had an amazing experience while eating here! service was great and we didn’t have to wait too long for the food to arrive, and the ambience was peaceful and relaxing. sushi was also very unique and delicious.

Very hospitable staff, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was really soothing. Would recommend to anyone, sushi avid or newcomer.

Good meal at this Asian restaurant with an eclectic menu. While we thought it was Japanese food, there were a lot of other items on the menu. My daughter-in-law had a chicken platter with vegetables; I had duck with mashed potatoes and my husband had lamb chops.

Excellent flavor and complexion; generous cuts of sashimi and clearly solid quality of fish. The special treat, however, was the service. I came in after a doctor’s appointment while waiting for a ride, not realizing until I was already sat that they wouldn’t be open for another 45min (the door was opened up already and the tables set, which threw me off from the fact). Regardless, they kindly insisted I stay for lunch. Even while finishing opening procedures, their service was timely, respectful, and fully accommodating. Despite me intruding during their opening, I was never made to feel like a bother. Between that and the terrific lunch, I’ll absolutely be coming back - give ‘em a shot!

Aozora seated me and my friends, and it took them nearly 30 minutes to take our order, then another 1.5 hours to get the food. A couple had come in after us, got their order, finished, and paid before we got our food. Food was good but not worth the wait, and I didn't feel full after the chirashi sushi. Had the wait time been shorter and larger portions were served, I'd return. But I would not return given the experience I had.

So it took us 20mins to get a table then an additional TWO HOURS OF SITTING to get our food. we even saw people who came AFTER us being served before us and we only received our food after complaining and then it took them five mins to give us our food. even with the wait, the food was OKAY. it wasn't worth the price but it was decent. I did speak to some people who ordered their food "to go" and I suggest just ordering food for pickup from them. all in all, it wasn't bad the food but the wait times are definitely not worth it... there were also people who came after us, who were served before us and even left before we even received our meals.

Really wanted to like this place but it tasted like bad Japanese food in the mall. Sushi was chewy. Udon noodles were over sweetened and Teriyaki dishes were underwhelming and with the slimmest shavings of vegetables. Won’t be back.

The Sushi Sandwich specialty roll was so delicious!! The Twister is also a must have! Enjoyed eating the Out of control hand roll as well.

Aozora is a lovely fusion restaurant in Montclair. The decor is simple and clean. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The Tuna Tataki Roll and the Aozora Roll were yummy. But be sure to order the cod with sautéed veggies was perfect and light. The crème brûlée cheesecake was amazing!

I enjoyed myself, this was a really cute space to come for valentines or if you want a calm dinning experience

haven’t been able to keep food down for a few days, but i had one bite of a sweet potato roll from here and remembered life is worth living and this too shall pass. thank you

Food was great. Service can be a little slow but I don’t mind that, especially because they tend to be very busy.

I came to this restaurant to enjoy a great taste of sushi,when I received the menu, and asked how many pieces in one roll,the waitress told me that it’s going to be around 15-16 pieces per roll,I was like “that’s great,okay”,what I received at the end was literally 8 pieces per roll, after I told them that waitress gave me the wrong information, woman said “oh yeah she told you wrong information,I KNOW” like I was paying for 15 pieces not for those 8 that I got at the end.

Very nice & clean atmosphere. Love the wall with ornaments all over. 10/10 on all sushi. Will be back!!

We are vegan. It is difficult to find really, really good vegetable sushi. Aozora takes so much care with theirs. I have had the avocado sushi roll twice now. It is perfection. I still can't figure out how they can get such perfect avocado every time. No hint of brown, perfect ripeness, beautiful and creamy. The sweet potato sushi is the best I have ever had. The tempura on the sweet potato is perfectly crispy and holds up in the sushi roll. We also ordered the pumpkin soup, and they were able to omit the shrimp and keep it vegan for us. So good and different from other pumpkin soups I've had. The chives were a great addition. We shared the tofu terriyaki, which was not only beautiful, but delicious. Tender, delicate triangles of silken tofu with a perfectly light and crispy tempura with a hint if salt. The terriyaki sauce was subtle and delicious. I was so excited to eat, i forgot to take photos first. Was so pretty when it arrived. Also, staff was very helpful, friendly, and very attentive. They were able to answer my concerns about food allergies and ingredients.

The sushi is fresh and delicious! Try the Sexy Roll, you won't be disappointed; the atmosphere is calm and serene.

2 of their dishes are in my top 5 favorite dishes of all time. The duck and Chilean sea bass are out of this world. Everything else is fantastic as well. The sushi is fresh and well-crafted and even the fried rice is great. Every dish is executed perfectly. Don’t sleep on this place.

So I came here with a friend they messed up my order (I ordered chicken fried rice and they gave me shrimp) so I sent it back. They didn’t actually remake the rice they just plucked out the shrimp. I couldn’t even take one bite because it was so nasty. I told them and sent it back and unlike a decent business establishment and removing the item, they still charged me. I spoke with the owner and she caught and attitude and still kept the charge. If this is how they wanna be, then they can expect to never see me again. Learn some common sense and basic business skills.

