My partner and I were traveling, we took a 30+ hour flight with connections back to Hartford. Eating at Shu after 30 hours of jet lag and airline food literally saved my life 🥲 I recommend first timers start with the lunch specials at the last page of the menu, even the complimentary soup that comes with the lunch special makes me wanna cry

So good; very authentic. My entire family approves of it and we’re fresh of the boat from China!

The friend who took us here is passionate about Chinese food. His son taught in China and the family visited. For several years now I have been missing good Chinese food as the offerings in our area, in my humble opinion, are not very good. I am clearly no expert in this sector, with a strong preference and experience in french and italian regional food. To make a long story short, I found our dinner here underwhelming. The three of us chose three main courses and we shared. None of them I would wish to repeat. Service was cordial, professional and the atmosphere is fine. It may well be authentic, as the menu and sign say. Perhaps I am too indoctrinated in other regional Asian cuisines or their Americanized versions. Whatever the source, I am not in any hurry to return. For em, the food was bland with the occasionalhot blast. as subtle as the totally insipid rice.

I’ve only gotten take-out, but it is so good every time. I’m vegetarian and my favorites are the cucumbers, the eggplant, and the scallion pancakes. I usually get something with tofu, as well. My partner always goes for wontons and dumplings.

I had the Kung Pao chicken & the fish kumin for a take out last night. My daughter and i found both delicious. The kumin fish was a tad bit on the dry side but still scrumptious and a 5star.

As a person from Chengdu, I must say this place is mostly satisified my taste. However, jelly noodles have a big problem: it's not freshly made. The noodles taste like spinned off from the Jelly block and then aged for at least a few hours : they stick to each other and hardened. Besides, northern Sichuan jelly noodles do not have millet chili, another score down. As a Chengdu native, I can only say that the jelly has been unscrewed for too long and has become sticky and old. Moreover, Sichuanbei jelly is not as spicy as millet, which is hard to accept. Other dishes taste okay

This place is a gem. The food is real authentic Chinese food not the traditional shopping strip mall type or city block food. It is located next to an Asian supermarket which may explain the fresh veggies and meats. I had just about everything here and only been going for 2 years and the food is super delicious. I had tried many locations in the Hartford area and this is hands down the best my opinion.

The food was delicious! It’s a very cozy yet elegant place. Service was perfect. Prices were good especially considering the portions were huge! Everything we got was yummy: the Szechuan style rice bean jelly noodles, Dan Dan Mei, DaoBan Yu, MaPo Tofu, and seafood lo main. We asked for some dishes to be made vegetarian by omitting the meat and they were very accommodating. #1 recommendation would be the DaoBan Yu sea-bass, it was truly incredible. Will definitely be coming back!

Overall I enjoyed the food. The service was attentive and food came out in a timely manner. The staff were warm and friendly. I will say some select dishes are overpriced for what is received - particularly the spicy dry pot. It should include shrimps,fish filet,squid ,beef, sausage,pork intestines, and mix vegetables in spicy sauce. The meal was 95% vegetable. There was a fair amount of beef, fish, and intestine. It had 2 thin slices of sausage (hotdog), 1 shrimp, 1 piece of squid. Me and the person sharing didnt get to try all the items because there was only 1 of a few of the included items. It was very disappointing. This was a $25 dollar dish of mostly veg bc the meat was scarce. For that, it loses one star. However- everything else was great. I have no complaints about the peking duck, dumplings, cuttlefish, or noodles. The cuttlefish was perfectly fried and we enjoyed it so much that we ended up ordering another serving. The noodles were flavorful, light and fresh tasting. Id say overall, this place is worth a visit if youd like to widen your horizons on some authentic chinese food.

Shu is always a hit, especially if you are into spicy Szechuan food. It’s not cheap, but it is very good. The Mapu Tofu and Dan Dan noodles are both a perfect blend of spice and savoriness. You will definitely need a reservation if you plan to come here on a weekend night for dinner as the restaurant is not very large. Would also recommend placing an order for takeout, going to shop at A Dong and then picking up after you’re done.

Went to the restaurant for lunch. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant. It’s classy, the ambiance and service were great. We had a meal from the lunch menu and one from the vegetarian section. The dishes had great taste and we were very pleased. We plan on returning to try some of the other dishes.

Plenty of vegetarian options. I tried their vegetarian kung pao chicken and fried rice with eggplant. Both weee delicious. The kung pao had a strong flavor of pepper and sichuan style. Scallion pancake was crispy. Will be back to try more menu items

I absolutely love the food here. Besides the delicious food, the service is great. I accidentally made a take out order to the West Hartford location when I typically order from the Fairfield location. I realized this 20 minutes after placing my order. This was for Shu Express in Avon CT. I found no entry for it here so as they are related. I was quite disappointed in dinner which was pricey as well as underwhelming. The scallion pancakes lacked visible scallion and the only taste that was evident was that of old frying oil . Crispy chicken was bland and had an off taste. Perhaps the bad oil again. Mongolian Beef was ok; not great but at least better than the chicken. When the white rice is the best prepared item in your order (for $44 for two), you feel like this was a mistake not to be repeated. Chose elsewhere

We only just got our appetizers and I'm going out of my way to say how good the food is. This is high NYC level quality food, but in (near?) West Hartford, CT. I would have taken pictures if I knew the food was /this/ good. I like spicy food and the spicy options are exactly what I want.
