I don't eat a lot of Japanese food, but do rather enjoy it, and this place blew me away. I ordered a veggie udon with a side of veggie gyoza, and my girlfriend had a veggie tempura over rice, and a miso soup. It was honestly some of the best tasting food I can remember eating. We slowly cleaned our plates and bowls, stuffed to the brim, after swapping for a few bites. It was absolutely delicious. Our hostess was so kind, and she and the cooks thanked us from the kitchen as we were leaving. 10/10 customer service. We will go back, and you should check them out!

Entering Yama is like going into a some sort of portal. Are you really in Morgantown? Is it 1998 or 2024? If you are lucky enough to arrive there for lunch, be patient - the place is popular for a reason. Just sit down and enjoy some green tea or a Mountain Dew and await the glorious nourishment that will arrive at some point. This place is not a quick lunch, but why rush when the food is this good and the service is so kind. Slow down and enjoy!

Fantastic food, with a great atmosphere, one of the best places in Morgantown.

Normally I would lessen the stars for atmosphere because it is small and crowded but here it really works for the feel. The food was excellent and authentic. The workers were so kind and pleasant. This is a must visit. The only negative are the unusual hours.

My favorite restaurant in the world. Authentic Japanese diner food in the most unlikely of places. I've frequented Yama since ~2015 after I returned from a study abroad trip to Japan, and the quality has never declined. The service is great, the atmosphere is great, and the food is delicious. I urge you to have a meal at Yama; you won't regret it.

Got the shoyu ramen - broth was rich and flavorful and the pork melted in my mouth. I don’t tend to like pork in ramen much but this was just absolutely incredible. 10/10

I've been wanting to visit Yama for months now, and finally got the opportunity to go for dinner on Wednesday. Though their hours are limited, it was well worth the visit. Casual and cozy interior, we ordered our meal at the counter - spicy tuna rolls, miso ramen, the pork cutlet and fried salmon bento boxes. The boxes came with a delicious array of side salads and miso soup, arranged with a lot of care. You can tell the owners take a lot of pride in their food. All the food was perfectly cooked..highlight for me was the fried salmon, which was super crispy but moist and juicy inside. Absolutely delicious meal and I highly recommend visiting!!

Definitely one of the highlights of Morgantown! The ramen is stellar and the atmosphere looks of a traditional room in Japan; prices aren't too steep either. Service is a tad slow however but it's completely worth it.

Good Japanese home cooking. Small, often busy place. Friendly owners, staff, and patrons! I make a point to eat here at least every week! Check their Facebook page for hours--they change.

If you're in the area and they are open, you have to stop by! One of my favorite places downtown, would highly recommend. Great selection and fantastic quality.

What a fantastic little place! Was lucky enough to come through town when they were open. Had a fantastic dinner for a *very* reasonable price. I got vegetable udon (photo), my husband got yaki soba, and we shared an order of veg gyōza. YUM.

What a find! This casual (order & pay at the counter and then seat yourself) gem should be added to your dining list. We ordered spicy tuna rolls, gyoza, shrimp udon and an eel bowl. Everything was fresh and tasty. Yum! I’m sorry we will only be in town overnight because other menu items caught my eye. The staff was friendly and helpful.

What a great little restaurant! The food is incredibly well done with meticulous attention to detail and flavor combinations at a very affordable price. Everyone is extremely welcoming and values their guests. Will definitely need to return to sample new things on the menu! Only wish they were open more often!

No way this is more than two stars. Sushi had way too much rice and so did my bowl. I was really disappointed do restaurants get cheap when collages in break. I’ve eaten a lot of Japanese restaurants and on this day it lacked flavor and protein.

Every positive review or kind word spoken about this restaurant pales in comparison to the reality. Like, I wish there was a 6th star. I've never wanted to rate a restaurant higher than Yama. Take that however you want, but I can tell you that I get to travel throughout WV and nationally for work so I've been to a restaurant or two. Also, my credentials: I'm a discerning fat guy. We went here when on the road for work. When we were walking out, my supervisor said, "Those people were so nice. Like, I feel like we should send them a Christmas card or something." It wasn't Christmas. I left the restaurant feeling so good. I felt good on every aspect--down to my soul. Yama hits ALL the notes in just the right way.

I have consistently been impressed by the quality of the food and service. The noodles are always cooked to perfection and the broth is full of depth and flavor. Yama has truly brought a piece of Japan to our college town. The staff are also incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit feel like a warm embrace. If you're a fan of authentic Japanese cuisine, this is the place to go. I give it a resounding five stars

One of the few authentic Japanese places in the country really. Mr Yama had this restaurant for over 20 years and I sold it to someone who would carry on his traditions better than most. Enjoy your retirement and look forward to the next 20. It was all delicious!!

