We live down the street and have been going to Playa since we moved here in late 2020. This is, by far, our favorite Mexican place in the area. We adore the entire family who owns the establishment. This is authentic Mexican food made with love! The owners are so warm and inviting, and we love Javier’s beautiful live music every night!

A little hidden gem. Pretty decent prices for the amount of food you get. I went after 3pm and was the only person there! Their outside area is nice but the cicadas might be a bit deafening. I’m not much of a drinker but they offer beers and margs. The decorations are bright and colorful with fresh flowers on all tables! A nice place for a quick, cheap and amazing Mexican! Will definitely be back

Loved this place! The chips and guacamole were fresh and tasty, the tilapia was perfectly cooked, and the ceviche had a delightful citrus kick. The chicken and shrimp tacos were juicy and flavorful, and the flan was the perfect sweet ending. The staff was incredibly friendly, and we loved the live music and cozy outdoor seating. Exceptional service and atmosphere made it a memorable visit. Highly recommended!

Party of 8, unfortunately, with the place being small, there was a wait. The service was very slow and it took a long while to get chips and drinks. The chicken and steak was good, but the group beef was very bland. Would not recommend the ground beef. Music was good but very loud.

The food was authentic Mexican, and the people made us feel comfortable. The salsa was hands down spicy, over all I'll give them my business everytime I visit Florida. 😊😊

We have to stop here at least once each vacation. It is so good and the quality is great. I always get the chimichangas which are amazing and my husband gets the fajitas. Both awesome.

Literally the best restaurant in Saint Augustine Beach. I take my whole family here and it's the best time! The service is so great and the family who owns it are the nicest people in town! I recommend the super hot and tasty chips, a margarita, chimichangas and the Fried ice cream to finish the meal!

Tried to check it out last week but it was closed. Maybe next time. My review is solely based on the fact that I viewed this restaurant online and based on the fact it showed open I drove there only to find it was closed. Unfortunately I was not able to eat there so I can not review the food, service, or atmosphere.

The food is fantastic, the staff is great and the price is worth it. We went there for dinner on our first night and went back for lunch later in the week. Will definitely go back the next time we’re in town.

I really wanted to like this place but the food was pretty bland. Not much flavor in the tacos and enchiladas. Prices are cheap and this local place was quaint. Season it up.

Margarita was good...food was horrible. I wanted to stop at a small, local place & I had high hopes. The lunch special of an enchilada (4 bites worth) and 2 fish tacos was a joke. A dried out piece of thin fish on what tasted like a microwaved corn soft shell. Nothing else on the tacos!! Lesson learned.

This unimposing little Mexican restaurant turned out to be an amazing dining experience. The service was extraordinary, the food hot and delicious, reasonably priced and the atmosphere very charming.

Nice place with nice people and disappointing food that is priced too high. The chicken enchilada was boiled chicken in a flour tortilla, that was it with a little green sauce on it. So disappointing.

came around 2:30-3 seemed to be slow time for them but the Food was yummy, service was good, very cute place. family owned and operated, you don't see those often. wish we could've heard the musician play but will just have to come back for dinner.

Read the individual reviews!!! I should have gone to burrito works, just north of here!!! I was duped by the 4.7 star ranking (as many other reviewers stated). There was one other table seated in 'the outside area' when we arrived. Our server was terrible!!! I literally had to yell to get his attention for 2nd drinks ($11 house margaritas), he kept avoiding our table in the corner, even though the two other servers were doing fine tending to the tables in the room. The food was okay: small portions but fair for the price. Chips tasted store bought, salsa was pace picante at best (as others have reviewed). No rice with the 'combinations' and only shredded chicken or ground beef as options. When our dinner arrived, my son's "chicken" enchilada was simply a tortilla with sauce on it (no ingredients inside). I had to whistle at our server to get his attention and point this out to him. They did replace it with a new one. After all four of us were clearly done eating (napkins on plates & stacked). I asked our server for our check please. 10 minutes went by.... the table across from us then asked their (different) server for their check, it arrived, they paid with card, server ran card, returned and they signed & left... Still no sign of our server, nor check. At almost 20 minutes of waiting for our check, I walked to the cash register to ask for it. Our server saw me and only then brought it to me 10 feet from him. There was a line out front to get into the restaurant at this point. Why wouldn't they want to get us our check and clear our table? I wasn't going to wait for our server to run our credit card, so I pulled out cash, trying to figure what kind of tip to leave (not wanting to wait for change either). Only then, the owner came over to talk to us. I described our frustration, she asked "how can I fix this?" (At that point, you cannot! In fact, you made it awkward for me while trying to count out my cash for a non-deserved tip!) The owner kept saying "this is a family business" (so, most Mexican restaurants are), then she tried giving me an excuse: "our kitchen is really backed up..." 1) it was not backed up when we ordered our food with only 1 other table occupied 2) what does a "backed up kitchen" have anything to do with terrible service (not checking on drink refills, chips & salsa) and taking 20+ minutes to bring a check to a table after they requested it? Nothing!!! Our bill was $115, including 2 margaritas each, for my wife and I. Anyone who gave this place 4 stars or above must have been part of the family business.

