My husband and I had such a wonderful time at From Scratch. The space is cozy and we had an excellent culinary experience. We ordered the arancini as an appetizer, a lasagna and truffle cream rigatoni and a tiramisu. All the ingredients were fresh and truly felt homemade. We got to see our tiramisu get assembled right in front of us and the cream was made fresh on the spot. It was incredible and delicious. The family who owns the establishment was also so kind and welcoming. Highly recommend. One of the best restaurants in NJ for sure!

I went there twice. The second time the food (pasta) was really not good. Came out lukewarm, pasta is TOO Al Dente, Carbonera sauce is too little and too thick and doesn't taste that good. I will not go back to this place again.

My visit to From Scratch restaurant in Ridgewood was a delightful experience marked by wonderful hospitality. The servers were exceptionally kind and courteous, making me feel welcomed and well-cared for. The food was excellent, as always. I had the carbonara, which is my classic go-to dish at From Scratch, though I occasionally opt for the lasagna. Filippo was incredibly helpful in my decision-making process and consistently checked to ensure all my needs were met. This level of service truly enhanced my dining experience.

Have you ever heard the phrase “the customer is always right”? Not at From Scratch. At From Scratch Roberto (the host) is always right! A week ago I called to place a reservation for tonight at 8pm and received confirmation from Roberto that 8pm was available and the reservation was made. While on the phone Roberto was very disrespectful and acted like he didn’t even care if we dined there or not. Already off to a bad start. He asked for a card to have on file in case we didn’t show up and I had to ask what the potential charge per person would be since he did not offer that information. It was $25 per person. Today me and my siblings who were supposed to go to dinner together showed up at from scratch at 8pm per our reservation timing. Roberto was very rude as is his nature and claimed that my reservation was at 6pm and told me to go eat somewhere else. Clearly Roberto needs to get his hearing checked because I most definitely asked for 8pm over the phone. He did not try to offer me anything for his mistake and didn’t even admit to his mistake he just told me I was wrong. On top of that, he charged my card for missing the 6pm reservation that I obviously missed because my real reservation was at 8pm and he would have let that charge stand had I not demanded my refund. Terrible customer service. Terrible Roberto. Heard he’s been just as rude to other customers as well. Don’t come here if you want to be treated with respect and potentially ripped off for missing a phantom reservation. This last part is strictly for Roberto. Roberto - please step down as host of this establishment and make a public announcment stating your resignation. The people deserve better. Ridgewood deserves better. Forfeit your host status and allow more capable hands to guide From Scratch’s reservation book. If I see your announcment in the Bergen Record I will consider dining at From Scratch in the future but only then. Also updating this review because it doesn’t look like google will let me reply to the business owner. I agree the hearing aid part was uncalled for and I apologize. I have removed that from the review. HOWEVER, we were NEVER offered a gift card at any point in time to reconcile the misunderstanding on their part and had to ASK for a refund for the reservation they thought we missed. We did not leave quickly and tried to get something out of the host and were turned away and told to eat somewhere else because there were no tables for us. The fact that they lied in thier reply is what is appalling to me. I don’t want their gift card because I’m sure that was an empty offer anyway.

This is my first time ordering from this restaurant. I had high expectations after seeing the photos online of the various meals. And although the food tastes fine, I am very disappointed in the price versus meal size. I ordered walnut ravioli entre and the meatball appetizer, with a hefty price of $28 and $18 I was expecting a decent portion size. When i received the meal to go I noticed now little food I have received. After comparing to the online photos I feel like I was misled.

This was an 85 dollar order from Uber Eats. Shame on the owners. I will not call them as I know of their pure hubris. For 30 dollars, we received a 4x4 inch piece of cacio de pepe lasagna with the ends dried out and it was a SALT LICK. No BREAD even though we asked for it. Anyone who can sleep at night delivering such substandard food is greedy. I would never order from here or walk in to that pretentious restaurant. I am sorry I was a patron of this business!!!!!! Don’t make my mistake.

The Meatballs Cacio & Pepe was an outstanding app with the lemon zest in the Mortadella sauce. The Gricia and the Amatriciana Rigatoni was off the charts delish!! The awesome Tiramisu was prepared fresh for us, sooo gooood! The Family owned biz brought Rome to us and was so knowledgeable and passionate about their heritage and menu. Definitely will be returning!!

