WOW! I had their Thursday night special, and the beef was tenderized and wrapped perfectly around the pickle and bacon. It did not require a steak knife it was so tender. The spaetzle was authentic (not from a box), and the brown gravy superb! I also really enjoyed the red cabbage which I think may have been simmered in bacon fat because it was super yummy. The atmosphere felt German, and the music was very authentic. The staff seemed to really care about my experience. I only wish I didn't live over 1,000 miles away because I would come here all the time. PS: The homemade chocolate cake layered with raspberry preserves and a chocolate mascarpone was amazing to finish out my meal. Highly recommend Richard's!

It’s been several years since we dined at Richard’s and a return to German cuisine was suggested by our guests. The restaurant is the same as it always has been, with an ambiance reminiscent of a German Keller, although on the street level in Brunswick. Their draught selection of imported biers remains a staple of their identity, as is the menu. Sausage, Schnitzel, and Spatzle continue to be the staples on the menu.After beginning with a baked Brie, which was served with too few pieces of bread for the portion, my Kalbsgeschnetzeltes arrived. The entree has, in the decreasing order of quantity, a buttery cream sauce, seared mushrooms, and strips of sautéed veal. Although the veal should be the star, the portion of the protein was small by most standards. My accompanying Rot Kohl and Spatzle were sufficient. Yes, the flavors are those of Deutschland; the entree portions, though, are not.

The food is absolutely amazing and the drinks are fantastic, but for the last week I've been thinking about our most recent experience. We ordered the TABLESIDE ceasar sald and were presented with 4 whole romaine strips and burnt croutons on a plate. For a $22 ceasar salad, I expect it the way it's advertised. When we asked the waitress, her reply was "oh I don't do that anymore". We watched 3 other people receive their tableside ceasar salads as advertised so this was this waitresses personal choice. Honestly I didn't even mind that it wasn't made at the table, but I do mind not being told ahead of time and if you are going to serve whole romaine strips, please also provide a knife.

I just had the most wonderful meal. We went for my birthday tonight. I took a DNA test and learned I am mostly German. I had been wanting to try this restaurant forever. It was AMAZING! The staff, the food, the atmosphere. We had a wonderful time and I was so happy we went there for my birthday. We made a pact to go back once a month from now on. Best place to eat in Brunswick. Highly recommend. I had the Jagerschnitzel with mash potatoes and Brussels sprouts with carrots. 10 out of 10!

Limited hours and unless you make a reservation you may wait awhile. Ordered the mushroom appetizer and they were good, but only 3 so not worth the price. I filled up on the free bread and pretzels. Had a flight of beer and that was great. Was not able to have any more small beers unless it was a flight. The sausage was greesy and disappointing in flavor. The cabage and potatoes were good, but again not worth the price for a German meal.

First time at Richards and I can say I'm thoroughly impressed!!! My husband was like a kid in a candy store with the draft selection, the food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was very enjoyable! We will return, with friends!

Richards is right down town and there's plenty of parking out back. The place is nice, a bit on the dark side, but we felt welcomed and we were comfortable. Not that I ever left the country but from what I understand the food is authentic. I will say it's good, but given my undistinguished pallet the bratwurst's basically taste like the sausage you get at the sausage kitchen in Lisbon, (dare I say spicy hot dogs? Not like a pork sausage or even an Italian sausage, just different). The Wienerschnitzel is good as is the German Sampler but my dishes have been limited. I will go back and try something different, but I got to say that German food is new to me so perhaps I'm not the best judge of Richards authenticity, but it was good. Overall it is a nice place, seems pretty clean, friendly fast service and definitely worth a trip when you want something different. The prices are slightly elevated but that's true of most restaurants now a days. I will return and try Richards again.

Schnitzel was a little dry. Restaurant was very busy, had to sit at the bar to eat. Apparently, the hours that they are open have been reduced, but it was late is the season. Definitely should call ahead for reservations. They have Kostritzer, my favorite German beer.

If there's a more authentic German restaurant out there I struggle to imagine what it would be. Great selection of traditional German fare, drink, beers and dessert. Decor was indisputably German right down to the traditional music playing in the background. All members of our party had something different and all enjoyed. The apple strudel for dessert was a particular hit. After this first discovery we look forward to our next visit to try something else!

