The steak was great, rice and asparagus was good too! So food was wonderful! We had water and although our waitress checked on us, she never once refilled our drink and we had water. But she was polite and friendly 😁.

Loved the ambiance, old school steakhouse. Food was fantastic, Caesar salad, salmon, dry aged ribeye. However, the old fashioned pictured immediately upon receiving was less than desirable as it was 1/4 full and I was told the ice will melt it and make it bigger. Cutting costs in restaurants are understandable, but this was slightly overkill :/ Would definitely go back and eat though!

The pesto linguine is not pesto, it's spaghetti and the chicken was blan. For the pricing of everything, IT IS NOT WORTH IT! Completely disappointing. On top of all that, the waitress kept screwing up and had zero remorse for her multiple screw ups. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO ELSEWHERE!

The food was amazing, but the service was top shelf. Our waiter has only been at the restaurant for three months, but it's clear he has a servant heart and elevates the dining experience.

I travel quite a bit for work and I have dined at some very nice restaurants across the country. I was very pleased with this 40 Steak and Seafood. The food and service were great, and the atmosphere was unique.

First visit to Bismark ND. Supper with no reservation on a February Wednesday night. So glad we were able to get a table. Amazing first impression outdoors... Completely amazed at the decor and ambience when we entered and escorted to our table. We ordered Tenderloin steaks 🥩 Baked potato 🥔 this is a big spud! House salad 🥗 this is a big helping! Bottle of Red 🍷🍷 Great menu and uncomplicated dining options. 👍 The steaks were cooked to perfection, moist and flavorful 😋 Medium rare & Medium Staff were so welcoming and friendly. Excellent service. Thanks to everyone for a great evening out. A special thanks to the chef's 🧑‍🍳👩‍🍳👨‍🍳and kitchen crew who are seldom seen. We appreciate what you do! Well done.... Great food and service. Dirty martini was horrible but that didn't take away from the food or great service. If they have the blueberry cheesecake just do it!!

If I could give 0 stars or negative stars I would Worst experience I’ve ever had at restaurant especially with this high of caliber restaurant, where it all starts me and my girlfriend had a reservation at 7 o’clock. A few of the waitresses were just talking in a circle and told us someone will be there in a minute not willing to help. Took us about five minutes to get seated then did not see anybody for a minimum of 20 to 25 minutes, then the waitress that wasn’t even supposed to be helping us was just rude and arrogant. Took another 10 minutes just to get our drinks as well as bread the lettuce was dry and tasteless then told me after I finish my raspberry lemonade that there was no free refills in a rude attitude again. So I asked for water waited another 10 to 15 minutes just to get my water. The burgers were decent. I had ordered the mac & cheese and found plastic in. It told the waitress and she said it could be bone when clearly it was plastic and shiny instead of comping, the meal only took off the five dollar mac & cheese. Just a horrible overall experience will never come back and will recommend no one to come to that restaurant.

My wife and I went to 40 on a whim and absolutely loved the food and environment there. I had the lobster bisque and stuffed gnocchi. I would highly recommend both.

Ate here 3 yrs ago and it was amazing. Finally made it back, worst steak I've ever had. Half the steak was burnt, half was still cold inside. Dry and terrible flavor. They just said sorry, didn't offer new food or even a discount. For what they charge, it should be perfect every time. Texas Roadhouse for the win.

Phenomenal experience and food!

“Looked” like a great place! Atmosphere was great! The servers seemed to only care about how much of a rip they was going to get! Food was awful! Undercooked, cold, and the drinks was not even what we ordered!! For the price you would think they would actually care! Just feels like “money money money and serve whatever”! I brought the girlfriend to “impress her” and left feeling like a fool! Never again!

