Clavel always delivers. Only been here three times, but it's one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore city. The whole place is just a vibe - esthetic on point. They do not take reservations, so prepare to wait. They have bar seating right next door where you can wait, or better yet, check out their speakeasy just down the street (WC Harlan). Great drinks and the dark, cool, and intimate atmosphere is fun! Back to Clavel - can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The portions are on the smaller end, so plan ahead! Service was great, despite it being a bustling Sat night. One of my favorites is their torta - so good! If you want to avoid waiting, come as soon as they open and they'll get you seated quickly.

Everything is SO delicious here. I have been to many authentic Mexican restaurants between California and Mexico and this place is definitely top 3 for me so it’s wild to think it’s in Baltimore of all places! Get here early if you don’t want to have to wait long - there’s a line out the door for a reason.

We decided to try this for a Wednesday dinner out! Beautiful location that is nice for an evening dinner because there isn’t much vehicle traffic passing by. Their menu is well designed for you to try a lot of different options. I highly recommend doing what we did and trying something with the mezcal as well as something with the tepache. The mezcalita had a beautifully complex yet savory taste. The tepache was also a pleasant surprise with a pronounced citrus note. The chips were phenomenal, clearly freshly made from scratch. All the tacos we had were fantastic, you can’t go wrong with any of the options. We also tried their specialty Negroni and that was fantastic as well.

Very unassuming from the outside - the inside is gorgeous and super spacious. We sat outside since it was a nice evening and that was also very nice. The drink special, the Baja Spritz, was so yummy and all of the food was also super tasty and at a fair price. The portions of the ceviche were especially generous and could easily have been entire meals themselves.

Clavel is such a cool vibe! The tacos are always delicious, drinks are fresh and well balanced and the atmosphere makes you feel like you are in another country! I had a Santa Sandía which was very fresh from the watermelon a little smoky punch and heat from combo of chile and mezcal. If you need something to cool off from this summer heat that’s perfect ! The carnitas taco was delicious and very flavorful and empanadas are a must! Clavel is one of my go tos but the downside is the restaurant is pretty tiny and they don’t really take reservations. It can get pretty packed very quickly! It is worth the wait and the sometimes struggle for parking!

I have been here a couple of times. Community seating area does get really hot and does not have good AC. The guacamole is very good. Smooth, flavorful and good amount of spice. For 10$, the quesadilla is very small, not worth it. Came here for the ceviche, not the best I’ve had. Wish it was more flavorful. The tuna one was a bit fishy. The lemonade is on the sour side. I like it like that but my partner didn’t so ask for extra sweetner if needed! Service is okay. Towards the end, it was hard to wave someone down. There is street parking around the premises.

Great place if you like cramped, dark, loud, expensive restaurants that don't take reservations, have no parking, don't serve fountain drinks, with hour long waits even on weekday nights and outdoor seating in an alley next to the dumpster. If you sit inside in summer, bring a folding fan or something because it's like 85° inside. The food is very good, but it's also very expensive. I don't think it's good enough to make up for the other downsides so I doubt I'll come back.

Years of being constantly packed selling $5 tacos but they still do not have any sound dampening measures- it is extremely loud anywhere inside and impossible to talk or hear someone across the table. Was seated in the rowhome indoor seating while its 95deg outside and the airflow was non-existent. Must be making millions on $5 tacos but putting zero into space improvements

Clavel was a James Beard finalist for their bar. Whilst I did not get a drink this outing, I tried my boyfriend's mocktail which was yummy and smoky. The aguachile almost took me out though it was so spicy. However it was delicious and the cucumbers help cool down the heat some. I tried the lamb barbacoa and shrimp tacos which were also good, though wasn't a super fan of the cheese on the shrimp taco. My boyfriend got the vegetarian tacos which he enjoyed. One feedback - during the summer months they may want to consider getting some stand fans for outdoor diners. Especially when we have heat waves in the area.

