This place is no good anymore. Chicken tasted very salty to cover old meats. I got sick. Never again. I'm not sure the management changed but never again.

This restaurant came strongly recommended by a friend, but it appears from other reviews that a lot changed with management this Summer (2024). We stopped in for lunch at the end of July and found most tables vacant but dirty, the service slow, and the food good. They do have a couple large round tables that could seat 7-9 comfortably, but we only had 4 in our party, so we chose a smaller table—the only one of about six such tables that seemed clean. They serve on nice plates—not infant-friendly—but they do have high chairs. The decor was a mix of old rave reviews on one wall, and what seemed like special event decor in the back. We did enjoy the food: Their orange chicken is spicy, but they were able to cater to a request for it not to be prepared spicy; we liked the result, and they didn't nickle-and-dime us for substitutions into their lunch special. They even included some free spring rolls because our order was over $30. We left a large mess because we had an infant with us, so we tried to tip well, rounding $38.45 ($6 appetizer, 3× $10 lunch specials, and $2.65 tax) up to $50 (about 30%, more than any of the tips recommended by their register).

This place use to be THE BEST! We tried the food several times once the new owners took over, and it was meh for the price that you pay. We stopped going until today, when my rare craving of Chinese food struck. I figured it had been long enough that we could see if the meh experience was just from the initial transition in ownership. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be better. The to-go portions are small for what you pay for Our fish was salty and relatively bland. Our “crispy” eggplant was not crispy by any means. Instead they were sprinkled with some “crispy “ pieces. The orange chicken sauce was almost gelatinous, like it was jarred/old. The prior owners really set the bar high. Such a shame that a wonderful authentic restaurant is no longer in the neighborhood and now I am on the hunt for a new one. Side note. Do not walk in the back door and down the long hall. The smell of moth balls and sewage are certainly not appealing and will make you question your decision in eating there.

Grace Garden used to be the best Chinese food in the area, reminded me of living in China. The old owners left and new owners took over, since then it's been constantly downhill.

Great food. Generous portions. Super polite and attentive staff. Very small, quaint atmosphere, like you were at a friends place for dinner. Hunan sauce is fantastic. Sesame chicken was very good. Egg drop and wonton soup were also top notch. We had no expectations going in and were pleasantly surprised.

Me and my family have been coming here for over a year and have always enjoyed the amazing food. As others have mentioned there is new management and it just simply not the same. We ordered the pork fried rice which tasted burnt and was very bland. We also ordered the general tso’s chicken which also lacked flavor. We are so disappointed and unfortunately will not be back here.

Update: June 2024 As others have noted, the management has changed once again. Sadly, now the restaurant is not nearly what it used to be. Gone is the authentic Chinese menu that drew us and so many others to this hole in the wall spot. That is to be expected as owners and chefs come and go. I wish the former well in their retirement. Unfortunately, the food offerings are now just the typical Americanized Chinese dishes common to any other take-out. But the prices remain what they used to be before the change. Imagine my son's surprise when he paid twice the average for a General Tso's Chicken expecting a generous helping of big tender pieces of chicken in a tasty house-made glaze, and instead finding a meager portion of overly breaded chicken bits drenched in a thick syrup pre-made sauce. It's almost a crime that they have kept the name, and on the wall the accolades and newspaper clippings earned by the original owners. Nothing here is deserving of that now. A complete name change and makeover would have been more appropriate, and maybe even appreciated by the former patrons who are quickly making their feelings known. I wish the new owners the best of luck in their new business model, but they have big shoes to fill and a long way to go to get me to return again. ---------- This has been our go-to Chinese restaurant in the Odenton area for many years. You can find them reviewed in many forums, including Zagat, and they do not disappoint. Recently, the owners have changed and with them so has the menu and food. There are still two menus, the typical American Chinese which now also features sushi, and the authentic Chinese menu which is unfortunately now a lot smaller. The food quality is still overall good, but not all dishes remain the same. For examples, the Schezuan Pork Belly still has the same salty spicy flavor, but is not as crisp or smokey and the Yang Chow Fried Rice is drier and uses the typical roasted pork instead of a nice salty ham. The interior is still the same small space, but the new owners have spruced it up with nicer table settings. The new staff themselves are friendly enough, and seem optimistic and energetic about their business. Although the food is not the same, it is still good and the special Chinese menu still has many items worth trying. I still recommend them over most of the usual take-out only establishment s, so give them a try!

New owners, same name. Such a sharp decline in quality. The chicken and broccoli in garlic sauce was hardly edible. It wasn't even sauce it was more like broth. Cantonese menu is gone, such a waste of an amazing restaurant. They even keep the old owners news paper clippings and reviews on the wall, that's not fooling anyone. Just upsetting to see it go so steeply downhill.

