A very rude service. The owner tried to to kick us out of a private party but she just assumed that we were are not with them. She should have asked before trying to kick us out...!!!! I mean if the owner is acting this way, then I can't imagine how the staff would do better!!! Totally hated this place and will never again go!!!!!!

Amazing and Philippe was very friendly and easy to talk to. His coliflower velouté was exceptional and delicious that 4 years after I still remember it. As soon as I can, I will get back to his restaurant which is for me a must as soon as I m in San Francisco. Conviviality, savor, ambiance. I regret that I can not go there as I wish. This place is special. If you are looking for an incredible, quality, high-end-yet-unpretentious, romantic French bistro dining experience while also feeling right at home, this is your place. Not stuffy, delicious home-cooked food. The chef and staff truly take pride in their craft, and were warm and attentive without being overbearing. Best service I’ve ever had that felt genuine.

CHAPEAU! Had fathers' day dinner here and instantly became one of my favorite spots in SF. The warm and cozy ambience, creative cocktails, excellent service and perfect traditional French cuisine makes Chapeau! a must visit. Chef Philippe Gardelle's magic inside and outside the kitchen is truly remarkable. I ordered the 3 course menu and highly recommend the salmon trio, filet mignon (medium rare of course) and profiteroles. I will definitely come back!

A perfect evening! Impeccable service and exquisite cuisine. Chapeau is a tried and true French bistro with a distinctively neighborhood feeling that captures all the best things French food and culture have to offer. From the moment we stepped inside, the staff was friendly and attentive. We were there to celebrate a special occasion and they acknowledged this several times, which made it feel like they really cared. The food was incredible from start to finish, as well as the beverages. A wonderful place to celebrate, bring a date, or catch up with friends and family. We will return!

Came here in a bustling Friday night in search of French cuisine. The ambiance and service were great but the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered the escargot which was so delicious and garlicky. Perfect for crusty bread to soak up the flavors. For my entree I ordered the risotto which was a huge mistake. The dish was so bland and lacked sufficient seasoning. I added salt and even that didn’t do the trick. I struggled to finish the dish and ultimately ended the meal with no third course. For $38 dollars the risotto needs work because it’s just bad and way too expensive. Don’t know if I’d return given the meal I had. Way too expensive for the lackluster meal.

The bread was fresh and with a good crunch. Escargot was hot with lots of garlic and basil - great for bread dipping. The salmon trio looked cute but nothing special. The pork tenderloin was moist and tender. The charred cauliflower was tasty but the risotto was soft but the flavor was just ok. The French toast with caramel ice cream parred well and the chocolate lava cake with vanilla oozed out. Excellent service. The cook greeted us and the workers filled out hot water cups and wine. $35 for wine corkage fee.

The exorbitant price of the meal was not justified by its quality. I had anticipated a culinary experience comparable to the finest I had encountered in Paris, but instead, the meal was far inferior and would have been more appropriately priced at half the cost.

Classically French with big and bold flavors, ambience, and service. Our meal was fantastic overall. had probably one of the top 3 French Onion soups I've ever tasted, it was sublime. My wife enjoyed a tart with blue cheese with pear and frisée, she loved it. My filet was supposed to be medium rare and it came out closer to medium, spoiled the steak for me. The Bordeaux tasted was superb, and helped salvage the steak a bit. My wife's ratatouille was a little work of art, she loved the sauce. We had to wait about 20 mins for our table, that was the only real drawback besides that misfire on the steak. Service was great, they make you feel very welcome. July 2015.

