Always excellent!!! I had the gyro sandwich, love it, my husband had the chicken plate...it was so juicy and fresh and the taste was amazing..ohhh and the greek fries❤️❤️❤️ Our commute is long but 100% worth it! Ohhh, another thing, very courteous not only to the customers but to the kitchen staff as well! That's a BIG deal!

One of my favorite spots in Evanston to pick up lunch. The food is great - I especially like the chicken country pita, egg lemon soup, and Maria fries. Prices are very reasonable and I never have to wait long. Good atmosphere inside too. I do wish they had more vegetarian options, but the ones they have are good!

The food here is one of a kind. A true gem. We love the vegetarian salad with gyros meat and the veggie sandwich — a pita wrapped around generous portions of cucumber red onion and tomatoes on top of feta. Ive also had the half chicken. Lower stars for atmosphere only because the place is old (but clean) and the drinks in house are pricey and small $2.50 for 12 ounce can. Oh and be warned, cash only. But they do have an ATM in the atrium. Still this place is a must for the food. We no longer live in Evanston but when work takes me there I carryout. The salad traveled well with a bit of preparation and separation for reheating.

My wife wanted some vegetarian mousaka for mothers day so I called in and placed a pick up order. I was told 15-20 minutes for the food to be ready, and it took me over 25 minutes to get there. Upon arriving I was told my order wasnt ready, and one of the guys at the counter was bothering me trying to get me to buy one of their over priced $6 macro brews while I waited. I paid for my order and waited at the counter. Ultimately my order wouldn't be ready until 45 minutes after I placed it. While standing at the counter I had the displeasure to watch my wife's mousaka be prepared. It was from a frozen tray of food not even prepared there, but rather at Athenian Foods in Melrose Park. And it was re-heated on the same grill they were using to cook burgers, meaning this previously vegetarian dish was no longer vegetarian. I think it is safe to assume any even minorly complex dish which is more involved than heating something on a griddle, is purchased from a food service company like Sysco and is just re-heated to order. When I got home I began unpack the char-burger I ordered. Neither the burger nor bun was charred, nor do I think they have an actual grill to do so. And it was the saddest burger i've ever seen, worse than even McDonalds fare, just a thin patty of beef in a crushed bun. The bottom bun was also sopping wet due to the white wine they coat their "greek" fries in. Most curious of all is that I was forced to pay $44 and some change for this Sysco-tier slop. I have no clue how they arrived at this total, as according to their menu prices the Mousaka was $15, the burger was $14, a half order of fries was $4.50 and the minestrone soup was $4, or $37.50 in total. With tax I should have only been charged $41.34 assuming 10.25% sales tax. This business is cash only, and I can only assume it is because they have been kicked off their payment processor due to excessive chargebacks for habitually over billing customers. So in summary if you want poorly re-heated frozen food or the saddest burgers imaginable, that take twice as long as quoted to be ready, from a restaurant who lies about whether or not dishes conform to your dietary restrictions, go to Cross-Rhodes, if not i'm sure Yelp can help you find a far better Greek diner that wont steal your money.

Great place for Greek food! Gyro is tender, and the Greek half chicken is incredible! Get it with the Greek fries! The Lemon soup is to die for.

A true Evanston staple. No frills, just excellent food, friendly staff, and fairly priced food. Their baklava is still my all-time fave (dripping with honey). I love that this is a mom-and-pop establishment that’s been around forever with a super loyal customers.

This place used to maintain a certain quality standard. Good chicken, real chicken cooked to perfection on top a greek salad. Now, I go back and the chicken had no chicken flavor and seemed more like funeral meat. Maybe it was a fluke, idk but it was not good. Bring back quality. They have organic, kosher and halal, no excuses!!

Ordered carry-out from Cross-Rhodes the other night. The staff were lovely to interact with at pick up. Food was delicious- everything from the tzatziki, meats, and the Greek fries. The burger was also very good, and cooked perfectly medium-rare, as asked. We will definitely be back!

If they were not still cash only would be 5 stars just for the Greek fries. Everything else is just a bonus. Cash only is getting old.

