Mexicali Rose is a casual Mexican restaurant with pretty decent food. My go to here is the beef burrito and I like to add seasoned rice and cheese. Is it the best burrito I’ve ever had? No, but it is a decent burrito for its price of $11. It has great flavor in the ingredients are fresh. This is a place my wife and I go to often when we’re looking for a quick bite to eat that’s not too expensive. I have also tried their crunchy tacos, which are also very good but I will say they do not travel that well and are better to eat there. If you’re looking for a no-frills Mexican spot that won’t break the bank, this is the place for you.

The most horrible nacho I have ever eaten and bland, they didn't put anything in it... they only gave me strips with cheese and beans 😔😔😔

Food so so. The guacamole is bland. Salsa is alright. The chips were good, but needed to pay extra - they didn't come with Salsa or guacamole. The flauta had chewy chicken. Thr rice and Quesadilla were good. Very expensive for what you get. I'd suggest going somewhere like avacado or hacienda, where you get much better food and for a better price.

Might be the worst Mexican food I’ve ever had. Been going here for years and I’ve finally given up despite its convenience. They claim “authentic Mexican food” but I’ve never tasted such bland soggy and dry food in my life. El gallo dorado is down the street a bit and blows this place away.

I thought the food was excellent here. The waitress was really nice! I felt bad she was the only one working with alot of tables. Great restaurant!

Really good Mexican food. I had the veggie burrito with no dairy. They put sliced avocado in it and a pumpkin seeds! It’s delish! Highly recommended. Can’t wait to go back.

1st time today. Won't go back. Our order was missing 1 burrito and we paid for it. The 1 burrito we did get wasn't beef as we ordered - it was black bean. The soft tacos were dry and bland. Pricey for what we got. The 1 star given is for the nachos which were great.

Worst Mexican food I’ve ever eaten, Taco Bell does way better and I don’t even like them. Whatever you do don’t let the reviews let you to believe this food is good unless you like bland garbage. Spent 60$ here for garbage for my family we all through it out. Also refuses to sell unless wearing a mask my dentist doesn’t even make me wear one coming in.

I have been going there for 17 years and the food is delicious! Authentic homemade Mexican food. Friendly staff and speedy service. My kids enjoy the quesadillas (they’re both under 5) and my youngest gets down with the crunchy beef taco. Whether it’s nachos/tacos/burritos/chimichangas, Mexicali has something for everyone. Don’t sleep on their rice pudding!

We live in town and this is always a favorite. If you want fresh, tasty Mexican food, this is the place you want to go. It is authentic Mexican food and not chrap Taco Bell. Everything is cooked and prepared right there!

Mexicali Rose is a tiny, cozy warm & friendly place, with REAL homemade food (quite a change the 'Bell' and it's high-fructose-corn-syrup laden menu, or the cookie-cutter frozen-food Mexican restaurants with 20 microwaves in the back) The staff is friendly, the chips and taco shells especially delightful, and whole place very laid back and local. the food is delicious, and most portions large (the burrito was enormous). The few 1-2 star reviews seem to be out-of-state'ers and/or over-entitled folks who don't get the concept of a small, family-run local business.

I live in Newtown, and for whatever reason never visited this place. Someone who I worked with, who was a Mexican native swore this was the best Mexican restaurant she had seen north of the Rio Grande. Still for years I never went there. Then on a lark, we went there. Oh my! We have been there three or four times now. Wow. This is amazingly good food. You think you have had good tortilla chips and salsa. Until you have had the FRESH real deal, you don't know. We recently had the jalapeno poppers. They are amazing. Not like any of the frozen bar-food impostors. We have had full meals with burritos and rice and re-fried beans etc. Everything we have ever had was amazing. We LOVE this place. We have in the past dined in the restaurant. Its not fancy but it was fun to see local Hispanics coming there to pick up orders. Our most recent trip was take-out (due to Covid-19 restrictions). Their portions are generous. We were able to have two lunches on what we ordered for one lunch. We love these guys. We wish them well.

I came here for lunch. Inside, they have several tables to dine in. I ordered a soft taco with pork ($2.35) and a bowl of chili ($3.25). Right after I placed my order, they brought out a bowl of chips and cup of flavorful salsa. They brought out a small bowl of chili first. It was very hearty filled with ground beef and beans. I added some hot sauce for heat as it was not spicy. The taco came next. It was loaded with shredded pork and topped with chopped tomato and onion. The pork was very tasty. The meal reminded me of food I had in Costa Maya and Cozumel. It was very good. I was pleased with my meal. Very friendly service.

