A group of my friends and I went here today for dinner. I just wanted to shoutout to David who was helping wait on us and really provide top notch service. He was very kind and attentive! We had young children with us and he made sure to grab dishes to help keep their areas clean. 10/10 for customer service from David!! Also the breaded chicken breast sandwich is also delicious! So crispy every time!

I ordered roast pork, sauerkraut, and dumplings to go. I got my salad. I did not get my soup. However they gave me an extra serving of sauerkraut. I don’t know if that breaks even but the salad was delicious with the croutons. The bread was still warm and the portion and the sizeof the roast pork is enough for four meals for me. It was moist and delicious as well as the dumplings with gravy. This is my third time here I just wish it wasn’t so far from my home.

It was an awesome experience and the food was great. Every one was so extremely kind to my granddaughter my daughter and my daughter’s boyfriend. The vicinity was clean and stylish. My granddaughter had a burger with only ketchup and lettuce. Overall I highly recommend “Mack’s Golden Pheasant”!!!

The good: The highlight of our visit here was the service. Our server, Heather, was incredibly friendly and attentive. We had a larger group and she took care of us with the grace and ease of a seasoned pro. She even offered to take a group photo of our family on their patio (which is very nice btw). I think it's fair to say that Heather may be one of the best servers I've ever had. The rest of the staff were all moving quickly and working hard, but never seemed unpleasant or unfriendly. The food portions are huge. The saurkraut I received with my meal was incredibly good. My Dad said the French Onion soup was the best he's had in a very long time. The average: The rest of the food was very good, but not great. The dumplings were smaller than I'd hoped for. The bad: The lighting here is also incredibly dark. We had a couple of seniors in our group that could not read the menu or even see the food on their plate. I know you're going for cozy and warm, but the dimness was a tad overdone. Overall, we definitely enjoyed our experience here and I hope to come back. Thank you again Heather for making us feel welcome and taking such good care of us!

Really, they don't have many restaurants like this anymore. The abundance of good food with soup and salad along with a very reasonable price. Nice old European atmosphere as well. Really love coming here for a great dining experience.

Fish fry is okay not much flavor The owner is hoot

I got very sick after eating my meal .not sure if was the chicken or the shrimp or the salad dressing that caused it.. otherwise it has always been a good restaurant

Dinner was disappointing. Twenty mins to take our order and get something to drink. An hour and ten mins to get our dinner. The food was not great. After receiving our dinner we got the check 10 mins later.

Atmosphere is super. Old school with a garden. Drinks are not great. Watered down. But cheap. The ice cream drinks for dessert are wonderful!!! The food is good. Not amazing. But good.

Best cooked burger I've ever had!

We held a birthday for my wife here on a busy Saturday for 14 people. Food was amazing and all staff was absolutely superb. And when the check came, lower than expected for such a large group. Of the 14, 12 have never been here before and live local and will likely come again. Thank you for making the evening so enjoyable.

Mack's is a place that truly makes you feel welcome. If you're looking for a great meal or even just a drink and a laugh this is the place to go. A+ Food staff and atmosphere. I highly recommend the Friday night fish fry!

Least appetizing meal I've had in quite a long time. I just really cannot stress enough how NOT good this restaurant's food is. The staff were fine.

OK WHERE TO START!!! Mack knows his martini’s and is always a joy to chat with!!! Amanda is always excited to see us and we appreciate how fast she keeps the drinks coming !!! Luke and Kurt in the restaurant always make us feel at home and the food is phenomenal, they have so much to choose from and many specials !!! The restaurant is a local landmark and if you’ve not been, giddy up as they fill up fast !!! Thank you to everyone at the golden pheasant restaurant!!! As Arnold once said “I’ll be back!!!”