It is our first time here. We were looking for some place near us to have dinner together for our anniversary. I have lots to say about this place! Appetizer They are both great! We ordered Escargot and Salmon Trio for our appetizer and they both are so good! For me, personally, the escargot is a little too salty but when it paired with the bread, it was really good! And the bus boy recommended us to pair them and they taste so good together! Thank to him :)) For Salmon Trio, my husband and I agreed on that it tastes okay but not so incredibly good. Entree Halibut was soooooo good! It is the only one dish I would come back for. Fillet Mignon is somewhat salty but I don’t eat beef, so I can’t really comment on this but my husband is a meat eater and he said it wasn’t a wow for him but it was fine :) Dessert Crème brûlée is good but maybe slightly too sweet for me but I think most people would like this one :) French toast is so good!!! The toast was soft inside and crispy on the outside and it was topped with salted caramel ice cream which is so rich in cream and so tasty! Here is what I was expecting; The service Our server last night, 11/04, was not really good and we were quite disappointed. He asked the tables around us how everything was doing but he skipped our table every time, every single time. He kinda looked down on us a little too. So, it is very unpleasant and sad to see such good restaurant in our neighborhood being not as friendly as it should be like this. The hostess is great! The moment we stepped into the restaurant, we were impressed by him. He was so friendly and warm welcoming us. I forgot to take his name but he was awesome! The bus boy was actually our 5 stars last night, his name is Carlos, he is great and super awesome!!!! He was the one who recommended us to try the bread with the escargot sauce while our server didn’t really care about us. I used to work in food and beverage industry for many years and still working in customer service industry, I think Carlos should actually be our server not the other. And we decided to give good tips where we really want our tips to be for Carlos and the hostess who gave us such a great service. I just don’t think our server deserved our tips at all. So, two stars off from the service point for what I expected from our server and really came out disappointed. Those good stars were for service indeed that we received from Carlos and the hostess. Thank to both for making our night last night so great 🤗🙏🏻

Nuage De Noix sont splendides! I'm probably not saying that right but out of the desserts we sampled the roasted pistachios, almonds & hazelnuts in a frozen chantilly & italian meringue were the clear winner in presentation, flavors, and "wow" factor with their Tahitienne Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée taking a close second in my book. For a tiny french bistro nestled in a heavily asian neighborhood you can miss this gem easily unless you map it. For one of my admittedly rare excursions into french cuisine I am delighted to have this bistro in SF. I sampled alot of dishes but these were my picks for the night. Appetizer: Warm brie on potato and leek darphin. (great starter. The taste went from salty to savory to sweet all in the first bite!) Entree: Duck confit (super tender, nice contrast with the mandarin slices, Sauce was slightly too salty.) Dessert: Profiteroles (good but liked the Nuage De Noix the best) Every dish showed originality; Every dish showed craftsmanship, creativity and many more positive adjectives. This is not a quick bite or a cheap one nor was it meant to be however if you have the time and money it would be well spent here. Things to note: They give you the check in a hat which is how I found out that Chapeau in french means "hat." If you have any leftovers which I unfortunately did not they will wrap it up with tin foil into a little basket or bird which is a nice touch. The owner and I presume head chef greeted us as we walked in and he's a friendly guy too. Our service was fantastic. Our waiter had an excellent grasp of the menu and our drinks were refilled promptly. Not even a hint of arrogance or annoyance from the staff which I've practically come to expect from restaurants around this price point in the city. Final Thought: You can keep France in Europe as long as this place is open I don't need to buy a plane ticket to get a great French dining experience. Bon appétit!

The food was tasty, but our server was bad. He was a tall guy with a beard and short hair. He never bothered to ask us how our food was like. The other servers were excellent, especially the white-haired gentleman who greeted us at the entrance. We had a reservation for SF restaurant week at 9 pm and were tired and thirsty after a long day in SF. When we told him that we did not drink alcohol and only wanted one mocktail, he appeared visibly displeased. To make things worse, he passed our table a bunch of times without noticing that we needed our water bottle refilled. I even waved at him, but he ignored me like I wasn't there. My husband had to shout for him to come over and help us out. The other servers also started to serve us for the last half of dinner, they were great. After we finished dinner, something weird happened. Our server suddenly became friendly and wished us: "Hope you have a wonderful night! Goodnight! Blabla..." while opening the gate for us. It was weird, but we thought maybe he was trying to make up for his earlier behavior. Then, the white-haired gentleman appeared at the gate and inquired about our meal. No wonder. Since our server was present, I did not express my dissatisfaction. I attempted to contact the restaurant via phone, but it appeared to be closed. I am posting this only as a reminder to the owner, perhaps the white-haired gentleman, of how his employee behaved. I am willing to remove this post if requested.

Service is horrendous, we waited half an hour between finishing the appetizer and the main course, with no one coming around the table to even check. The whole fiasco was grossly expensive and of course included the dreaded surcharge which raised the bill another nine dollars. If this is what dining at San Francisco has become now we’re going to be eating at home a lot more.

