Sad to say it's not what it once was. Food was served cold and soggy, drinks were late, service was slow despite a half full room. Quality is not the same as it was years ago, too bad. Hope they can get back on track.

One of the best Mexican restaurants in New England. When the quality of ingredients is superb, each dish is an experience. After living for many years in Miami, I can say that I have tried amazing dishes with pork. And Vida Cantina pork belly tacos hit the perfect spot of juiciness and tenderness. The pork on the tacos could be enjoyed on its own. For dessert, I had the tres cakes, and the combination of flavors took me back to my childhood tres leches. To me, that is a great dessert, one that can transmit comfort. I must make a disclosure to anybody who is a lover or tres and four leches dessert, this is definitely its own different dish, served with ice cream, but one worth trying. The contrast of textures of the cake and ice cream melts in the mouth, followed by the perfect balance of sweetness.

How do they get away with this place? It’s so awful but the bobos on the seacoast go there like it’s “great”. It’s downright wretched and also a complete and total ripoff. How they get away with this illusion is stunning. Objectively this place is inferior to every other spot on the seacoast. But hey, you have branding and a pedigree people will fool themselves into saying they like it. I’ve eaten here so many times as a polite guest, but for the love of god stop putting me through this. Embarrassingly bad food. Need to do a lot lot better. Edit: The issue is you’re resting on your laurels. You had a good product and it’s been getting worse and worse. Has nothing to do with “what I’m looking for”, it’s objectively inferior. Do better while you still have folks kidding themselves because of reputation.

This is not your typical strip mall Mexican restaurant with strip mall prices. There is a time for those meals and there is a time to enjoy elevated Mexican cuisine. We came on a Friday night. It was crowded, but fortunately, there weren't any kids running around screaming or big bowl frozen margaritas for two. We did enjoy a show, but more on that later. This is all about the food, the quality of the ingredients, the way it's prepared and the taste. This is not cheap Mexican food but it is so tasty and different. I had carnitas and carne asada tacos while my husband had fried avocado and the mushroom chorizo tacos. We had chips and salsa, each had rice and beans. We each had a margarita and my husband had a Modelo with dinner. Next time, we're going to still order our own meals, explore the menu, but we'll skip the house made chips and order an appetizer to split - or order their fresh guacamole. (BTW, this is not the watered down version that comes already mashed in a cryo-vac bag. This is legit.) As for the show, two older couples came in. First couple, woman orders Birria. If you've never had it before, ask. The server was knowledgable and patient. (It's a lamb stew with chilies and a broth served with tortillas. You can't find it everywhere because it takes time to make.) She didn't like it, complained quietly, sent it back and the server and manager came out and apologized. They even brought her some plain tacos. OK fine, nice to see how Vida Cantina handled it. Second couple was so typical. They give 60+ year olds a bad name. They sit down. Server comes to get their drink order. "We love this place! Love the food," the woman says. "We know what we want....Yada, yada, yada and pork belly tacos." Food comes, woman freaks out. "I thought it said pork tenderloin. We're very conscious of eating the right fats in our diet, you know what I mean?" Man is adding his own side bar, "Yeah, wasn't expecting so much fat. Can't eat that." Server and manager come over apologize, take it off their bill and table and order tostadas. Here's the thing, if you're such a foodie and you love the restaurant's food you should know what pork belly is (BTW, delicious). But, if you rush, don't suddenly make a scene, although they were entertaining. Good food is hard to find. Restaurants that support the local farms are hard to find. Vida Cantina is worth it. Their food is creative and tasty.

Since the moment I stuck a pin into Portsmouth, NH on the map, I knew I wanted to try Vida Cantina at least once as I settled into my new place. Lucky for me its literally across the street from my new abode. So after April's surprise snow storm, I did just that. My family and I were seated promptly and ordered food and drinks. The first to come out was my Agua Fresca, Horchata. Let me tell you, I had to quickly ask the waiter to cancel my kids drinks since I knew they wouldn't like it from the first sip. It was unsweetened and needs to be strained better. From there I ordered 3 tacos. I started with the Picadillo. It was basically hamburger meat with some homemade pickled jalapeños that again lack flavor. The meat could be seasoned more and Picadillo traditionally has potatoes and carrots. Second was the seared fish taco. That one was better! However the Guacamole on it looked like it's been sitting out all day. Last was my personal favorite wherever I go, the Carnitas. The meat was cooked to perfection! However when I asked the waiter for a side of salsa, because it's not a Taco without salsa, he brought out fresh diced tomato. Not even a hint of lime, cilantro or jalapeño to make it a zesty Pico de Gallo at least. I was very disappointed and my husband and I kept saying, "All it needs is some lime and salsa and it would make it better." My kids had the Pollo Enchiladas Verdes... the word enchilada literally means to be spicy. They took the opposite of that word and made the green sauce SWEET. Look, I get it, you're trying to work with the demographic but I think I shed tears when I took a taste test from my kids plate. Lastly I tasted the rice and beans. Which by the way you get charged extra for. The rice was your typical restaurant style rice and the black beans where OK. For being a Mexican restaurant I expected Pinto beans. Would I go back? Probably not. My final thought on Vida Cantina is that it's serving watered down Mexican food to a majority of people who don't know what authentic Mexican food is but I do give them credit for being inventive. But inventive doesn't mean you have to take out what makes it Mexican in the first place. I know the restaurant claims 'Modern Mexican' but I would call it a Fusion restaurant instead.

