Food was flavorful. Service was excellent. Reason for not a 5-star rating: 1)although everyone else enjoyed the taste of the food, I found it too salty; 2)we were confined to a table enclosed by the hostess podium at a corner; and 3)the tonnarelli was not al dente although the sauce was rich and tasty.

This restaurant offers well-executed Italian flavors, but the portion sizes are shockingly small. On my first visit, dining with two, we ordered three pasta dishes and two appetizers, yet the servings felt more suited for kids than adults. With pasta prices ranging from $24 to $36, one would expect a more satisfying meal. Despite the commendable flavors, the tiny portions left us hesitant to order more, knowing we’d likely receive the same unsatisfactory size. While they deliver on taste, it disappoints in offering a truly fulfilling dining experience.

Great Italian restaurant in Pasadena! Being from the Philly area...was pretty impressed with the Italian cuisine. The Torchetti was out of this world and the meatball appetizer reminded me of the Italian sausage based meatballs from places in South Philly. Soooo good!! Definitely give this place a try!

Seated 30 minutes after our reservation. First dish was the bread which ended up cutting my mouth. Second dish was burrata which was just ok but the bread it came with was sublime. The best thing I ate there. Third dish was mussels which was really good. They didn't have several things from the website on the menu tonight unfortunately. Last dish was fettuccine with lamb belly. I like my food salty, but someone messed up. It was almost inedible. I'll say I'm not much of a fan of Italian food so it met my (low) expectation. It could have eating been better though.

Ordered the squid ink lobster pasta but it came undercooked (not al dente). A large portion of the pasta's core was distinctly and unmistakably hard, and far from the 'firm to the bite' standards of al dente. We sent it back to the kitchen citing it was undercooked, but it came back the second round completely the same. Shocking considering that an Italian restaurant cannot properly cook pasta. The server did not ask if the pasta was ok the second time around at all. Since it was already late and we were hungry, we decided to cut our losses and leave

Wonderful sharing experience. We shared three bowls of pasta, the Torchetti, Squid Ink Lumache, and the Carbonara. The squid ink pasta was the least favorite. It does have lobster in it but the entire dish tasted fishy and I felt the noodles were too large to enjoy. The other two options were amazing. I definitely recommend both the carbonara and torchetti!

The definition of elevated fine dining food quality! Everything in the menu is worth its price. Grilled octopus, AMAZING! Lobster ceviche, AMAZING! Arugula salad, AMAZING! Squid ink pasta, AMAZING! Lamb chops, AMAZING! Their TRUFFLE FETTUCCINI, the best in the industry! Finger licking food. Most “gourmet” restaurants grate truffle and on the pasta and forget to cook the pasta with truffle oil, so after you’re done with the truffle you’re left with a flavorless pasta… UNION gives you an actual truffle pasta. Cooked in truffle oil and with actual truffle! You MUST have the pasta, worth every penny! Their wine selection is exquisite, may have had a couple bottles. All delicious.

Tight inside, but a lively atmosphere with a beautiful wine bar. A crostone appetizer of Tuscan bread, green garlic & cheese topped with prosciutto helped set the stage - so fresh! The bucatini was a bit firm for us, but the pistachio & burrata sauce was intriguing. The standout of the evening was the torchetti pasta with pork ragu. Rich, savory sauce atop perfect al dente pasta. We finished out with the delectable olive oil cake served with a dollop of amazing in-house vanilla ice cream. Would highly recommend a visit.

Is a heavy and mildly upset stomach after meal considered part of the dining experience? You are in for outstanding pastas that are rich in flavors, salty, creamy, and the right amount of al dente. But they are heavy on the stomach. If you get the red sauce, it overpowers others, in our case, the Bucatini was served after the Torchetti and the pistachio lemon zesty flavor was completely subdued by the rich oily spicy pork ragu. Salads are refreshing. Olive cake did not pop, but a cup or tea or coffee afterwards will give the meal a satisfying finish.

SQUID INK LUMACHE has lobster meat to upscale the richness flavor then combines with lemon to bring a hint of freshness. Amazing. Only downside is that if the lobster meat could be a bit more. TORCHETTI soaked in perfect sauce, fried rosemary adds some crispy texture plus the aroma, perfect. Mussel sauce is perfectly made tomato sauce, but there are a few dead mussels( closed shell).

The food is good. It is overpriced but it is good. The main issue is the staff. Specifically the hostess. First time I tried going I did not have reservations, and I was alone, so I put my name down and I was never called. No notification at all which leads me to believe they never cared to put my name down at all. I thought fine, that's understandable as I didn't have reservations and was alone maybe they just didn't care. Second time I was able to get reservations and they sat us outside on a small rickety table facing the sun. They had many tables underneath a makeshift rooftop but according to the hostess that was shared with another restaurant and saved for bigger parties. Then it started to rain and they moved us to a table underneath the rooftop, so apparently it was for the restaurant after all. Very unfair and possibly discriminatory that the hostess didn't let us sit at a table that was available in the first place. This is the 2nd time I've had trouble with this restaurant and although the food is good, I t's not worth it to be made to feel lesser than. I've gone to many good restaurants around the city and not treated like this. Hippo in highland park, for instance has food just as good but nicer staff.

