Real German food. I wish I lived in the restaurant & bar. Bed, TV, hofbrau.

Love everything about the Peoria Hofbrau! Everything I've eaten or drank here has been wonderful and the staff will provide recommendations if you ask for them. I ate there every month when I traveled to Peoria and now that I'm not, I really miss the place. Cozy, relaxing, great food and beer on tap... you can't go wrong.

Best German potato salad in the US!

This is a homey, dark, neighborhood place. The staff are always great, and will allow substitutions. Food is awesome, we love it. It's a lot of food here, so no need to order appetizers, There are a ton of beers on draft, the staff can generally describe them really well which helps. This was the first time I had been here drove by numerous times a week wife and I went out for date night and she took me here . The food was fantastic I will be back .

Super place to eat, great food and staff!

I have been going to this place off and on for 30 years and I generally always have had a good experience. For some reason the past 2 -3 years my experiences have been less than stellar. I've been treated rudely on 3 occasions now. Especially when its busy. The food has always been good but again something has been missing the past 2 to 3 years. I'm not sure what's been going on but I'm going to have to pass on stopping here for a while. I thought it was just bad luck or something but 3 bad experiences. I'm out.

I and 3 other friends came in on Dec 7th 2019. We were greeted by a waitress. Who instantly gave us a aditude. She said we could eat but had to be out in a hour. We were the first people to get there's as a advanced party. We were coming from the local WWII event. We always have at least 40 people or more show up. We decided to stay. We got to our seat. We were given small menus with no meals on it. Then it took about 10 minutes for her to ask us if we would like appitsers. Right after we got there. Another group of reenactors sat down and were ask right away what they would like. And were given real dinner menus. We were never asked if we would like to order anything besides appetizers.We left very un satisfied. As far as we are concerned we will never be back and will tell all the other reenactors never to eat at this restaurant again.

Great food, great service and a "Cheers" atmosphere!!

Our waitress was so nice. It’s cute inside. But it’s way overpriced and the portion sizes are so small. The “homemade” beer cheese is a cold cheese spread with Ritz and bagged pretzels for like $13?! Pork on a stick was literally ONE stick of pork... the tiniest piece of salmon and an itty bitty scoop of potatoes. I was highly disappointed and don’t plan to ever go back.

My father called this place a bar that "made good." I called it some delicious German cuisine. I sampled quite a few dishes and was impressed all the way round.

Been coming here for 20 years off and on. Great beer selection, always love the german drafts and specialty beers. Food is great -- always love the special plates. Friendly, cozy, and not your typical "bar". Go here for atmosphere, beer, food, and you can't go wrong.

It has been too long since we have eaten here. As we say eating one of the best meals we have had in a long time, we asked each other why we don't come here more often. We decided it is partly the location. We don't come to this part of Peoria often so we just don't think about it. The other part is our picky children. What kid doesn't love a good hot dog? Ours. We did note that they have added nachos to the menu so there is hope. 🤞 So tonight we were dining without kids and The Hofbrau popped into my mind. I am so glad it did! I had the Jager Schnitzel and my husband had the Sauerbraten. We both picked the creamed spinach. I added a side of sauerkraut because you have to. The meals were perfect. Tender meat, flavorful gravy, and spaetzel come together to make my ancestors happy. They offer a wide variety of beers with the German beers being highlighted. My husband always tries something new. The decor probably hasn't changed since they opened over 35 years ago other than the Spuds Makenzie lamp at the bar. It is dark, lots of wood, tables are shoehorned into the dining area, the bar area is tight too. My husband loves the atmosphere there. I figure why fix what isn't broken. I'm there for the food and the place is clean so I'm happy. The staff is welcoming and helpful. Service is quick but not rushed. Our waitress checked back several times. As we left, the hostess invited us back. If you haven't been to The Hofbrau, you owe it to yourself to go

My favorite place for German food!

I prefer veal schnitzel, true wiener schnitzel, over pork, schweine schnitzel, but otherwise it was pretty good. A bit pricy, but the hefeweizen is great!

Went for late-night meal with family and thoroughly enjoyed beers, service and food. Waitress was very good, pleasant and fast. I love German beer and the tap and bottle selection was very satisfying. I will return if I find myself in Peoria for certain, as there are many more taps to try!

We haven't been to the Hofbrau in several years. And I don't know why. We arrived early evening to find the dining room scarcely occupied, and found a small table in a back corner. Our waitress took our drink order and offered discounted happy hour specials. We settled on the Jager Schnitzel with spaetzles and red cabbage. Everything was outstanding. Highly recommended. Can't wait to go back for the Rouladen and Saurbraten.

I really enjoy coming here. They have a great selection of beers from German to local craft. Also the food has been great every time we have visited.

My husband has wanted to go to this place for a very long time. I don't like to try new things. Our group of 6 was sharing bites of e everything and it was all simply delicious. We'll be returning often.

We stopped in on our way south into town. If you're hungry just know that lunch is from 11:00 to 2:00 and dinner starts at 4:00. They do have a many menu in between those times. Construction almost made us miss it. Milwaukee (hometown) is huge German influence and eats. Decent parking space for corner lot. First thing you see when you walk in is the huge beer list they have. I love my Hofbrau, what can I say. There's traditional German music softly playing in the background so you can have a conversation AND sing along. They have a decent lunch menu. all inexpensive items. We chose the sliced corn beef sandwich and Polish on a brat bun. We each had their red potato salad. I was pleasently surprised that it was a hot homemade mashed red potato salad. The service was quick and attentive. Would totally come back here next time in town

Best German restaurant in Central Illinois

I've lived in Central Illinois for 19 years and just tried this place. It's great.

