Okay Japanese food if you're a true Japanese food connoisseur then you may want to skip this place if you like Japanese food and are not too picky it's a good place. Good food good service nice atmosphere okay parking. Price point is in line with what this type of place is. It is not an upscale or authentic Japanese food place. Yet the food is good and the atmosphere is good the staff is friendly so try it and see if you like it

A hidden gem, with great sushi and ramen.

Food was mediocre and service was not great. Gal with glasses at front was rude and unhelpful. They couldn't provide suggestions of popular options. I knew moments into this visit that I wouldn't be returning. The food was not that tasty, however, it had great presentation.

This is our go to sushi restaurant. The staff is always kind. The sashimi have always been on point and the specialty rolls are a delicious. Large menu for all and quality fresh fish!

Great for a casual/romantic outdoor meal or casual dinner inside. Had the baseball game on inside last time but offers outdoor seating as well. Does a nice Valentines dinner for 2 with a photo backdrop for pics. Good sushi.

Regrettably this is not the best Sushi Restaurant in Portland.

They've had my business for 25 years. The food is top-notch, and the service is amazing. Even with being short staffed, everyone was positive and upbeat. It's always great to see. ETA: Portions have shrunk, which is disappointing, to say the least. Maybe it was an off day but service was also lacking, I had to ask for our tea twice as well as soy sauce.

It is a great experience, on both food and service, to be in this place. It gave me the vibe of stepping into a local joint in the countryside of a small town of Japan.

We have been going to Takahashi since the early 90s. We always sat at the bar said a friendly hello to Seiji (so?). It was always packed, spotlessly clean, bursting with charm, like walking into another world. We walked in tonight, a sunday about 6 o’clock, and gone was all the charming Japanese decor, the manga novels were packed up in boxes. They sat us at the bar facing a plastic screen, covered with saran wrap and grease. The menu was completely different and we didn’t recognize much that we usually ordered. And it was barely half full at prime time on a Sunday night. We could smell the lovely marijuana scent from the business door. It looked like the restaurant was going out of business. We were so sad, we left without ordering. The food was always fabulous, so we will try take out another time.

Been here multiple times. Always so fresh and so good! Also big portions and the lowest prices. Even though it doesn't look like anything special from the outside the sushi are amazing. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend giving Takahashi a try—it's sure to become a favorite spot for you too!

This place smells clean and like good tempura when you walk in. The service is quick and efficient and attentive. The prices are reasonable. The food quality is high! Presentation is 10/10. They have gluten free soy sauce. They also serve hot sake. My new favorite spot!

This place is fantastic. Hands down my favorite Japanese restaurant in Portland. I had the seared teriyaki salmon - you get so much food for $20. It comes with miso soup, noodles, rice, cucumber salad, and 6 pc California roll. I’m not a big California roll fan usually but there’s was excellent.

Food is bomb. Fresh and delicious 👏🏼. Prices are reasonable for the quality and the service was the best. Went above and beyond for us and the waitress was so kind. Recommend 100%

I always forget how much better Takahashi is than the super fast "train" places are (which always fill the void, the quality just isn't as high.) Staff here is very quick, responsive and friendly. We visited on a Wednesday night when they offer 25% off the sushi menu (frontside). Makes it a pretty good deal! My husband and I ate our fill, and we both had lunch leftovers. The fish here is SO nice; top quality, appropriately sized cuts for nigiri and very fresh. The tempura items are cooked perfectly. My favorite nigiri is the seared salmon. Check their hours before heading out. We always forget they are closed on Monday/Tuesday.

I really love to find spots of the beaten path and this is one of those great finds. Really fresh fish in the sushi, a huge variety of tempura foods, great for family’s , a spot that is hard to beat. Even though the fish is super fresh, the prices are very reasonable.

Sushi was great as always, but they should have waited to do the tempura about 5 minutes before our 7:00 pickup time. Tempura and the egg rolls were cold and soggy. That's $25 of tempura we couldn't eat.

Wait wait, I actually got a few photos before I completed devoured my food. Definitely a great sushi spot. Located next to a Plaid Pantry on 104th/Holgate. Wednesday night they have 20%/25% off some of the sushi and roll options. Had order of Maguro that was soooo good. Nice big pieces, easily sharable portion. Have been here a few times when I get my sushi craving and it doesn't disappoint. Go check them out. They open at 5pm, and fill up pretty quick...Domo Arigato!!!

The tempura was so good it was made by the Asian kid that wear glasses he make it the best make sure to get food from him he know what he’s doing 🍤

This was a pleasant surprise. One of the better restaurants I’ve been to in Portland. I’ll definitely go back with my family and maybe have my birthday party here.

UPDATE 5/2023: Happy to report that the food is still amazing! We live further away now but the drive is absolutely worth it. ORIGINAL: Always amazing sushi in an eclectic environment not often seen outside of mainland Japan. Highly recommended. Ask for the jalapeño roll, not always on the menu but it is fantastic.

Always have loved this place. Gordon Ramsey would probably rip them a new one about dust on the chatskis but excellent food.

