Tried calling several times over the last few months and have never had anyone answer the phone. Had been trying to find out their hours and days of operation as I had gotten different information online. We are new to the area, so we are trying to find places we like and start to get to know the area better. Mom and pop places are usually some of the best, so I have been disappointed that I couldn't get the correct information so we could plan a time to go.

Excellent service. Food was delicious. Speed's is my go to for local seafood dining. Their FRIED SHRIMP dinners are my favorite. Most definitely recommend.

The triggerfish here is awesome....I didn't even know people ate triggerfish.

It's the best seafood restaurant in S.E. Georgia! My wife and I went with a friend for dinner, Sept. 3rd of 23. I had the shrimp and develcrab dinner, my wife had the develcrab casarole, and our friend had the fried oysters. The food was excellent. The service was, by far, the best I've ever had in the area. My wife and I are not fans of oysters (we hate them). We tried a few of our friends, they were very good, we liked them & would recommend them to anyone. The crab and shrimp were simply heaven on a plate.

Got take out. Crab au gratin cooked/ served in a paper tray so you couldn't eat it without chunks of paper stuck in it and the portion was approx 2/3 cup and a few fries for $19? The menu says meals served w/ fries, cole slaw, hush puppies. Came with fries only. My fish sandwich appeared to be served on a hotdog bun for $13. We had high hopes based on reviews.

Great food. Fried or broiled. HUGE servings don't over order on pre-entree items. BYOB suggested. Limited floor staff be patient. Decent prices. I don't recommend the crab stew or dinner salad. AC is not the best.

I'm going middle of the road with 3 stars. We ate Friday night getting ready for the parade. We knew it would be a good bit of a wait, apparently this is normal. There were not that many ppl there when we were there, 2 groups of approx 8, 6 tables with 1-2 ppl. A friend said they only had 1 fry cook but they actually had 2. Every one at our table ordered child shrimp of dif types except one fish sandwich and an oyster child size. After almost an hour we get our food. Plates had cold/ luke warm food on them, oyster plate was good and hot. My husband's plate didn't even come out. Waiter did not notice this. I had to stop him and tell him that we were missing a child's fried shrimp. He says "Oh, I'll get that." After about 5 minutes I'm thinking he's forgotten again so I go ask him about it. His response "Oh, I'm getting it." So now I'm not so happy because obviously this plate was forgotten and never cooked. I asked him if it was forgotten several times, in which his response each time is "no". Each time he said no I tell him it obviously was forgotten and by the time my husband gets his plate we will have eaten ours and what are they going to do about it? Finally he admits that it was forgotten and by then that plate is ready so he runs off, grabs it, rushes to our table. My husband's plate was the second hot plate at the table, lol. Later I was told by an employee that our food had been sitting, the waiter wasn't coming to get it when signaled and that he did indeed forget that child shrimp plate. Now I usually do not complain, however I should not have been lied to when I knew infact that the plate was indeed forgotten after sitting there right at an hour for food in a restaurant that barely had anyone in it during our wait, we all ordered things that were fried with the exception of a grilled shrimp and shrimp sure does not take long to cook. If the issue was indeed with the waiter, someone please help him. He is young and most of these young folks need extra guidance these days (they get distracted easily), but I also know that the kitchen staff heard/saw me talking to the waiter and someone should have taken over the situation with a better response.

Crab cakes had no taste. The fried whole trout was OK. After complaining, they took on the crab cake charge, very nice of them.

Update 1/2023: the sweet tea is awesome and our waiter was great! My blackened shrimp was cold when I got it and the crab stew was bland, not blended well with very little crab meat. The fried shrimp were awesome! First visit: Everything was excellent! Food was great! Staff was friendly and attentive! Prices were reasonable!

Very nice staff. Fried shrimp, scallops, trout and flounder were all done well. Hushpuppies passed muster, which from a southerner is pretty high praise. Watch your step! A fair amount of different levels, steps, etc. Hold onto your mamas or go slow!

Ray and I just had a great meal at Speeds. Portions were large and my oysters were fried perfectly …..soft, just the way I asked. The shrimp were great and the hush puppies are the best around. They even had Butter, not margarine spread! Kallie was our waitress. She was sweet and very attentive. We’ll go back, now that they are like the Speeds of old😊

Reliably good for the past 50 years for me. Decor hasn’t changed in 50 years either. The outside is bluff simple. Inside are the nicest restaurant staff anywhere. Their fry oil gets changed regularly, always fresh. Try the oyster cocktail

This place is definitely a hole in the wall but my god, it was absolutely amazing. The staff is super kind and friendly and service is very quick. You definitely get your money's worth with this place. Food is delicious. They were unfortunately out of oysters, but they gave us the option of more shrimp or scallops for the dish we ordered. We got the seafood plate which came with a little bit of everything. The breading on all the fish was night and light and flavorful. You also got a cup of crab soup, which basically reminded me of clam chowder. I don't believe any of their food would be bad. Don't let the exterior of this place keep you from stopping because you'll definitely regret that decision.

This place is ok one like real Southern Cooking then ok Very Bland . It's a nice place but overrated.

Haven't visited yet but definitely plan to. Supposedly a wonderful laid back seafood restaurant tucked in the back roads of Townsend Georgia. Food looks fabulous, family owned for some years and the prices are amazing. Google them and you can see for yourselves.

I have frequented Speeds for the past 13 years,new management,new junkies frying the food and revolving waitstaff make things interesting.Never again.