Food, drinks, & service so consistently amazing, that I'd consider moving out this way just to have this be our "usual" Mexican restaurant, could we afford the move. It's. That. Good. !!! We've been here maybe half a dozen times in as many years. Every time we're just blown away. The margaritas are refreshing & so flavorful (try the habanero margarita with cilantro - you're welcome 😉). We tried the salsa flight this last time, no idea why we've never done that before but they were all SO FLAVORFUL, & we love their thick, salty chips. 🤤 This last time I got a tofu taco, a masa fried shrimp taco, & a pescado taco (fried). The flavor combinations were incredible...!!! So unique, perfectly balanced, unlike anything I've ever had before, in the best possible way. [$6 each for such incredible tacos is 💯 worth it, IMHO. Totally competitive pricing. Regularly pay $5 per taco elsewhere & they're nowhere near as good, so $6 per taco here is perfectly reasonable.] Service has always been super friendly & fast. They're always up to giving recommendations & we're never disappointed! Really my only complaint is how tight the tables are. I know it's an old Friendly's but we really feel quite squished in the booths, even with our small children with us. Would be quite uncomfortable with two adult couples in one booth. This is nit-picky though, obviously it would be a huge undertaking & a massive expense to shut down & renovate, & really, the food is so gosh-darn good that I really don't care, it's not like it's gonna keep us from going back. Their chef was nominated for a James Beard award - I believe it! 🤤 Cannot recommend highly enough! 🤤

I was here several years ago, and the food was extremely good but this time out of the three meals one was extremely overcooked and dry. Even the sauce on top had dried out. It should not have left the kitchen, and the manager himself brought the dried out dish to the table. The other two meals were just OK, not like it use to be. Long wait times on food was probably due to understaffing. They were nice enough to take the dried out meal off of the bill.

One of the most disappointing restaurants I've been to in quite a while. Menu was limited. Food portions were poor. What Mexican restaurant charges for chips and salsa???? No frozen margaritas. There is a Walmart next door just go buy one. I heard 3 other customers ask for a frozen drink while we were there. The house margarita was $12.00. It was small and all ice. (see picture) The entree does not come with rice or beans - extra charge. So, all I got with my meal was tacos. $22.00 for tacos with no rice or beans. Place was expensive and off putting. This started off as a one star review, but was salvaged a bit by the manager, who was very nice and definitely understood the evening had gone south. My family of 5 (three teenagers) had 6:30 reservations and were seated promptly. It was a Thursday in February, and restaurant was busy. We were greeted after about 15 minutes, ordered apps: bottomless chips and salsa, guacamole, and soup. Chips were delicious but most definitely not bottomless. Soup came after an hour with no spoon. I sent it back, and waiter rolled his eyes at me and said he was "super busy." Drinks were small, mine was missing the fresh chiles, and we weren't asked if we wanted another until after our food came. The avocado and pescado tacos were delicious but served alone (never asked about accompaniments). Beef tacos were not seasoned and very underwhelming. My taco obsessed teen would not eat them. Carne Asada enchilada sauce was burnt. Verde enchiladas were meh. We would have spent a lot more money here (sides, drinks, dessert), so a missed opportunity. I worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years, so I understand being in the weeds, but you cannot treat parties this way or risk them never returning. The whole meal would have been different if someone was checking in and acknowledging the situation. At the end, the manager just happened to stop by to ask if we needed water, and we asked him to help retrieve our check. He chatted with us, maybe sensing something was off. He did exactly what was called for, acknowledged where they had gone wrong, and took some items off the bill. Very appreciated. This restaurant has a rom of potential, a lively environment, and cute decor, but final verdict is reconsider this place if you're hungry or having dinner with a family. It's a great concept and I hope they turn it around!