This is some of the best, most authentic Mexican food to be found on any part of the globe. Exquisitely seasoned and cooked with great pleasure and care, the food here never disappoints. From the pork mole, to the chimichangas ... to the vegetarian burrito you’ll realize what a crown jewel this restaurant is. Look, I love vegetarians because that leaves more meat for me, but even I have just eaten the vegetarian burrito and was happily satiated. By the way, they are also some of the most friendly people you will ever meet. VIVA MEXALI ROSE !!!

The food is very authentic and filling. This is a small business run by family. There are only about 6 tables which makes the ambience very old world and home style. Everyone I know who goes there loves the place, food, and staff. I had the tacos. 2 were more than enough and very tasty! I will go back there again and will pass the word around to those of us who love Mexican style food.

Homemade Carrot with Chipotle soup and tomato soup are spectacular. Order chicken with Pablana sauce and you'll definitely come back for more.

With so much so-called "Mexican" food being offered its great to have a place that reminds you of the true, rich culinary tradition from our neighbor to the south.

I used to come here on occasion my uncle when I was a younger as he lived not far from here before he moved; I always enjoyed the food. Recently my brothers and our wives were passing through from a trip down to the coast and on the way back home we stopped her. It's even better than I remembered. Food is delicious, service is fast and very friendly. The chips are AMAZING! My wife got shrimp in a poblano sauce that hit just a little heat with an amazing flavor. I want to work this in to the rotation of places we go it is so good. This is one of those small mom and pop stores that has authentic food you know is cooked with love. Thank you for the great food!

Always consistent. Carrot chipotle soup is a must when they have it. Roasted pork, which you can get as a meal or in a burrito or taco is the best around. Flan is amazing. Have been coming to mexicali rose since we moved here 8 years ago and have never been disappointed. The family who runs the restaurant is always accommodating... super nice. You might have to wait a bit for your food if they are busy (as they also do take out orders), but well worth it!

The owners are at the top of the game. Everything reflects quality and passion. Starting with the complementary fresh salsa and chips will give you an assurance of having come at the right place. Very reasonable priced burritos $7ish. Tacos $4ish, and other mains $14ish My family absolutely loves it.

Sorry, I’ve never had worse “Mexican “ food in my life. It truly was tasteless & unappetizing. I hope no one thinks this is true Mexican food. Expensive for such poor quality food. Don’t waste your pesos. The place itself is “quaint “. No frills here which is fine. Certainly no expense spent on interior design. Initially thought this might be a “true authentic “ find. Wrong! Adios!

Mexicali Rose is a great place to grab a burrito or taco for a quick dinner. The freshly made salsa and homemade tortilla chips are outrageously delicious!

Vegetarian black bean burrito is super, pepitos on top, fresh made salsa and corn chips... nothing comes from a can or a jar. 15 years of dining here and every meal a winner.

Note: There used to be two Mexicali Rose restaurants but they lost their Bethel lease so for now it is only in Newtown. Ultra casual Mexican food made with love. No pretension here just 7 tables, funky art on the walls, colorful checkerboard floors and lots of charm in its own way. I lived all over California and this reminded me of a place I might happen upon after a long day at the beach, and immediately make it my go-to Mexican place. No guacamole made table-side (couldn't get a cart between the tables!) like so many places so score one for them for not getting on that trend. What they did serve were great nachos, excellent thick chips, and one of the best salsas around. Chile Relleno was really good - tender hot, spiced well. Delicious. Shrimp fajitas was distinguished by the poblano sauce and the shrimp themselves were large and flavorful. Not a sizzling make them yourself dish, so be forewarned. Rice and beans were excellent. Drinks come out of a refrigerator unit and alcohol is served as well if you are so inclined. This is a family business and it has been around for 20 years. They care about the food and it shows. You don't come here looking for fancy but what you do get is some of the best home-made Mexican food in CT.

Great family owned and managed Mexican restuarant. They can't do enough for their customers! The food is always freshly made, great portions and flavor. They offer wonderful salsa and homemade chips. The ambiance takes you to little place in Mexico.

Good value for the money. Probably the best Mexican food in the area considering that there are not that many marzipan restaurants nearby. Feels like you are truly eating a home cooked Mexican meal. Do not go here for ambience.

20 years in business and the staff and meals still brim over with enthusiasm! Authentic black bean soup, dynamite salsa with addictive home-made chips then into the main courses: my favorite is their pork dishes-- the staff will accommodate "off the menu". Authentic Mexican sodas available! Great fun that always me with a good taste in my mouth.
