05/06/2023: My granddaughter and I had lunch to celebrate her first year of college. Home Kitchen Cafe was her choice. We immediately were seated at a cozy corner table. 11/06/2023: My teenage son and I reserved an 8:00 saturday dinner reservation via Resy. Looking at Resy now it does state that this restaurant "may" charge $50 per person for reservations cancelled within 12 hours (I had not noticed this at the time of booking but it is there). We walked in and were seated by the staff but decided not to eat there due to two factors - the music was too loud for easy conversation and my son, being a teenager, wanted something different (as teenagers often do lol). We informed that staff that we were leaving and we left. Of note, the restaurant was about 1/3 full; there were plenty of empty seats. We were not informed by the staff, "by the way, you are going to be charged $100 if you cancel at this point". That would have been a nice thing to remind us of; per the Evo representative I spoke with it must happen a lot as he believes no shows are the reason the place isn't full on a Saturday night. I received email notification via Resy today that my card has been charged $100 by Evo kitchen for the cancellation. While I recognize that this is within their right to do based on their policy, I requested that the charge be waived, or that they meet me half way and reduce it to $50. I made my case that while I am sympathetic to their need to run a business, I feel some leniency is warranted due to the restaurant being less than half full, the fact that we did actually show up and cancel (rather than just no-showing completely) and the staff not mentioning "hey, you're going to be charged $100 if you cancel right now". We would have stayed and eaten had we realized this charge would happen. Also, this is the steepest no show fee I have ever seen. The representative I spoke with stated that "people like you" who make reservations and then cancel them are the reason the restaurant was less than half full on a Saturday night, and went on to state that they need to have this policy "to stay open after Covid". Both of these things seem fairly disingenuous. I am not in the restaurant business, and I'm not an unreasonable person. While $100 may not seem like much to Evo Kitchen management, it is a lot of money for most people and feels like an excessive penalty for anyone for a cancelled reservation, and certainly one when the restaurant wasn't nearly at capacity and the Resy notification only says it "may" be charged. A reduction to $50 seems quite reasonable to me, by Evo does not agree - they are determined to get that full $100! We love Portland and its food scene but this is tourist trap behavior. Buyer beware.

06/06/2023: Brilliant restaurant experience! Deep, layered flavors, perfect cooking, wonderful service. We had the vegetarian tasting menu, every bit of it eye opening, great cooking, gorgeous plates, and BTW, what a restaurant bargain! All who live or visit Portland must go here!

11/05/2023: Our food was amazing. The hostess was super cordial and helpful. We were a party of three with no reservation, we waited at a bar table then we’re settled at the bar for dinner. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating Our meals were delicious. A must would be the cornbread side.

We didn't have reservations, but the rumors are true...you just get there a little before 5, and they will put your name on a list to get the next available table, or you can sit at the bar and eat right away. I had the green salad and grilled asparagus with duck egg hollandaise sauce. I'm vegetarian, so it was nice to have those options. The food was perfectly prepared and delicious. But the star of the show was the Mango Cake. Wow! That pastry chef is a genius with mad skills! She made an unbelievable combination of textures and flavors that I have never experienced. I know their menu changes, but if you see that mango cake in the dessert menu, snap it up. You won't be sorry. The cocktails were also very unusual and tasty. I had the Thyme is Nigh gin cocktail and it was wonderful. It was a delightful way to spend the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

17/04/2023: The gelato is incredible, however the parking is not. Had to park in a private lot and pay $8 to get a gelato. I was only in the parking lot for 20 minutes. I know this isn't their fault, and the gelato really is amazing (as are their cannolis and cakes).

16/04/2023: Heard about this place from a youtuber. Definitely worth the hype. The Hot Gelato Panini was delicious. I also had a medium sized Gorgeous flavor. 100 chef kisses. Come here if you want Gelato!!

05/05/2023: This meal will forever be a very memorable meal to our trip to Portland. I ate the beef patang and it was EXCELLENT. My husband had the pad Thai and loved it and we shared the quail eggs. The flavors were so fresh and great fast service.

And yes, racist there is no other word to describe her actions towards only us, the ONLY minority group in the entire restaurant. One hostest/waitress in particular, criticizing her customers, making faces and being visibly upset when asked for something. Sad.

My husband devoured his tuna sandwich & salad, which he said was very fresh. Our server was, like every other server at every other restaurant we dined at in Portland, was cheerful, friendly, and professional. An absolutely lovely meal, worth searching out.
