OMG! Thank God this place is in the middle of Indiana. I would be poor and fat if it were any closer. Wagyu is as good as advertised, maybe better. The friendliness of staff spectacular and its true farm to table. A great experience!

This is a neat place with a nice setting and a good wait staff. The food was really good, and the setting is pretty unique. The one complaint we had was that the room was really hollow sounding and made it hard to hear conversation because of the echoing. Overall, this was a good place to visit.

TIP BEFORE YOU DINE THERE IF YOU ORDER WAGYU 17 OUNCES RIBEYE: $255.00. Please read the fine print! On the menu: $75.00 to $95.00 PER 5 ounces. The waitress will tell you what the specials are but you must ask the waitress what the price would be. The ribeye was tough and I encouraged my husband to return it but he did not want to wait another 40 minutes to get his main entree again. My stuffed trout was excellent. I did call later and spoke to the manager and since we paid cash, she offered to reimburse some of the check but I declined because I will not support this establishment.

We had Mothers Day Brunch reservations here and had a great time. The food was hot and made to order. They did have a fixed menu, but they still offered a great variety. The service was friendly and professional. The atmosphere is unique. We were seated next to a large bar and an old bank vault. There was also a green house dining area. We will definitely have to be back to experience that dining room. The restroom was clean and spacious.

Went for a birthday dinner to have a nice steak. My wife and I both had the filet mignon. Very tough and dry. Better quality steak can be had at logans or Texas roadhouse for 1/4 of the price. My wife informed the waitress of an allergy to onions and to our surprise, not only was there onions on the plate with the vegetables, there was also onion in the potatoe cake. Bad experience. Bad food. Don't waste your time or money here.

First time eating here with my girlfriend. We were excited to try because we both love Wagyu. I ordered the 5 oz filet and she ordered the 5 oz Ribeye. I was served a New York Strip instead of a filet. Didn’t say anything to the staff because we had after dinner plans with friends and had already waited a long time for our food to come out. Neither one of us were impressed with the quality of our steaks. Normally when we eat Wagyu steak it’s the most tender and buttery steak compared to other breeds. This Wagyu was tough. Tougher than the steak we buy at the grocery store. And it costs us over $200. I was waiting for someone to jump out and tell us we got punked. Sadly, we won’t be back.

Wonderful experience, and that’s what it is, a true dining experience! The food was fantastic and the service was superb. Take your time and enjoy the food, atmosphere, and art. Do not expect this to be like other “high volume” restaurants that serve moderate tasting food. At Joseph Decuis each item is crafted with the care and refinement you would expect to find in a Michelin star restaurant. Each morsel was mesmerizing as your tastebuds are taken on a journey that leaves you yearning for the next bite. I’ve been fortunate enough to try other high end restaurants around the US and am happy to say that Roanoke, IN is blessed with one of the very best.

We had high expectations as I’ve grown up in Roanoke and heard all about Joseph Decuis from family and friends over the years. We finally got to go, and It was better than we anticipated! The service was amazing but the food was even better! Best steak and fettuccine we have ever had. They also let you pick your own steak knife, which a server comes and lets your pick from a case and they are hand crafted, the experience was awesome.

My fiancé and I went to Joseph Decuis for a celebration dinner. The whole staff was so inviting and accommodating. From our hostess, to our server, the manager, the bartender, and more, every single touchpoint was met with wonderful hospitality and genuine enthusiasm - we REALLY felt welcomed there! Even though Fort Wayne/Roanoke is a 2 hour drive for us, we are making plans to make this a monthly dining spot! We were even lucky enough to meet the owners, Pete, Alice, and Tim. What a treat, as they took the time to get to know us and our stories, and shared a few of their own. If you are looking for the best dining experience in Indiana and beyond, head to the cute town of Roanoke and reserve a table at Joseph Decuis!!!

Service was excellent and attempted to be very responsive and attentive for our party of four. It was a bit hard on the server, as the coconut shrimp was burnt, its fried rice accompaniment was similarly burnt, and the steaks appeared to be strip more than the ribeye that was ordered. Additionally, the apple salad seemed mismatched with the heavy coating of shredded Gouda and the shaved Brussels sprouts salad was a bit bitter. We did not risk dessert. The town and resultant ambience are marvelous, and the wine list is very good. The restaurant made things right as much as possible, but the meals just didn’t meet expectation.

Location, ambiance and service were excellent. Salads missed the mark a bit (combinations of flavors left them a bit sour), coconut shrimp and accompanying rice were burnt black, and steaks appeared to be strip rather than ribeye (almost no marbling).

