First time we ever had Afghan food. It was all good....the food, the service, the atmosphere. I wish I lived closer.

Excellent high-quality food, top-quality excellent service, very hospitable owners, extremely kind, very good sitting places. One of the best restaurants, the owners greet you as if you are family. Beautiful restaurant, definitely a beautiful place to eat halal-food.

Had an amazing evening here with a couple of friends. Very family friendly place w BYOB. Food was amazing - starting w Afghani bread and soup to Kababs …literally loved everything we tried, Service was amazing ! Plating, Attention to detail were top notch and priced just right. Run by some amazingly passionate people. Enjoyed the conversation with the Owner who was extremely humble and friendly. Definitely a hidden gem in Basking Ridge. Highly recommend !!!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at an authentic Afghan restaurant, and I must say, it was an exceptional experience that left me eager to return. From the moment I stepped in, the warm, welcoming ambiance and the tantalizing aromas set the stage for a truly memorable meal. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the lamb chops. Cooked to perfection, they were tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The seasoning was a masterful blend of Afghan spices that complemented the meat without overpowering its natural taste. Each bite was a testament to the chef's skill and understanding of traditional Afghan cuisine. The kabobs were equally impressive. Grilled to the perfect level of char, they were succulent and packed with a smoky flavor that only comes from expertly handling the grill. The hummus was a delightful surprise. Creamy, rich, and perfectly seasoned, it was the ideal accompaniment to the meal. It was served with naan- freshly baked, it was soft and fluffy, making it a perfect starter to whet the appetite. It was the perfect vehicle for enjoying the hummus, but honestly, it was so good that it could easily be enjoyed on its own. I can't recommend it enough for anyone looking to indulge in some truly amazing Afghan food.

Hills of Herat is THE place to go for Afghan food. We drove 40 minutes from NYC and it was worth it! The waiters gave us bread and lentil soup from the get go along with some complementary sauces. We got Bholani and Mantu as appetizers and they were very delicious. For the main course, we got Chicken Kofta, Chicken Kabob, and Herat Combo and it was well prepared. The owner, Wali, came up to us and was extremely nice and welcoming and struck a conversation with us explaining his background and origins. If you want to try Afghan food, Hills of Herat is the place to be!

Hills of Herat is an exceptional Afghan restaurant. The owner, Abdul Wali, is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home. The ambiance is inviting and carefully designed, setting the stage for an authentic culinary experience. Each dish, from appetizers to desserts, is packed with rich flavors and spices, offering a genuine taste of Afghan cuisine. The meat is incredibly tender and perfectly cooked, with every bite transporting you to the hills of Herat. It’s truly an unforgettable dining experience!

The food exudes authentic afghani flavors with the richness in the soup perfectly complimented by the bread. The platter not only looked beautiful but every component held to its own due to prolonged marination and unique but homely flavors. The rice even though were the base of the platter still on their own were fluffy and flavorful truly a commemorative experience coupled with the amazing atmosphere.

I recently dined in Hills of Herat with 9 other friends. Everyone loved the food and the experience. I can safety say that Hills of Herat is the best Afghan Restaurant in NJ. The ambiance, the service and most importantly the food is on next level.Their lamb chops and lamb kababs were tender and juicy. Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked.

The atmosphere, the attention to detail, the hospitality, the vibe and most importantly, the food - 5 stars all the way. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Lamb chops to the soup, hummus to the kabobs - lip smacking all the way.

This place is one of my favorite restaurants in BR. Ordered the hummus combo, herat combo, and afghan dumplings. All were delicious especially the bread and service was quick.

The quality of the food is well above many Afghani or middle east restaurants around here in NJ. The portion size is small and prices are little high though. The complementary lentil soup and the freshly made bread is also a nice touch for customers. The owner was also present and visit each table to check on the customers. I recommend this place.

Beautiful restaurant, excellent Food and Service! We are very grateful to the owner Mr. Abdul for his assistance to us in an hour of need!! In a dark period of our life with the death of my 36 year old nephew we reached out to Mr. Abdul for assistance to hold the Fatiah and dinner after the funeral. Abdul was extremely kind and closed his restaurant to accommodate close to 100 people in The Hills of Herat. His Staff, Service and Food was excellent. Thank you Abdul for your kindness.

