of it all. I know eating out in San Juan usually have it’s wait, but we nearly finished 2 bottles of wine before dinner came. Our food was atrocious. 1 dish I said specially no cheese due to one of the guest being lactose, that created a longer wait because it had to be redone. My whole family was unable to finish their food due to its taste. I was upset that their last night was met with subpar food. Everyone was so unhappy and still hungry we ended up paying the bill and leaving. The bill was about $350 I last recall. It was such a waste of money.
