The almond tea cake is so good and the ham and cheese croissant was the best I ever had. I do wish there were a few more savory options though

Superb small selection of baked goods, served by nice people. The chocolate croissants are the best we've ever had, the brownies are luscious... The selection is small (limited number of items) but whoever is the baker at Birchgrove is world-class quality. If you want the best, go here!

Really tasty baked goods and very kind folks. It’s worth the 10-15 minute walk from the denser parts of downtown. Edit: I went back again the next day and tried more pastries. All delicious!!

We were passing through and read some good reviews so took a walk there for breakfast. We were not disappointed! Had an amazing blueberry croissant and there were so many great things to choose from. Coffee was also lovely. Quaint small shop with everything made in house. Standing to eat with little tables was no trouble at all and keeps people moving. Stream of locals into the shop said it all.

If you see a hazelnut chocolate chip cookie do not hesitate. It’s worth its weight in gold.

Go to place for cakes that never disappoint.

We stopped by off recommendation. All of their treats were made that morning which was obvious based on how fresh everything looked. I requested they cut up some treats into smaller portions to hand out. They boxed everything up for me including a cake for my son. He was very impressed by how delicious it was. I will absolutely be returning.

I never leave reviews but am sitting here eating the almond cake and it is the BEST cake I have ever eaten. Anything I get there is amazing and I am always impressed by the selection. On top of it, everyone that works there is a sweetheart. Thank you Birchgrove!!

Great pastries and expresso drinks to die for!

I always plan to go in for just a coffee and leave with a box of goodies. My favorites are the brown butter donuts (only on Sundays) and the multitude of croissants. Also a huge fan of the cake library. Easily the best bakery in central Vermont. I just wish it was bigger!

I work at Red Hen and there isn’t another place I enjoy going to every morning that Birchgrove on my way to school. No matter the length of the line, the staff are extremely efficient, kind and helpful. I love a good honey cinnamon breve and strongly suggest the chocolate croissant right out of the oven. I’m a very picky coffee and pastry person, but Birchgrove never disappoints. Highly recommend!

Hands down my favorite of all the places we visited in Montpelier! The ham and cheese croissant and maple ginger latte were phenomenal. Lots of options, friendly service, and a long (but fast moving) line so you know it’s good.

I used to live next to this bakery and got coffee and a savory scone here several times a week. My only complaint is, there aren't enough savory scones. And they do run out later in the morning. 2022 edit: still 5 stars, so good. Donuts on Sunday morning are amazing

The only thing better than the friendly, happy staff is the incredible food. You know it's a great place when locals visit. I can't recommend this bakery enough.

I have been over to Birchgrove a handful of times since moving to Montpelier and it is hands down the best energy in a bakery and cafe I've been to yet. A beautiful compliment of kind and genuine staff, remarkably tasty products no matter what you choose, and they sell a smattering of local goods that have made great options for gifts for me and others in the form of handmade pottery and dried flower arrangements. You won't go wrong taking a visit here. And if you've got time to stop, take a peek around back at the lovely little porch on the river.

We've been visiting Birchgrove Baking for about a decade. The baked goods are consistently delicious. From cakes to pasties to scones, everything is so good! Luckily I don't live nearby, otherwise this place would become a problem. :)

Amazing maple donuts that's only available on Sundays

One of my absolute favorite places in VT! High quality espresso, delicious pastries, and a warm and welcoming environment! Highly recommend the Monkey Bread, Cinnamon Twists, and Brioche. Plus they offer OATLY milk which is the king of non-dairy milks. Bravo!

Sunday's homemade donuts are to die for. Get there early (9:00AM) to get some of the best hand cut, hand fried donuts in the greater Montpelier area. The only bummer is a 6 donut limit per customer :(

A little out-of-the way but a good neighborhood spot. I got a latté, cornmeal shortbread, and key lime tart. Coffee was excellent. Shortbread was wonderfully crunchy but tender, buttery and mildly sweet. Tart was nicely done, but not nearly enough key lime. Graham cracker crust was very crunchy but way too thick, about a quarter inch. Taste of Graham overpowered the filling. Suggest a cookie crust would be better, and much, much thinner.

I had an iced maple latte and the cheddar onion scone. Both were delicious, and the service was quick and friendly. They observed social distancing protocols (only six people in at a time).