Wonderful family owned restaurant serving authentic Mexican food. We stopped for lunch after spending the morning in the crowds in St. Augustine. We were seated on the screened in patio where we enjoyed a cool breeze and a great meal! Highly recommend the Chak-Mool. Smoky spicy and delicious. Service was friendly and welcoming, food was amazing. If you are looking for great food outside the busy downtown area, look no further!

Decent food at a very reasonable price.

My wife and I came in yesterday for lunch. Everything was delicious. My wife had the fajitas, they were pipping hot and excellent. I had the mestizo quesadilla, loved the flavor of the quesadilla. We had fried ice cream for dessert and it was huge! Would come back again!

Oh my gosh, cheap food! Really I mean it the chicken and sides were disgusting. The chicken had a weird grainy texture and the sides were just straight out of cans. On top of that, it took 20 minutes before the waiter took our order. Overall we had a really bad time here. And then on top of that the bill was just so ridiculously high for a few tacos. I would avoid this place!

Had a take out order with a few cocktails. Margarita could have been better, but Large Model on tap was outstanding. Steak fajitas, beans, chimichanga, and taco were really damn good. Worked in Pilsen in Chicago for years and it was very compatable. Waitress great too. Price just what you'd expect in this economy.

Nice people, but not so good service. We ordered chicken enchiladas, but recueved beef. The food had barely any flavor and was cold when served, not even steaming. The Beef we didn't order had no flavor. Beans where okay, rice was okay, though both cold. Strawberry margurita had so little lachohal, you couldn't taste it. They did good to remake it. Atmosphere was alright. Smaller than anticipated. Bathrooms are right across from the serving window for the waiter. Kind of gross know that before I left. Their in house halbinero sauce was fire. The menu was very small and had 2-3 burrito options. Ended up going with the puello con Churizo. No flavor really. All and all, it was way worse than Google reviews put out. I hope they improve. They have a nice place with potential.

Wife and I went here during the week. We were excited to finally go here. I ordered 3 tacos chorizo, pollo asada, carnitas. It was pretty bland. Needed more salt and seasonings. We ordered the chips and salsa with the extra hot salsa. The chips were ok and the salsa was a step below pace salsa you get from the store. It was closer to tomato paste ketchup than mexican salsa. The habenero salsa was vinegar and spicy but no real flavor. My wife ordered the carne asada plate and the meat was under seasoned and wife said it tasted boiled. The service however was top notch. Really we wanted to like this place but the food needed to be tasted by the cook before being delivered to the customer. They focused on speed and not taste.

We usually go to this restaurant but this time we decided to use Grub Hub and stay home. However, due to no fault of the restaurant, the Grub Hub order was incomplete (an error on Grub Hub's end of the app) and what we did receive looked like it had been tossed around and thrown on the ground. I am addressing this with Grub Hub but when I called the restaurant, they could not have been more helpful and insisted in "making it right for us" - even though it was not there fault. Amazing customer service! We decided to go to the restaurant rather than call another delivery service (we should have gone there in the first place). The service at Playa Chac Mool is just amazing: friendly, caring, and quick. Our server (Shaura) was the same person who answered the phone when I called and she is such a fine example of what guest service is all about. In fact, everyone working at the restaurant is friendly and helpful. The food is top notch, authentic Mexican food. One of us had an enchilada plate and I had a combination plate with a chimichanga, enchilada, and a tamale. This is the only local Mexican restaurant where the food reminds me of the delicious food I had when I lived in Mexico years ago. Great food and excellent service - why did we even try to had this delivered when dining at Playa Chac Mool is a wonderful experience.