This place is a complete joke, after eating a gross looking piece of fish the restroom became my friend

I went to this place on a Saturday at 5 o’clock with my parents who had been here before. We did not have a reservation nor knew that a reservation was needed. That was our fault. They told us it would be a 30 minute wait. We suggested that we have a drink at the bar and wait, and the hostess said she would notify us when the table was ready. Fast forward 1.5 hours later, my mother had visited the hostess stand many times. They continuously said that they were “getting our table ready.” The hostess never once updated us or made any suggests throughout the entire waiting period (we always approached her). Perhaps if she had been more transparent even in the beginning, we would have not wasted our time. We would have been fine leaving after the 30 mins (at 5:30) if they told us it was unlikely to get a table. Instead we decided to leave 1.5 hours later, which made it difficult to find a new restaurant. I wasn’t mad that they didn’t have a table (because we didn’t have a reservation), I was mad that they kept lying to us and wasting our time. Left angry, hungry, and with an unwanted bar tab. I will never be returning. Trash parking lot too.

Very nice. A Villa Park institution. This place has been serving the community for over 50 years. I can't recommend this place enough!

I've been going there for years!! My husband and both had a reaction to the msg (!) yep. why?That place has always been known for the quality and freshness of the wonderful dishes. Also, the red cabbage and sour kraut were SO sweet I couldn't eat it!! Why? Keep the old traditional ways!!

Meat tasted unseasoned and was dry in all of our sandwiches. Food took forever. Fries were whatever. Not bad but not good. Server rarely checked in on us. Only minorities in there and definitely seems unwelcoming.

Excellent manhattans, and excellent fish. The ambience, the booths, the music, the dim lights, and lovely staff, all of these things are so appreciated. Thank you. We look forward to returning.

Food took a really long time and waitress was very attentive.

So glad we found this place. Foods great, staffs great, owners great. Actually sat next to him at the bar while we both ate food from their kitchen. Awesome place. Highly recommended.

This place is great, it’s my favorite restaurant in Elmhurst. I’ve been going there for many years. The food is excellent and the pricing is very fair for the amount and quality of food you receive. Great option for eating in or take out.

Loved it! Was like eating in a cabin in the woods. Good food reasonably priced. Dinners included soup and salad! Sandwiches included fries and soup or salad. Variety of drinks. Has outdoor garden seating with lights.

Food was good, particularly the beef dumpling soup. Service was lacking, due to having just two servers for the entire restaurant on a Saturday night. Should have a better German beer selection.

Cute little throw back place. The beef stroganoff is fantastic!

Good burgers and food and drinks

Made a reservation for 4pm amd got stuck in traffic. I tried calling beforehand when we were running late and the restaurant was not open. I waited until they opened and tried again only to be hung up on twice without anyone saying anything.

Our food was delicious and the service impeccable! Went there with my parents 50 years ago. I moved to the area a couple of years ago, and covid hit, I never got to go back. I decided to check it out again with my boyfriend, and I am so happy we did. We will be going back soon!

Always great food and service. Everything on the menu!! The ribs were fall off the bone excellent tonight. Along with everything else we ate!

I been there once only . Never again. New customers are not welcome. It seems that is always the same that visit this place . Mostly retired. The waitress (bartender)was very unfriendly made me feel very uncomfortable because according to her I was ordering too much food at once. None of her business. Beer taste badly.

Update: returned on a visit 5yrs later, still delicious and wonderful! The staff is very personable, so expect friendly service with a bit of a wait. Original: Fresh bread, need I say more? I will. It's soft and tasty, though a bit crumbly crust makes a mess but worth it. Love their cosmopolitan martini. Fish fry Friday is good and the chili is one of my faves. Order it with cheese, and it comes like a cap all over the chili like French onion soup, except its cheddar (of course). Love the atmosphere, like a cozy pub with a dining room.

Great food and great atmosphere

Went back again here since my previous review that was just 3 stars and our waiter wasn't great that time. This time we were so pleasantly surprised for Friday Fish Fry night. Host was incredibly friendly, and he sat us right away. We loved the all you can eat fish fry ---beer battered style is my fav but you can also choose regular breaded. Our server was lovely and worked fast--her name was Lexi I think? We also had the Barry Burger which was a great choice. Definitely give that a try if you want a big juicy burger. Really like the reasonably priced drinks here too- I like their Tom Collins for 6.95. Can't beat that. Will be back. Try to make a reservation if you can on weekends.