Okay, great place to have dinner but left a little to be desired. Drinks, appetizers, salads, and dessert were all amazing. When we got our main course both me and my finance had 8oz steaks cooked medium rare, mine was almost rare and his was closer to medium rare. The sides for the main dishes were small for the price of the dinner. We didn’t expect massive portions, but these were just too small for the price. Potatoes are not expensive. The next day me and my fiancé both felt very heavy and the food did not sit well with our stomachs. Super good service and super good atmosphere though!!

We dined at Joseph Decuis last week for a birthday celebration. Despite many positive reviews, our experience was quite bad. The interaction with our server was not friendly or engaging and she seemed fairly disinterested in conversation about the restaurant or food. When our food arrived, one steak was cold and the other was over cooked... and they were served to the wrong people. In addition, we were not informed that soup and salad were ~$20 each and were not included with a meal. Finally, for the birthday celebration, we were served a candle on a plate... no cake or desert (photo attached). We honestly thought it was a prank at first, but it certainly was not. Given the hundreds of dollars we spent on this meal, our expectations were much, much higher.

Let me start by saying, I have spent thousands of dollars at this restaurant throughout the years, and use to rank this restaurant as a definite 5 stars!!!! However my last experience was not up to the standards this restaurant once was. Starting with the menu, the website, and other menu's online where all different compared to the one they had there. The menu was also confusing because appetizers were listed after soups and salads. However the waitress, came and asked us about the appetizers first, and when I mentioned soup she said she would put in appetizers first.... Secondly, I asked about there amazing bread they use to have. The waiter helping our waitress said they hadn't had bread due to COVID, which at this point just doesn't make sense literally at all...and to be honest there bread was what set them apart. I wasn't even offered bread I could even buy....which for someone like me willing to spend hundreds on a dinner out was wild. IF JD is reading this YOU HAVE TO BRING BACK THE BREAD PPl!! Because here's the deal, Fort Wayne NOW actually has good restaurants these days and your not the only high end restaurant anymore... Thirdly, your drink menu for wine has GONE DOWN HILL holy moly that was just pathetic. There where basically 10 wines to choose from.... I was ready to buy a hundred dollar + bottle...but settled on a martini...ok.. Lastly, my main course the mushroom ravioli was Applebee's quality, not great..... I will also tell you the waitress was basic, when people pay as much as your charging people want to know MORE. Like where was some of the food sourced or a interesting fact or two about the restaurant or town something to create an experience... I will give JD one more chance and visit again, but if JD doesn't improve you will lose my business forever.. People like me have no problem paying for a quality dinning experience!! But people like me also can't be fooled.. Good luck JD

Really pretty restaurant, the art was great. Serving staff were extremely friendly. Our appetizers were very good - the corned beef stew and mushroom focaccia. It took a long time for our mains. I think I would have really liked my pork, but it was luke warm by time it got to table, second attempt wasn’t much better. They had an extra trout which they gave me which was very good. My husband’s wagyu steak was tasty, but for price, it didn’t overwhelm. The chocolate cake was delicious. I definitely appreciate when restaurants go out of their way to make sure their customers are satisfied. If I lived in area, would go back for a nice evening out.

I have been hearing about this really nice and expensive dinner spot for a while. Decided to book a table for 4 for our DIL's birthday. Nice ambience but that was about it. After waiting about 20 minutes for someone to take our order, the night was moving forward. During the wait for our food, we had a few drinks (and they didn't offer a wine list which was odd) and spent most of the time swatting fruit flies. We killed 6 of them and there were at least that many more - just at our table. After we had finished appetizers, i set my plate to side instead of leaving it on the charger plate. The waitress thought i was still eating and i told her no...that i set it aside because of the fruit flies. She said 'Oh" and moved on. The flies continued to bombard us for the 2-1/2 hours that we were sitting there. On to the food. I had the "chicken or the egg" appetizer and the bread was so salty you could not eat it. The other 3 had corn soup which was tasty. The main course was the Wagyu strip steak, 5 oz. It came with creamed potatoes and cubed veggies. The steak was cooked medium on request and tasted just OK. It was not very tender and seemed a bit "crunchy" - maybe that is how Wagyu beef is - I don't know never had it. Honestly, I have had much better steak at multiple other locations, including my backyard. Not to mention it also was way too salty. The veggies were still crunchy which was a bit weird. I ate it all since it cost so much but I didn't really want to. My wife had the fried pounded steak and frites - so chicken fried steak and fries. The fries were so salty you couldn't eat them and the steak was so full of breaded salty crust, that was difficult to eat as well. We then had dessert - a bourbon chocolate cake which was again, very average. All in all, $552 for the four of us. The 5 oz steaks were $95 each and equaled to about $10/bite. We will not be going back. And I will be completely honest when asked about it.

