Well-stocked and dependable. Great place to buy Japanese grocery staples like miso as well as snacks. Small but has the essentials. Owner is bilingual and always happy to help you find something or offer product advice. So if you aren't sure what to get just ask.

Looks a real japanese supermarket, however their sushi was so fresh and delicious. It’s not that cheap, but worth it. There is no seat inside it. All menu should be taken out. Also they’re selling so many japanese groceries (sometimes korean’s too). And decent real japanese product with good price. I like this kind of small store.

I hadn't been to this Market since precovid. It was great to visit.The Management/Owners and front staff were helpful and friendly. Very accommodating. There was an hour wait for the sushi order but there are many things to do in Bethesda so we didn't mind. The sushi is worth waiting for, so if you are hungry call ahead. I love there are so many authentic items in this shop. The staff is helpful and assist in finding items or questions about products. This is a jewel of a market in Bethesda.

I REALLY wanted to try this place! I live around the corner and tried to get sushi carry out 3 times. They either didn't answer the phone or stopped serving sushi 2 hours before closing. The last time I went in and they had stopped taking orders about 2.5 hours before closing, they told me to call. But when I did call (several times) no one answered. They said they are too busy! If you have been a customer for part of their 30 years, they probably treat you better, but for us newcomers, forget it. Such a hassle and I heard them say that they don't want/need new customers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I went in to order the daily sushi special. There was no wait, so it took around 15 minutes to prepare. There's enough groceries, snacks, and daily goods to shop for while you wait. All of the workers were very nice. The daily special was reasonably priced ($16 for about 20 pieces) and tasted better than most sushi places in DC.

Go no further for the best sushi in Bethesda. No gimmicky rolls with over-powering toppings or sauces, or outrageously large rolls that no one can swallow. Just good old authentic Japanese cuisine freshly made to order. Hinata is about well- balanced (aka not overly seasoned) sushi rice and really fresh fish made with care. It’s about celebrating one’s pride of one’s 出身 and share that love. If you want a real taste of Japan in Bethesda, this is the place to go. You can also pick up some amazing Japanese snacks while you’re there!

We get sashimi fish here in blocks. Best fish ever. We routinely spend more than 100 when we go from assundries. It is better than maruichi, but smaller selection of things. Thus has been our goto for groceries not found in hmart for 7 or more years. Price is based on grocery bill, not cost of sushi, which is very affordable and great. Call ahead for takeout sushi

It's carry out only, but the atmosphere is very good. They have a market with a lot of great hard to find items. Food is great, and it's very popular so order early.

Good but nothing exceptional and overpriced. California rolls are teeny tiny—and the nigiri portions are on the smaller side as well. Since moving to the area, I’ve been looking for a sushi place comparable to what I could get in SF Bay area or in Portland OR. Based on the other reviews I had high hopes for this place. Alas the search continues. What I got in Cleveland OH is superior to this place🫤

We have been shopping at Hinata for 4+yrs. and it is the best place to find your must-haves of Japanese grocery! The owners are absolutely wonderful, they are very neighborly and welcoming, and always helpful to make suggestions when you are looking for specific items. They continue to stock specific items that I love and also suggest new alternatives when I’d like to try something new. The sushi is also delicious! I lived in Japan many years ago, Hinata not only fills that void, but it is also a wonderful little nook in Bethesda that is so much more.

It is a small family business. The owner is so kind and friendly. The rolls I ordered were delicious. I would go again. While I wait for the order, there were many products to browse. They carry good Japanese drinks. Personally, I was super excited to see dango!

We were too anxious to eat the sashimi and forgot to take a photos. Every piece of sashimi were super fresh and delicious. We ordered sashimi deluxe and added scallops and another fish as extra. Highly recommend the scallop sashimi, creamy! Will come back to order more.

The sushi is really fantastic. Be prepared to wait a bit if you are planning to order in person. So, it’s best to call ahead, as it’s a small shop with limited throughput. The sushi is great though.

Stopped by very randomly on a Saturday afternoon. All other stores/restraurants look half-dead, this place lit up and immediately knocked out of the park. The lady (owner?) was so passionate and helpful. After mopping the floor, she introduced me to their variety of miso from the fridge and suggested one that seems the best fit. They even have salted cherry blossom! What a nice surprise after a post-peak cherry blossom trip in DC! Lady reminded me of my mom/friendly neighbor back home - she rocks! They were done with the sushi orders for the day, but I will definitely stop by next time and try out other things from this hidden gem. On my way back home I kept thinking about this heartwarming shop and its lovely people. It has nothing to do with where you come from, what accent you carry, or what you have to offer. The store is there to connect people with food. And that's all that matters.

Such a sweet lady at the counter. She noticed I was looking for something and asked what. I said natto and she offered to call me the next day when they get their next shipment and hold onto some packs of it for me. I felt like I was back in Japan again with that level of hospitality. Also I was ecstatic when I was finally able to have some natto which is hard to find where I’m from.

Small cozy Japanese grocery store with Sushi carry out menu. Be aware that the store is open until 7pm, but you can only order sushi before 3:30pm. Good sushi but the portion is on the small side for some of the rolls.

We love stocking up on Japanese rice, soups, snacks & more at Hinata. It's almost like being in a family business in Japan, & the owner is always pleasant & helpful in either English or Japanese. I think it's her husband running the small sushi counter & there are customers (to go) whenever we shop. Parking at a reasonable rate (or even free) is in the city garage 2 doors away. We love this store!

If you have ever lived/visited Japan and want authentic no frills excellent quality sashimi this is the place for you. We have been to at least a dozen other places in the area before discovering this gem and this is by far the best.