Always a great experience going to Mack's. Very friendly staff and kid friendly, my daughter loves it when we visit Mack's for a meal.

The bar was interesting and the prices were very good. They decorate with money! The food was wonderful! They were pretty busy that night and not too speedy, but we didn't mind.

The food was great!! They don’t use a lot of salt which is perfect for us, but they have hot sauce and salt on the table. The skillet was so flavorful and caramelized.

Good food and portions. Though not friendly for Enjoying Relaxing time. Felt as though we were Rushed out of there. Asked for Boxes to be brought to table (we weren't Done yet- just wanted to utilize busy waiter when we saw him) and they Took Our Food off the table without even Asking.

We checked in for dinner about 6pm on a Saturday evening, the two of us. Yes, they were busy, understood. We were told 30 minutes so we added our name to the wait list. An hour later my wife went to enquire. While she was by the desk a group of 4 came in, no reservation, my wife had asked in conversation. 5 minutes later the group of 4 was seated. My wife asked where we were on the waitlist. She was told maybe another 30 minutes ago. They don’t have tables specifically for 2. They didn’t care how long we waited as long as they got the maximum $ or what they perceived would be the maximum $. You know what I ask, just be honest. After an hour and a half of a 30 minute wait we went somewhere else.

I've only sat in the bar area to watch games. They've got a couple German beers on tap. Good German food. Lots of TVs. Friendly staff.

First of all, I've got to say what an AWESOME JOB the staff did!!! My sister and I brought three older ladies, one of whom was our mother (who needs help getting around). We went on a Saturday around 5:30 pm and it was packed, but when they saw my mom struggling they got us a table as quickly as possible. They even brought her a chair to sit on while we waited. The staff was so helpful at getting my mom seated and then later helping her get ready to leave, that we were blown away. THANK YOU!! It really felt like we were a part of your family. The atmosphere was beautiful. Lots of wood and character. It looks like the outdoor patio will be amazing when weather permits. It's a little noisy but busy restaurants usually are. The food was fantastic. I had the small (it wasn't small at all) Roast Baby Pork Loin with dumplings and sauerkraut which was delicious. My mom had the Blackened Mahi Mahi which she loved. My aunt had the Breaded Pork Tenderloin which was also great. Family owned and it feels like it! Everyone had leftovers to take home except me. I was stuffed but I couldn't stop indulging in the deliciousness. Parking might look packed, but drive around in the back and you'll find more. The parking lot could use some repair, but based on the rest of our experience we overlooked that. Everyone in our party was more than happy with our experience!

The food was cold. The service was slow, we waited an hour for sandwiches. We actually gave this place a second shot & we will not return.

The staff was very personable, the food was plentiful, with bread, soup, salad and entree. I had the shrimp linguini and it was so good and plentiful. This place has been around for a long time and the music and atmosphere was very nostalgic.

Atmosphere was decent, but a bit too dark during dinner and it was chilly, almost as if a window were open to the negative temperature outside. Service was lacking as it took a long time for anyone to come around to take our order and people rudely reached across our faces to pick up plates without announcing themselves or asking if we were done with the plate. I was beyond displeased with the food, especially at the fairly high price point. I ordered a steak cooked medium well and it was basically burnt. The asparagus was completely unseasoned and was more or less still raw. It is sad for this to be my first experience here because my Grandma has been visiting since she was less than 10 years old and has spoken highly of it until this visit.

The only nice thing I can say about this place is that it was cute and that is where it stops. I got sick to my stomach before leaving the restaurant, need I say more? For the prices and the quality, how is it still packed? People were bringing the leftovers home with them... you really want to eat THAT again? We got the soup and salad which was pretty ok, but from there it was right downhill. From the watery fish to the overcooked steaks everything was pretty flavorless. Out of desperation, we got German chocolate cake, how can something be soggy and dry at the same time? I know you are a suburban supper club, but you need to up your game and season things better. We will certainly never be coming back.

