Such a great restaurant! My friend's uncle and aunt own this wonderful restaurant; it is a must visit restaurant indeed! The food is great, and the owners are super friendly and welcoming! This restaurant makes downtown Portland a better place. All these dishes are way too good to describe, go try it out! Will visit again when we are in town.

The food had nothing to do with Lebanese food, the worst food experience i have ever had, it’s sad that restaurants will claim they have authentic food but serve you food that has no taste

My visits to Al-Amir are always like eating at a friends house, they greet you like old friends, remember your drink preferences, what food you had. Its amazing. The space in a historic building is fabulous, and look out for the belly dancers, you are transported to Beirut every time.

Lovely place with wonderful people and really good food. Ordered the “Lebanese Tour” for our table and got a wonderful sampling of hummus, baba ghanooj, pita, stuffed grape leaves, fattoush, rice, grilled vegetables, falafels, and chicken, lamb, & beef kafta kabobs. Delicious meal and so much food that we were stuffed at the end of the meal. I highly recommend it!

The best Lebanese food in the Pacific NW. Great food and great service always. Mo is a great guy and he makes you feel home at his beautiful restaurant. The roasted lamb dish and the grape leaves are the best. I go to Portland specifically to eat there and then comeback to Seattle.

The food and service were beyond expectation. Now for the reason we will never go back. We received the bill. There were five of us. We used three different credit cards. After adding a 20 per cent tip we got back our receipt with an additional 5 dollar plus service charge. This service charge was added on top of the tip we rolled into the bill.

Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection 😍😍😍. By far, the best lebanese spot I’ve tried in Portland. Highly recommend the Shish Tawook, Kofta and Lamb dish for Entrees. Fattoush for Salad Hummus, Baba Ghannooj, Falafel, stuffed grape leaves (Warak Enab) and Hawawshy for appetizers. The service is next level. Lydia and Moe treated us like VIPs. Yay for large gluten free menu for me and vegetarian for my DIL. We had the roasted veggies appetizer, sauce was fantastic. My husband and I had kafta. Flavor was delicious, but meat was a little tough/dry. My son had a vegetarian mixed player that we all nibbled from. Not a fan of the tabouleh. But the baba ghanouj is the best I have ever had anywhere! Staff was extremely hospitable. Portions were generous.

Excellent traditional Lebanese food. The lamb shank, homemade yogurt sauce, and rice were outstanding. Very good food, high quality. Their wine bottle prices were very good, and the selection was fair, but good enough for a nice meal. Family owned and run for over 30 years. Wife, son and I. We shared two salads. The portions were sufficient for three of us, the ingredients, fresh and, overall, flavorful on the subtle side. We also shared a hummus plate with chicken shawarma on top. None of us had seen this direct combination in the past; normally they are separate. But it was classic shawarma and hummus. Sizeable portion sufficient for three of us to share along with the accompanying pita. For mains, my son and I had cubed lamb with rice. It was somewhat disappointing insofar as it was difficult to detect much in the way of middle eastern spicing, perhaps an unfortunate concession to northwest palates. It was also a bit on the chewy side. The rice was nothing special, though competently prepared; again without much added flavor. My wife had lamb shank. However, it came in a pile with no bone. It is literally the first time in decades of dining out, including middle eastern restaurants from Portland to San Francisco, that we had encountered lamb shank without the shank. And it was not a good difference. The bone contains flavorful marrow and seems to help the meat retain its flavor and juices. The waitperson claimed that most people prefer the meat without the bone. I am skeptical. If it is true, so much the loss for most people. I had a soda, wife had a glass of wine and son had a competent cocktail. With 15% tip, Service was timely and pleasant. The environment is quite nice. $160. It is questionable whether we will return to this restaurant. I had eaten at a take out place in New Orleans called Shawarma on The Run where, for $22, I had a significantly more flavorful and satisfying meal. Al Amin needs to reconsider both its scant menu and some of its preparations. The environment is there, but not the food, notwithstanding the puzzling rave reviews to the contrary.