Great atmosphere, modern design. Very good food. You won’t wait for your food for more than 20mins. Everything we had was delicious. Servers are very friendly.

great food but the service wasn’t the best. i could barely hear our server when he was talking & it wasn’t even loud in the restaurant & he was definitely lacking in the customer service department in general. they forgot to give me one of my sushi rolls that i ordered which isn’t a big deal but it didn’t come until we were done with all of our other food. i tried to tell 3 different people to cancel it but they weren’t understanding what i was saying. another customer nearby was having an issue with their meal too.

I've come to Aozora multiple times with a friend because we genuinely enjoyed their sushi. However, the last time was a complete dud. For several weeks, we would order the Uni (sea urchin) and were initially impressed with the quality and presentation. However, the last time we went, the uni was very grainy and tasted like it had been sitting in a refrigerator for a while. The color itself was also a grayish yellow and normally, uni is a vibrant orange/yellow. When we approached the servers about this, they were very dismissive, hence the one star review. If the quality/service improves, I may consider returning.

I generally order from this restaurant every Friday. Uni, spicy salmon with avocado &/or with cucumber are some of the options I order. I have been happy with the sushi from this establishment up until last week. I spent over 100.00$ for my entire order… 72.00$ of the order was for rancid, gritty, bad Uni!! The color was completely off. It looked beige rather than the bright orange color that it normally is! After ordering Uni from this establishment on Fridays for over 3 months consistently, I’m sure you can imagine my surprise! When I called to advise of this issue, after speaking to the Owner/Manager, I realized that I would NEVER return. To patronize me with weak excuses as to why the sushi looked & tasted as it did was beyond the scope of what I could & would comprehend! Beware… there’s absolutely nothing worse than spending a substantial amount of money for disgusting, hideous sushi!!

Aozora is one of those places that you'll walk pass and miss a fortune. The food here is phenomenal. Atmosphere and ambience are fantastic. Great place for any type of celebratory lunch or dinner. Staff is very attentive and service is great. We enjoyed the miso soup, followed by Vegetable Fried Rice - Philadelphia rolls, Fire Dragon, Red Spider, Salmon Lover and Omakase Sushi & Sashimi Combo's. To satisfy your sweet tooth after the all that soy sauce, try the Mango Mousse Cake and Cheese Cake. Finished it off with cappuccino's and an expresso. I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed.

I loved the Udon noodles with beef and the Fire Dragon roll.

Very enjoyable sushi experience. The sushi is really fresh! I enjoyed so many rolls but I specifically enjoyed their scallop nigiri as well as their ikura nigiri. Definitely recommend ordering those from here if you enjoy them!

Went for lunch so we didnt order much, but the rolls we ordered were very fresh and tasty.. spicy tuna and NJ rolls were seasoned well. My daughter loved the california and avacado rolls as well. The only drawback was they lack of a Chicken Katsu (fried chicken tenders), my youngest daughters favorite..

This place is absolutely delicious, but don't come hungry because they take about an hour to get food out. Seriously - Busy, Slow, it doesn't matter, your food will come out when you're putting on your jacket ready to leave. But, it's very good. But not good enough to justify this when there's literally dozens of restaurants w/in walking distance. I seriously just watched a table get their food while putting on their jackets on to leave, I'm not playing around. This is my second time here, and if you check my review history I almost never leave bad reviews. But we've been here 50 minutes and are still waiting for our entrees.

This place definitely does not understand the concept of ordering ahead online. When someone pays for an order is there food for a specific time they expected to be ready I have downtime. This was the third time now I’ve had to deal with sitting there for 20 minutes for my food, and I will never go back

We had a pre-concert meal here. The sushi and rolls were good. The servers were very conscientious about making sure they had the order correct and were bringing the food out in the correct order. No alcohol. BYOB

I like the place, wasn't that crazy about the dumplings ( if I was you, skiped) but the rest of the dinner was pretty good. I got vegetables and shrimp tempura, nice portion, well fried, also a udon chicken soup, and some sweet potato tempura sushi roll. Overall is good price relation with quality. Nice ambiance, look nice for a date.

I thought the food was excellent. Some of the best shrimp tempura I’ve ever had. The place was not incredibly full, but I think it should be. This place is absolutely rockstar! I’m very satisfied with my meal. Highly recommend.

THIS IS HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE SUSHI SPOT IN NJ The staff is super friendly, they don’t rush you out the restaurant, food is 10/10 for quality and taste, and their BYOB policy makes it great for date night or a calm night with the girls. I have never been so compelled to write a review but Aozora deserves 5 stars. I always get their spicy miso soup, a mix of their speciality rolls, and that flourless chocolate cake is to die for. My go to forever <3

Tasty sushi. We have been a couple times and enjoyed it. Fair prices and BYOB policy makes it economical. Decor a bit more upscale than some of the other spots in Montclair so can work as a sushi date night or takeout.

Had the spicy miso soup, 17 piece sashimi, shrimp udon stir fry all of them were good. Staff is quick and efficient. Not somewhere I'd go on a date to, but if you're in the mood for sushi and sashimi on a random Wednesday, it's not a bad place to go.