Great restaurant but couple things: 1) the food, pastas in particular, are very heavy flavored, we went in large group and all of us had digestive upset that night. 2) the server pushed us to order way too much. She had us order 12 dishes (not including bread) for our party of 6 adults and asserted it would be a light meal. We ordered at least three dishes too many. And we are not light eaters. We were not happy with her guidance.

Union left us thoroughly disappointed. The unwarranted pressure from the waitress to order more left a bad taste from the start. Our choices were dismissed as inadequate, an unnecessary intrusion on our dining experience. The bread, priced at $15 for a mere four small slices, was a stark example of overpricing. Such a cost for such a paltry portion felt unjustifiable. The main courses further compounded our dissatisfaction. The spaghetti was not only overly spicy but also lacked any appetizing appeal. The pistachio pasta suffered from an overpowering lemon flavor, drowning out any nuance. The eggplant pasta was a major letdown – dry, hard, and lacking seasoning, with the eggplant being both overcooked and underwhelming. To add insult to injury, the exorbitant charge of $6 for a cup of black tea was nothing short of a highway robbery in the realm of dining expenses. The service, characterized by slowness and an overall lack of warmth, failed to redeem the experience. Our server neglected to check on us, leaving us feeling neglected throughout the meal. Moreover, the seating arrangement was baffling. Despite numerous available tables, we were inexplicably seated right by the freezing entrance. This lack of consideration for customer comfort only intensified our disappointment. In summary, Union's combination of pushy service, overpriced and underwhelming food, along with indifferent service, made for an utterly unsatisfactory dining experience. Even at a lower price point, the mediocre quality would be questionable, but the high prices at Union make it downright unacceptable. This was a regrettable dining experience that we won't be repeating.

Union is a restaurant for the experience of culinary expertise and respect for the ingredients. The menu is balanced with rich savory goodness. Designed around plates that can be shared, flavors are well-concentrated and are morsels of treasures. Sauces are rich and balanced. Pasta is freshly made with care. For starters, the meatballs are as good as everyone is talking about. The attention to detail is on display clearly. A octopus order was absolutely surprising. The flavors were well accompanied and the piece of octopus was cooked to perfection. The Squid Ink Pasta was silky goodness laced with a rich essence of lobster concentrated flavor. Another pasta ordered with a rich duck ragu was equally surprisingly delectable. Finishing our meal with the pork chop ended our meal with a savory fill to hungry bellies well satisfied. I have to put some emphasis that Union knows how to concentrate its flavors and season ingredients heavily and smartly. The dishes are not big and are not designed for single dining. Bring some friends, and share the wealth of goodness.

The appetizers were actually really good. The grilled octopus was done very well. The pasta itself was maybe not to our taste. The "Carbonara" was soooo salty and peppery, I think someone accidentally over seasoned it. Probably should have asked if we could send it back. One of the best Italian restaurants in Pasadena. It’s very well-known and has a long history to it so I have known about Union for many years, and finally tried it for my first time this weekend. It’s right in the middle of downtown Pasadena and they have a lot of seating options both inside and out. Our server was very polite and did a great job. Parking in the area can be a bit tricky due to its location so we chose the parking garage directly across from the restaurant for $10. The food was very good and everything came out fairly quickly. The only issue we had was that I had a piece of lobster shell in my pasta so when I bit into the pasta, the hidden shell cut my gum. We started off with the Bread, Butter & Giardinieria and it was very good. The bread was fresh and crispy and was a great start. Next we ordered the Tamal Beet Salad and the Heirloom Tomato & Stone Fruit starters. Both were fantastic, very light, and perfect for summer. I especially loved the labneh with the Beet Salad. Finally for the entrees we chose the Squid Ink Lumache and the Cacio y Pepe. I love squid ink anything and that dish was really good although I wish there was more lobster and again there was a sharp piece of lobster shell in my pasta that cut my gum, so that was not a pleasant experience. They Cacio y Pepe very good and really hit the spot. Overall a really delicious dinner and aside from the shell in my pasta incident everything went well and I would definitely return next time I am up in Pasadena.

I don't understand the 4 star, 5 star rating for this restaurant. We went for our son's birthday dinner here last night and the food was a disaster. The pork meatball appetizer came out first and it was not too bad but the bottom was all burnt. The second appetizer, charred octopus also came out burnt. That ain't no charred, it was burnt. The pasta was good! The squid ink one was especially great. The cacio pepe was bland as if it needed more cheese...it was acceptable. The main dishes were very disappointing. The pork chop was very oily and had no taste of butter or garlic that everyone's talking about. I had to complain to our server and she actually took it back, gave us a credit back. That was very nice of her but as we all know they offer very little portions, we ended up ordering another squid ink pasta to fill our hungry stomach. The second entree, a fish of the day, came out all salty. It was about 4"x4" cod fried entree and it was the saltiest fish I had in my life. We barely ate a half and decided to wait for the squid ink pasta which my birthday boy was eager to get his hand on. The final extra pasta made us explode. This was like eating a spoonful of salt. It's a completely different pasta that we had 30 minutes ago. We all couldn't chew and spit out. That was it, We made another complaint and walked out. The only thing excellent was the way they managed my complaint. The manager and the server were very friendly and kind enough to give us credit back. They were A+ for not getting this issue escalated when a group of people are waiting to dine inside. The kitchen, the chef gets the big fat F, providing salt bombs after the complaint whether deliberately or not. We still have the salty taste in our mouth today after 24hrs. I found it interesting that the most of all the negative ratings are from minorities...we were the only minority table...coincidence?

