Holy cannoli, is this food good. We opened with the potato pancakes, which were crispy AND fluffy. Flavors were delicate but delicious, and so well complimented by the applesauce. I got the souerbraten with cabbage and dumplings. Who knew that cabbage could be that good? With apple no less? Consider my mind blown like a whistle. The meat was so tender and the sauce it was served with brought me to my knees. My girlfriend got the schweisenscnitzel with potato gratin and mushroom gravy. I may not know how to spell German food, but damn do I know how to eat it. The cutlet was off the chain crispy, but not heavy, and the gravy complimented it perfectly. Service was friendly and attentive. Restaurant was a bit hot, but well worth it. I would drag myself through the flames of hell for another bite.

We were looking for a German restaurant while on our vacation, and we found Schulte & Herr. We called and made reservations fortunately, because the restaurant is very small. The food was incredible. I had the sauerbraten, and it was the best sauerbraten I've had since being in Germany. My husband had the schnitzel and enjoyed it as well. They even had Apfelschoele to drink, which was always my favorite in Germany, so that was a nice touch. I wish we did not live so far away, because I want to go back.

This was one of the restaurants on my 'bucket list' to try, and I finally did. (There are just too many good restaurants in Portland and its environs). I got the schnitzel and it was really delicious, either with just lemon juice or their homemade gravy. The German potato salad was also really good (and I don't even care that much for German potato salad in general). The basket of complimentary homemade rye bread was a nice touch -- whatever that remoulade type of spread is that they make to go with it is fantastic). Very friendly owner, nice atmosphere. I'll go back and try the marinated beef roast (rheinischer sauerbraten) that I've heard so much about.

This is such a wonderful low key, small European restaurant. Portland is so lucky to have this husband-and-wife team and still going all through the pandemic. Truly this is the very best pea soup made on the east coast and you have to have a bowl not just a cup. I come in for the schnitzel, for my birthday or when we have visitors, since we can take our own wine. Don't miss out on the tasty house baked bread and Liptauer cheese spread. Long may you two continue

Was recently looking for an alternative to the better known and often seafood oriented places in Portland and found a real hidden gem in Schulte & Herr! One block off of Congress Street, it’s a homey place serving great German food. It has a no frills but homey atmosphere, generous potions of hearty German cuisine. Just note it’s BYOB. This place is extraordinarily amazing, the taste of homemade German comfort foods, ambient down to earth vibe, and hospitality. It gives you the experience of being invited to a German friend's place and being treated to a extraordinary tasteful home cooked meal with warm and welcoming atmosphere. Also you can bring your own drink to their tables and have an amazing time with your friends and family over a nice table lighted by candles. Its a unique experience having dinner there and the price is reasonably cheap. We had 2 starters and two big main meal with two deserts and drinks for two people and it all cost less than $70 with tip. I mean wow!!!! I recommend try Schweineschnitzel which is thinly pounded pork loin, breaded and fried, served with a choice of German potato salad or potato gratin. Also Rheinischer sauerbraten was the chef's kiss. It's a marinated beef roast served with braised red cabbage and Servietten-dumplings. We will definitely stop there next time that we are visiting Portland again.

2023 Update: Schulte & Herr continues to offer a delightful evening of homemade German cuisine as always, but after our most recent visit I noticed that I had spent far to much time applauding the BYO or corkage services in an earlier review and perhaps neglected the other finer aspects of this restaurant. To be clear- I will aways commend restaurants that allow patrons to bring their own choice of dinner drinks to the table but that admirable distinction is far from the best and most notable feature of this wonderful establishment. Every item we ordered was homemade in a traditional German style, fresh and tasty. We enjoyed potato pancakes, zwiebelkuchen, spätzle and cucumber salat (it may seem minor but not every German restaurant serves an authentic and delicious cucumber salat; Schulte and Herr serves the best.) The savory wienerschnitzeI brings us back every time and the food is served gracefully by the engaging hostess Stephanie. We only have the chance to visit Portland every year or two but will always make it a point to visit Schulte and Herr when we can. (previous review) I enjoy well-cooked German recipes, but I almost always want to add a tasty traditional beverage to my meal. This is where Schulte & Herr stands out among all others. This is a BYOB establishment that effectively removes the typical high cost of bar drinks from your final bill. Bring your favorite Märzen beer or Riesling wine along with you to dinner, and they will keep it on ice and serve it to you as you wish. No charge. Perhaps you've visited other places that serve their own choices of beer and wine. Did they happen to carry your favorite Oktoberfest brew, or the exact Eiswein you enjoyed last Christmas? Probably not, and if they did happen to have a similar drink available, you can bet you'll be paying a full bottle's price for two glasses of wine. I have always considered the markup on alcoholic drinks at fine dining establishments to be the biggest rip-off of dining out. Schulte & Herr has absolutely no drink markup! Enjoy an authentic Bavarian dinner along with drinks of your choosing and actually have some money left over for dessert!

This is a gem in Portland. This is authentic German food. It reminds me of the great food I had when I went to Germany. Everything has been simply amazing. I've ordered to go a few times, and had a party of 6 here pre-covid. It's always been a great experience. The waitress maintaining all of the tables on a busy night was very impressive. She is probably the best host/waitress I've seen. She also helped me practice my German. The ambience is very comfortable and not pretentious. Candles lit at the tables. Paintings of Germany on the walls. The bread and smear was very nice. The potato cakes were amazing - crispy outside, moist inside, delicate texture. Not too vinegary, well cooked potatoes, perfect potato salad. Get the schnitzel with the mushroom gravy- it's great!! The schnitzel is very thinly cut and pounded. My friend enjoyed their split pea soup. We got the chocolate cake with raspberries to go. It was great. Definitely will be back. One of my favorite restaurants.

I’m not a German food aficionado, but I’ve visited many parts of Germany over the years and based on my experiences the Schulte & Herr delivers authenticity. I'm an idiot. I'm an idiot for only ordering the onion and gruyere tart. By the time I started eating I was in my car driving away and it was too late to turn back to order the whole menu. Simple, honest, and delicious home cooking in German style. After a week of takeout while visiting Portland, this was such a welcome change of pace. Super smoky trout on the salad, huge portions on both entrees, the POTATO PANCAKES. They even cared enough to plate things tastefully in the takeout containers. Huge smile and immense kindness from the woman (I’m assuming owner, it being Covid times and everyone working on skeleton staff). There is nothing high-brow about this place, and you absolutely don’t want it to be anything other than what it is. It’s comfort food at its best that doesn’t leave you regretting what you just ate.

Several members had the sauerbraten which was tender and tasty. The bratwurst and German potato salad were excellent and my husband had the schweinesschnitzel and potato au gratin. There was not a leftover on our plates. We finished the meal by sharing a chocolate raspberry torte. If you are interested in wine or beer with dinner, you must bring your own. Everything is delicious. We started with an onion and gruyere tart. It was so good we immediately started googling recipes to try to make at home. I had the perfectly seasoned fish goulash. It was better than the goulash I ate in Hungary. My husband had the spaetzle and loved it. It was surprisingly light. The deserts were so good we had to get them both. Saboyan is new to me, but I’ll be looking to find more of it. The chocolate and raspberry torte is even better than the torte at the Hotel Sacher in Vienna. I am a celiac and a T1 diabetic that eats keto, so dining out can be an ordeal and is never a spontaneous thing. But I did my research, called ahead to ask questions, checked their menu online and was able to have a wonderful meal of GF bratwurst, amazing homemade sauerkraut and a side salad with oil & vinegar dressing. Less than 12 carbs for the whole, fantastic meal! The staff was extremely knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. They went out of their way to please!