I'm probably among the dissenting opinions here, but this place was just okay. Let me be clear, I'm a little bit of a traditionalist when it comes to Hispanic cuisine. My opinion is exactly that, and biased, but I was bummed when chips and salsa didn't come with our meal. I was enraged on behalf of abuelas everywhere when I saw that it would cost $8 for an order of chips and salsa. My wife and I arrived around 7:30 on a Thursday night. The place was roughly half full, but we were told we would have to wait in 15 minutes to be seated. I've worked in restaurants - the staff didn't seem like they couldn't handle a '2-top'. I had the black mole enchiladas, and my wife got a trio of tacos. My rice and beans were lukewarm. The rice had clearly been in a hot pan for a while because there were quite a few crunchy bites. The food was good, but I didn't feel it was anything special, or so special that it was worth the price tag. We each had a margarita, which wasn't any better or worse than other margaritas that I've had. I'm happy to see chefs putting a unique twist on traditional Hispanic foods - taking historically 'cheap' foods and creating gourmet meals. However, I stand firm that the best Hispanic foods I've had, have been served from a truck, by a person who speaks broken English at best.

For our main course, we selected 4 different tacos to choose from. All so delicious. Despite an extensive drink list, we chose a couple of draft beers. Great service! Our server was attentive and friendly.

Vida cantina has some really great food there tacos are ala cart so you pick which ones you want to complement your meal. Chips and salsa are not free but they are done just right. The atmosphere is great once you step in. Service was a little slow for a Saturday afternoon but overall it was a stellar experience.

We had a fine lunch here on a holiday weekend. Nice staff, lots of choices on the menu. Everything seems homemade, even the chips. It's rare to find tasty Mexican food in New England. (Very. Rare.) But this place is fantastic and I can't wait to go back. I'd say the menu comes across less fancy than the photographs on TripAdvisor. It's not as fussy. But that's fine!

Get the cornbread, just do it! Unique take on Mexican cuisine that definitely hits the mark! Creative cocktails further enhance a dynamic, albeit small menu. Everything I've tried here has been exceptional!

The food was poorly seasoned and over priced. They try to portray a high quality taco standard, but utterly fail in execution. Beans never had any seasoning and rice was crunchy, dry, and again underseasoned.

We stopped in for a quick drink and chips and guac. The house and watermelon margaritas were tasty. The Pina-ti was great...had an interesting taste and it was light and refreshing. The Chupacabra was definitely worth the price of admission! A definite spicy kick, and the cilantro really added to the swirl of tasty ingredients. The corn chips were freshly made and were superior as far as corn tortilla chips are concerned. The real standout for us was the guacamole. Freshly made - and the garlic presence is outstanding! Easily a top guacamole in many years of guacamole exposure! The staff was warm and friendly. The decor was absolutely appropriate for the fare. We met the owner and he was friendly and easy going. My only complaint is that we didn't have time to sample the rest of the menu - looking forward to trying the Mole next time we are in town.

My family and I visited this place after a morning/afternoon at the beach. Was recommended to come here by a Jon whom works in the kitchen because he is a mutual client of ours. He spoke so passionately about this place as an employee and we promised to visit next time we were in the area. So happy we did! Atmosphere is great and every single person we dealt with working there was amazing. Food was incredible and I found myself ordering another one of the tacos we originally ordered because it was so good. Salsa Fresca and chips are amazing and a nice change compared to most Mexican type restaurants. Whole family is looking forward to going again. Thanks John for the recommendation! -JIm-

This is our go-to Mexican restaurant and parent's night out. The smoke show cocktail is probably our favorite, and all of the tacos are delicious and unique. A must try!

Old Friendly’s location turned into a Mexican spot. Good food and fun atmosphere. Staff felt a little overwhelmed, but it was a busy summer night so understandable. Good gluten free options and understanding by the staff. Chips and salsa and enchiladas were great, tacos were good.

Listen. I had Vida Cantina cater my wedding this past weekend and no one could stop talking about how amazing the food was for days afterwards! Pro tip, I ordered restaurant style tacos, because those were superior to the catering style. The restaurant style had chopped and shredded meat, vs catering style was only shredded. Just a preference and I felt the flavor was even better for restaurant style when I sampled both, even though it cost a little more. We loved having all the extra toppings, like pickled onions, different salsas, etc. The queso and guac were amazing! The boom chips were so good. I’m not sure why the corn chips are brown, as I like a more traditional yellow corn chip. But all in all, 5/5 stars, sooo happy we went with this restaurant to cater our event. We will definitely be coming here for date nights in the future! Thank you Kaitlyn!! For going above and beyond for us.

Chips were overcooked, salsas had no seasoning or acidity, tacos were cold. My first enchilada wasn't what I ordered nor what was on the menu. Second one was super salty and fridge cold beans. Maybe an off night but wasn't worth the money spent.