From gin to tequila to mezcal to spritzes to vodka to SOTOL and RAICILLA! 2) Their spirit list alone is the only one of its kind in the area. You’ll have to drive to NYC to find one like it. 3) FOOD is phenomenal. Truly Oaxacan Mexican food. No frills. Just authentic and real. 4) The space is so dope. This is one of my favorite restaurants! The decor is chic and beautifully minimal, the staff are always perfectly attentive--checking in on diners neither annoyingly too often or too infrequently--and the food is transcendentally delicious. The cocktails are incredible, too, and I still dream about one I had five years ago.... on my most recent visit last week I had some new favorites, including a dessert drink with brewed coffee, Liquor 43 (a vanilla liqueur) and orange, the resulting drink being a harmonious blend of the ingredients without being too sweet or bitter. It wasn't necessarily something I would usually go for but I'm so glad I did because it was divine! And don't sleep on the current wedge salad. I can't wait to go back soon!

If you're in the mood for some spectacular tacos and authentic Mexican food, you've come to the right place. Clavel will be having you coming back and back again. This time I went, I was craving seafood and got the shrimp and fish tacos. The toppings were unique for each taco, which is always a plus in my book. For the fish taco the tomato salsa paired extraordinarily well. My favorite has to be the fish taco paired with a crema and pickled radish on top. The crunchy radish and crispy exterior of the fish complements the soft interior of the fish and flour tortilla. These tacos will leave you wanting more. We also got the ceviche plate which was delectable. Slightly on the saltier side however.

The issue didn’t arise until we began to notice our neighbors around us began to receive their food before us. We ordered in total 7 tacos, and we received our food after 45 mins of waiting. I have been going to Clavel for over six years, but today the service was simply repulsive. I had a manager come to talk to me about what happened and, despite I appreciate their concern, it did no compensate the very poor attention and dismissive attitude I received from the person at the cash register in the attached store/to-go side. I ordered two drinks and some “salmón crudo,” and they forgot one drink, making me pay for it by itself with the added 20% service fee (NOT gratuity; gratuity is what a client gives willingly for service—get your terms straight). Since the to-go raw salmon was going to take between 30 to 45 minutes to come, I got some chips and guacamole, which I paid by themselves with the 20% service fee again. When I was finally brought the salmon to my table at the elevated terrace space, where the cashier saw me with my friend eating our chips and having the drinks, there were no forks nor napkins included, as if we were supposed to eat with our hands. When I went inside to ask for a couple of forks, I was met with a nasty attitude, saying that it was supposed to be to go, so they do not provide (plastic) forks; that where I was seating is a to-go section, and there is no “full service.” Why then add that 20% service fee there (in plus, with the clear suggestion of adding further tip on the receipts)? Be honest, increase the prices and pay decent salaries to competent servers. It was all very unpleasant. I do not need to go back.

Clavel is awesome! Good food, friendly staff, and a quality bar! The food is great! If I had to pick my top three favorite menu items, they would be: 1. Pescado (pictured) which I recommend getting a side of chips with as I find the tortillas aren't quite enough for all the delicious sauce, 2. Tamal De Elote Fresco (pictured) 3. El Luchador, which typically I get as a quesadilla (a fried fish with slaw quesadilla? Crazy I know, but don't knock it till you try it) (pictured) The bar, while it may not be the largest selection, all their spirits are of the highest quality! I quite enjoy the suero mezcal (pictured) made with mezcal, limon, and Topo Chico. I like it because of how refreshing it is while still allowing you to know the mezcal is there. I guess this is like a mezcal version of the ranch water? Their cocktails all sound interesting, but have never had them. It's hard not to get a pour of one of their new and or interesting mezcals and tequilas while I'm there. I've gotten to try some awesome different spirits I've not seen elsewhere or have seen at the store, but wanted to try first. The staff at Clavel is awesome! They are friendly and really seem to know their stuff and can make good recommendations. I know some of them even go to Mexico from time to time and visit some of the smaller distilleries there, so it's kind of like they have their ears to the ground in terms of what's going on.