The most authentic sushi in all of Bethesda. Hinata is a wonderful, hidden gem of a spot for real, true-to-cuisine Japanese food and grocery. I actually stumbled upon this place walking my dog and it soon became a routine stop for us when we lived in downtown Bethesda. I would get their sushi specials along with some of my favorite Japanese grocery items reminiscent of my time working in Japan. The proprietor is very kind and friendly. She would take my order and would bring it outside to me as my dog and I waited for the food. Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi or any Japanese food items. Five stars all-around!

You have to call an order ahead at least 45 min. Hands down best sushi in Bethesda! I wouldn't and don't go anywhere else for my sushi cravings.

Really nice place, a good variety of japanese drinks, frozen food and treats. You can also carry out the day before or same day but an hour and a half before. Will come back soon

This place is an amazing hidden gem in Bethesda. Haven’t tried their sushi yet (have heard many great things about it) but their convenient store is amazing. They have almost everything you will ever need for Japanese food (both cooking materials and snack). Everything they sell are really authentic and not pricey at all. A must go for Japanese food lovers.

This is such a special Bethesda institution! The staff is so kind and welcoming. The selection of goods is amazing, and almost everything is affordable. The sushi is delicious! It feels a bit as if we've visited Japan for a few minutes when we're there. We visit frequently and have never had a bad experience. Many Japanese (and other Asian) people shop there, which is the true test of authenticity and quality. Hinata gets an A plus from us.

This is probably one of a handful of local "real" japanese owned and run sushi spots in the entire region. This kind of quaint small cramped store with a sushi counter in the back is an amazing small gem in the community. The only thing it can be compared to are shops on the west coast and NYC. Definitely worth a visit if you want a taste of what this food is supposed to taste like.

The sushi is reasonably priced and delicious. During the pandemic, they've got a bottle of hand sanitizer and some disposable gloves at the door. I'm new to the Bethesda area, and I've definitely found my sushi place!

What a hidden jem! Great sushi and a ton of Japanese grocery items. The owners are super friendly and happy to answer any questions you might have about their products (offer recommendations). Most of their items also have English translations on the back (including nutritional information) which is super helpful.

I visited the restaurant because of its ratings and listing on several “Best Of” articles. It a small restaurant in the back of a busy market. I only ordered 4 items but there was a 45-minute wait because of a previous large order. The sushi is fresh and very tasty. I’d say order ahead if you can. Side note: if you want to practice some Japanese dishes, this is the spot to find many ingredients.

A hole in the wall on st elm. Not many know it's there but being able to get specialty Asian ingredients, a quick, light lunch, and the quiet space are perfect for midday breaks.

Nice little Japanese store with a wide variety of items we miss from Japan. It's a small store, but there is a lot packed in there. We only had time to grab a couple of pieces of nigiri sushi but they were good. It's the States so not super fresh, but still way better then the funky stuff you get at random "hibachi" restaurants in NoVa. We walked from our hotel but noticed a public parking garage right down the street from the store.

I stopped by this past Saturday to order sushi to go. Good prices for sushi. Order a California roll with imitation crab--the real crabmeat was a little bland. It was fairly busy with patrons buying groceries and such. It only took 15 minutes to complete my order. Parking is a premium around 2pm. Someone came in assuming a large order they phoned in was ready. Word to the wise: Call ahead and confirm your order is ready.

I wish they had more produce and meat/seafood items but they have a lot of snacks, cooking stuff, and non perishable food, as well as some Frozen stuff. It's a great neighborhood Japanese market! Fun shop for kids obsessed with Japanese snacks (my daughter) and adults looking for good selection of quality Japanese staple ingredients. Staff is exceptionally helpful. And, delicious sushi is best bargain in town!

Good sushi and great to be able to get asian food without having to drive. I come here pretty often to pick up things i need but don't have time to drive out to H-mart for. Its great for Japanese stuff like Kombu. I often buy udon noodles and kombu/dashi to make a quick udon at home. It's WAY too small though. Only one person fits in an aisle and if people are in all 3 aisles you can't really get in or out of the place.

The japanese grocery selection alone is why I come here! And it's just a little bit closer and cheaper than Maruichi for me. My only complaint is that they need a bigger location; can't have more than one person in the aisle when you're looking through everything.

This is the only place near the Bethesda metro to carry Asian products. Yes, you can drive 20 minutes to get to H-mart or Great Wall, but you can also walk 10 minutes or drive for a few to get the Hinata, which would carry most Asian products you would need to make Japanese or Chinese dishes. Because the store is small, don't expect them to have everything, just everything that the nearby Safeway and Trader Joe's don't carry.

Love this place. Came here with a Japanese colleague who works in Bethesda but had never heard about it. They were ecstatic at finding some of the things on the shelves that they have difficulty finding anywhere. I love the sushi specials for lunch and have ordered take out for a party and it was amazing.

This place is a gem. It's a tiny Japanese grocery store run by a friendly expat couple. The grocery has all the dry-good basics, and in summer, they even have some vegetables that you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere in the USA short of the biggest Japanese stores in the Bay Area, NJ, or the Puget Sound (think kinome –the shoot of the Szechuan pepper– or mitsuba, the Japanese herb that is essential for a proper oyakodon). But what is great is that they reliably supply very good to excellent sashimi-grade fish and shellfish. The selection is not always that broad, but you can assemble a very respectable sashimi dinner by shopping here. They also have a sushi eat-in/take-out service, which provides sushi that is as good as anything else in Bethesda (but do consider Matsuba, around the corner). If you want to secure fish, it's best to order it a few days in advance.
