An institution of ethnic food in Salt Lake City.Brilliant Ethiopian food with plenty of choices if you're a meat eater, vegetarian or even vegan. Fantastic injera bread and I always recommend the group platter to start (taste of Mahider), the lentil or chicken Samusas and the salad. Good location close to downtown, good parking and ambience is fine, nothing fancy but neither a "hole in the wall". Reasonable prices for the quality of the food and always good service. A must try.

Incredible! We did the two person Taste of Mahider shareable meal. I absolutely love that you get to try so many different dishes. It costs about $35, but is definitely two meals per person! Everything in the dish was amazing! They're injera (traditional Ethiopian bread) was amazing. Fast and friendly service. I highly recommend this place! They have a super fun market attached with spices, flour, and things you cannot find anywhere else.

This little restaurant was such a delightful experience today for my friends and me. We loved how kind the service is and the food was so flavorful. I loved every minute of my time there. It was warm and inviting and for about 50 dollars the 3 of us shared a giant plate of food... that we just about finished! Trust me, we tried. Our eyes we just bigger than our stomachs. I will be coming here again and spreading the word that this cute, quaint, and delicious restaurant is where you want to eat.

We ordered the Mahider special. We tend to eat a lot, especially when it's good, and neither of us could finish. More injera than needed. Excellent variety. I liked every dish, even the spinach and cabbage both of which I typically don't. Lentils and darker beef were especially nice.

Absolutely delicious! The combo platter is well worth the price and gives you a good overview of the cuisine--everything is perfectly seasoned, slightly spicy, and there is plenty to go around. I personally love the tangy taste of injera and happily ate all the leftovers, of which we had plenty. It also is very nourishing and hearty without being heavy, and they have a good variety of vegetarian dishes. Great service, too! Wish I lived closer :)

I had never had the pleasure to try Ethiopian food before my friend took me here. I was quite surprised with the food and service here! The staff were so friendly, with some of the kindest smiles I have seen! The food was unique, spicy, and tasty. It was interesting that the base of their food was this strange, yet tasty bread that had an almost sponge-like look and feel to it. It was then great to see the nice products they had over at their market, conjoined in the same building! It is tasty, affordable, and quite a nice market to sit down and rest at! Definitely check this place out if you're looking to expand your taste horizons!

First time trying Ethiopian food. The vegetarian combination plate had some good dishes in it, such as the spinach. Enough to serve 2-4 people. It all sits on the injera; a sour crepe like bread that is also provided on the side. I personally would prefer the rice over the injera as it just isn't in my taste. Service was attentive and the restroom was clean.

Mahider is one of only a couple of Ethiopian restaurants in Salt Lake. Thank goodness it's good. This review is for those that haven't had Ethiopian food before. The Siga Wot is delicious; it's a thick stew of slightly spicy and flavorful beef. The portions are sufficient for one meal, possibly a small take-home. Looking for vegetarian? Try the Sambusa as an appetizer and the Yemisir Wot as a meal. What makes Ethiopian food distinct is injera, the spongy sourdough crepe-like flatbread that is used to scoop up the food. Ethiopian food is eaten with hands not utensils. The restaurant has about a dozen tables. There's a store with Ethiopian food and coffee items next door. The service was good. I will come back.

Update My current favorite restaurant. I've fallen in love with the injara (flatbread) and I come here multiple times a month when I can. I'd probably come more often if they were a bit closer to home. For my previous review I mentioned that service was really slow. Most of the time this isn't a problem but when they are packed, they do struggle a bit. That's OK - it's totally worth it. The food is good, the portions are generous and, although the price has gone up recently, it is perfectly reasonable. As noted before, the staff is all friendly and helpful, even when they are bogged down. Highly recommended. ***** Original review ***** I took my kids here for the unique dining experience. A lot of the food is pretty different from what they were used to and most didn't like at least a few things, but they did all like some of it and lived the experience of sharing a platter of food and eating with your hands. I personally think the food is quite good (and makes fantastic left overs), although if I am being perfectly honest, I think I'd prefer to eat the various things with rice rather than the traditional flatbread (which *is* an option) and use a fork instead of my hands, but that's just me. If you haven't done it before, it's worth coming here once just for the experience. We didn't have to wait to be seated, but the place was hopping and service was pretty slow. We all drained our water cups somewhat early on and never once did anyone offer to fill them. I had to flag servers down if I wanted anything. I'd probably take a star off, except with staffing being as hard as it is these days and given that they appeared to be trying, but just short-staffed, I'll let it slide. Although a bit lacking in attentiveness, the staff was friendly and helpful (when I could get their attention) and the orders were all correct.