Decided to try it again after our first time of terrible service. This time was no better and our server was a snot. We waited an hour and 20 minutes for our food which half wasn’t warm. The steak and seafood skewer had little to no flavor. Then about 35 mins after getting our food she came over she made a comment of “oh you guys look like you are ready to go”.. we said “we’d like dessert if it doesnt take too long”. So says “well people have to understand it’s Saturday night at 7pm so you’re gonna wait” Meanwhile ALL the tables around us arrived after us by at least 15 mins and they received their food before us and some left before we got our food. And their servers were all very nice and attentive. Definitely would not recommend eating here.

Very disappointed in the so called 120 day dry aged steak.... if that was dry aged at all I would be surprised.... practically most of the steak was inedible between bone and fat. Too much money for what they offer... sadly spent $200 plus on very disappointing meal for 2.

Over an hr wait for our food that was bland and untasteful, sat for 45 + mins waiting for a server to fill our drinks. I'm sorry but I was not impressed and will not be back.

Only (absolutely minor)gripe is that the music didn't really match the vibe of the building on this visit. However, just like always, the food was absolutely phenomenal. Our steaks were perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. Hands down my favorite place to get a big cut of beef in town. The oysters with horseradish are also incredible. Freshest tasting oysters I've had anywhere in the upper Midwest!

The ribeye was a little tough but cooked properly. Not a fan of the bell pepper bed under the steak. Also a bit too much unasked for horse radish flavor on the steak.

My husband & I were traveling through the area, stopped for the night at La Quinta Inn & suites. We saw that 40 Steak and Seafood restaurant was close by, and thought it would be nice to have dinner there (our first time). Just about everything we wanted to order, they didn't have. Waitress was very apologetic, not her fault. I'm sure it's not always like this...but we were not impressed & very disappointed!

Horribly slow service..... high priced food.... very poor service.... I'd try Texas Roadhouse instead

Their famous steaks were a little pricey for us but we both had the walleye which was medium priced and awesome. Generous interesting and excellent salads and loaded potato. Sat outside and enjoyed outstanding service from a pleasant efficient waitress.

My husband, daughter, and I had the best experience for dinner! The service was beyond exceptional from the moment we walked through the door. The oyster appetizer was delicious and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed the kids noodles. My husbands tomahawk steak was prepared perfectly and the lobster entree was to die for. We 10/10 recommend dining here!

Only complaint is you should keep your Facebook and hours up to date. Otherwise phenomenal.

Food far outshone drinks and service. They didn’t have ingredients for a Negroni, and nobody in the building knew what a French 75 was. I had expected more for from what I assumed to be one if the nicest places in town.

Celebrating our Anniversary, this was the perfect choice! Great service and great food. The atmosphere was just right.

We rarely leave a review but with a place with this much hype and price... we were extremely disappointed. The atmosphere was unique and loved the bread and butter... but all their food was very under seasoned to the point that we had to pour a bunch of salt on to even eat it. The staff was very friendly but we will not be going back. Very sad for a place to have so much potential if only they knew how to season food.

Love the atmosphere of the bar area! Bartender is very friendly and has great recommendations for food and drink. Had appetizers and they were all very delicious as well as the cocktail!

The wet aged New York strip is best steak I have EVER had. Great atmosphere and service.

The food was absolutely delicious. My husband got the Cowboy Ribeye, which was dry aged for 115 days. It just melted in your mouth, super tender. I got the King Ribeye which was also phenomenal. Both steaks were cooked to perfection, medium rare. Scott was our server, and he did a great job. Fast, friendly and professional. Pictured is the King Ribeye dinner.

Pricey, but so worth it for a special occasion or occasionally something special! Fantastic food! Had a group of 4 and not a single complaint!