Even with reservations it took 20 minutes after arrival to be seated. The hostess ignored us and we were left outside having to keep coming back inside to ask if our table was ready. Once seated it took 10 minutes for a server to come to the table. We were seated 20 minutes before our order was taken, 30 minutes to get bread, and it took over an hour to be served our dinner. After being seated 1 hr 45 min we were desperate for the check, but the server was absent and no one else checked in on us. After being seated for 2 hrs we finally were given our bill so we could leave. We were sitting there with empty dishes and glasses and ignored even at the end of our time when only 2 other tables remained. It was impossible to get water at our table or any refills. As for the food, we were never told any specials or veg of the day, the bread rolls were good, pretzels seemed to be made from frozen. None of us enjoyed our side dishes - bread dumplings were dry and dense, hot potato, spatzle, weinkraut all left uneaten. Most of the food was out dated, overcooked, and heavily sauced. The only item at our table that got a good review was the burger. I wanted to love this place, but 1 hr to be served and over 2 hrs to complete service is just unacceptable

We don't get the opportunity to eat much German food. And when we travel to the Brunswick area (usually during the week), Richard's is usually closed. So we were happy to be able to make a reservation for a Friday night. While my tropical sangria was not particularly German, it was tasty. And my husband enjoyed his beer flight. For an appetizer, we shared a savory strudel, filled with ham, asparagus and cheddar cheese. Absolutely delicious, with a nice, fresh asparagus. We wanted to try all the German choice, so split the German sampler, with included bratwurst (grilled pork and veal sausage), bauernwurst (steamed beef sausage), gulasch (braised beef in a Bavarian style bier sauce), sauerbraten (sweet and sour German beef pot roast), wienerschnitzel (breaded pork tenderloin with lemon, anchovy and caper garnish) and jagerschnitzel (breaded pork tenderloin with mushroom-herb sauce). And a variety of German side dishes: spatzle (egg noodles), klosse (bread dumpling), heisser kartoffelsalat (hot potato salad), rot kohl (red cabbage) and weinkraut (sauerkraut). My favorites were the jagerschnitzel, spatzel and rot kohl, while my husband liked the sauerbraten best. We took the apple strudel back to our hotel to eat for breakfast because we couldn't resist, but were so full. Definitely would go back if we had a chance.

Love coming here for dinner. I lived in Germany for 2 years and Richard’s as authentic as you can get over here. They also have a good amount of German beers on tap!

Käse spätzle is really good! (Kind of like mushroom Mac and cheese)

I've come to really enjoy my experiences at Richards. I mostly dine at the bar where I'm waited on by Tina, who is so kind and lovely to chat with.(Sarah is fantastic too). All entrees are served with a pretzel and delicious home made mustard. As well as butter rolls they make from scratch daily that are quite honestly one of the best rolls I've ever had. Flakey, buttery heaven. On my most recent dinner I had jagerschnitzel with spatzle and garlic mashed potatoes and it was liking having a cozy, comforting hug on a plate. It was just what I wanted on a cold winter night. My only critique of improvement is that I sometimes find the dishes need a bit of salt. But salt and pepper shakers are at every table, so that's not a big issue. I hope people continue to support this restaurant that's been a mainstay in Brunswick for many years. It's a testament to how great of a place it really is!

A cozy, family friendly, German themed gem. Fantastic German beers on tap (including Weihenstephaner Korbinian when I was there) and pretty authentic dishes as well from what I could tell. I had the Sauerbraten with red cabbage and roasted veggies and it was all very tasty (if a bit sweet for my taste). The pretzel with mustard and buttered rolls that are given as an appetizer were really tasty as others have mentioned, I'm sure. Plus the service was friendly and attentive, and the decor was old-fashioned and homey. Highly recommended for dinner solo, with your SO or with family/friends!

Our nice server, Lori, made the whole evening even better. Seems like we tried so many different items from the menu and enjoyed it all. Great selection of German beers to accompany the meal.

Richard’s consumes the building front and inhibits signage for their neighbor restaurants. This inhabits the other half of the building and the restaurants, which I am sure pay good money to the property owners, from being seen by passers by. Richards has every right to advertise but stepping on the business next door and inhibiting their ability to be seen is shameful!! Do better Richards. I will not return until you give your neighbor better access to advertising on the front of the building!!

Best German Restaurant this side of Dusseldorf!

If you are in Maine and want to take a break from seafood, I strongly recommend Richard's. Over the course of two meals, my wife, son, and I enjoyed sauerbraten, pork schnitzel, haddock filet, chicken in a cream sauce, and shrimp and scallops. Most of the entrees were quite good except for an overcooked egg on my schnitzel Holstein and a somewhat heavy sauce on my wife's shrimp and scallops. The sides (spaetzle, warm potato salad, and red cabbage) were excellent. The servers were efficient and mostly personable. The restaurant offers a good choice of Germans beers and a reasonable selection of wine.

Got stared at by multiple patrons at the restaurant. Got told by wait staff that they had tables reserved (mind you there are 4 free tables in plain sight, and it was 7:15pm - 45 minutes before closing). Guess ethnic people don't belong in a "german" restaurant.