This place was recommended by a member at our church in downtown Chicago - so it’s well known! Both the meat combo platter and gyros sandwich were delicious and the servings were huge. Everyone is super nice in general, but especially friendly about dining with kids, and it’s a huge plus that they have high chairs now! It is cash only but they have an ATM

I've been living in the neighborhood for 2 years and finally gave Cross Rhodes a try, please don't wait that long and try it ASAP! Loved the food so much that that I came back a second night in a row. Staff is welcoming and accommodating, and the space a wonderful reminder of Rhodes Greece. Trust that I'll be coming back more often than before.

Was introduced to this place by the love of my life in college back in '97. Always loved it, the staff, the owner and food. After more than a decade so glad it's still here, still great food and his daughter is carrying the torch. Best mom n pop resto in the north shore. Thank you for keeping it real! Will always come in when I'm near! Ps, yes I know it's a cardinal sin to put bbq on the gyro...but their bbq sauce is the bomb! And, the same it's always been 😇. AND REMEMBER CASH ONLY...only downside to me.

Best burger and fries in Evanston hands down, it had me in a heaven!!! so fresh and delicious, perfectly cooked. A staple! Great staff and atmosphere 10/10 don't forget about the egg lemon soup!!! So special.

Sad to see, but the place has really gone downhill over the years. The food was always a little inconsistent, but the price balanced it out. Every year, though, since well before this inflationary period, they’ve hiked the prices. Now the food is more expensive than other similar but higher quality restaurants. The last time we ate here, like so many times in the last few years, our gyros was subpar - not slices, but little dried out broken pieces. The fries were somehow both soggy and overcooked. And their tzatziki had the stalest tasting ingredients. There is so much better Greek (even fast food) throughout the city. I imagine most people still go here because of the nostalgia, but it’s plainly not what it used to be.

Ordered a very basic greek salad with chicken kabob, with no pita even included. I've never ordered a Greek salad that didn't come with pita. I could not believe it when the guy said $17. This place is completely overpriced. They are also cash only. CASH ONLY!!!!????? So that was an extra $3 to use the ATM to take out cash, since I have Chase. Ugh. So, the total paid was $20 for a very basic salad with 2 small chicken kabob sticks. Never ever again coming back.

An Evanston institution. The BEST gyros and Greek fries that I know of. Huge servings. The one thing to know is that Cross-Rhodes is CASH ONLY.

My family has been coming to Cross-Rhodes my whole life; it is an Evanston institution. When I moved to DC, I would try to visit the restaurant every time I was home. And when my wife and I started dating, I was so excited to introduce her to this long-time favorite. In addition, the service here is great. The whole team clearly enjoy working there, and do their best to make you feel welcome. Always a friendly face with a good recommendation or a joke or a fun story to share. Cross-Rhodes’ Greek fries (with a lemon vinaigrette) are probably my favorite fried potato. My wife loves avgelemono soup, and this is her favorite in the Chicago area. Great gyros, delicious souvlaki, and lovely tsatsiki. Their red sauce (bbq) is also fantastic. It is cash only, so make sure to grab some green before you go (which you will, because it’s great). There’s a reason the reviews are all so high. Cross-Rhodes isn’t fancy, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a family joint that provides food and service from the heart.

We moved away from the area years ago, but often still come here when we're in town. Good food; low key; reasonable prices; great service. Don't expect fancy. We often order the vegetarian salad, with gyros added. It includes Greek fries, which are delicious, and with the gyros is enough for a meal for two.

Greek fries are very good. Burgers are very good. Steak is very good. Country pitas are very good. Hummus is very good. Chicken sandwiches are very good.

This food is TOP NOTCH! CASH ONLY. Bring CASH - their ATM charges $3.50. I've stood in line to order or pick up and have been ignored for a long time because their phone rings off the hook. I ate inside once. Service is great. The atmosphere is a little dated and cold (not temperature but atmosphere). Great deal on wine if you eat in.

I've been going to Cross-Rhodes with my family since I was small. It's a wonderful place with the best gyros and people who care about their customers! Always friendly staff and delicious food!