I've been going here for about 20yrs! I go here for family gatherings, celebrations, or to just fill a craving. Really, any excuse I can think of, is a great reason to come here. Pick anything on the menu, you can't go wrong.

Top sushi places in the area with a great atmosphere and good quality sushi.

Food was amazing and well priced. The ambiance is someone's love letter to Japan. The server was alright but the host was abysmal. She literally ignored me standing at the counter for several minutes trying to pay my bill while using her phone and texting. A coworker had to come up and tap her on the shoulder to help me. I've worked as a host in restaurants before so I have a high standard, but this was honestly embarrassing for the kitchen crew to have someone like that in the front of the house.

Tempura is 10/10, Mackerel is 10/10, Eel is 10/10, Ginger Soda is 10/10. I will be going back for sure again! The sushi rice needs some improvement; but great overall.

I have been a fan of Seiji's for nearly 20 years. Takahashi is IMHO The best Japanese restaurant outside Japan, and I have been to Japan. Definitely my favorite old school restaurant in Portland...

The food was great. I had sushi and gyoza. Others had teriyaki and katsu. The service was quick and friendly.

Friends had raved about it, we went together and at 5:40 it was already a 45 minute wait . . . TOTALLY worth it! Loved the atmosphere, food and service. Can't wait to return.

Excellent yellowtail sashimi. Its a bit of a dive by location and appearance but Im ok with that. On Wednesdays you'll get 25% taken off your bill. Parking lot gets full, best option is park on the west side.

Very reasonably priced, the fish on the nigiri were sliced much bigger than most other sushi joints too! Solid miso soup, and their Hamachi Kama is some of the best I have ever had that comes with a tasty ponzu sauce.

Takes me back to my childhood days. Grew up eating this style of Japanese food and our house had the same vibes as this place. I love it! The staff was friendly and hard working. Thank you for the nostalgia! Update- I took my daughter to eat on Nov. 20, 20022, she ordered the vegetarian curry and it was horrible, it was the consistency of cream of wheat and the only vegetable that was in the curry was peas! The plate of curry cost $19.99 that is a rip off for something that didn’t have no flavor in it! Also I hope they will clean up the restaurant because everything on the walls are very dusty and sticky.

Great place for friends during the lunch hour

This is currently my fave sushi place in PDX. The quality is out of this world for the cost. They know how to properly roll and cut as well. If I have one suggestion, shrimp rolls is in maybe 80% of the special rolls. Got no issue with shrimp, but I'd love to see some more variety there. Haven't tried anything but sushi there, so can't comment on that. The real wasabi was super good and fun to try.

We thoroughly enjoyed the incredibly creative sushi here. We had cocktails at Post Office Place next-door while we waited for a table which took 35 minutes to acquire on a busy evening right after they opened. Had a great waiter by the name of Hoggan who took great care of us and provided good input about menu choices. The sake is excellent and the sushi was the best we’ve experienced to date.

Absolutely wonderful! My wife and I both have celiac and have to be gluten free. The staff is very good about modifying any roll to be gluten free. No gluten free tempura but they'll sub it out on some rolls. The food is amazing and they are great!

Very good sushi. So fresh and clean. The food was good. The wait staff was soooo kind. I was really pleased by the young lady that took my order she was very sweet. And was too kind. Very helpful and willing to help in anyway. Wish I got her name but I forgot. I did order the ramen. I am from LA and Ramen is VERY popular and so very good it’s highly sought after. The miso soup is a pork based long cooked version of the soup. I was not too pleased with the broth it was very plain and boring. I honestly couldn’t even finish it. I left to pork belly in the broth over night and oh my gosh!! It WAS SO MUCH BETTER!! I actually enjoyed it after I left the pork overnight. I have it 4⭐️’s cuz of the service. That really saved this review from being lower. 2👍🏽’s outta 3👍🏽’s for service and awesome sushi but lacking in full follow thru on all dishes.

Great selection and good sushi, nothing was excellent other than the caterpillar roll and snitake tempura but it was all a great value. I went to try the tempura here more than anything. The Sweet potato tempura was actually regular potato and the tempura and sauce together were a little bland otherwise I'd max out this review. The mushrooms were delicious and fresh! The best atmosphere here is not at the sushi bar unfortunately, but it's great throughout the roomy space.

Delicious tea, gyoza was nice and crunchy with good flavor, and it was my first time trying cold soba noodles! They were amazing and the staff was really nice even though we came in the hour before they close, thanks for putting up with that lol 😅

Hands down the best sushi in SE Portland! I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to write a review - we’ve been coming here for years and it’s always been excellent. The food is fantastic, the service is friendly and quick. This place is a gem and we’re so happy they survived the pandemic!

I had the Sushi Dinner & it was amazing. It's sort of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in a out-of-the-way neighborhood in Portland but still the food is good & waitstaff are friendly & professional. Also it's like a little Japanese Museum with all kinds of Japanese artifacts everywhere(everything except Godzilla). I highly recommend Takashi if you're ever hungry for sushi or tempura in southeast Portland.