Went tonight, looking forward to a nice dinner. The restaurant was not busy and I sat alone at the bar. 15 empty seats at the bar. Couldn't get a glass of water or drink for 10 minutes. Finally got a drink. Asked for a menu, never got one. After 20 minutes I asked for a check. As I was leaving, they tried to serve me a meal I didn't order. Hard to understand such horrible service when the place wasn't busy.

Came here for dinner today. Enjoyed the the hummus and falafel appetizers. We ordered sultani kabob, herat combo and chicken qorma. Meat was tender and juicy, rice was moist and very flavorful. Service felt a little rushed but I guess they didn't have much crowd so the food came very quick.

Hospitality that feels like home! Absolutely love the food - whether the signature white sauce, the moist perfectly done chicken or freshly baked in-house bread. However the hospitality and welcome at the Hills is out of this world! If you are look for fine dining in a welcoming environment this is your place.

Best Afghan food in the whole tristate area

Was one of the best fine dining experiences I have had. The Ribeye steak was one of the best that I had. Filet Mignon kabobs tasted amazing. Staff was friendly and owner came by and made sure everything was great with our service.

Tasty food, service was great, and the ambiance is unlike any other. Definitely come check them out. Filet Mignon Kabob with the spinach rice is a personal favorite.

We were 8, amazing food & amazing service. The lamb shank was out of this world. I have never ever tasted such lamb shank in my life. Other things like chicken kebob, sultabi kebob, bread, Afghani Naan were also excellent. And the best thing was their service, amazing service was provided to us. Also, in the end once we ordered green tea, the owner (Mr Abdul Sboor) came with a huge kettle & poured the green tea in our cups & chatted with us for few minutes. That was a very nice personal touch. The only thing which we didn't like was the amount of Graduity which was charged without even asking (20%), I think that is a but excessive & not at all acceptable & fair. I hope the owner will look into this. Not جائز

Amazing restaurant with delicious flavorful food, and great service. Each entree comes with lentil soup and bread. For appetizers, I had the mantu (Afghan style dumplings). For entree, I had the meatballs qorma. Both were very delicious. I also had a mocktail and the chai. This was my first time having Afghan food and I hope to be back! Highly recommend this place!

My recent visit to Hills of Herat with the board of my school's Bengali Student Association was nothing short of spectacular. I had never eaten here before, but can say this restaurant truly stands out; not only for its culinary excellence but also for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and exceptional service. From the moment we walked in, the beautiful interior made it clear we were in for a memorable evening. The restaurant provides a fine dining experience with the touches of love and home that defines Mediterranean cuisine. The food was absolutely delicious. Each dish arrived hot and bursting with flavor, perfectly timed to ensure a seamless dining experience even with the size of our group. I ordered the lamb kabob, which was incredibly tender, and took a chicken korma to go that was beautifully spiced with a pleasant heat, making each bite a delight. It think it important to mention how the owner personally took that order and made sure it came out just as my group was leaving. The staff, including the owner, went above and beyond to accommodate our large group; rearranging tables so we could all sit together and enjoy our meal together. What made our visit truly special was the personal attention we received from the owner. He was not only attentive to our dining needs but also added a delightful cultural touch by playing Bengali songs, a thoughtful gesture that resonated deeply with us. His kindness didn’t stop there. He personally served our chai, took photos for us, and even joined in to sing a birthday song for another group, showing that his generous hospitality extended beyond just us. I can not understate the warmth and friendliness of the owner. In many ways, I think of the friends I ate with as near as my own family. I love them and care for them and wished only the best for our final dinner of the semester. Hills of Herat treated them with the same devotion that I hold for them. I believe that kind of service only comes from a deep understanding and appreciation for family. Before leaving, I felt compelled to shake the owner's hand in gratitude for an evening so beautifully hosted. I wholeheartedly look forward to returning to Hills of Herat with more family and friends to share the wonderful experience that this exceptional establishment offers. Decided to check out their basking ridge location and was very pleased with my experience. The space is spacious, clean, and very welcoming. Service was very fast and received our food pretty quick. I always get the Herat Combo and it didn't disappoint. The owner I believe came by to check in on us and made sure to say bye before we left. Will definitely come back when I'm in the state.