EDIT 11/13/19: This has been 40 Steak and Seafood for a couple years now, after being bought by the owner of Peacock Alley. Still my favorite bar in town for laid-back ambience. The menu and food is the best it's been in the last decade, possibly ever. Be prepared to spend some money, but know you'll be getting good food. This is still one of my favorite spots in Bismarck. EDIT 3/7/17: There are now more sushi options in Bismarck, including Kobe and Shogun, and I don't think the 40 still does sushi. Peacock Alley and the Toasted Frog are also worth mentioning for quality food these days. Under new ownership, the menu for the 40 has changed but the character and quality of the place remains, and they now serve particularly excellent whiskeys if you can afford them. Some of the flavors have morphed a bit, but all are still excellent. This spot still gets my highest recommendation. Original Review, 2009: As an on-again-off-again resident of Bismarck, I've had plenty of samplings of the food around town. As a frequent traveler, I have had many samplings of food all over the world. The East 40 is one of my favorite restaurants out there... in fact, it's the only restaurant in Bismarck that I miss when I am gone. The atmosphere is laid-back, so you feel like you can go there and relax, but it has quality that exceeds restaurants that have bigger names and more prestige. For the quality of the experience, it is modestly priced. As far as Bismarck goes, the only restaurant that could give it a competition in quality is the Pirogue Grille... But the East 40 bar gives it the upper hand in my opinion. The bar is one of the best in town in terms of selection and service, though you wouldn't go there to really party, it's too mellow for that. They have a variety of dishes that is surprising, even sushi; I've had much better sushi, I must say, but there aren't any better options in Bismarck if you are craving some. The standard and American cuisine is phenomenal - steak quality is fantastic, seasonings at times being nothing short of genius. I hold no reservation in giving this restaurant the full five stars.

The seafood bisque is incredible

My wife and I made a reservation here for our anniversary supper. On the online reservation system it asked if there was a special occasion. I mentioned it being our anniversary and we were greeted by the hostess wishing us a Happy Anniversary when we told her the name on the reservation. I was also able to note on the reservation that my wife needs gluten free as she has celiac disease. Our server came out prepared to answer all the questions she had about the items on the menu in regards to that. We enjoyed a dry aged ribeye and salmon for supper and a creme brulee for desert. Food and service was excellent. After eating we stopped into the bar for a couple drinks and enjoyed chatting with the bartender and later the chef as we enjoyed our drinks. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening!!

Overpriced terrible sevice and food wasn't any good

The filet was done perfect. The mussels were good, the loaded mashed potatoes were good and the Busch light was cold. Only negative was the onion bread. Not an onion fan.

I went to dinner last night with my family for the first time to try the dry-aged ribeye, but ending up really disappointed, like big time. I ordered the Cowboy dry-aged bone-in ribeye which they claim it as 116 days dry aging processing but I never tasted the flavors of it or the aged processed steak. I have had many dry-aged steaks in my life, and this was the worst steak I have ever had. The price is reasonable for $65 for 18oz. with 116 days aged meat, if it actually tasted dry-aged. Also, we ordered a dessert, the lava brownie, which is supposed to be served with ice cream but my daughter never got the ice cream. We also tried the bread pudding, which was ice cold in the middle and luke warm on the edges. Hope you guys fix the aging process and make it worth the money for those who would like to try it! On the plus side, the temperature of the steak was cooked perfectly.

We made reservations for Valentines day and were very disappointed. We ordered Crab Cakes as an appetizer while they were Extremely overpriced $24 for 2 cakes they were not bad, The Salads had almost no toppings, almost no cheese on them, one small cherry tomato. Our Entrées we got Seafood Skewers and A Sirloin Steak, The Seafood Skewers showed up Cold and the Shrimp and Lobster were not cooked completely, the Steak was ordered Medium Well and one Half of the Steak was Well done the other half was cold and uncooked. Overall the Service was not bad, Slow but not bad it took over and hour and a Half to get our food that in the end only half of it was edible. .