We've been to Takahashi's many, many, many times over the past 22 years. This was the worst experience for two reasons. We were told 20 minutes wait which turned into more like a 45 minute wait. No big deal right ? Just hungrier and the food tastes better ? Okay I'll give you that . Also, the sashimi was delectable , and the miso was good. But the tempura was heavy and tasted like it was cooked in over used or slightly burned oil. Gave me heartburn later. Sorry this may be our last visit there.

There are quite a few sushi options around here and we try different ones occasionally, but always come back to Takahashi. I love some choleste-roll!

Loved the food and service at Takahashi. The place reminds you of Japan and the service staff is excellent. Sushi Rolls are fresh and delicious and the Tempura options are all scrumptious. Highly recommend this place since it's a hidden gem in Portland.

It’s kind of a gem tucked away, but definitely worth a visit! We really liked the decor and the sushi was very tasty. Also our server was really nice.

Not sure if it was an off night due to the heat or staffing issues. Was optimistic to try this place out based on the reviews and photos. Went in last night for dinner and quickly noticed there were some flags. The waitress seemed overwhelmed and figured it was a dinner rush issue so I politely asked for what was needed: water, napkins, and plates when the tempura veggies arrived. Veggies were adequate and warm (1 star). The shrimp tempura was a different temperature and the texture was milly. After ordering nigiri, sashimi and some rolls to access if more was needed, another server arrived to inform me that one of my orders could not be made because it was pre-mixed. I asked if it could be made with other ingredients due to a food allergy and she said no and I asked to have that roll cancelled. This was a sign that not all ingredients are fresh and the kitchen was unable to make a fresh alternative. Sashimi order was supposed to be the mix of tuna, yellowtail and unagi but arrived at the table as all yellowtail at a warmer temperature than anticipated. Rolls arrived and the sushi chef attempted to make the roll that I asked to be cancelled by adding a side of siracha. The sushi rice lacked in flavor and texture, seemed under seasoned and the texture was granular as if it was day old. The Yellowtail sashimi was not the same grade as the Yellowtail nigiri. The plain tuna and fresh salmon nigiri was good quality cuts of fish (1star). The waitress returned at the end of the meal and when we expressed our concern for the wrong sashimi order, her response was it was the kitchens fault not hers. In lieu of making an issue, me and my friend got up and paid. In summary, the atmosphere is family friendly, as in there will be a screaming baby in the large back room as there was last night. The wait staff could benefit from checking in with the table sooner and accommodating customer requests. It's an okay place with okay food, if you like okay beer with less than okay service.

Decor is awesome. Staff is friendly. The food and portions are great. But if you want a sushi dinner, go elsewhere. It was a small menu, mostly fried.

I went to Yakahashi with my relatives that like this restaurant thr most and I can confirm that the sushi was great and deliciose. And the waitress was probably the best I've ever met. Great place for japanese food. Thank you for a great gastronomic experience.

Estimate ready for pick up was half an hour, when we are there to pick up they ask us to wait for another half an hour, then extended for another 15 minutes. Will never come back.

We got the curry chicken, veggie yakisoba, eggrolls, and gyoza. Everything was fresh and tasty. I felt the curry needed more spice and curry powder but otherwise was good.

A cute restaurant, established in 1985. It could use a spring cleaning - the interior was a little dusty, but very charming. We tried the tempura scallops and they were divine. The creamy scallop nigiri was also excellent. Unfortunately their miso ramen was a little underwhelming, and the noodles in both the miso and tonkatsu ramen bowls were overcooked. I'd eat here again - but stick to the sushi menu!

Typically a great restaurant with good food and good service. However don’t try calling in a takeout order because whoever is answering the phone will lie if it’s later in the evening, and say they are “out of sushi rice.” After minutes of silence and then pretending they are someone else. When earlier they said you could place an order. Whoever is up front needs lessons on customer service. If you don’t want to take an order then just say it’s too late, don’t make up a whole scene and lie.

This is one of the best restaurants in the portland area. The rolls are delicious, the tempura is delicious and cheap, and the whole experience is warm and welcoming. Cheap, reliable, easy.

I've been looking for a regular Saturday night sushi go-to spot in SE Portland ever since Ichidai closed. I can't believe I've missed this gem until now. They have really good attention to detail ( no sloppy, falling apart rolls), the fish is fresh, and the place just has an overall great vibe. Looking forward many more meals here.

Yeah took my Mom there she’s Japanese with dementia. We waited 35min for nothing we ordered. No miso soup no seaweed salad no nigiri but we got tempura we ordered well somewhat. Don’t get me wrong got my shrimp , onion kinda Japanese squash if you call it eggplant. I canceled the miso soup after 30 minutes and canceled my nigiri that oops they didn’t get my order. When I paid 20$ for food I didn’t order and told the staff nope nothing was said except what did you order.Paid for bland food I didn’t order just because I didn’t want to upset my Mom. Place is dirty. I’m taking away my other star. Y’all don’t know GOOD JAPANESE FOOD! Bye
