We had the Steak frites ($39) and Wiener schnitzel ($32 +/-, didn’t get a detailed receipt and online menu prices are wrong). The steak was fine, the frites, however were french fry strings, I’ve never seen them that thin. Impossible to pick up with a fork and difficult to eat as finger foods. The schnitzel was more breading than veal. Cabbage and spatzel were fine. Mini-baguette was perfect. Very good beer and wine selection. Bottom line: food was low on flavor to my taste but the service was great and ambience was on-point. Price? High for your average town but in line with the rest of restaurants in this touristy town.

My wife and I reserved a table for Sunday evening. Typically a slow day for Galena, and this evening was no exception. It was rather warm outside at 88º but, the outdoor seating area was empty and shaded with a light breeze blowing through. We were delightfully greeted just inside the door as if we were expected company stopping by for the evening. After asking if we could sit outside, we were quickly shown the patio and offered whichever table, out of about 8, we liked. After choosing the table of our liking, Hannah introduced herself, presenting the beer and wine list. I have to admit that having perused the menu online beforehand, I was not expecting such a, all things considered, broad range of wine and beer to choose from. They even had my old standby from my days of being stationed in Germany, Kristallweizen! Drinks were set atop our table, and Hannah ran through a few specials. What caught our attention was their Soup Du Jour, "Heated Zucchini Vichyssoise". Having never tried a vichyssoise before, we were intrigued and decided to give it a go. I am truly at a loss for words to describe the Chef's vichyssoise except for "sublime masterpiece". A part of me would want the Chef to make this for sale to the vast public but, the better part of me knows this is not something to be taken so lightly. It should never be canned or jarred and then sold off on the shelf of just any grocery market. The experience of the vichyssoise alone is far above the insulting idea of mass production. It must be experienced as the Chef intended. If it available during your visit, I recommend it with the utmost conviction and amity. Wow, that's a lot to say about a soup! Deservedly so. My wife enjoyed a trout with haricot verts(green beans to us Americans) and enjoyed it immensely. Her trout was delicious and it is worthy of your choice should you crave seafood prepared in a light and refreshing manner. I elected to try their wiener schnitzel with spätzle and sauerkraut, as I'm sure many reviewer before me has. A little aside here: Hannah, my wife and I, to this point, have established a lovely rapport and considering she absolutely hit a grand slam with the vichyssoise, we were very amenable to her suggestion. So when Hannah offered a jaeger sauce that was "off menu", I enthusiastically said yes. I've had schnitzel once in the past 20 plus years since I last visited Germany and this was as good as any schnitzel I *ever* devoured in Deustchland. Believe me, I've had my fair share of schnitzel! The weiner schnitzel is also deserving of your palate should you fancy. Who knows? You might even be fortunate enough that the Chef would have a jaeger sauce available! Sadly, the missus and I threw in the towel and left zero room for dessert. We know better than to do that next time. I will skip lunch before dining here to ensure I can partake in dessert. If what we had was any indication, their dessert has to be positively decadent. One never thinks you'd have a "Midwestern Goodbye" with an employee at a restaurant but, there we were with Hannah, just letting the time go by along with our pleasant and casual conversation. Saying goodbye felt like we had made a new friend. Hopefully you will say the same after your experience here. DISCLOSURE: I am not affiliated with Fritz & Frites in any way. I have not, nor will I ever, be compensated for this or future reviews. My wife and I have never met any of the staff previous to this visit.

We found out about this place on Trip Advisor. We decided to eat there based on their five star reviews. We were not disappointed. This restaurant has limited seating capacity, so reservations are recommended. They are only open Wed through Sun. The service and the decor are impeccable. They offer French and German delicacies which are cooked to perfection. My husband had the Choucroute Garni and I had the Trout Almondine. We also had the Onion Soup Gratinee and shared that as our appetizer. If you would like a unique, relaxing dining experience while visiting Galena, we highly recommend Fritz and Frites.