I noticed that Grace Garden was on Door Dash, which was extremely heartbreaking and concerning. Me and my wife have been go there for the past 11 years and they have never been on the delivery service. My concern with them being on Door Dash was cemented when I got home and saw the food. The food looks and tastes horribly bland. They aren't using as many fresh ingredients and just using bulk store bought food. This was my RELIABLE Chinese restaurant with amazing food for the past TWELVE YEARS! Seems the new management wants to turn a once amazing restaurant into a mini Panda Express. I am incredibly saddened by this.

The restaurant has just (May 2024) changed management. It also changed its menu, removing most of our favorite dishes (the fish noodles, Szechuan pork belly with leeks and bell peppers, basil chicken, and many others). We got takeout for Mother's Day, as my wife requested. The new dishes seem much more Americanized and, most importantly, less tasty. This is a shame; I've been a loyal customer for 15 years, but won't be patronizing it again. I do hope that the previous manager--a very nice older lady--enjoys her retirement; she will be missed.

4.5/5. Nothing too fancy, just good take-out Chinese. I had the chicken broccoli and chicken lo mien with an order of spring rolls (2). Best I've had in the area so far. Authentic Chinese food, best dishes: Taiwan Fish, Crispy Aromatic Chicken, basil chicken, Szechuan braised beef/fish all amazing. JAN23: Taiwan, fish and aromatic chicken were amazing as usual, we also got young chow wonton soup, spicy green beans and mixed seafood in XO sauce. Didn't actually care for the XO sauce. It was a little sweet and did not have as much flavor as the Taiwan fish for example and it's a bit more expensive. AUG20: New owner & cook, but I'm still finding plenty of fantastic authentic Chinese options. Taiwan fish is now slightly better than before & their braised fish (or pork) are still to die for. I avoid their scallops dishes. Be aware most of the Chinese menu are large dinner size portions meant to serve two people, so they are more pricey, but the best outside of DC.

This place is a hidden gem. It may not look like much from the outside or the inside for that matter, but damn is the food outstanding. They have seemingly two menus, one that caters to the Chinese American dishes and one that has authentic Chinese dishes. We ordered exclusively from the authentic Chinese menu and it was everything I was hoping it would be. I've been to a lot of Chinese places that have authentic Chinese dishes but very few do it well, this place does it great. This place had hardly anyone in when we went which was shocking with how good the food is. This place should be packed with food like this. Remember in the early 90's when the Hunan Manor in Columbia was insanely good, then just average, then it got good again....then it got and stayed really bad? Well, Grace Garden is better than Hunan Manor ever was, even when HM was at its best. Sorry Jessie Wong. You are a distant memory now that Grace Garden has graced us with the best Asian food in the Howard County region. Now - you don't get all the fancy schmancy ambience at Grace Garden (it's actually a hole in the wall), but don't let the sparse digs sway you. What it lacks in ambiance and charm, Grace Garden more than makes up for, in fantastic food! You'll get artfully prepared "Americanized" Chinese style dishes and even more importantly, a stunning array of deftly prepared traditional Eastern style dishes as well. The extensive menu includes; Seafood E-Fu Noodles, Crispy Eggplant, Vermicelli with Pork and Pepper, and Twice Cooked Pork to name just a few. If you know anything about really good Chinese food - you'll love it Grace Garden. UPDATE: It appears Grace Garden is now operating under new owners. Came here on a whim with a friend who said this place used to be good. Unfortunately, no mala here either, friends. Apparently, according to him, the menu had changed quite drastically since the last time he was there, probably due to change in ownership, but we made the best of it. The ladies behind the register were nice and made sure we saw the special menu. Make sure to order off the special menu if you want more authentic food. It was currently setup for takeout only, which was probably good as there was a not so great smell on the short hallway inside the restaurant that leads to the long hallway that goes to the parking lot out back. In any case, I was delighted to see Szechuan items on the special menu and ordered the following: -Szechuan Spicy Chicken -Szechuan Pork Belly (and Vegetable drunken noodle, which was actually pretty decent, but I'd probably just go next door if I only wanted Thai.) Both dishes had okay flavor, but no heat to either of them, even after confirming mala with the lady behind the register. My friend ended up with the Beef Chow Fun and he said it was okay, but nothing to return for. That's how I felt about my meal as well.

The food good and fresh. I haven't been here since I was on the army 2011. They are still as I remembered.