Dessert was just as amazing as the meal…. To top off the fantastic meal, Dennis offered to give us a tour of the second floor, which houses the “Chairman Room” filled with really interesting artifacts from the founders…an absolute must-see!! Dined with friends early and were seated in the glassed atrium. Bright and quiet, but noise level increased as it became more crowded. Our server had a very loud voice which was a bit grating. The prices were very high for the food received. Some of us had the Waygu hamburger which came with rather common French fries. Mine was served medium rare which they said was their typical preparation. It was quite raw and bloody in much of the middle, more like steak tartare, and I even ran into a few bone chips. I would order it medium if I ever had it again. The perogis were very tasty but tiny. The glasses of wine ordered were a very small pour for the price paid. On the whole, we would not return again.

My wife surprised me for my 30th birthday here. While the food was good and the drinks were great, our service was well below average. We went long periods of time without somebody checking on us, we heard other servers telling the story of the restaurant, having conversations with their guests, but ours would be gone long periods of time and when she did attend to us, she seemed rushed and frustrated. The other servers were filling our waters or giving us our check and we saw them more than our actual server. We all have off nights, but I think for all the high praise we heard of this place, how they take pride in their service, and how expensive it was, we were expecting much better service.

Joseph Decuis’ focus is its Waygu beef. I’m not enough of a beef aficionado to appreciate Waygu versus steak served at other really good steak restaurants. They shined for me though in the steak’s perfect preparation and in the flavors and preparation of their other dishes. There are few restaurants left in Indianapolis that do as well. Their food and ambiance reminded us of past Indy restaurants such as R Bistro and Peter’s.

We'd been hearing about Joseph Decuis for quite sometime and finally decided to spend the night in Roanoke, IN so we could dine there. One of us had a very good dinner and the other was disappointed. First, the good: an appetizer featuring spicy carrots was really tasty and the salmon entree was perfect. But the not-so-good: Joseph Decuis features Wagyu beef raised locally by the owners, so we expected a beef carpaccio to highlight the thinly sliced meat but instead was drenched in an overwhelming sauce. Did we taste anchovies in it? The beef could not be appreciated and the chef should reconsider serving a sauce at all. The other disappointment was the Wagyu entree: only offered a flat iron steak or a tri tip, we chose the latter. We were surprised that the table next to us was offered a NY strip and another was offered ribeye. Not sure why more beef entrees aren't offered particularly since that really is the star of the restaurant. The tri tip, ordered medium rare, featured only one section as ordered and the others were medium, and, quite frankly, dry. Good service, lovely cocktails and a stellar wine list certainly helped with our dining experience but could not compensate for the ill-prepared Wagyu beef.

Dinner at Joseph Decuis is a fabulous experience. My husband and I were there with family from Milwaukee. Their positive impression began with their walk to the restaurant from their parked car; they were intrigued by the Main Street appeal of Roanoke, Indiana. Service was exceptional. The restaurant is charming and has several different areas in which customers can be seated. Each area is different; all are beautiful. Joseph Decuis is known for its locally grown Wagyu beef; my niece had the filet mignon, which came with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. She praised every bite. My brother and I had the Wagyu ground beef hamburger, with cheese, shoestring potatoes and bacon jam and served with a side of onion rings. The burger was outstanding. The onion rings were coated in a breading with a slight bit of heat. Combined with the sweetness of the onion, they were delicious. Our hummus/baba ganoush appetizer with pita bread was devoured by the table. My husband and brother raved about the salad with braised radishes and honey mustard. Everything everybody ordered was delicious. Joseph Decuis changes its menu regularly (maybe daily). This is definitely a place for a special occasion dinner. You won't be disappointed.

This local fine dining is the anchor of downtown Roanoke. Truly farm to table--the farm is just 6mi away and absolutely stunning. First impression, I'd love to see the resteraunt updated, it feels a little out of date, a little musty, and the seating in the atrium is not comfortable. The menu is very small and seasonal. I appreciated that they offered a burger or chicken strip meal that was not on the menu as this cuisine does not cater to a 12 and under guest. We started with a cheese board, all the varieties of summer sausage were house made wagyu, including the best chorizo I've had to date, and a honey pepper jam that was the perfect addition, just a tad too sweet but still good. We tried the chicken entree, my husband raved. The grilled Caesar salad was beautiful. The Lil Mac tartar was adorable but very loaded with pickles in the special sauce. I tried bone marrow for the first time, because if you're going to order the butter from the Gods, it should be wagyu--a Decuis staple. My plate was gorgeous, loaded with savory broth, beef and vegetables that were seasoned perfectly. The pita was buttery and charred, just the most beautiful complement. I wish we would've ordered the steak, but the prices are steep, 75-95/cut. My Thursday night budget laughed at that. There are three items available for dessert, but the dessert drinks were abundant.