Extremely unfriendly and non accomidating. I made this reservation days ago celebrating a birthday for a party of 4. We all walked in on-time. We were offered a table right in front of the door in a freezing cold. I asked for an open table on the side. Super unfriendly host told us that table was for 6 people and later sat a party of 4 there. Another table opened up and I was told that one is taken as well. So we just walked out and went to a friendly restaurant a block away. Food is good and that was the reason why we dined there several time in the past, but food is not good enough to deal with arrogant and unfriendly staff. Will never go back again and don't recommend it. There are many great restaurants in Pasadena with friendly and accommodating staff who appriciate customers. The presentation was very poorly executed with the flavor of the truffle very bland and lacking. It was shaved truffle according to the waitress and not worth it in taste or price. The presented dish looked like something you'd get at a chain restaurant of just pasta and mushroom white sauce with very little truffle and cheese. For $50, I was expecting more visually and flavorful. Marina Restaurant, though new, did a better job executing their truffle pasta dish, the visual, taste and smell was very pungent and flavorful. Union should just remove this dish off the menu.

The meatballs were enormous on my husband's and mom's dish. They call it "family style", I would say that they serve things as they are ready, which is a different type of service than I'm used to. My husband and I visited Pasadena (and California in general) this past weekend and a friend recommended Union to us. So happy we listened to them! It's set up that you, ideally, get 3-4 items to share with your date, but the portions were still plentiful. Our waitress - Casey - was a delight to talk to and her recommendation of the Moscato by La Perlina was *chef's kiss*. The pasta was the best pasta my husband and I have ever tasted. I can't recall the name, but the smoked duck ragu was unbelievable. We plan to visit the area and make a stop here again!

The food here is some of the best I've ever had. When I first walked in the building, I notice the place was small and packed (it was a rainy Tuesday night). The servers were all over the place and didn't seem to have the orders/tables organized. It did not make a good first impression. However, all that changed when I tasted the food and wine. Each dish was better than the last. I could taste each ingredient used; something only a highly skilled chef can accomplish. My favorite dish was the squid ink pasta. I will be ordering take out next time. Highly recommend. 5 star food 5 star wine 3 star service 3 star atmosphere

Such a fantastic experience every time. We were able to get a walk in (though don't count on it). Everything you hope for.

The pastas were to die for. We got the Torchetti and the Squid Ink lobster pastas and they were heaven on earth. The pork meatball appetizer was great but not amazing, but since we weren't crazy about the lamb especially its cost we would probably order the meatballs again to eat with the pasta. We were full on 2 pastas + 1 meatball appetizer and we were pretty hungry. We did have the hidden peach tart dessert that wasn't on the menu using our second stomachs but it was tasty but just average. Basically apple pie texture, but wish the peaches were soft instead of crunchy. Overall fantastic place and those pasta dishes were out of this world. The ambiance is a little crowded and a tad noisier than I would've liked. The waitress was sometimes hard to get a hold of (wish they scanned the area before turning around) but if it's the flavor you value more than the vibe then highly recommend.

Came here with some friends for night out dinner. The food is great, with great Italian options. The atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing, and gave that classy dinner vibe, with perfect lighting. The waiters were really nice. The outside balcony is also perfect for those who love an outdoor vibe. Lastly, the pricing is not bad. Might try it again.

The fact that they have no bread service lost a star. They wanted to charge $4 for bread. Our check was about $221 for 2 people (that's with tax and tip) but no bread service. So no bueno. Taste wise, Everything was good. The peach dessert had an interesting salty flavor rather than sweet but that was okay by me. The corn tortellini, the duck, the beet salad, and the Stracciatella were all delicious but would I come back for any of it, probably not. There wasn't a cravable taste to the food. However I might be back to try other items on the menu. I would give service 5-stars. It was wonderful. Attentive but not intrusive.

Can't tell what the food is like but we were told there's an hour wait but yet there's 9 open tables im not saying it's because we are Hispanic but a white couple shows up no reservations just like us and they are seated immediately pretty hard to swallow

5 stars suggests perfect. Wasn't quite perfect but certainly wasn't 4 stars. 4.99999 The food was perfect. It's a small kitchen and they make everything in house and you can tell. So fresh so flavourful. Chase was our server and she never missed a beat. Very entertaining and very knowledge on product. We had the meatballs, the bread, a pasta dish, the duck and the mushroom dish, and 3 desserts!!!! I DO NOT eat mushrooms and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thankyou for your hospitality. Will see you again soon
