The food here is amazing, anything you get you will not be disappointed. The staff is extremely friendly and really pay attention to their customers. I personally always get the chicken shawarma and ask for extra garlic paste, hits the spot every time. You also must try the yogurt drink called Ayran, super good and very healthy. 5 Stars all day for these guys.

I usually purchase the falafel platter. When the restaurant first opened it was delicious. Today I ordered the same platter. Over the past few months, I have ordered 3; each time, it was not as good as the first order. Today was the worst one I've eaten. It is a simple platter to make so NOT sure why it keeps getting worse. I will not be ordering again.

I read reviews of the shawarma being the best someone ever had and had to see the hype. I can say that I agree that it’s some of the best I’ve ever had! Just found a new go to place!

I did get photos of the inside since they were close to closing (so sorry for coming in so late!) but they have a gorgeous green faux viney wall with plenty of seating. The food is ALWAYS fresh and high quality. My boyfriend and I got a chicken and a beef platter and an order of their 8 count falafel. Holy cannoli y’all. SO. FREAKING. GOOD. so filling, so fresh, so flavorful and so freaking worth it. Not only is the food top tier but the customer service is as well AND the prices are extremely reasonable. We had dinner tonight and we’ll have enough for lunches tomorrow. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND Basically Halal.

I came in with my family while on a long road trip. This place was really tasty, the presentation was on point, tasted phenomenal and the owner is a great guy!

This is my favourite takeout spot south of the river, perhaps in all of RVA. The poutine is genius and hot, the boys are quick and friendly, and despite the massive portions, we never have leftovers. Catering is also reasonably priced and equally delicious. I want to have them again for my birthday. The market next door is also a top spot for so many hard to find items in my own cooking and snack pantry. I wish these guys all the best and hope they consider expanding to a spot across the river with more foot traffic such as Carytown. I believe it could be the start of something huge for them and bring a much needed perfect shawarma and sauce to the rest of Richmond.

decent food at very reasonable price

I Enjoyed the chicken shawarma. I have never tried one before and it did have different flavors than I normally eat, it was good. It is not a lot of food but a fair size for a sandwich type item. My daughter got the kids 3 p. chicken tenders and that was a large amount of food lots of fries, extra crispy chicken tenders, piping hot. We also tried the chocolate baklava it was good and very sweet, I think I prefer traditional baklava but I am glad I tried it. I was very surprised they were not busy at all, Wednesday at noon.

Nice clean place & decent customer service but not much to say about the food, the presentation is very good but the taste is very bland, I don’t think they even use any marination on the meats which actually makes it very blend kinda no taste at all. I wish I could say more about this place, it’s just average halal food.

Saying it's AMAZING doesn't do it justice. I go once a week to get my shawarma fix! Am looking forward to trying the lamb platter soon, but the shawarma is just sooooo good! If you haven't stopped by, make plans to immediately. Best I've had in years. The guys are wonderful and it's right next to Petra Store too!

I ordered philly cheesesteak, but I got shawarma in a cheesestake bread. Even then, the meet was overcooked, ordered falafel that was burned. Wasted my money today.

We ordered Basically Halal for pickup for a quick lunch close by. Everything was delicious- especially the falafel. Food was ready super quick and they kept it warm til pickup. Excited to order again!

I recently traveled to the Richmond area from Northern Virginia and decided to check out Basically Halal based on a friend’s recommendation. It was amazing! The food was sooo good—it’s the closest thing to authentic Palestinian shawarma and falafel you can get in Virginia. I’ve tried a lot of shawarma and falafel in Virginia, and Basically Halal has the best! The flavors are spot on, and the quality is top-notch. If I’m ever in the area again, I know exactly where I’m going. The customer service was top-notch too. Highly recommend!

I’ve ordered food from here a couple of times and it’s been stellar. I’ve had the falafel shawarma and platters and they are 10/10. It’s hard to find good and affordable plant based options without going to downtown and they definitely delivered.

Mix platter was good. The meat is fresh and tastes like authentic shawarma meat. Great service. Plenty of sauces to choose from. The rice was a bit too bland for my liking though. Lots of seating available. Good halal food.

This is a great local business with tasty food and large portions. If you are a fan of Middle Eastern food, this place is a must stop. If you have never tried it, stop in and grab a Platter (the mix has steak and chicken, or my favorite is the chicken but also falafel - which are chickpea fried balls). I am not a fan of baklava, but theirs looks freshly made and tasty. The pistachio cake is unique, and the flavors are suttle. I highly recommend Basically Halal.