We had the Santa Sandia mezcal and a margarita for cocktails. WE started wtih the Aquachile which is a nice appetizer with fresh shrimp, but a little too spicy to enjoy well. This establishment has seamlessly woven itself into our weekly dining repertoire, becoming an essential go-to destination. Its appetizers, featuring tantalizing options such as ceviche, queso, and fundido, are unequivocally exceptional. The tacos, while modestly priced, deliver an explosion of flavor and satisfaction with each bite. The margaritas, hailed as among Baltimore's finest, boast an unparalleled taste that elevates the entire dining experience. Moreover, the happy hour, graciously offered from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays, further enhances the value proposition by affording patrons discounted rates on both margaritas and appetizers. To conclude such a delightful culinary journey, the tres leches cake stands as a testament to the restaurant's commitment to culinary excellence. It’s not just uncomfortable seating but fatphobic seating and I think we just need to at least name that. Service - not great but we definitely came during a big rush. Arrive 15 minutes before they open, or be prepared to wait over 45 minutes for a table. Waiting isn't half bad though, they do have a separate waiting room where you can order drinks, food, and sit down (although space is very limited in this room). If the room is full, you can head down the block to WC Harlan for cocktails which will never disappoint. Once you received the text you have 10 minutes to get there, don't miss it! The seating arrangement is pretty nice but the seats do leave a bit to be desired in terms of cushion, but they aren't the worst I've sat. You'll forget all about the wait, the chair, the hunger, once your food comes. My wife and I have never had ceviche so substantial and delicious, even in Mexico itself. The cocktails are incredible as well, and I recommend their Mezcal tasting. Raicilla is rare but Clavel has it! Since the experience is so incredible you'll find that many of the tables choose to sit for quite a long time. Even with all the hustle and bustle we never felt rushed during our dining experience. My wife and I will continue to come back to Clavel for years to come (if we're lucky), and is easily one of my top 3 recommendations for dining in Baltimore!

This is a restaurant worth a visit. My experience was great. The only issue I had was parking, if you're not there early enough you will have to park and walk a couple of streets. It's also best to arrive early because this place fills up fast. This was my first Mexican restaurant, so I had no clue what I was about to eat. Thanks to our server Ray, who suggested everything I ordered (I asked for their choosing), I was able to order. I had a pineapple coconut cocktail, strong and sweet, fulfilling. Appetizers were stuffed Tamales, and I got a cheese dip with roasted vegetables in the middle of the dip, served with chips. (This is the english version. Lol) My entree was beef tips on a sandwich bread...it was to die for. My friend enjoyed their dessert; however I did not. So I won't mention what they had. This place was clean, family friendly, original, and culturally kept. The cost is very reasonable, $40 should be enough per person. I will be returning.

But as there was no were else to stash us it's all I have to work off of. Simple a top 5 restaurant in the Baltimore area. Everything on the menu is great. Just watch out for the hot sauce.

Great staff and atmosphere. No seat is in a bad spot. Yummy appetizers. Tacos are definitely small and "specialties". Still some drink options if you don't like mezcal!

Excellent queso and very cool vibe. The best tres leches I've ever had! The ceviche was not to my taste but we did enjoy the ambiance.

This place has such a vibe. I love the food, the service and the drinks! Came here after an event. The neighborhood can be sketchy but all is well. The food is amazing! The tacos and empanadas were delicious. I ordered the fish with pablano and cheese and it was simply amazing with the tortillas! Definitely the place to try.

I have been eyeing this place for years and finally experienced the greatness Clavel offers. From the beautiful decor to the attentive service, Clavel is a place that you will constantly frequent. We ordered the queso dip with chorizo, fish, chicken, and pork tacos with several margaritas. The queso was perfectly hot and creamy with the delicious smokiness from the chorizo. The tacos were phenomenal. They were fresh, and the flavors were authentic. They have a wonderful happy hour selection, so we ordered the margaritas. Once you order one, you will definitely crave another. Overall, everything was wonderful. Tips: Get there early. They don't open to 500 p.m. but the line will start to pick at 4:45 ish. Thank me later😊.

Great ambiance! This place is full until closing. People seemed very happy. The margarita was great. I did not have a real meal, but the guac was good, spicy!