We haven't been here in two years and it was fabulous as ever, with lots of choices and all our faves. The almond teacakes were crunchy on the outside and dense tender inside, the donut muffins had the perfect cinammon crunch and the croissants were Paris worthy. And service of course was friendly and accommodating!

Had a great mocha, which almost distracted me from the GLORIOUS SCONE I got with it. Friendly service, everyone was masked, and checkout was easy with their Square terminal - I didn't have to hand my card to anyone. I'll be back.

Just ate one of your chocolate cookies after my lunch and as always BOOM. I love those chocolate chip cookies and the buckwheat as well. Never fail.

From someone that has worked in the coffee/pastry biz for almost 20 years, this is high quality stuff folks! Croissant and scones are cooked perfect and that's harder to do than most realize. Nice flaky carmelized outer layers while soft delicate middle. Nice balance between savory and sweet offerings. Maple latte was 10.0. Service top notch. Care goes into the baking and you can tell!

The food, made and served here is spectacular. It is only surprassed by the friendly, polite service. You will be well served by stopping. Montpelier's notoriety for great baked goods is only enhanced by this wonderful shop.

My fiancé and I just moved to Montpelier and live down the street from this bakery. If you take the time to find parking it is well worth it. I can’t remember the last time I had such delicious baked goods! And consistent. We’ve been twice and tried 4 different deserts and I can’t express how delicious they all were. The donuts alone have me coming back. Once you go you can see why the prices might be considered “high” they’re worth it. Don’t get me started on the coffee! I always think I want a larger latte but then I start drinking and the espresso is so rich, nothing like the chains. Classic Vermont small business that is worth the hype.

The retail portion is coffee and pastries. The coffee is very good, and the pain au chocolat I had was well above average: lots of chocolate, flaky and large. Much of their business is custom baking and institutional sales. Popular with locals who very much treat this bakery as their spot. Friendly.

I love, love Birchgrove! Such a sweet little bakery. We use Birchgrove for many different occasions requiring cakes and have never been disappointed! Our wedding cake (not a normal wedding cake, either) was made here, and it was absolutely amazing!

We ordered a holiday cake this past year, it was the classic Yule Log. LOL It looked really great and was a lot of fun. The taste was so-so. I have had many of their other confections which have all been good. I also enjoy the croissants which they have with cheese or chocolate. The coffee barista is on point.

Sublime - just don't get there too late or the tea cakes (mini cake financier of sorts) will be gone. Give yourself a treat and ask for a coffee (cortado anyone?) and pair it with a butter croissant. A baking team and staff dedicated to excellence - and it shows.

One of the best bakeries in New England. I travel all over New England for work and I can say that their desserts were a huge help in closing in multiple deals and had clients email me weeks later to ask where the treats were from as they were craving them. They also make an awesome cappuccino and the staff is super friendly. I stop in every time I am in the area.

Beware your waistline! It's really hard to say no to the stuff in here so only walk in the door if you're going to order their baked goods in addition to their delicious drinks. The the treat is worth it but this is all the butter all the sugar all the flower all the time. And it's done well.

Friendly baristas make excellent lates. Artistic, imaginative pastry chefs make delicious and attractive desserts and pastries. Their cakes to order are beautiful and delicious. My stop for coffee and scone every morning.

Beautiful buttery croissants with fabulously flakey texture. And the hot drinks are flavorful too!

No matter what day you stop by you will be greeted by friendly staff and an array of unusual and original baked goods. We particularly like the fresh english muffins which seem to appear only one day during the week. The coffee is also excellent. Not much room for sitting but then again it is mostly a take out pastry place! Don't pass it up if you are in Montpelier.

I stayed in Montpelier near Birchgrove and went there every morning for coffee and croissant. The tiny coffeeshop has interesting gifts and is quiet and private, with good coffee and food.

I must admit I was a little concerned when the case had only a few items. However, the savory scone with goat cheese and corn was delicious as was the caramel chocolate bars!! Definitely will go back!

I am a bit of a croissant snob. Rightfully so I have two french bakeries on my New York City block but Birchgrove came in raising the bar HIGH for a blueberry (if I recall) croissant which was a first for me. It was perfectly flaky and buttery. I was also impressed with the specialty lattes on the menu! This carribean princess found dulce de leche in Vermont?! Swoon! But it didn't taste like dulce de leche but I appreciate the solid attempt. If you are in town or driving by.... defintiely stop