If fresh authentic homemade pasta is what you crave, this is the place to go. Food is delicious and of high quality. You can taste that everything is authenticly Italian homemade with love and care. It's a limited menu but that is how they can put out such high quality. Prices are not cheap but worth it for the quality and execution. It's a small place with only few tables but we went for lunch and not a problem getting a table. BTW, it's a BYOB

Hands down one of the best pasta shops we’ve been to that served authentic homemade pasta. For a tiny restaurant their food packs a huge punch. Our server was attentive (a little quiet) but was great overall. The restaurant only has about 10 tables (if that), so it’s very intimate, and is a BYOB which is a plus. From the appetizer to the entree, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. APPETIZER: 1. Burrata | Rating: 5/5 - rich and creamy with delicious crunchy croutons ENTREE: 1. [Special of the Day] Porcini Mushroom Raviolis | Rating: 5/5 - decadent, melted in your mouth raviolis. I wish there were more! The sauce was light and airy and had great flavor 2. Spicy Pasta (we don’t remember the name but it was to die for) | Rating: 5/5 3. Carbonara | Rating: 5/5 - light and creamy. The crispy guanciale was the perfect topping to the pasta. DESSERT: - we unfortunately didn’t have dessert (they were out of the apple tart I think it was) and we all wanted to get that. We had saw other tables that ordered desserts and they looked fabulous. Overall, we’ll be back. The food was fresh, made to order, and delicious. The portions aren’t huge (like nothing to take home) but you don’t feel like you overate. Are the prices high - yes, but you’re paying for homemade, authentic pasta. With the amount of work that went into each dish, the prices are justified. Next time we hope to try the desserts!

I’ve been wanting to try out From Scratch for a very long time and was excited when I got a reservation at 8pm. We arrived on time and ordered all our food at once since we were hungry. We started off with the focaccia and for entrees each had a pasta: cacio e Pepe and carbona pasta. The food was extremely delicious, usually I have leftovers but we both cleaned our plates. The issue I had is the appetizer came at 8:30p and our entree came at 8:59p. They close at 9pm. Of course we are going to need time to eat our dinner. The owner here was SO RUDE because he wanted to go home, even though it wasn’t our fault our meal came a whole hour after ordering. He kept telling the server to hand us our check / speed up the process, he sat at the empty table next to us, and was just trying to get us to hurry up and leave. It’s one thing to have amazing food but to treat your guests rudely instead of kindly letting us know that we need to leave is a problem on poor management. This would have been a place I would have shared with my family and friends and even come back to, but there are other places with the same quality of food and kinder management that I will take my business to.

Absolutely delicious, like being in Rome. This is truly ITALIAN cuisine, not Italian-American food. We started with the Focaccia de Recco con Speck. The Focaccia was warm and chewy with a buttery, sweet finish from the stracchino. It was the perfect match for the rich flavor of the prosciutto. Next was the Lasagna alla Bolognese...there are not words...squisito!! We also had the Rigatoni alla Gricia, and shared an order of the Branzino, both of which were a treat for the mouth and stomach...ottimo! Still, the Lasagna is not to be missed! We finished with the Ricotta and Nutella Pie and the Homemade Apple Tarte, both of which had rich homemade flavors, but with a bit of sophistication...e.g. the layer of lemon custard in the apple tart; unexpected yet the perfect addition. The only thing missing, (and I'm just being picky here) was a bit of lemon rind to accompany the expresso, other than that, this was the perfect meal. BYOB, so splurge on a good super Tuscan and have an amazing dinner.

The focaccia w speck app was different but excellent, I had the papadelle alla cacciatora, loved it. My wife had the rigatoni alla carbonara, she liked it as well, loves al dente. The dessert topped it off, ricotta and Nutella pie, perfectly balanced. Only complaint was it came out a little slow, but the owner talked to us and apologized, that service attention greatly appreciated. Highly recommended if you love homemade pasta.