Modern elevated Mexican restaurant in Baltimore. Expect higher prices than a standard taqueria, you’re paying for the vibes too! Happy Hour- M-Th from 5-7PM, $4 off margaritas and queso. Highlights- Carne de res taco, Happy hour wmargaritas, $6 tres leches, great lively interior! Getting there/getting a table- Street parking. We came on a Thursday night and it was packed. We were told it was a 30 minute wait for a table (note: they don’t take reservations), and that we could wait at their storefront next door and order cocktails. We opted for that since the entryway was so small and there weren’t any seats at the bar. The wait was less than 30 mins and we didn’t even get our drinks yet before our table was ready. Restaurant vibes- Very lively. Pretty loud with people talking. A little small. Aesthetic hanging lights in the dining room. I liked the vibe! What we ordered- Once seated, service was quick. We ordered the tuna ceviche to start (Atun con Piña). 4 tacos - 2 pork (Cochinita Pibil, Carnitas con Salsa Verde) and 2 beef (Barbacoa, Carne de Res). We also ordered a quesadilla and added the chicken tinga (Tinga de Pollo). Food review- Atun con piña tuna ceviche on top of a pineapple and tostada, a little fishy but good pairing with the fresh pineapple and the salty tostada which tasted like Fritos lol Tacos I’m not a huge pork person in general so none of those blew my mind. The one that I really liked was the Carne de Res- which was the sirloin tips. It was savory and had good flavor. Would order again. All the meats were moist and not dry. Their corn tortillas were also a highlight for me- there was a blurb on the menu that they prepare them using an ancient process. Quesadilla Pretty good. The quesadilla uses queso chihuahua which has a sharper flavor than a standard cheese blend. Not a bad thing- just expect a little punch. We ordered it with the chicken tinga- which I would recommend. It paired well with the cheese. Dessert - We got the tres leches which came astronomically fast. It had really good flavor and not too sweet which is my preference, but if I’m being picky, the cake isn’t as smooth in texture as other tres leches that I’ve had elsewhere. For $6 though, it’s honestly a steal for a dessert at a restaurant. Give it a try! Drinks- had to get the margaritas of course during happy hour. It was $1 extra for any add ons, which wasn’t really worth in my opinion. The margaritas were good- can’t complain about the happy hour price either! Service- Friendly and fast. 20% gratuity included on your bill.

This place comes so highly recommended I felt the need to give it another chance x 2 and still feel underwhelmed. The tacos are not great…and you’re better off going to Highlandtown for more authentic tacos. They say it’s “elevated” but nothing about the food feels that way. The tacos we ordered were dry or super wet and led to some soggy tortillas that just fell apart. Menu Drinks are good but nothing amazing. Queso fundito was great and about the only thing that was really delicious. The Aguachile is a nice addition but honestly haven’t found a comparison at other locales to compare. Worst thing is the wait after 6 pm, where it can be upwards of 1 -1.5 hours for a table.

I know it's a Mexican restaurant but like EVERYTHING on the menu is in Spanish. We had no idea what we were getting mostly. The food was pretty good but trying a little to hard to be upscale and it didn't really land. I got a soup with shrimp. Was in a regular coffee mug on a plate, a single shrimp, a laughably small portion of rice, and a single carrot stick and single celery stick. Wasn't sure how to eat it, since you can't really spoon a carrot stick. Left me hungry. Tacos were good but also a little skimpy. Service was mediocre. A few times we needed something and I did the little perk up and make eye contact with the servers walking by and they either couldn't tell I needed something (I was pretty obvious) or just pretended they didn't notice. But overall they were friendly so it's forgivable. Go and expect to spend a moderate amount and be hungry or spend a ton to get enough for dinner.

Amazing place with excellent food and service. No reservations taken so get there early or expect to wait. If you do opt to wait , there are two bars to kill time. One is part of Clavel (left of main entrance) and the other is a speakeasy a block away called WC Harlen.

Great food and cocktails but doesn’t taste the same always. Ceviches are a bit disappointing. Huitlacoche is mostly made of culture mushrooms.. but given where we’re at it is overall a gem.