Heard lots of recommendations, we are always up to try local, so thought we would give it a go. Staff was pleasant,but It took an hour and 40 minutes to get 2 fried dinners, one with a baked potatoe! No explanation, no large parties....fries were soggy and cold, scallops were over cooked and rubbery. Fried oysters were good. Sorry, won't be back.

I have to give a good review because I love this place and will go back. Went there plenty as a young girl, so we made a special trip over to get crab stew to-go. It was so bland, didn’t taste rich like it used to - maybe they leave out the evaporated milk now - anyway, something about it has changed from the original recipe. Anyway, the oyster stew was divine and I’m sure the crab au gratin and fried fish are as good as ever, so I will be back.

After a horrible experience at Hunter's, this place was a breath of fresh air. Sweet waitress, great food, family atmosphere...Loved it!!

We are a group of three couples from NC and NJ that annually visit Darien to kayak and pig out on wonderful seafood. Speeds is our favorite. Service may be a little slow at times, but the quality of the fried seafood more than makes up for it! You need to bring your own beer or wine. It is definitely a hidden gem but well worth the trip.

The menu is a bit confusing in that there are clock symbols for selections that will take a long time to prepare -- so we steered clear of those -- but the orders we placed took just as long to arrive at our table. Decent selection of fresh seafood, burgers and steaks. There was only one harried server on a Saturday evening, so... The oyster stew was a bit bland, but full of fresh oysters. My triggerfish was seasoned perfect and the broiled scallops were plentiful. Surprisingly, the French fries and hushpuppies were delicious!

This is a locally owned and operated restaurant, at Shellman Bluff! Great Seafood, Steaks, Everything on the menu is excellent, Fast friendly service, and a pleasant atmosphere! After a day of fishing you can come in, byob, and Casually Relax!

We heard about Speeds through friends and decided to check it out on our way home from Florida to Savannah. I am so glad we did. The food is delicious. Fresh shrimp, oysters, flounder, and more. This is a family run place with no frills and that is exactly what gives it it's character. Our entrees were huge! We left stuffed and happy. We will be back.

What an interesting place to eat! It's decades old, part of it is an old trailer. It's shaded by ancient trees in the middle of nowhere down dirt roads - talk about atmosphere! Our waitress, Theresa, was simply terrific. 3 days ago was the first we've ever been there, and she treated us like friends. We even arrived too early for service, but she allowed us to come in (cold & wet outside) and sit down with a beverage. She as a great personality, and has been serving there for many years. It is owed by the same people since sometime in the 70's. Food had wonderful flavor, and was cooked to order, This is truly a "plain" place, and many would not rate it as "excellent" because it has zero flash, but we both prefer good food and competent employees to flash. Come dressed as you are, too! Just do not equate the description with "cheap" - it most certainly is not cheap! But it's worth the cost

You aren't going to just stumble upon this place ... You will have to be looking for it. It is tucked away in a off the beaten path location but well worth the estimated 6 mile drive. It is family owned and operated. The food is good and the service is very friendly. I had the fried grouper basket with fries. Both had good flavor and the portion was just right.

I can not say enough about how awesome the food is at Speed’s!!! The fried shrimp and the whole fried flounder is some of the best I’ve ever had!! Their unlimited coleslaw is too cool!!

Speed's is an institution on Shellman's Bluff, and people come from near and far to enjoy their fresh, well prepared sea food. The place is just two trailers welded together and it doesn't look like much, but don't let that fool you. Also, it is important to remember that this is NOT a fast food restaurant; sometimes there is a wait involved, but it is well worth it. There is no bar, but you are welcome to BYOB. I used to live in the area, and Speed's is one of the best around for delicious, fresh and abundant seafood.....enjoy!

My family and I have probably been going to Speed’s Kitchen for 20 or more years. As a matter of fact, we usually eat here three or more times during each visit to the area. It doesn’t look like much - some buildings cobbled together - but the seafood is fresh and delicious. I have no idea why people complain about the wait. Warnings about the wait are posted everywhere. You can easily expect to be there for a couple of hours, but they do let you bring your own cooler. Let me give you the best tip ever - call your order in and get it to go! You pretty much walk straight into the kitchen where there’s a very small team of older ladies cooking and packing up the best seafood around. This is the first year Speed’s has started accepting credit cards. I’ve written personal checks there for a long, long time. Anyway - get take-out! You will be so glad you did. The crab stew is delicious, the flounder, the shrimp, the scallops...and for some reason the very best baked potato you will ever eat. Enjoy!

I don't even know where to start....there's tiny clocks symbols on the menu which means there's a 35 minute wait for that entree and literally half the entrees have this little symbol on them. The menus have scratched out items and prices with new prices written over them. The crab Stew was tasteless, it was a basic Roux with crabs and potatoes with absolutely no other flavoring not even salt and pepper. The baked potato had no flavor except for the sour cream and margarine that they served with it. The appetizer dishes were left on the table while the main entree was served. There are no Fountain drinks all soft drinks served from a can and then a gathering of cans was also left on the table. If you did not want to wait for 35 minutes for your entree you had order fried seafood, which was tasty if it did not come out cold which one of the entree did, hence the two stars. With all the excellent places to get Seafood in this area, Speeds kitchen is not worth going out of the way for.

If you are in area and like to get fresh seafood, seek no more! Give them a call and pick it up your shrimps and/or oysters the way you like it. Sure, it is as fresh as possible. Atlantic Ocean just behind the corner! Of course, you can eat in, too. Just be aware: it is very, very simple but friendly.

Speed’s looks like someone pieces together a few cargo containers, which might not be far from the truth. The family run restaurant allowed us to come by a half-hour before closing and the food was wonderful and inexpensive. The portions are large and the service excellent