Looks so small and unimportant but boy are you in for a surprise! Food is DELICIOUS!!! Any dish we tried was absolutely amazing!!! The best one for me and others that tried my dish.. and few did.. was finger-licking best, white truffle lasagna! Strabiliante. The best Italian food I have ever had. The chef Claudia is absolutely brilliant. The Lasagna alla Bolognese was perfection, as was the Ricotta and Nutella pie. Let me just say, wow! I ordered the gricia, a pasta dish with cacio e Pepe sauce and guanciale on top and it blew me away! The ambience was quiet and warm, and you felt like you were the only ones there which is great for a date. The service was that of a Michelin star restaurant. They gave us bread and oil in the beginning which was a nice touch. They also went ahead and put flowers on our table which made my date super happy. Overall, I’m very impressed with this place. There are true authentic Italian dishes here and it took me back to when I was in Rome eating cacio e Pepe. Does not compare to these other restaurants that claim they are “authentic Italian.” Highly recommend. (Ps all dishes and recipes are homemade by the chef and owner)

This humble, unassuming eatery serves up the most mouthwatering, fresh and transcending Italian dishes, that it sets the bar head and shoulders above the norm. Everything pictured was outstanding! From the focaccia di recca con speck, tonnarelli cacio e pepe and the delicious ricotta Nutella pie, a “Must have” topped off with two heart shortbread cookies from Chef Claudia herself. You could taste in every dish prepared the love and passion put into it. Lastly, the service was warm, genuine and attentive. DO NOT PASS From Scratch up. Note to bring your own wine as only Italian soft drinks are served. Make it next on your list, I know I’ll definitely be back and soon.

We had high hopes for this place. We sat down, and within 10 minutes the waiter had come to our table 3 times trying to take our order. It was very aggressive. When we placed our order we tried to place our appetizer order first because the meal was going so fast and they refused to take our appetizer order without our entrée. We were done in an hour and five minutes. it wasn’t like it was incredibly packed. There were two empty tables. Unfortunately a very intense atmosphere. I cannot 100% blame our server as whoever was the manager was pushing him to take our order quickly. The food was good but the entrées were also very small for the price. We will try somewhere else next time.

The food here is incredible. The care and creativity which Claudia takes in her creations is genuine and masterful. Her and her husband, Roberto, are truly dedicated artisans. The menu rotates often to keep the selection new and adventurous. Claudia uses a wide variety of ingredients, many of which you may have never had. The staff is impeccable in their knowledge of the dishes and their presentation of the service. If there is ANYWHERE in the North Jersey area you go to eat, go here. You must make reservations, so don’t forget to plan ahead and bring a bottle of wine with you. Thank you Claudia, Roberto and all the staff at From Scratch!

Food was delicious, though my dish could have used a side vegetable. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Tiramisu was very good. Service was very attentive and excellent. The restaurant unfortunately was very very tiny and due to the layout wasn't very homey. For a restaurant with a price point of $230 dinner for 3 I'd expect table cloths. It was a very casual feel for such an expensive place. Would definitely recommend though.

Cute little Italian spot, we came across while visiting one of our favorite dessert places a few doors away. The food had great flavor, seems they change the menu weekly, which is great to keep a nice variety and it's a BYOB, which is fantastic. Their was only 1 waitress, which is understandable since it's a very small location, but she would seem rushed or flustered at times to stay on top of everything. Everyone was very friendly! The only issue I had was that the salmon was supposed to be served with a SIDE of mashed, it was more like a garnish. When you looked under the salmon, there were no potatoes. When we asked for more, we were told they were all out, so we asked for them to accommodate a different side, which they did but then charged $8 for it even though they didn't give an actual side. Overall, I would def eat there again.

When I sit down for a meal at From Scratch, I am transported to Claudia’s kitchen, where every dish feels as if it were conceived just for me and my table. Whether it’s the exceptional Liguria pasta featuring her grandmother’s signature pesto recipe, the rich and silky Carbonara, the light and crispy Pinsa, the always satisfying seasonal Dinner Special, or one of her light and delicious homemade dessert creations, I am left in awe of the level of flavor, integrity of ingredients, and degree of execution that each dish presents. You need not don your finest sports coat or your fanciest dress to enter; simply bring an appetite and your friends and family and you will be blown away by the flavors and textures that your mouth, taste buds, and palate experience. You will be welcomed with open arms as you dine at this truly family run restaurant/kitchen that is unlike any other. Please understand if you are a shrimp parmesan and meatball hero aficionado, this may not meet your expectation. If you frequent Olive Garden and enjoy processed, emotionless food, the same can be said. I imagine that the very few negative reviews are from diners of that ilk. This is not the generic, American-Italian food you might have grown up with here in the States. Instead, it is authentic and superior. If you are a discerning consumer of high-quality, passionate, satisfying Roman fare, you must make a reservation today! I can’t express enough positivity about From Scratch, Claudia, Roberto, Filippo, Caterina, and every member of their extended family/staff. They are the best!