Ate here for the first time yesterday, and it was my first time eating Halal. Great food and great service. I got the Mixed Plate, with chicken steak and rice. Flavor was amazing! Great portion size for the price. I've been telling everyone I know about it since last night lol, and I'll be going back soon! The owners mom recommended I check them out and I'm really glad I did!

I come here almost every time I am south of the James. The platter is absolutely delicious (I could have a full plate of their sumac onions and drink their sauces). 10/10 recommend to anyone that loves Middle Eastern cuisine.

Craving shawarma? In need of some falafel? Gotta get you hands on Middle Eastern inspired poutine? Look no further. Tucked away, this hidden gem is an absolute must. Super fast, super tasty, super filling. Large portions so everything is very sharable. I recommend getting a platter and poutine of your choice for 2 to 3 people.

We heard about this take out place from 45 miles away. It was worth the drive. Dine-in is very basic but there are tables inside and outside. We had the Beef Platter, Falafel and a Chicken Shawarma wrap. Baklava and Pistachio Cake for dessert at home. We were too full to eat it with dinner. Definitely recommend. Don't miss the market next door for pickled turnips and all manner of Dates.

I lived in New York for 7 years after college and practically survived off the halal street carts. Since moving back to Richmond a few years ago, it's been impossible to find decent shawarma and halal cart-style food. Finally, we tried Basically Halal, ordered the chicken platter, and it tasted just like the NYC street carts, except it had more pickled veggies than normal, which was a welcome surprise. The rice was fragrant and tasty, the meat tender and juicy, and the white sauce was generously poured all over. Every bite was delicious. The staff was also very friendly, and we met the owner, who was very sweet and personable. I wish they would open a location in The Fan. Can't wait to go back and eat more!

Fresh food. Clean establishment. Friendly staff. We had the chicken shawarma wrap and beef wrap with a side of fries. Fries and the fry sauce were great. Loved the garlic sauce too! A+

Food is solid but mostly not exceptional. The poutines are good, the wraps are solid, but the fries are stringy and only really work with the poutine. The probiotic sodas available are a novelty but also genuinely bad, and there's not much seating space.

I ordered from door dash and unfortunately the restaurant gave my order to another person. But I like basically halal so much that I actually reordered and went to pick up my order. To my disappointment, the salad was really soggy with no crunch and it barely had any vegetables, it was just all around a disappointing meal, definitely was not worth the drive. And then when I asked what happened with the earlier DoorDash order, I didn’t even get an apology, I just got excuses and a “it all worked out”. Still a good place but could have better quality control and definitely better customer service.

I went around 6pm today for the first time and got a Chicken and rice platter with extra salad and hot sauce on the side and it was so so good. The ambiance and aesthetic of this place was also a nice plus. 😋

Small n cozy but their food is food

Finally a local place for when the cravings for chicken over rice hits. Food was excellent and the service made you feel genuinely welcomed, 10/10. Will be coming back.

The first time I ordered here? Incredible. Even traveled well (I ordered delivery). The second time was marred by finding curly black hair in my food. Perhaps I’m sensitive but seeing someone else’s hair in your food is disgusting. The first time was so good I told several friends, who ended up ordering. I wouldn’t order from here again just based on the hair. So gross.

Their chicken shawarma rice platter is good! There burgers can be better!

This place is a hidden gem. The food was so flavorful and fresh. Tried beef and chicken shawarma along with hummus and falafel. It was all so good. The garlic sauce is a highlight!

The atmosphere is great but don’t judge how the book look by it’s cover by the owners. There attractive looking but food no. The chicken platter was not the best I had chicken was dry and for the price it wasn’t worth it. The beef shawarma was also dry as well like they left the meat out over time and bread tasted store bought not even fresh. Overall, if you wanna see nice men looking to distract yourself this is the place but food no might as well get some at 7/11.

Never heard of "Basically Hala" before or the dish I had Shawarma Chicken & Beef Mix Platter. I found them on Doordash and glad I did. The portion was huge and delicious. I definitely will be back!😋

I was very excited to try this little place that's definitely needed in this area. Service was good overall and the food was tasty. Good ingredients used, good flavors, with very generous portion size for the reasonable price point. Only complaint is that the presentation was very sloppy.