The husband, grandson, and I went to Cross-Rhodes for lunch on a Saturday, arrived a few minutes after the noon hour, a few of the other tables were occupied and as time went on, the place started to fill a bit. Perused the menu for a few minutes, but we all three settled on the 8oz. charburgers w/cheddar cheese and the "greek fries" (which are scrumptious!) I took my lettuce, tomato & onion off and made a salad... 😃 Our server was great! Quick to bring our drinks, friendly & helpful with a question, etc. Food came quickly and everything was really good. >>> This is our second visit, the first being several months ago on a Saturday evening when they were packed (and still had timely service) Also that last time, we also ordered charburgers AND their cucumber salad which was HUGE. And with all the customers that evening, it was quite a lively atmosphere! Cross-Rhodes has a varied menu with lots of choices... both Greek and American fare are served for lunch and dinner. This is a casual, basic storefront restaurant with a friendly staff and well worth trying. Note: cash only, no credit cards.

Great Greek restaurant with large portions and great service. Was still doing vegetarian food for Lent at the time. Had vegan minestrone and the vegetarian mousaka and greek salad to go.. Also had carrot cake for dessert. Will definitely return when I can have meat.

My opinion.... For what it's worth it that this is one of Evanston (Chicago gems) We usually order take out from here and I swear you could order for a small army and the time would be... "About 20 minutes... Cash only". This is quality Greek quisine at a reasonable price and family owned for a couple of generations now helmed by the founders daughter who is not only super human but a hero when you've got to feed the wildlings and it's ... "20 minutes". Hard to believe there are people who've lived in Evanston who haven't experienced simply because it's part of the family survival emergency kit Atmosphere... My opinion... Authentic Greek European neighborhood style restaurant. In otherwords, it's like your invited to someone's home for dinner and Gramma sits at the head. Very casual and no frills with kitchen cranking at the front entrance and absolutely nothing to hide and says... this is who we are and if you don't like it... kindly step aside sweetie cause there are people waiting. The Food is Normally Very Delicious at Cross Rhodes. But on Wed - Dec 28, 2022 My Marinated Charred Pork Pita Sandwich was Extremely Soggy and Sloppy Wet! So I wasn't able to Enjoy it this time, but the Greek Fries & Greek Salad was Good. So the Next Time if I decide to stop there in the future, I Will Definitely tell the Staff to Put My Sauces for My Sandwiches in a Cup on the Side. Then I will still Order the Greek Fries and A Greek Salad, then Add Some of the Fresh Crispy Salad to the Pita Sandwich. Also I might try the Greek Chicken Over the Greek Salad, Among Other Dishes Eventually. Last Again I'll make sure that I don't order anymore Soggy Pita Sandwiches, the Sauce will go on the Side in a Cup! Then I can vote 5* instead of 3* Okay Have a Happy New Year🥂🥳🥂🥳

I used to eat here regularly when I lived in Evanston 25 years ago. I’ve just been back and it was absolutely as wonderful as I remember. Attentive and friendly staff, quick service and incredible Greek food. You will not regret a visit.

The positives are that the staff was very friendly and the Minestrone soup was good. However, a restaurant should be judged by the entrees and the the moussaka we ordered, was the worst moussaka I've ever had. When I called to place the order, they told me that the moussaka was premade. I assumed it means that it was made that morning, unfortunately this was not the case. It looked at least 3 days old and tasted like it. In addition to not being fresh, it was also ridiculously bland. If I was charged fast food prices, I would have given an extra star because you get what you paid for. Considering that this is Evanston and Chicago is a short trek away, you will have considerably better options than this one.

Try the chicken Greek-style dinner. Cross-Rhodes serves real food that satisfies. Skip the fast food places and go here instead. You'll be glad that you did.