Had to ask for bread twice, any Italian restaurant shouldn't have to ask. We were brought four super small pieces of focaccia, laughable. Both the Carbonara and Amatriciana were salty! i love salt but this was almost inedible, not just mine but all of us said too much salt. Not sure if they over salted the water or pasta dough or went too heavy w the pecorino. I get the idea of al dente when dealing with fresh pasta but the pasta needed another minute or two in the water. Our entire party was disappointed.

If you are looking for Fettuccine Alfredo and chicken Parmesan this is not the place. Definitely a real and original Italian recipes food! Amazing service and the owners Roberto e Claudia very friendly and gentle. The best pasta alla carbonara that I ate here in America. If you want a real Italian food experience this is the right place. I really recommend this place for a real Italian experience.

Claudia is a gem. The food here is to die for and never disappoints. I highly recommend this place to everyone who asks for recommendations in Ridgewood. All of the pasta is wonderful and I can’t wait to go back again. I do miss their pinsa however - I hope one day it can come back because it was also incredible.

It was very much looking forward to eating Russia here as I heard positive feedback. To say I was disappointed was an understatement. The pizza tasted like glorified frozen pizza and the sauce was quite flavorless although the texture of the pasta was OK. We had a gift certificate and they refused to allow us to put the tip on the gift certificate even though cash was paid for it. This will be the first and last time I dine there as it was nothing special

We've always ordered from and gone to "from scratch" so we decided to have them help us host a dinner party with 8 of our friends and let me just say it was an absolutely amazing experience. Not only was the food as tasty as always, the timing and course selection was perfect. Claudia the chef/owner is so talented and incredibly friendly and helpful, she also offered to help us select wines to pair with the food we chose. If you're looking to host a dinner party we'd highly recommend doing this, our guests are still talking about how great the night was. Thanks FS, it was spectacular, bravo.. she even printed out little menus for our guests and the cleanup was minimal.. couldn't recommend more highly.

My company hosted a private event at From Scratch and the overall experience was excellent! The food, a five course home-cooked Italian meal, was absolutely delicious. Each course somehow managed to outdo the last. The staff was incredible. We met ahead of time to discuss the menu options and they definitely delivered and exceeded expectations. I would highly recommend the restaurant for both a regular night out or for a private event! You will not leave disappointed! 5 stars all around!

Before writing this review I made sure to go to the restaurant twice in the span of a 3 week period to get this right.(in short…it was that good) Here we go. This is what a dining experience should be. The recipes, ingredients, care, and love could be felt in the cuisine in its entirety. The first experience was a pre-fix menu which I’m not certain is still offered but really hit the ball out of the park so to speak (10 out of 10) but for this experience I’ll reference my most recent visit. My wife and I came to the village of Ridgewood on an ever so busy Saturday night. We entered this very quaint establishment. It’s a beautiful layout, open kitchen design, and immaculately clean. We were sat towards the end of the restaurant and luckily for me next to the kitchen to get a sneak of the magic. Our meal started with arancini siciliani, the Sicilian rice balls. The flavor was very fitting and matched perfectly with the vinaigrette I believe it was placed on. We then ordered the Pinsa Brie with mozzarella and smoked prosciutto…whoa! The texture of the dough, the quality of the mozzarella and dab of balsamic were perfectly placed. Wish I ordered two (but I’ll be back) Our main came and I chose the fettuccine alla bolognese. Interesting thing was I was eyeing the kitchen and (assuming) saw the chef pull the fettuccine right before it arrived on my plate. The flavors were so hearty, seasoned to perfection, and pasta very fresh. It brought me right to a village in Italy. For desserts I had the Nutella crumb cake and it was rich, appropriately flaky, and garnished perfectly on the plate. This has been one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. You can get a sense that the chef, family, and workers are going above and beyond to craft what each diner is eating…and you can taste it in every bite. This is a 5 out of 5 on here and a 10 out of 10 in my book. Looking forward to dining again.

Amazing, amazing first experience with these delightful pinsas! The quality of the ingredients far outweighs anything else locally that you might compare these to. It isn’t pizza, or flatbread. I honestly have to read more about these, however just one is large enough for 2 people. Fantastic choices. Go on the website and look at the pics!