We loved this charming restaurant. We chose it to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we are glad we did. It was a great choice! The atmosphere was romantic with the candlelit tables and soft music in the background. The food was amazing! We loved the French onion soup, and my chicken schnitzel was so good! Fantastic little German/French bistro in downtown Galena. Nice outdoor patio for outdoor dining. Atmosphere is elegant and welcoming. The import beer list is truly staggering. Some of the world’s best beers are represented here, like Hirter Morchl, Grevensteiner, Ayinger, and many, many others. The German chocolate cake is staggeringly delicious and a hearty portion. The spätzles are just like Oma used to make!

Fritz and Frites has been singled out as the No. 1 restaurant in Galena, Illinois. Located at 317 North Main Street, it was created by Fred Grzeslo and his wife Karyn to give diners the feel of a French Bistro. But the Alsatian cuisine offers a little French and a little German. If you like German food, you'll like Fred's wiener schnitzel or sauerbraten (marinated beef) served with red cabbage or sauerkraut. If you prefer French food, you'll like Fred's steak frites or poulet roti (garlic roasted chicken). Open from 4 to 8 on Wednesday and Thursday, 4 to 9 on Friday and Saturday and 4 to 8 on Sunday, you can dine indoors or on the outdoor patio. One popular starter is a bottle of German beer with a chicken liver pate. My wife and I don't drink so we chose another direction. We started with escargot with snails, butter, garlic and brandy flambe, baked brie with apple brandy, apples and leeks, Caesar salad with baby Romaine wedge and a bowl of caramelized onion soup with Swiss and Gruyere cheeses. For her entree, my wife chose Atlantic salmon with lingonberry sauce, spaetzle and pomme frites. I couldn't resist Fred's wiener schnitzel, a breaded and pan fried veal cutlet with sauerkraut and German potato salad. For dessert, we were delighted to see profiteroles on the menu. Love the vanilla bean ice cream sandwiched between a fresh puff pastry topped with chocolate sauce drizzle and finished with powdered sugar. It is a delicious dessert that is a rarity on restaurant menus.

Had the duck patte for an appetizer. Everyone enjoyed there dinner so much. Personally I can't wait to get back there for the sauerbraten. Waitress was phenomenal and we sat outside and we enjoyed that so much. Thanks to the owner for the offer of an earlier reservation to sit outside. I believe our Waitress was Lisa from Wisconsin so she knew how to muddle a great old fashioned.

The food was a real disappointment. The onion soup came with a SLICE of american cheese on top instead of grated swiss cheese, not completely melted and the soup was lukewarm not hot and lacked onions. Nice family restaurant in the heart of Galena. We ordered German Spaetzle and Schnitzel, and Haricot Verts from the French selections. Servings were generous, and service was exceptional. We asked for a shared plate, and they divided for us in the kitchen so the presentation was beautiful! The restaurant came highly recommended, and the food did not quite meet our high expectations. (We may have just been there on an off night. Sunday evening around 5pm.) We felt that everything was slightly under seasoned. I could not taste garlic, lemon or pepper on the green beans. The German items are typically served with gravy, in our experience, and although OK individually, we really missed that.

With several cocktails, appetizer, and entrees for two people the bill was pretty pricey. They sent out a slice of german chocolate cake for my birthday which was so nice of them and amazing. This small bistro at the north end of Main St is a hidden gem that we "discovered" early in 2023 and wound up making a point of returning with a guest in November. As the secret appears to be "out," I would recommend reservations as the establishment has limited seating. Their claim to fame is their menu is a mix of German and French cooking. Not since WWII has there been such a "collaboration" of the two countries. LOL! My wife enjoyed the Sauerbraten so much the first time, she ordered it the second time. I enjoyed the Wienerschnitzel (veal) and everything on our plates: red cabbage and spaetzle was tasty and cooked to perfection. I also had the Steak Frites, a house specialty and again, I was not disappointed. The hanger steak was deliciously marinated and the frites were outstanding.

We ordered the muscle special the sauce for the muscles was good it was leaks and a cream sauce by pretty bland overall. The swine schnitzel or the pork schnitzel Was pounded out way too thin and the 2 layers of breading was thicker than the pork layer itself. It was priced $19 on the website and $24 in the restaurant. Service started out okay but we were forgotten about until the entrance came. The spatzel was good. But did not get enough. The red Cabbage was Okay but tasted like it came out of a glass jar at Piggly Wiggly. The friets were actually shoestring potatoes that came out cold and what little heat they had didn't last long they should have been thick friets Or even fries would have been better. We were told they had garlic aolie for the muscles but it was curry Aolie. Overall I would say it's overpriced and not authentic at all. Food was edible but very expensive I wouldn't recommend going here you don't get what you pay for.