A friend brought me here for lunch to join a friend from the neighborhood. The menu focuses on a variety of Greek food, but also has a few burgers. IMHO, Greek food has enough tasty variety to please most. Apps are in the $5.50 -7 range for spanakopita; feta and olives plate; hummus served with pita; etc. Soups are $3.55 for a cup, $5.50 a bowl. A variety of dinners range from Gyros and half a BBQ chicken (around $15) to lamb chops ($33), and come with Greek fries, rice, or a skewer of veges, tossed dinner salad or soup,and pita or French bread. the "hot dish" Greek dinners (Moussaka, pastitsio, etc) are $13.50, and come with salad or soup and pita or French bread. Half-pound burgers (about $12-15) come with fries or rice, tomato/onion/pickle garnish, on a bun or pita. Various sandwiches and gyros are mostly $10 or under. Salads range from a basic tossed ($5) to $10 for a rather large Greek salad with big slabs of feta. Added protein (chicken, etc.) is mostly around $7.25. On offer are bottled beers for mostly about $5, with a specialty microbrew each month $7.50. Glass/1/2 carafe/carafe or bottle of wine is about $7.50/$15/$22 respectively. Wines are mostly USA, but some from Greece, some from other parts of the world. I had the moussaka, and I chose the garden salad for the side ($13.50, came with pita.) My friends each had the large Greek salads, and one chose fries for the side and extra tzatziki sauce, the other an excellent egg lemon soup. It was lunchtime - we stuck with waters. Fresh pitas were very good. All was pretty tasty, but could perhaps use a little more seasoning (see below.) Casual dining room with tables. Friendly, helpful, attentive service. So why did I knock them down a star? My moussaka seemed pretty stingy with the meat layer. My garden salad lacked much flavor in the watery dressing, although the greens, tomato, onion, and black olives were good and fresh-tasting. They could be a little more assertive in the seasoning for the dressing. The burger, gyros, and souvlaki that went by to other tables looked very good. Perhaps those might have been the better choice, although my moussaka was good enough, and not anything that I'd make at home. If I lived closer, I'm sure I'd be back, but perhaps focus on other dishes.

Souvlaki dinner is flavorful and flamed to perfection. Served on a pitas, on a bed of savory rice, with tomato and onion garnish, all is Καλός!

So many wonderful things to say about Cross Rhodes. Where should I begin? The yummy zesty Greek fries, don't forget to turn them into Maria fries with the Greek feta on top. The Greek chicken is to die for and let's not forget about the homemade egg lemon soup which definitely has to be a family recipe! The staff is at another level. I have never felt more welcomed and warm than at this cozy diner! Everyone is very welcoming, attentive and smiling. The servers, cooks and owner are always talking to customers and giving top notch service! Best spot in Evanston if not in the entire Chicago land area!!

It's an Evanston staple for a reason. Born and raised in Evanston my parents introduced me to this restaurant when I was a child. I'm 30 years old now and my goodness is it still delicious. I love there egg lemon soup, the gyro is sliced thin and portioned oh so generously. There is no restaurant in the area that can compete with their Greek fries. Their Greek style chicken has the right amount of crispy texture, and holds the delicious juicy flavor inside for you to enjoy. I did not get the waitresses name but I've seen here there for quite some time, she is very friendly, attentive and caring. A restauraunt or any establishment is nothing without great people like her. Sincerely a happy, fed and satisfied customer.

My sister lives near Evanston and whenever I visit I DEMAND my CrossRhodes chicken (with steak fries, doused with vinegar) and lemon soup. It’s a highlight of my trip every time! (Could you please open in NJ? You’d do great here!!)

I've been in Chicago for four decades and have eaten many gyro's. This is the best one that I've experienced. And the Greek fries are just as good. Also the portions are more than enough for anyone. I recommend this this place to anyone in the Chicagoland area.

I order the same meal every time, so I'm not too knowledgeable about the other dishes they offer, but they do a stellar job with my skirt steak, rice, and salad. This is an Evanston classic. Give it a try! 2019

I ordered lunch today for my client and I and the food was absolutely horrendous. The chicken was completely dried out the rice was so gummy and sticky it was worse than something you get an a frozen meal. To make matters worse they charge $15 per meal plus without my knowledge charged another 220 for some sauce that I expected would come with it not that I would pay extra for. I will definitely not be recommending this place to anyone and I won’t be visiting again. Frankly they get better food at Dengeos

I've been going here for years solely for the Greek fries! Perfect anytime but especially when you get off the CTA Main stop after being stuck at the Howard stop in the dead of winter. They are crispy but soft and everything a potato should be-- salt and vinegar potato chips in fry form! Cash only!