When we arrived, we found out that the restaurant was closed and our dinner reservation was for a BBQ at their farm on paper plates with plastic cutlery. We double checked our reservation, and we had no correspondence or notice that our restaurant reservation was changed to a fixed menu, buffet BBQ with our nicer clothes smelling of smoke. We left just after scarfing down a little food as fire ash kept blowing into our eyes and onto our food. We were quite disappointed after a 2 hour drive expecting a Wagyu steak and a nice bottle of wine. If there would have been any communication about the change, I’m sure we would have made different plans.

Very nice, friendly staff. Excellent service. The complimentary champagne was a nice touch for our anniversary, as well as the staff all wishing us a happy anniversary. We went on a Thursday at 5 so it was very quiet. That was nice. The mushrooms were excellent although pricey. My only real complaint is the lack of selection on the cuts of beef. We knew in advance there was a limited menu, but it did not occur to us that we would be limited to flat iron steak and Takata ( shoulder cut) as our choices of steak. We were expecting to be able to buy better cuts of meat at such an exclusive steak house. My husband really likes the prime rib and I would have preferred a filet. The portions are also very small for the price. I feel like they could have at least given a larger portion of potatoes and vegetables to compensate for the small portions of beef. If you're looking for a better deal I highly recommend their Emporium for lunch.

Good delicious food, excellent service, WAY overpriced for small portions of beefs. Glad we did it, once.

Went for our anniversary I thought they would do something or give us something but they didn’t told us happy anniversary, vegetables were really good, thought we were getting mashed potato’s or baked but they said twice baked and it was French fries, waygu never had it was good but a 5 oz steak for 95 dollars didn’t live up to the hype.

The steak I had was good, but the Thai bowl with rib meat that my husband had was not very good. Also I think the quality of the food did not match the price paid. It was overpriced for sure.

The staff upon arrival was very polite and friendly, we were promptly seated and presented drink menus. The servers were as good or better than what you would expect from a 4 diamond restaurant. We were on a constrained time allowance and the entire staff accommodated our needs as requested. The appetizer features to the dinner presentation was unmatched in this area. Would highly recommend this establishment for a date night out or any occasion! Amazing food backed by incredible service!

What a disappointing evening. We went to Joseph Decuis last evening to celebrate my husband’s birthday. I told them when I made the reservation several weeks ago we would be celebrating his birthday. We were seated at a table in the back corner of the room where only one of us could see others in the dining room. We ordered our wine and looked over the menu. There were only 4 entrees to choose from. Three beef dishes and one vegetarian. OK, they are famous for the Waygu beef so we thought we would each have a fillet. Wrong. The only two steaks were flat iron and rib eye. The waitress suggested we share half of each ( the kitchen would set it up that way for us). When it came the flat iron had gristle running through it and it was $75. By the way the rib eye was $95. The meat was tepid at best while the vegetables were hot. There were only 3 options for dessert and none sounded appealing to us. They brought one anyway. The service was slow. Again, very disappointed with what was supposed to be a very special evening. We won’t be coming back.

You wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it--and taste it--for yourself. Here it is, an upscale, world-class American restaurant serving Wagyu steaks in Roanoke, Indiana. Wagyu is arguably the finest tasting and healthiest beef in the world. And Joseph Decuis is the only restaurant in the United States that raises its own Wagyu on its own farm with traditional Japanese husbandry practices--all natural, humane, drug free and stress free. Located at 191 North Main Street, off U.S. Route 24, 12 miles southwest of Fort Wayne, nine miles northeast of Huntington, the Joseph Decuis restaurant thrives in a town of 1,800 that was founded in 1850 in conjunction with the Wabash and Erie Canal. In 1720, when Joseph Decuis' grandfather came to the New World, people ate only what they hunted, bartered for, raised or bought from sources nearby. Food traveled from the forest or farm to the kitchen to the plate. So it is today. Pete, Alice and Tom Eshelman are the founders and owners of Joseph Decuis (pronounced day-QUEEZ). In 1993, they purchased an old building, converted it into a private dining facility, then opened Joseph Decuis in 2000. It has been voted the No. 1 restaurant in Indiana and one of the top 50 in the United States. Today, the Eshelmans' "Farm to Fork" experience not only includes a world-class restaurant but also an overnight getaway at the Inn in Roanoke or at the Bed & Breakfast on the farm. Not to mention a retail store and cafe in Roanoke. But my wife and I are here for dinner. For openers, Joseph Deuis offers six different dining areas to choose from, including the courtyard, the conservatory and the chairman's office, which is ideal for private dining. We opted for the courtyard and started with spinach soup, a charcuterie board with house-cured Wagyu and Mangalista sausages and assorted cheeses and bread and a spinach salad with broccoli, raspberry bacon dressing, cheese, red onion and chickpeas. For entrees, we indulged in the house's specialty, Wagyu steaks with mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. For dessert, we shared large slices of banana cream pie and chocolate bourbon pecan cake. You prefer something other than Wagyu? The menu also includes fried chicken, trout, pasta, Dover Sole and chicken and dumplings. Dinner at Joseph Decuis is an experience to remember.

We ordered a number of appetizers to share. The spinach soup, the bone marrow, the spinach salad and the prosciutto were all outstanding. We could have stopped there but had to have the soft shell crab and the meatballs. (two separate entrees) Nothing disappointed. It never does at JDs. It is one of my all time favorites. We love the staff!!!

We have eaten at many upscale places and this by far was the BEST meal we have eaten!! Our first time dining here, came for the oysters and they did not disappoint- we tried every kind. The Wagyu was so flavorful, tender and melted in your mouth. Cooked to perfection. The cocktails were on point! We saw the owner, Pete, at the bar and he came to our table and educated us on how he started the restaurant following his Japanese mentor, who introduced this marvelous meat to countries outside of Japan. Such a wonderful experience! We will definitely be back!!

Wait staff was fantastic! The food on the other hand ehhh. We had the prosciutto app which was great and the oyster on a half Bienville style were fantastic! Now on the steak we had a choice of skirt or "speical" reserved steak. So we went with the "special" per our waitress and it was the toughest most inconsistent piece of meat I have had out of a restaurant in a long time. Other than the tough main course (steak) what they are known for, it wasn't a bad experience.

The raw oysters were so tasty we ordered more, the Bienville oysters were fantastic, as was the oyster stew. Chef, Laura, Rochelle, et al. Providing outstanding service. JDs is a treasure. It was great to see Alice! I'll be back next week so save some oysters!!!

My wife and I went here for our anniversary. This was our first time going here and we were not disappointed. We started with the charcuterie board which I highly recommend. For our entree we decided to get the full wagyu short rib and I can honestly say it was the best short rib I’ve ever tasted. Understandably the wagyu is very pricy, but at 200 for a short rib I was back and fourth as to whether it was worth it. My wife and I enjoyed the evening so much that we decided it was worth every penny! The wait staff was fantastic! We ended our evening with a wonderful thin mint chocolate cake and baklava. Both deserts were very good but the baklava was a little too on the sweet side for me. My wife and I will be making Joseph Decius a tradition for our anniversary!

Lovely meal but I would work on the decor for such a seemingly upscale restaurant. We were in the atrium area where the tables seemed like cheap rental tables with tablecloths thrown on them. Also forgot the espresso in my cappuccino (quickly fixed) which was hard to believe. Duck was amazing as were all our entrees.

Great atmosphere and setting. Enjoyed a Valentine Day dinner with my wife and no complaints until the end. We were neglected at the end of the main course and desert portion as our server was catering to one adjacent table. We were finished and had to wait longer than normal to get desert ordered and our bill. Other than that, it was a fantastic evening.

Service was extremely slow for the cost of the food I would consider it not great $95 for a steak that was so fatty. I couldn’t chew it. Beautiful restaurant. I have enjoyed going there in the past, but was very disappointed in this experience.

We have been to JD’s for several meals and they’re usually really good. This Valentine’s Day dinner was just ehh. The menu was quite limited and had a lot of the unusual gourmet type things. Nothing wrong with that, we appreciate a variety. We ended up ordering the wagu cheeseburger and were surprised to see it was just a slider when it came out. The thrice fried fries that came with it were more cheesy potatoes than fries. Also just sort of ok. The restaurant is beautiful and we will return at some point, I would just recommend you research the menu first before you go. It’s just disappointing to spend a lot of money on a meal, have to Google part of the menu (….veal cheeks anyone??) and then walk away still hungry.