I specifically tried and loved the baguette, schnitzel, spaetzle, salmon, and German chocolate cake. It was a romantic spot with room to accommodate family.

Super nice people and good Midwestern German food. Fairly bland, but a good, safe bet if you don't like exploring too much.

We came back on this trip to Galena. We were pleased to see more people dining this time around because the food really is good. We started out with the ratatouille tart, which comes with a side salad. It was very good albeit a bit messy to eat and even messier to split. For our mains, my husband got the cassoulet and I got the salmon. I was a bit disappointed that the special was the same as when we first went, trout almondine. While good, I wish there were a few more fish/seafood centered options or vegetarian for the main. For dessert we went with the strudel. Again the food and service didn't disappoint. My husband's portion of cassoulet was quite generous. This will remain on our shortlist when visiting town.

We chose this fantastic restaurant to eat on our first night in Galena celebrating my partner's birthday. The food was exquisite and the service was excellent. I had the special, which was a trout and my server helped me select a wine to pair with it. We enjoyed dessert and B & B apertif which was a real treat. This restaurant was not only recommended to us by our BNB host, but also the gentleman who runs the antique shop down the street and I can see why! It's a beautiful, intimate restaurant with a unique menu and great food and drink options!

My absolute favorite restaurant in Galena! Limited but beautifully prepared items on the menu, outstanding desserts and always, always, elegant and attentive staff. The most romantic place I can think of, anywhere. Long live Fritz & Frites!

They had hands down one of the best dishes I ever ate. It was Poulet Roti and the chicken fell off the bone but the skin was still crisp. And the jus was amazing! Great atmosphere and service too.!

What a tremendous dining experience. The food was outstanding. I actually ate there twice in the same week (reservations both times). The Onion Gratinee was perfect from the first spoonful presented in a lovely tureen. The flavors just burst immediately I enjoyed the casoullet one...

My mom and I come to Galena for the Living Windows and Luminaria weekend, and we always book at least one dinner (if not two!) at Fritz & Frites. The cozy atmosphere, tasty food (get the schnitzel!), and wonderful service can't be topped. They do book up, so be sure to make a reservation. Thank you, Fritz & Frites, for all the warm memories and delicious dinners.

You medicine is here. Better make reservations and be on time or wait in the hall. Not Eisbein, but tender unpestered roast pork knuckle. Memorable beer list.

What F&F does well they do very well: schnitzel dishes, spatzle (tho the red cabbage is absurdly acidic, speaking as one who has eaten my weight in blaukraut) — and the pork hocks looked good, but there it ends. They have a very good beer...

We were really looking forward to dining here after enjoying a fantastic lunch here about ten years ago. And everything was great, especially the pate, but the steak was surprisingly sub-par. Would recommend the restaurant, but maybe have the chicken schnitzel or roast chicken and...

Galena IL—We celebrated Valentines weekend with a Friday evening to Fritz & Frites (a favorite of ours in Galena). We called for a reservation initially to believe we were too late. They called us back a few minutes later having made room for us. Now that’s great management. Our waitress (I apologize I don’t recall her name) was simply FANTASTIC, a seasoned pro with a fun personality, quick wit, and extremely knowledge of the ingredients of their entrees. She was able to offer great options to those with food sensitives, providing confidence she knew what she was suggesting. The meals were beyond delicious, plentiful, with picturesque presentation. The desserts were so huge I took it with us, it wasn’t till I opened the bag that we discovered our server left a witty note on the carrier that made us all laugh. Search no more, if you want great food, professional service, and great value — plan a visit to Fritz and Frites in Galena!

Excellent food and service. Sauerbraten as good as any back we had in our vist to Germany. The prune dessert we heard about was every bit as good as described.

Lovely family-owned restaurant with a menu reminiscent of Alsace. Charming decor and excellent service. The food is quite authentic. It’s a nice change from the typical Galena fare. I would definitely return