My son and I dined there right when it opened. He couldn't wait... Since yesterday he had his heart set on it. We were warmly welcomed,, ordered drinks, an appetizer and our meals. We received our drinks fine, with the appetizer, but then others came in after us, and they also ordered, then were served before we were. We waited an hour for our fish dinners. I ordered dumplings and sweet sour cabbage, then received dry dumplings, and sauerkraut. They kept coming to get our plates and things; giving us the idea that they wanted us to be done. He said his "all you can eat" fish was okay; yet was better last time. We were just so very disappointed.

Great place, great people, great food, relaxing dinning room with fireplace, outside dining, fun bar with lots of regulars been coming for 30+years. Soups are seriously the best ever!

I am sitting at the restaurant writing the review. First we were I ignored by the hostess. She was more interested in talking to a patron then seating us. Even the patron suggested she should seat but instead she stated she would be rt with us and continued on with her conversation. Waiter got food order wrong. My pork loin came out cold then they reheated and pork was dry. Very very disappointed. Last time we will ever eat here.

I have lived in the far western suburbs of Chicago for 61 years. I have driven by this restaurant 100's of times. Since the Bohemian Crystal in Westmont closed not to long ago, I was wondering what place I could go to for Eastern European food. As my wife and I drove past Mack's I said I've always wanted to go there. My wife Googled it (not a plug lol) and Mack's is the oldest continuously run restaurant in DuPage County. We made reservations for a Friday night with another couple- the place was hopping. Kind of a biker vibe at the packed bar, but the restaurant was really cool- Decorated with all kinds of European doodads and wall hangings. I was waiting for Mack to walk by with some pheasants and rabbits slung over his shoulder. I had the Bohemian Platter- a 1/4 duck + a generous pork loin steak. Bread dumplings and sauerkrat. Dinner include an ok dinner salad and a cup of soup. Unlimited home made hot bread. We sat by the picture window over looking the nice pond and waterfall feature. We sat for 2.5 hours and had a gas. Service was good and they kept the table bussed really well. A true gem. Like a Wisconsin supper club- all kinds of vintage cocktails. This is not a hoity toity place- good European food at s fair price in a really cool venue. I'm kicking myself for never going to Mack's. Now I know. David TwoTrees

The food was wonderful they were down staff members for waiter staff so they were kind of slow and when they did wait I knew it was kind of a rush

Very slow initially for our waiter to appear. Food was very good and PLENTY of it. Minestrone soup was fabulous. Too dark inside. Difficult to read sections of the menu with white type on black background, at least in the area where we were seated (right by fireplace). Only negative - DO NOT order soda. Tasted some of my husband's Sprite, lines have got to be filthy, tasted horrendous.

Excellent food. Staff was exceptional. All were working hard and moving fast to make sure that the clients were served promptly and efficiently. Even the hostess went above and beyond helping with other jobs and assisting her coworkers.

Great place for real home cooking. I had the sausage sampler and it was delicious. Seasoned perfectly. My wife had the roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut. It was also delicious. The small was ample enough to have at home the next night We both had the French onion soup with cheese. Also winderful

Very good food. The outdoor patio is fun, with a family of raccoons to watch. We ordered a variety of dishes, ranging from Prime Rib to sliders to pasta and salad. Everything was tasty. Their bread is a great starter.

Passed this place every week gor 40yrs and always wanted to stop. We finally did...5 of us for dinner on a Saturday night. Waitress was nice but service was slow. One dinner was pasta and the sauce had flavor but was very watery, one stuffed pork chop that was very over cooked (like leather) and very little flavor, (2) breaded pork tenderloin dinners ordered and both flavorless and extremely over cooked and lastly a veal schnitzel with dumpling was extremely over cooked and flavorless also and the dumpling was basically bread with gravy on it. The French onion soup and the apple strudel were delicious!

We spent nice time. I had a Bohemian Plate it was good, but the duck wasn't very fresh.