This might be one of the best Chinese restaurants in MD!! Everything is so delicious and always freshly made. Highly recommend trying the fish noodles, crispy eggplant, and Peking duck as they are all SO GOOD!! Portions are family style AND it’s BYOB! Couldn’t ask for anything more! 🤗

Can’t complain. Food was decent. It was prepared quickly and was ready for pickup when we got there. They were open on Christmas night. I’d probably go there again

Grace Garden is excellent. Don’t be fooled by the location. We had take-out and, despite a 20-minute drive home, it was excellent. Our next visit will be dine-in. The folks at Grace’s are very friendly and kind. They heard it was my daughters birthday and gave us an order of Chinese donuts, which are outstanding, sugar tossed goodness. Since our favorite Chinese restaurant, Court of Shanghai in Annapolis, closed we had searched for a new spot. We tried several places and they were just OK, but not great. Grace Garden is our new place. We had the pan fried dumplings, egg rolls, shrimp toast, hot and sour soup, chicken fried rice, beef flat rice noodle, and General Tso’s chicken - it was all delicious. The beef noodles were a new choice for us and were a big hit. One tip for all Chinese restaurants - always ask for the House mustard! The packet variety is an abomination. Grace Garden was more than happy to provide some. Get Outlook for iOS

Great hole in the wall spot. Nothing fancy but the staff and food were on point! Looks like a mom and pop run place, nothing fancy. But with that being said you sit down to hot tea and some pickled cabbage. There are two menu's, one with your regular American style Chinese and another Specials menu that is a little more authentic. We went with the Szechuan crispy squid, and the pork belly with mustard greens, off the specials menu.... Freaking good! Will def be going back. Shrimp toast wasn't the best, but the hot and sour soup was good.

Great price for lunch specials. Portion is enough for two. Not many tables. There are two more tables than appear in my photo.

It had been over a year since we ordered from Grace Garden, and there have been some menu changes. We used to order from the "authentic Chinese" menu (I can't recall if the other option was "American Chinese," or something like that). Now there are 3 menus: Chinese, Specials, and Japanese. Most of what we ordered was off of the Specials menu. Favorites: the spicy, garlic eggplant, Ma Pu Tofu (very spicy), and Szechuan string beans- all about the same as we remembered. Ordered something new, "Golden Pumpkin," (menu description: Crispy Fried Pumpkin Coated with Golden Salted Egg Yolk & Crispy Garlic). This was the only disappointment. The pumpkin itself was ok, but seemed to be overwhelmed by the thick coating of tempura batter (and was deep fried).

We went to Grace Garden on Christmas, as we traveled to meet family members, and didn't have a way to do the traditional dinner that day. What a wonderful surprise. All the positive reviews are spot-on. While we could see the usual foods catering to American tastes, we ordered from the Specials menu only. Each dish (Crispy Eggplant, Squid, Bok Choy, and four more) had a different sauce. The spices were wonderful in each case. We got the dishes one at a time, rather than all at once, and while that might be slow for some diners, it was perfect so that five of us could try the foods on their own merit. We appreciated the way the waiter took care of us by making sure glasses and rice bowls were always topped off. I would go back in a heartbeat!

My wife and I lived in China for 3 years. Since then we have scoured the Baltimore metro area for Chinese food that had some semblance of authenticity. We were regularly disappointed until we found Grace Garden. This is as close as it gets. We enjoyed the Ma po tofu and steamed dumplings. There were a bunch of other things being served at other tables that looked amazing that we'll try on a return visit. Go with a group so you can order more. Food is served traditional family style.

For my first visit I was pleased to see a comprehensive menu with numerous options. I ordered General Tso's chicken extra spicy with steamed rice. The texture was perfect and the mix of white and dark meat made the dish sublime. If I had one criticism it would me "more heat". Extra spicy was at the level I would consider normal. Other than that the dishes being served around me looked wonderful and you can eat family style here. I look forward to frequenting this establishment many more times in the future.

This hole in the wall restaurant serves unusually good Chinese dishes, including delicious soft fish noodles that I have rarely encountered anywhere else and a wonderful plate of scallops and shrimp with hot peppers.

First went to this place for their american Chinese food which was better than most. Went back tonight for their authentic Chinese menu which was outstanding. Served family style with a lazy Susan in the middle. Everything was delicious and the staff was friendly. Definitely worth the price and to call ahead for some of the more exotic dishes (2-3 days). The duck particularly was amazing. Definitely will go back as a group again!

Today, I had carry out from the Grace Garden Traditional Chinese menu, like I have once a month for years. For me it’s a 20-25 minute drive each way since I live in Columbia, so it takes some effort. I pass several Chinese Restaurants on the way to get there. The food was delicious, as usual! However, they informed me they were changing the menu to focus on Americanized Chinese and Sushi. Nooooo! That is an absolutely TERRIBLE idea. Their traditional Menu is the source of their notoriety, and it appears it’s going away. All my favorite food pictures have been taken down from the wall, but the hooks or holes In the wall are still conspicuous. It adds to the poor decor! If you aren’t continuing the Traditional menu I’ll go to some place closer. If the Owners are having business challenges, I strongly recommend spending a week cleaning the restaurant, the floors are terribly sticky and greasy, then investing in painting the restaurant, new ceiling, new carpet, new tables and chairs. To be clear, I would NEVER order sushi from your restaurant. Sushi is all about the cleanliness of everything, EVERYTHING! Currently your restaurant is not! If you don’t believe me, please visit the best rated Sushi Restaurants in Howard County: Sushi Sono and Sushi King; they are CLEAN!