I can't tell you about the food, we were really excited to go. We are from Decatur and were very disappointed. We got to the parking lot and my husband is in a wheel chair. I got him out of the car only to find out there was NO wheelchair access at all. I went inside and asked and they said they could get some people to pick his chair up. Well my husband is a large man and picking him up is not only unfeasible but also very humility. I thought this day in time if you owned a restaurant it had to be wheelchair accessible. We would have made a trip to Peoria to eat German Food very often if we could have gotten in. Very sad.

Had dinner here before a Marcus King Band show. This is real German food and a great beer line up too.Prices are fair for the proportions. The staff is out standing, our waiter was great. Desert looked good, dinner was to big for our group to have any. We all be back! Order when u walk in, and food and beer is served to you. Restaurant is small, dark and cozy. Staff is nice and attentive. Food is the bomb! On tap beer is smooth!

We are Florida residents that traveled to Peoria to visit winter friends from Florida who are summer residents in Peoria. They invited us to dinner at the Hofbrau. It is a delicious slice of German hospitality and cuisine in middle America. We ate pork chops, Jaeger schnitzel, barbecued ribs, red cabbage, spaetzel and drank a light German beer with slices of lemon. The schnitzel was flavorful, tender and light. The red cabbage was slightly sweet and fresh. The spaetzel was fluffy and buttery. The beer was flavorful but light. The server allowed us to stay as long as it took for us to "catch up" with our friends. Great evening out.

I've loved this place for 20+ years. I've never eaten anything that I didn't love. My son chose this place for his graduation dinner! So good!!!

Sad we waited so long to try this historic spot. Small, but will take reservations. Very classic and vintage. Really enjoyed trying some actual German food since it's such a big part of my family history!

Always excellent food - truly authentic German fare.. You'll be paying $20-30 per person for dinner, and it's so very worth it! If you find that expensive, than use it for a special occasion restaurant - you won't be disappointed! The interior gives a very comfortable, dark, brew pub feel much like German pubs. It is a small place - I'd recommend reservations on Fri or Sat nights. Forget those hit-n-miss chain restaurants - go for authentic. I dare you to try not to speak German during dinner - you'll fail!

Best place in Peoria to eat that's not a chain

I went here for my Birthday. My family is German and I was looking forward to some hearty meal like when I was a kid. The place was packed and when we didn't have a reservation they worked to fit us in. Service was good. The food was awesome and I got a shot of house schnapps for a complimentary bday treat. All the adults had a beer with the meal. The beer and wine selection was excellent but a bit above market value--especially when you have to pour it out of the can. There were a lot of decorations and German themed knickknacks which I liked but also the general air of dustiness--it didn't seem like anything had been changed or updated in a long time. It was very dark. Not so dark to fall down, but dark enough I couldn't really see the food very well--and I wanted to because it was good. When it is that dark I wonder if things are clean. I want to stress I didn't see anything dirty, but the lighting was a connotation for me. Generally speaking, I think it was a bit overpriced. However, they're always packed and make great food. I don't think they'll miss me and I wish them success but thats too much for sausage.

Been to Germany several times and Hofbrau easily rates high with authentic, classic German cuisine. The soups are some of the best around and the service has always been very pleasant and kind. A great all-around restaurant. Hands down the best lunch specials ever.

I have loved this place since I was 12 years old. I wish they had a second location in East Peoria.

Since 1984 they've been doing great German food. Great atmosphere, like being transported back to Germany, without the jet lag. I recommend for appetizers , muscles, Hofbrau garlic cheddar cheese dip basket, and wine herring. I'm saddened that they do not have the calamari anymore. I recommend for dinner the, Pork chops, duck and schnitzels. Great creamed spinach, German potato salad and red cabbage as a side dish. And the whole meal is rounded out with a great German beer selection and a wonderful staff.

We had an excellent lunch. Very friendly staff. Service was great. The dining area was very nice. There was a continuous stream of customers coming in during the time we were there. I thought that spoke well for the restaurant.

This place is a surprise gem on a road trip with wonderful German food and the best atmosphere around.

We had to wait to be seated, but it was definitely worth the wait. Food is always on point, environment is cosy feeling, definitely a pub atmosphere.

Having lived in Germany, I can say this was authentic German food. I had the Weiner Schnitzel and wasn't disappointed. Good selection of draft beer too. Service was outstanding and very friendly.

Extremely great German style food. Employees are fantastic. We came all the way from NC and was not aware that a reservation was neccessary, they still took five of us in and made room for us. Food was extremely good. Authentic as you get. We also bought two t-shirts to remind us of our visit. Thanks again for a great evening. One more off the bucket list for the family.

Awesome atmosphere and genuine German food! The walls have vintage posters, stain glass pieces, and a whole wall covered in brass plates of winners in the World Beer Tour. They even decorated for Christmas with some warm multi-colored lights which really added to the atmosphere as opposed to taking away from it. Even ordering from the counter after looking at your menu is a little thing that perhaps unintentionally adds on to the warmth and comfort of the experience. I had a couple types of sausages, which were delicious, along with the sauerkraut. I would recommend the German Potato Salad as a side if you're getting a sandwich.

My group had a reservation but I didnt see them yet however when I got in I wasnt greeted by anyone that worked there, asked if I needed a table. I waited about 10 minutes and then my group arrived.