I tried this restaurant for the first time recently and I was really impressed. The food was fantastic, delicious and flavorful. Everyone from the host to the servers were extremely hospitable and friendly. We started with the naan and lentil soup. Then ordered the lamb chops and chicken qorma. The baklava for desert ended the meal perfectly. I can’t wait to visit again!

If I could rate 0 I would…So first off, the food was tasteless and bland. Nothing I would expect of Afghani food. Highly disappointed especially because of all the high reviews. Another factor that I don’t understand is pricing - the portion is very small so I don’t feel the pricing matches what is being served. The kabuli pulao didn’t even have any salt so forget flavor and the carrots and raisins weren’t incorporated in the rice - just thrown on the side. Soggy carrots and raisins on the side with no flavor rice is not a good combo. The chicken kabob was flavorless and just tasted plain weird. I legitimately couldn’t eat it. Just a strange taste. Next, tried the mantu since we love this dish. The mantu includes red lentils that were completely undercooked / hard as can be and will make someone’s stomach hurt. Another aspect of the mantu was that the beef was gamey and the wonton wrappers were hard. A total disappointment. The sauces there are also really vinegary and lemony too much so in my opinion. I think the only good thing about the meal was the lentil soup and the bread. Servers were nice and respectful so no issue there just the food was a big no. They also had a pretty setup but they should work on the food and improving taste. I thought the meal would be spectacular because of this but it just kept disappointing me. Do not waste your time and money here and go to somewhere that serves authentic Afghani food!

I’ve never had Afghan cuisine before, and after giving this place a try, I’ve become a fan. The restaurant has a nice ambiance with great service. The bread they served us was unlike anything I’ve ever had before. It tasted heavenly, especially with the Hummus we got. We liked the bread so much that we had to order another piece. Then came the delicious Chicken Kofta. The flavors mixed together so well, every bite was perfect. We also had Mantu (Afghan-style dumplings with ground beef). To me, it was okay, but that’s only because I’m not a big fan of the meaty smell. My friend liked it though. They gave us some soup (I’m assuming lentil soup), which was as delicious as everything else we had. To end our meal with a dessert, we ordered Baklava. And theirs was the first one I had with a walnut filling, as I’ve always tried one with pistachios. That was definitely a nice surprise. The only small thing was the portion size; given the price, I felt the portion size was a little less. But overall, we had an amazing experience dining there. Highly recommend!

First and foremost, I cannot say enough positive things about Hills of Herat! From the amazing, carefully-curated, fresh food options, to the wonderful, kind, and professional and accommodating staff - everything at Hills is quality from the moment you step through the door. I have been to Hills many times for regular dining with my friends and family, and when it came time to hosting an event, I couldn’t think of a better place that would suit my needs. My mother hosted my baby shower here, and the staff, ambiance, and food were all fantastic, and each my guests shared the same sentiments! The bread, soup, appetizers, rice, and meat platters were all perfect! And I am very hard to please when it comes to food! I really appreciate all of the kindness and warmth from all of the staff at Hills, as well the wonderful experience I had at my event hosted at this location. I truly look forward to having another event at this location in the future.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated for a good dinner out with your family. Service is very good and the owner is a friendly guy who makes sure u are served properly. The bread is to die for!.. and the sauces served are generous portions. Do keep in mind that bread refills are not free,$2 per bread. We ordered the filet mignon with kabuli rice and chicken kebab with rice. Both were delicious esp the filet mignon. The restaurant is definitely on the pricey side and easily $100 for two ppl if u order an appetizer, entree and drink.

Coming to the Hills of Herat was the culinary highlight of my visit to NJ. Tucked away in a strip-mall this place is anything but a dive. The moment you walk in you know you are in for something special. From delicious appetizers to generous family-style portions (if that is what you want - we all wanted to try all the things) we were filled with delicious and surprising colors and flavors that I look forward to having again and again. The dessert is something special too - I recommend the creamy (and light-but rich) rice pudding with cardomom and the smooth milk-custard (no egg). The saffron tea was also a mild and pleasant surprise that went well with dessert.