We come back every time we come to st Augustine. We are from Indiana and it's some of the best authentic Mexican food we've had! We dined and listened to light jazz. We will always come back here when we are in st Augustine!

Delicious food and outstanding customer service.

Foiled by the high rating review. I totally went based on the reviews and was shocked at how disgusting this place is. But the grass parking is really cool. Prices are on the cuisine end, but this is absolutely not Mexican cuisine. In all fairness, I'm Hispanic and I've been spoiled having lived in Mexico and had authentic food. Plus I live by a Cafe Rio where I'm from.

This restaurant was rated 4.7 on Google so we decided to try it. Very disappointed! It looked dirty, and the small inside dining room was full of stuff and looked to be in disarray, so we chose to eat in the screened in area. The beef enchiladas had a brown sauce, almost like a gravy, which my friend was not a fan. My chicken enchiladas were okay. The ladies' bathroom was not nice. Our waitress was fantastic! She was friendly, helpful and brought our order out quickly. Not a place I will wish to return to!

small familial place. food is authentic, and savory. they have live entertainment in the evenings that very enjoyable. their only knock is their margaritas are wine based rather than tequila.

I will start off by saying we are not super familiar with the area and we’re only visiting while on vacation. We received multiple recommendations from locals and the restaurant had very high reviews. I was extremely disappointed in the food of this restaurant. The main issue is pricing. The pricing was absurd. We got mediocre queso, good salsa but awful chips, for all of that it costs 11. The queso was a very very small portion and the chips were a little stale and definitely store bought. Main meal dishes were anywhere from $14-$25+ and were very small portions. I understand this is a small family owned restaurant but it seemed as if that was the excuse for store bought, small and pricy portions. Service was excellent. Our waitress was extremely attentive and the atmosphere was also amazing. There was live music but not the type you would’ve imagined. It wasn’t over bearing and was just acoustics. **Overall this isn’t a “bad” place to eat. However this is an overpriced and mediocre restaurant and if you are planning on spending 120$ + for a family of 5 then i’d recommend somewhere else. **

Our meal was exactly what we were looking for. Authentic Mexican food served by a fabulous staff. The customer service and food is high quality. My husband particularly enjoyed his pollo chacmool and horchata. I had the mahi tacos which were also excellent. Thank you to the staff for offering a lovely experience!

I love a good hole in the wall place and this place delivered. From the outside you don’t know it’s so charming inside. It is a small restaurant but cozy. It was pretty hot outside so we opted for indoor seating. I’d suggest adding more fans and maybe even enclosing with outdoor vinyl/plastic shades and putting portable HVACs out there. It’s very hot in St. Augustine and there aren’t many tables inside. We were sat promptly and greeted by waitress promptly. Our margaritas were good. We ordered the cheese nachos which were great. Then we shared shrimp fajitas which were also really good. Then we shared a flan that was delicious. The only issue was the food was very high in sodium. We were both feeling very swollen afterwards. People have medical issues so the sodium content shouldn’t be so high. The best part was the musician/singer. We thoroughly enjoyed the music. It wasn’t too loud that we couldn’t converse. It was delightful.

Heard this was the best Mexican restaurant in St Augustine. Great reviews and all. It was absolutely horrible. Both dishes were bland, not a lick of seasoning in anything they cooked. Spending $40 on 2 entrees with soft drinks you would think you get a lot more bang for your buck.

The food was yummy, the margaritas were a decent pour, the service was friendly. Don't expect typical Americanized faire. This was fresh with lots of quality ingredients. This is the perfect, off the beaten path place to stop when in St. Augustine. I'm adding this to my places to go when here.

Discovered this treasure with my friend and just loved their authentic dishes. Can't get enough. Very! Very friendly service. Just a p.s. (-1☆) on the fried ice cream, not authentic. Just ice cream rolled in cereal. It was disappointing after a great authentic meal.