The place is clean and nice. The overall atmosphere wasn’t as I expected; however, it was still an enjoyable environment. The service was good and quick. The waiter was speedy with our orders, and everything came out as requested. The portions were a perfect size for three people, and I didn’t leave hungry or overstuffed. Yet, for an Ethiopian restaurant, the food was almost bland in a way. It wasn’t bland compared to a piece of unseasoned chicken, but for a restaurant like this, I felt almost disappointed with how everything seemed like it had just too little spice, or too little bit of a kick, or not as flavorful as it could have been. Overall, the food was satisfying, filling, warm, and rich. There was just something missing. I understand if they’re trying to appeal to a certain demographic; this is Utah after all, and most people here are not exactly known for their spice tolerance. I’m part Indian, so maybe I’ve just been spoiled with super spicy and flavorsome things throughout my life. Again, I’m not saying that it wasn’t spicy or flavorful at all, it simply leaves something to be desired. I do wish there was some system of spice levels, like requesting a dish from mild to extra spicy. In the end, it was a good restaurant and I’m happy I went to experience the beauty of Ethiopian cuisine. Chicken Sambusa: 7/10. This is a mouthful of delicious (albeit a bit dry) chicken, well-seasoned and served with a side of wonderful and slightly chunky jalapeño sauce. The outside is crispy and crunchy, and the inside is chewy and warm. However, I do wish there was more flavor and spice. I came here hoping for something with a memorable and spicy piquancy, and although I got one, it wasn’t all that I was hoping for. This was good, but it could’ve been better. Lentil Sambusa: 7/10. I feel the same way about this sambusa as I feel with the chicken sambusas. It was good, and the jalapeño sauce made it even better. However, there was something I felt was missing. Flavor, spice, whatever it was, it just tasted bland for what I would have liked. Aside from that, nothing much to say about this sambusa that I didn’t say about the chicken one. A good appetizer nonetheless. Taste of Mahider: 8/10. This was a great dish for three people. It has all the vegan dishes, as well as the meats and such. Everything is seasoned wonderfully, and there’s a decent amount of spice that isn’t overwhelming. However, like the sambusa, I do wish there was more. The injera that comes both beneath and on the side of the entrée was cooler (temperature-wise) than I was expecting, but that didn’t take away from it at all. It had a slightly sour undertone, but not in the bitter way, it simply highlighted the flavor of everything it came with. Really good. My favorites of the dish were probably the chicken and most of the meats (I’m a meat-lover), but the bits of tomato, spinach, and lentil(?) were just as good. Overall, everything was flavorful, rich, spicy, and cooked perfectly. For the final time however, I wish there was something more in all of these platters, something that made me go “wow!”. I came here for incredible amounts of flavoring and excitement, but I don’t feel as if that’s what I got completely. In the end, it was a fun experience that I’m glad I had either way.

I had the pleasure of dining at Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant in Salt Lake City yesterday, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience that deserves a solid five-star review! The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the food. I ordered the rice with stewed beef, and it was nothing short of amazing. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the beef was tender and perfectly seasoned. It's evident that the chef at Mahider truly knows how to create a memorable and delicious meal. What sets Mahider apart, besides the outstanding cuisine, is the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The owner, who I had the pleasure of meeting, is incredibly polite and humble. They took the time to chat with me and ensure that my dining experience was enjoyable. This personal touch made the meal even more special. The service at Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant is top-notch. The servers are some of the best I've encountered. They were prompt and attentive, always ready to assist and provide recommendations. Their courtesy and professionalism added to the overall enjoyment of my visit. The serene ambiance of the restaurant is the cherry on top of this delightful dining experience. It's a perfect place to relax, enjoy a meal, and savor the flavors of Ethiopian cuisine. In conclusion, Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant in Salt Lake City is a hidden gem that I highly recommend to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience. From the incredible food to the polite and humble owner, and the outstanding service provided by the courteous servers, this restaurant truly deserves its five-star rating. TL;DR: It was tons of food and it was all good. I don't understand the complaints about the service. I found everyone pleasant. I don't understand the complaints about not enough injera, they gave plenty for free. I do understand both the discomfort of the patrons being denied extra injera before they finished (I certainly hate waiting around for more injera and want more on the way before I've finished what I have - it's like losing the use of your silverware for a few minutes in the middle of a meal). But injera takes days to ferment, and is as time-consuming and skill-requiring as making crepes. So I also understand the owner and cook not wanting to waste them. My solution would be to charge extra for more than X pieces. This way people will only order them if they're really going to eat them, and if they don't, at least you were paid for your ingredients, time, labor, and skill. Shiro is my favorite, and I have never seen it with cubed beef, so that was nice, though the beef was a bit tough. Sadly they don't do special kitfo anymore, but I was pleasantly surprised to get a small portion of cheese anyway. However, it was drier and crumblier than I'm used to, and I didn't love it. Finally, I would love to see gored gored on Ethiopian menus in SLC, preferably raw.

Gran variedad de opciones veganas y de carne. ¡Definitivamente comeremos allí de nuevo!

I ordered the vegetarian combination for take out . I appreciated the effort and care in taste quality and look at the presentation! 😄😍All the lentils, greens, etc were not over seasoned - I was able to make out delicious aromatics- garlic, onion and cumin- (I might be wrong) - nothing was salty and held well the next day for leftovers (!! Shareable portions for reasonable price) I will have to return to dine in- thank you for a great first impression! Porciones para compartir a un precio razonable) Tendré que volver a cenar. ¡Gracias por una excelente primera impresión!

My timeline shows six visits; I feel I’ve been here more than six times. The owner will greet you and from the door you will feel at home, the taste of their meats combined with the injira are so great to the palate.