The food at Richard's was nothing short of fantastic! My wife and I both got the German sampler because we couldn't choose just one dish. If you are looking for a combination of sweet and savory, this is your best bet! Not to mention the pretzel and fluffy roll that accompanied them. Both dishes were more than filling and completely satisfied us.

We were walking down Main Street in Brunswick, Maine and accidentally found this wonderful German restaurant. Sarah, our server was wonderful and the food was sooo very good. After living in Germany, it is hard to find German food that one thinks is good But the food was great and the German beer was wonderful. Lovely, Lovely, Lovely, Sure wished we lived closer.

Great food. Had a baurenwurst appetizer and it was an amazing sausage. Can tell it's homemade. For dinner I got the goulash. Plenty of meat, tender and delicious and great flavor. For sides I chose the sauerkraut and spatzle. Both were amazing. I don't get to Brunswick but once a year but this place is always my favorite stop.

I had the braised beef with potatoes and veggies and my partner had the schnitzel with red cabbage and potatoes. A delicious and hearty meal. Didn’t give 5 stars only because it wasn’t a WOW meal, but we would definitely come back again.

I’d love to share my experience, however, I didn’t get one. I was seated, then the table next to me was seated. The waitress came over shortly after, to their table, explained the specials and vegetables/potatoes of the day, took their drink order and left. Came back with their drinks, and left. Then came back to take their full order, and left. Not once was I even acknowledged while sitting there with menus open and had a glass of water the hostess graciously poured for me. So I left. Hopefully you’ll have a better experience than I did.

I honestly don't know if authentic German food is not for me or the food here is just really bad. We had a party of seven, everyone ordered a different entree and no one like the food. A few of us couldn't eat what we ordered. I got the chicken and puff pastry dish and the "chicken breast" pieces were spongey. Staff were nice, the snail appetizer was delicious, German table bread was very good (but pretzels were stale) and the mustard for the table bread was fantastic.

Great food, excellent friendly service. Beers are fresh, delicious and served at the correct temperature. Highly recommended especially the order of the different German entrees which allows you to savor what the restaurant has to offer.

I'm half Austrian and love being able to come and get my jägerschnitzel fix. Richards has a relaxed old world tavern style atmosphere, friendly service, and the German food I crave.

I'm not an expert of German cuisine, but I do like eating. The food here was quite good and the service was excellent. We will return for sure, and this place will be on our short list of places to take family and friends when they come up to visit us. Well worth the trip.

We love it here. Authentic German cuisine served with panache. I eat as much as they serve, but you know what they say about German food ... No matter how much you eat, you are still hungry for power.

I have been here many times for dinner. The food is amazing, authentic, and super filling. Come hungry and leave super full. Staff is super attentive and food is decently priced.

I had dinner at Richard’s restaurant on Main Street in Brunswick, Maine. Coquille St. Jacques (gorgeous plump. fresh-caught sea scallops in a creamy wine sauce) with carrots, asparagus, and hot German potato salad. Plus a freshly baked soft pretzel and roll. This was just what the foodie poet doctor ordered. I will return!

This time it was for my son's birthday dinner and everything was terrific---goulash, kase spaetzle, klosse, etc Of course, plenty of good beer and excellent service! There are no German restaurants close to us so we drive 90 miles each way and it is worth the drive...great night out!

We were attending an event in Brunswick, so I looked online for a restaurant to try. I was excited to find a German one that had currywurst. I haven't had any since I was last in Germany 25 years ago. It was delicious. The service was good as well. I recommend reservations. I had made them and glad I did. They were turning people away because they were full. Dessert was yummy too.

I had dinner with 2 friends. The food was beyond compare. I enjoyed Sauerbraten with noodles and the best red cabbage I've ever had (and I'm German). Our server was very attentive and friendly. This is a great restaurant- but a word of caution...be sure you make reservations, you'll be glad you did.

The smoked pork chop dazzled, the sauerkraut was pleasantly mild, and the sides were excellent. The service was a bit slow, but other than that, highly recommended.

Richard’s was really outstanding. Wonderful beer menu, friendly service and just outstanding food. Don’t believe the negative reviews. This place is some of the best German food I’ve had outside of Germany.

This was a take-out order, so I can't comment on service or restaurant atmosphere. We have had some very nice dinners at Richard's over the years, but recently we ordered Jaegerschnitzel with potato salad and red cabbage. The schnitzel was quite good, but the potato salad had a very strong hot pepper flavor, as did the red cabbage to a lesser extent. In my experience this is not usual in German cooking I've had, and in fact I don't care for hot peppers at all and recommend such additions should be optional. Would rate this 4/5 but for this experience.