This should be Best Of Morgantown rated. First class service! The little entryway off the side of high street holds a treasure trove of amazing authentic Japanese treats with the atmosphere to match. The service is helpful in helping you navigate their simplified menu aiding in finding exactly what you're looking for in a dining experience. Great quick lunch stop, or nice little spot for a dinner with friends. Ten stars in my book!

Best hidden little treasure in Morgantown. I stopped by while in town for a hobby meetup, was blown away to find authentic Japanese cuisine! I really enjoyed the Takoyaki and the cold Shoyu ramen! Will definitely have to try the curry rice next time I am able to make it out there!

They serve the best katsudon (breaded deep-fried pork and eggs cooked in a sweet and salty broth served over steamed rice) I've tried outside of Asia. Their katsudon is extremely authentic. I believe their chief is Japanese, and if you want to try authentic kasudon, I would definitely recommend this place. I've never heard of anyone complaining about their dishes while I was working at WVU.

I love the way the food is made! Yama is my dream job. I would recommend the food to all poeple. I go every once and a while and every time I'm in heaven because for the great food there! I love Yama so much and I think there should be an add for Yama

This place doesn't just feed your body, Yama feeds the soul. The staff are all amazing, and the food is delicious...comfort food that I don't feel guiltily about eating. It's the type of place I love to go when I'm worn down from work. I always leave feeling better.

Definitely the best Japanese place in Morgantown. Yama-San may not be around for the day-to-day anymore, but the food still holds up. I know a lot of folks don’t like the bathrooms here, and in the surface they look pretty dingy, but they’re typically clean.

I have been going to eat here for many years, and I have never been let down once. Everything on the menu is great, and the people who work here are real gems. If you miss real Asian food, you will find real home comfort food here. You truly cannot go wrong if you decide to eat here.

I know nothing of Japanese cuisine so I’m not going to try and compare this to any other place I’ve ever been. All I know is I’ve been eating here about once a month or more for... I’m guessing 15 years or maybe longer. I love it!! It’s not very big but it has a lot of repeat customers. I see a lot of the same faces. That tells you something about the place. I can’t say I’ve ever had a bad experience at Yamas. It’s not the place I’d take mom and dad when they are in town because they wouldn’t get it. But it’s the first place me and my friends speak of when we decide to go out to eat.

On one of the cold nights we had in January D and I stopped in Yama Japanese Restaurant as a treat for getting thru all the paper work we had to do. As we walk thru the door we are greeted by Mr. Yama, not his real name, and welcomed into the warm restaurant. I’ve been coming here for 20 years but D’s been coming since Yama opened. I settled on Chicken Teriyaki and D got a California Roll and Udon. But of course we start with Miso soup. This is the stuff I get when my gut is acting up as it did during chemo. So now I get it every time it’s so comforting. My Chicken Teriyaki is wonderful. Rich dark chicken pieces and rice marinated in Mr. Y’s teriyaki sauce. D’s Udon was filling along with a huge, as in many pieces, California Roll. I “ had” to help eat some of his roll. Mr. Yama sends out a red bean dessert treat as a surprise. I think with 2 teas it was less than $25. And we were definitely Not hungry the rest of the night.

Loved this place. I got a lot of food with my aunt because I didn’t know that the portions were so big. I was very pleasantly surprised. Very yummy and the staff is amazing. Definitely coming back.

Best Japanese food in Morgantown! The place is great, I go there whenever I can! It's exactly like a ramen shop you would find in Japan, and make no mistake, this is NOT a sushi restaurant they have sushi on the menu however this is a ramen shop.

This is a hidden little secret in Morgantown that sadly most locals don't know exists. Awesome food and the friendliest service in town for sure. This Japanese restaurant is very small and tucked away downtown. Probably only 8 to 10 tables. Excellent food. And the owner "yama" always says thank you to every customer as you depart. ( he yells it from the kitchen) ..a real gem if you like Japanese food. Highly recommend!

This place has the freshest and best tasting Japanese food I've found. Their prices are very reasonable and one of the fun things is you can watch Japanese TV while you eat. They have been specific hours so I'd check if you aren't going exactly at dinner or lunch times.

I have been driving past this place for years and finally gave it a shot and I’m so glad I did. If you want to try authentic Japanese cuisine, this is the place to do it. I tried the spicy tuna sushi roll, the shrimp dumplings, and the udon noodles. It was all delicious. If you like spice, add the red pepper on the table to your noodles. I can’t wait to come back and try other things!

This "hidden" gem is worth finding! They serve authentic Japanese cuisine in a cozy, tidy and welcoming environment. The prices are more than reasonable and the employees go out of their way to make sure you are satisfied with your experience. Many items on their menu are vegetarian/vegan or have the option to make them so. Either take out or eat in I can guarantee you will not be disappointed!