We recently heard & read about a couple of local hs graduates who started this small business. Featuring shawarma and other Middle Eastern fares, we were interested in trying them out, and were pleased with what we found. For the uninitiated, shawarma is all about the delicious sauces that accompany the seasoned meat – typically garlic, yoghurt, hummus or tahini and the secret ingredient: pickled vegetables: pickled cucumbers, turnips, onions, and even carrots or mangoes. As a platter, which we had, the meat used for the shawarma is adorned atop a bed of tender basmati with the aforementioned pickled vegetables and covered with a tahini and pomegranate molasses. The portions are generous and could be split between a couple or be saved for another meal at home. There is a small dining area, and take out was busy. We really enjoyed our meals and would definitely return.

The gentlemen at basically halal catered our organization’s event of close to 400 people and everyone was blown away by how great the food was. We ordered the chicken platter and falafel platter and they all arrived hot and individually packed. The fact that they were vegan, vegetarian, halal, and gluten free, was really impressive and it went a long way in keeping people happy. There were so many compliments about the food being flavorful and fresh, everyone wanted to know the caterer information so they could order for themselves later. Zach and his team were very helpful and patient, even when the order had to be changed multiple times. We will for sure be ordering from them again!

My husband and I come here every month or so. The food is delicious and the staff is great! Highly recommend the platters or wraps.

Shawarma was excellent! Fries decent but not mind blowing. A little tight inside and our table had some food scraps on it but not a huge mess . Try this place out!

Found out about this place after seeing it featured on an Instagram reel and was impressed with the large portions of food for a cheap price. Ordered the chicken shawarma platter and umami tsunami fries platter, which was about a 20min wait. This place is definitely worth it for the huge portions, but the flavors didn't really stand out that much to me, hence the 4 stars. The physical location is kinda small with limited seating but looks very new and trendy. Most people were ordering takeout or picking up. The employees we interacted with deserve a shout-out, a group of fit young guys who were all super friendly and positive, great vibes from them!

Absolutely delicious. We didn’t expect a lot for our first time trying this place because it was packed and that usually takes away from the quality but that wasn’t the case at all! This will be a regular treat for our family. This shawarma is the real deal.

Best Halal restaurant I’ve been to. 💯

Got the mix platter. Both chicken and beef were dry and cut into thin slivers which didn’t help. Rice was dry as well, like it had been sitting uncovered for a while. The amount of rice was too much for the amount of meat given. Somehow even with all of the sauce on top, the platter still tasted bland. I think charging $13.99 for the mix platter when the chicken is $11.99 and the beef is $13.99 is disingenuous. Also, a fairer price point for the platters would be a dollar or two less than the current prices.

I have been going to Basically Halal pretty much since they have opened. I always order to go when I get there. My food is always ready within 10-15min if not less. These guys work hard and it truly shows! If I ever have an issue with anything they are super willing to always make it right! Don't be afraid to ask questions if you are concerned with anything. The two main guys who started this place are always a ray of sunshine even if the day is busy! Thanks Basically Halal! Bringing some great Halal to southside!

Just bought a chicken Shawerma and a Falafel roll & they were both delicious the chicken shawerma tastes exactly like something you would get back home in Jordan and it's delicious.I highly recommend getting the garlic sauce on the side I will be back again for more!

This is my second time eating here this week and won't be my last. Their Falafel Shawarma and Falafel Platter are incredible. Crispy falafel, fresh vegetables and, perfectly cooked rice. Their sauces are also soooo good. the garlic sauce is perfectly garlicky and spreadable. The shata hot sauce is genuinely spicy with full bodied flavor. Defintely going to make this a regular takeout spot. Bonus: the staff is super friendly and professional. Glad to have them here!

Excellent menu. Some of us got the mixed platter, and others got shawarma. All seven of us were very impressed with the quality of the food. Exceptional flavor. Quick service for takeout. The restaurant was very clean and well lit. Staff was polite, hardworking. We will return soon.

Always up for a good shawarma, we saw this place featured on @noraeatsgood on IG and decided to try it. I ordered my usual beef but they were out, but this wasn’t a negative because the chicken shawarma turned out to be amazing. Gives me another reason to come back. These guys may be young, but they know what they are doing. Excellent on all counts.