This place is the real deal! My husband and I used gift cards to dine on a Wednesday. We had not been to downtown Portland because the homeless/drug environment is not pleasant. We were able to park in front of this beautiful building that used to be the Bishops house. Atmosphere was really “old town”. I have been lukewarm in the past about Middle East fare so Al Amir was an unexpected surprise. First off, the red wine was as good as I have had in any restaurant. The combo appetizer had the BEST hummus with plentiful pita bread. I ordered the chicken kabobs and the spice they used left me wanting to come back right away. My husband ordered lamb and it was a very generous portion. The service was very warm and attentive. We came back several days later and was greeted by Mo who made us feel so appreciated. He remembered our wine selection and told us to order anything off the menu and they would make it work. This time I ordered the shrimp kabobs and thought I died and went to heaven… I gave my husband one and he felt the same. One of the owners, Lydia, spoke to us and we told her how impressed we were and we were their new best customer. They have been in business for 33 years and have had to adapt to the Portland issues. Used to be vibrant /open lunch and dinner and now are only open limited hours. Lydia has been very involved giving back to the community (in one case Transitional Youth) also meeting with city leaders to help Portland come back to its old self. She wore a shirt with “faith” on it. She was so determined that things would get better. Please go to this restaurant, it deserves all the support they can get. PS: they sell their wonderful hummus at FM, Safeway and other. Try their hummus and it will definitely lead you to try the restaurant!

Al Amir restaurant is a wonderful location for a delicious meal. We were at a conference and the session went late into the evening. Many of us were very hungry at that last session. We threw together a large group of people who wanted to socialize and relax. I suggested all Amir restaurant because I had seen that it had great reviews. My husband called and the owner a wonderful woman was willing to seat 20 of us or so. She said it would have to be family style and we were happy with that. When we arrived the front door had a beautiful old-fashioned sort of stencil on it. We were escorted into the back and we had a large table set out with clean linens all prepared for us even though we had called only maybe 45 minutes earlier. We sat down and were immediately served drinks of our choosing. I had a delicious lemon drop but other people were ordering Lebanese margaritas. Most of us being unfamiliar with the Lebanese Margarita had no idea what was in it but I recalling the bartender owner mentioning a variety of beautiful items that were included in it. As soon as half of our group arrived they began serving hummus that was so creamy and delicious with homemade pita bread in piles. They provided big amounts of food I couldn't even believe how much. Then dolmus came followed by falafel and baba ganoush, and chicken shawarma, and these little pizza like things. So many varieties of food, so much food that everyone had their fill. We were happy people were cheering when the food was coming. As more people straggled in, the owner kept adding tables until we had 27 at the table! The service was great. They always had food or beverage is coming our way. The owner even took a picture with us. I hope in the future to visit the AL Amir again in order to have the great food and to see the owner of the restaurant. If you get a chance to go to the Al Amir in Portland, don't pass it up.

Best humus and falafel I’ve had and honest I’m not a huge fan of either because it’s usually dry but I’m craving theirs now! So good. I’m also gluten free (celiac) and they were supper accommodating and almost their entire menu is GF.- only 2 items were not. The shrimp and chicken dishes were killer and I loved the Lebanese margarita. Perfect balance of veggies and meat.- they also have A LOT of vegetarian options. AND they had a dancer! First off there are quite a few good Lebanese food places in this city, so the competition is high. We ordered take away Kafta Kebob, Shish Kebob, Hummus and a salad. The meals came with light fluffy, ever so slightly under seasoned rice. Which in my book is better than soggy over salted rice, like at some places. The Kafta didn’t come with hardly any vegetables that we had become accustomed to (maybe an incorrect expectation set by other establishments) and the meal was not on a skewer. it was a nice mix of lamb and beef and tasted good but didn’t have the kebob look. The Shish kebob was also off the skewer and tasted good. The hummus was delicious with plenty of pita bread. The salad salata al amir was good , nice nothing to write home about. Visually the food is outclassed by some other places, but we enjoyed our meal. Critically I think a touch more care in the seasoning department could go a long way to making the taste better. If I could give 3.5 stars I would. So much potential, would love to see the quality increase a little. Prices were in line with other similar restaurants.

Firstly, the restaurant is in the old Bishops house in downtown Portland and listed on the national register of historic places. Secondly, we were greeted by the owners and made to feel like old friends. They were very generous with their time and attention, felt like we could be friends. Thirdly, authentic Lebanese food prepared from scratch by cooks who have been there since the present owners took possession 30 years ago. Being from Detroit, my friends and I recognized what we saw on the menu and what is resting now in our tummies. Even a very nice red blend wine from Lebanon, As well as the falafel, hummus, Shawarma, Kafta, freshly baked pita, perfectly cooked rice. He asked us what we wanted to eat and he made up platters surrounding those choices: vegetarian plate, shish kebab plate And my lamb of many varieties. I hope I’m making you hungry. This was our last meal in Portland and a fitting finale to the great diversity we have encountered here.

Haven't had Lebanese food before. This was fantastic!!! Tahini sauce on the KHUDAR roasted cauliflower...I couldn't stop eating this. It's a must go.