A little place we went to before seeing a show across from the Wellmont theater. Staff was very friendly, food was exquisite and atmosphere was very relaxed.

Very disappointed 😥 We have come here 2x: The first time was on a week night and it was decent service. And we were so excited to come back for the 2nd time... But when we came on a Friday night....first off, we got called a half hour before our reservation to be told they are rescheduling for an hour later! We made the reservation as soon as they opened at 12 p.m.. Then we show up and still had waited 15 minutes to be seated. Then to make it worse, the actual food services was INSANELY slow. After we placed our order, we had to wait a total of 2 hours before we got our food....not to mentioned we had to hunt servers down to get water. It was very frustrating!! While the sushi was delicious the actual rice dishes were unevenly seasoned and portioned and when we complained about that, we were met with condescending tones and a fight all to comp at least 1 dish. Seriously, who tells guests we should be more understanding of wait times when there is a show at the Wellmont??! How would anyone know that unless they went? Not okay at all! I would say order take out but don't dine in. You will not be treated how a guest should.

Every time I go to the Wellmont Theater for a concert, I make a beeline to Aozora! Sit at one of the two window tables and enjoy the people passing by.

Such a hidden gem in Montclair. Such affordable prices and the staff is so sweet. I love their sushi and miso soup. Their fried rice is okay though. Can’t wait to go back and try more dishes.

This little gem has my taste buds inspired into a new realm of exotic tastes that are head and shoulders above most Asian flavors I have encountered which is hard to do. The preparations and sauces are shockingly incredible and truly a culinary experience that I will have to return back to. That compounded with a very reasonable tab makes this a rare find.

3.5 stars but rounded up to 4. I had ordered the Chef Deluxe which is the long plate. The other plate was a filet mignon sushi and the white plate is an Aozora special which was kind of like a lite version of what I got. I consider the Chef Deluxe like a pseudo omakase because everything was presented together instead of one at a time (however I was not sitting at the sushi bar.. it appeared to be "closed" or being used for takeout bag storage) The sushi, sashimi, rolls, etc are exactly what you would expect. The wasabi was fake (as expected it's horseradish). The fish was fresh enough to me as nothing tasted "off." (Ordering uni usually helps me figure out how fresh the seafood is but I decided not to order it that day) Overall I enjoyed my meal and would go back in the future.

Picked Up "AMAZING TUNA" Rolls, with "SPICY MAYO" on a side. Highly Recommended place. Tasty and Satisfying.

Montclair's premier sushi spot is very busy so bring two bottles for this BYOB establishment. The service was slow, soup was cold, appetizers were late but the sushi 🍣 was DELICIOUS. Try it out, maybe your service experience will be better.

Primarily Japanese food with a few French options. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Lunch specials are a good deal and served on Saturdays as well. Lots of sashimi, sushi, roll, and hand-roll options.

Their lunch specials are great. Sushi rolls we tried are all very tasty and the ingredients are always fresh. Portion is generous. Customer service is superb - I made a mistake in the online order and the restaurant was willing to make a change at no extra cost even though I called at the last minute (ie the food I mistakenly ordered was already made). Delivery is super fast and COVID- safe!

So I stopped by this place to get some lunch. I called in my order of the vegetable udon lunch special with miso soup. It came to about $10.64. When I arrived I found parking on the street not too far. I walked in and was greeted by the lady that took my order. I told her my name and she handed my food to me. I paid by the exit door with credit card and left. When I got in and ate I enjoyed the miso soup and the udon was ok. It had a sweet taste to it which I had to add spice to make it more to my liking. I had an ok experience.

Can't believe the food I had here recently. The specials menu was exciting and good change of pace from normal Sushi offerings you can get anywhere. Prices were reasonable and BYOB is always a plus.

Aozora is my favorite sushi spot in Montclair! Their sashimi is always fresh and I love their European fashion on dishes I have got in the past. Here I ordered the Montclair roll and Red Spider roll in addition to their various sashimi options. Definitely recommend!!!!

I have been going to Aozora for over ten years and I have never been disappointed. I eat in this wonderful restaurant at least weekly. Of lately I have been eating the appetizers as tapas and hay tried most of the items in the menu. Highly recommend, on of the best restaurants in Montclair

We have had Japanese food that is excellent many times at a Aozora Tonight we decided we wanted a French meal delivered to us and it was superb We had excellent escargot followed by my wife’s duck breast and I had an excellent rack of lamb with 8 ribs that was well seasoned I heartily recommend trying the French side of this restaurant

Very good sushi, inventive and delicious hot dishes too, with a fun combination of Japanese and French style dishes, and byo. Covid precautions taken seriously.

Went there for my birthday... two years in a row so it may become a new tradition. Booths are tall to allow your group to feel private, food is great and the BYOB is perfect!! Staff is very accommodating and understanding.

Unbeatable sushi for take out. I was always wondering why this place is so empty. They are serving the best sushi you can get around here... in dining service was slow at times but since this is not an option right now Aozora is our number one choice right now