Had the reservation at 7:15 last night, got sat and placed our order for Bruschetta and drinks. My double whiskey and Coke came without the coke, (pepsi in this case since they don’t have coke). I had to ask for a glass with Pepsi to mix the shots of whiskey with. We placed our order for food at about 7:30, for our entrees. It took until 9:00 for the food to come out. The waitress ignored us for an hour until our waters needed to be refilled. The steaks were well cooked to our specifications but somehow after they were cooked, the chefs added so much pepper to the top, the flavor of the steak was off. The Mac and cheese I had ordered with my steak was so watered down, it tasted like cheese water. There was no flavor to it. The loaded garlic mashed potatoes we ordered had no garlic and was bland as well. Over all a highly disappointing visit to supposedly high end restaurant. Money ill spent for sure, I’ll never go back again.

had a reservation. still took 45 minutes to get our main food. it's "a la cart," meaning you order a $30+ steak and $25+ sides. our bill was $140 for two people and we didn't drink alcohol. i wouldn't mind paying this price if the steaks were cooked correctly.

We went out last Friday at 630. Had reservations. No parking available. Parked at hotel across the street. Got seated ok. Server very friendly, but very busy. Told us a few times "sorry, I got stuck in the back". Drinks took a bit and water took even longer. Unfortunately it was very loud and all my date could hear was the people in the booth behind us so couldn't talk to him. We'd been there at least 30 mins before we could even order. Appetizer was fine. Ordered dinner, and a 2nd drink. Drink finally showed up. Food took longer. Once I got my meal, it was not hot. I ordered the sirloin and it's clear it had been sitting awhile. Steak was cold, and not cooked as I ordered, medium rare. I was told to "cut into the middle and see if that's better". Not by much. My steak was more medium well and I'm paying (good money!) for the entire steak, not just the middle. I was asked if she could take it back. And what, make it a burger? Because it's already overcooked. My sides (au gratin potatoes and asparagus) also cold. Food is served in cast iron, which retains heat, so I'm very confused. Steaks heavily salted, as was asparagus. My date's steak also cold. He asked for steak sauce. He waited, and waited, and finally just started eating before food was ice. Steak was done by the time the steak sauce showed up. Very unimpressed from start to finish. Bill was $134.00 for 2 people and babysitter for 2.5 hours out (drive to dinner, dinner, straight home) was $25.00. Feel it was a waste of money and we'll never be back.

We had our wedding dinner here and I could not have been happier. The staff was absolutely amazing and took care of everything. The food was perfect and we could not have had a better experience!

Great food, extensive menu with great vegetarian options if needed. Eclectic decor-- the place has a lot of personality. Great staff, nice wine list, and well crafted cocktails. Highly recommend!

Overall, it's pretty good with decent service. Scallops were way too salty. Jalapeño bread was very nice. Wet vs dry appetizer was great. Try it out

Very delicious best steak in town

Had the lamb, corn, and mushrooms with a blantons an bread pudding for dessert. This place is phenomenal! Service was great, atmosphere was nice and they have a good whiskey selection. Dont pass it up when in Bismarck!!

This place is a gem 💎 let's be real. 99 percent of the restaurants here are really really bad so my expectations were not high. But I was wowed with every dish! The food is incredible the atmosphere is fabulous. The staff is just amazing. This is one of the best restaurants in the the Dakotas!!!! It's just a fact. Get there early on weekends. Thank you guys for making my finances birthday so delicious 😋. Edit we came back tonight(a couple weeks later) BEST LAMB AND MUSCLES EVER!!!! AND CHRISTINE IS AN EXEPTIONAL SERVER!!!

A wonderful date spot in North Dakota! Lettuce wraps, fish, and more! My husband got the tomahawk steak, an aged side of beef, and it's size did not disappoint! The mac n cheese was lovely and the decor and ambience was pleasant, warm and very inviting!

Loved the ambiance of the place. They have great selection of steaks and wines. I had a bourbon bowl because I was craving to have some vegetables and it was exactly what i had in mind. The Naan that came with the chicken curry was delicious. They gave me chicken in the bourbon bowl and to make up for it they gave me a complementary steak.

The food was excellent however there are no prices on the menu and the prices are exorbitantly high. I basically ordered two dinners and one appetizer and 4 drinks it cost $200 I was shocked!