The crust was so crunchy and the inside was steamy and fluffy. We paid extra for the filet, which was cooked perfectly medium rare. Unfortunately the duck confer cassoulet was dry and not very flavorful. Desserts were good but you can’t really go wrong with crème brûlée. For $65, the 3 course was definitely worth it. 3 star, service was reasonably good (if a long wait to begin and at times, even though not busy) menu is a shadow of all the French things it used to have. The cassoulet was pretty poor, overcooked beans. Almost off tasting duck. Very, very , very pricey for basic Paysan level French good. I got very bad food poisoning which resolved middle of the night. Hadn't eaten anything else or drunk anything else than the food from there, so definitely there. Either viral, but most likely food bacteria since it cleared immediately on multiple sessions of porcelain deity worshipping overnight. Distinctly, and sadly very, very average, more so for outrageous prices charged. I'm fine paying 2 or 3 star prices for exceptional food. This is pricey and glorified middle of the road and would have French people irate at the quality.

The risotto was mushy, not creamy like I've had it at other places, and bland as it was cooked without the mushroom. Chapeau is worthy of the 5 stars because it's a nice neighborhood restaurant, the service was excellent and food is very good (just not the risotto).

This was our first time to Chapeau and we had a great time. It's one of my sil and bil's favorite restaurants. The owner and staff are friendly and service was excellent. We started with cocktails, I had a blueberry gimlet and my husband had a Manhattan. I loved the gimlet! It had a nice amount of blueberry puree and the gin was tangy but not overpowering. My husband enjoyed his drink too. The guys split a plate of oysters. They said they were sweet and the Asian sauce complimented them well. I had the Mesclen salad for a starter. It was a generous portion and the dressing was flavorful. The crusted cheese was yummy and perfectly melted. My husband had the tomato soup. He said it was a bit sweeter than he expected. I had the cassoulet for my entree. The duck was nicely cooked and had good flavor. The sauce was savory and had nice flavor. The sausage was also good. My husband had the pork tenderloin. He said it was also perfectly cooked. For dessert I had the blueberry tarte and he had profiteroles. The tarte was scrumptious with blueberries and almond along with vanilla ice cream. The profiteroles were also delicious with a nice chocolate sauce.

Came in here last night for dinner. It was a Friday evening so had reserved in advance. I have so much to tell about this place so I’ll split it into three parts. 1. Service We were driving from South Bay and was easily at least 30 minutes late. When we called to inform, we were greeted so kindly and were told to not rush and that they would hold the table for us! This felt so sincere and caring, and got us in a good mood already. On arrival, we were immediately taken to our table. It was already packed, so we were surprised that they held the table for so long. During the dinner too, the service was top-notch. Each food was carefully prepared only after we were done with our appetizer. 5/5 2. Food I’m not a French food expert but the food was so good, we left feeling happy. We had escargot, mesclun salad, soup a l’oignon, and filet mignon. Everything was delicious, meat was tender and juicy and left us feeling pretty full. For dessert, we ordered their French toast. I have never had French toast as a dessert after dinner but boy am glad I didn’t miss this. The bread just melted in my mouth. 5/5 3. Ambience For the price range, you’d expect a fancier ambience. But it’s very casual. The space was small, so it felt crowded and was very noisy, just like other reviews had mentioned. There was no music, so maybe that made it worse? Not sure. Ambience gets a 3/5 But I’d still give it a 5/5 overall just because the food and the service left us feeling so happy - the way you’d feel after watching a really good movie. Would definitely be visiting this place again!

Great food and service! The owner was lovely, he gives ladies a kiss on the hand before they leave. I had the tomato bisque with bread appetizer, salade landaise, escargot, duck breast, cassoulet, and crème brûlée. Then some champagne with the next table!

Good 3 courses meal, prix fix. Very popular and small so it gets noisy on a crowded weekend night

The food is fine, but does not justify the price. The cassoulet is dry, and the crème brûler had too many bitter notes.

Super ambiance, patron très sympa. Le menu offre un choix varié de plats mais peu pour les végétariens ou les personnes préférant le poisson à la viande. J'y retournerai avec plaisir durant ma prochaine visite à San Francisco.