4 staff not too sociable- I thought close to closeting or something. Lol. Here 2 more hrs /mid week. Bar has a strong damp/stale beer smell once in a while. Was there for almost 2 hrs had to ask for another drink and was never asked if we wanted something to eat or appetizers??!’ We had dinner else where but was up to an appetizer after sitting there a while

Great steak dinner! We also had a great Bourbon Bowl. Our server, Scott, was spot on showing up at the table bringing whatever we needed before we even knew we needed it.

We are from out of town (Minneapolis), stopping on our way through to Montana. Saw this place online, and MAN!!!!! What an amazing top of line restaurant! There was absolutely nothing that was not fantastic, beginning with the margaritas-hoooOOOOooly gods of tequila love! Made with a top shelf, generous pour of tequila, the mixer ingredients superbly complimented the earthy flavor of the tequila. I swear, it's the best margarita i have ever had! For the meal, I had Caprese salad- fresh mozzarella with grape tomatoes marinated in basil on top fresh greens and a perfect vinaigrette, followed by a petit bacon wrapped filet, that was heaven in every bite, I promise! Well seasoned, infused with flavor from the bacon wrap and melt in your mouth real red meat goodness! In addition, I ordered asparagus à la carte, which was fresh, cooked to perfection with not one single woody bite. Usually, I drive straight through from Minneapolis to Billings, but I'm pretty sure I will be planning a stop in Bismarck just for this incredible experience. If you've ever see "What About Bob" I was totally "Bob" ing out LOL with all my yummy sounds!

Great steaks. The oysters are a hit! Very fresh, as if I plucked them from a canal myself. Waitress was very attentive. Only call for reservations. It seems this establishment does not recognize reservations customers make on their website. It could cause hard feelings in the future with some customers. I am still giving it 5 stars but they should consider fixing that feature.

Bartenders need basic training. Ordered a gin martini - Aviation gin, stirred, bone dry, straight up. Pretty simple. I was served something cloudy, room temperature, and yellowish colored. Tasted awful. I asked what it was and was assured that it was a bone dry martini. It was undrinkable, so I ordered a gin & tonic instead. Twice the waitress came back to ask if I wanted it dry also. Huh?? Fortunately they got it right - but still charged me for the crappy drink that I sent back, as well as charging me extra for the olives. Unfortunately the management has no venue for private comment directly to them, so public it must be.

Terres Major was tender, delicious and cooked to perfection. Seasoned perfectly. Could not ask for better.

When you first walk through the door the first thing you notice is the vintage scenery. It was beautiful, like walking into another world. The menu had a wonderful selection of steak to seafood and wines and whiskeys. The prices were a little high but they make up for it with great tasting food.. the steaks were cooked to perfection.. overall it was a very wonderful and unique experience

Can be a great experience but it depends on the serving staff. Had a great experience in 2020, returned a year later only to be checked on twice, and it took two and a half hours to get our food, which was cold. Only offered 1 round of drinks the entire time as well. Found out why. Walked by to use restroom and multiple waitresses were flirting and partying with a larger group in the back.

It was my friends birthday she got lamb chops & I got the Tokyo bowl it was fantastic...we got the 40 dip & pot stickers..all so yummy

Food was very salty. The portions were erher very small or very large. There wasn't any salt (didnt need to add salt) or pepper on the table. The server behaved like she was scar of us, but she was kind.

Came into 40 for the first time today. As we sat waiting patiently for some kind of service that took what seemed like forever just to get a drink order, a roach was on the wall next to us!! A roach!!! This is a very high priced place and to see a roach after waiting for some resemblance of service I am not impressed at all. I will not be back to this restaurant ever!!

I was here for a group meeting so limited menu but the Prime Rib was delicious. Cooked perfectly. Seasoned well to have a good addition to flavor but not overpower the wonderful meat they serve. I will be returning to try their full menu ( a few times for sure). Location is almost a little tricky to find. The decor is very nice and makes it feel comfortable. Excellent wait staff. Can't wait to go back.
