Food and drinks looked fancy, but savoury things were too salty, sweet things were too sweet, they overwhelms the taste of the ingredients. To be specific the two cocktails we ordered were very, very sweet. The scallop’s texture seemed fresh but I only tasted vinegar and sugar. The spätzle underneath the duck was really salty. The frosting of the two deserts (gelato and Mount Blanc) were crazy salty — they actually tasted good when I got rid of the frostings. Out of five dishes and three drinks, only the risotto was good. It was not worth 250 dollars unfortunately.

Walked in and had an excellent experience at Kali tonight. Service was attentive and friendly. Ambience was elegant but unpretentious. The food was delicious and presented well. We ordered the Crowded Beach, Scallop Tartare, Risotto and Bone-In Pork Chop. Would recommend all.

The chef's seasonal tasting menu was superb, and the wine pairing was also superb. The non alcohol pairing included all dealcoholized wines which was a pleasent surprise, allowing a designated driver to still get some wine like vibes. Of my group of three we couldn't even decide which course we liked the least because they all were soooo good. The lamb was astoundingly good. It is a no dress code place and overall it definitely has a bit of a casual vibe, but also plenty of people nicely dressed. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I ordered their seasonal tasting menu, a 5-course menu. I also did wine pairing. The first dish was the famous crowded beach. All seafood was really fresh and the seasoning did not overshadow the freshness. I extremely like the way they handled scallops. It reminded me of my favorite bean crackers back in my hometown. Most of the seafood was raw but I love raw seafood. The second dish was also scallops but seasoned differently. I like the way they also added cucumbers to the dish. The sweetness from the cucumbers and the sweetness (umami) from the scallops were indeed a great combination. The third dish was veggie risotto. In most cases I'm not a fan of green beans but the way they handled the beans was so perfect that I ended up eating all the beans on the plate. The risotto itself was slightly underwhelming though. Since the dish itself was already lightly seasoned, the truffle flakes did not add too much. However, this was in general delightful to eat. The fourth dish was the duck breast. The duck breast itself was impeccable. One of the best duck breasts I have ever tasted in my life. The skin was fried crispy and the meat was at a perfect medium rare. I like the carrot sauce a lot. It mitigated the grease coming from the duck and the sweetness also worked well with the rather salty seasoning of the duck. However, one mistake I found was the asparagus. It was overcooked and really hard to chew. I also complained to my server but since I liked the duck breast so much, I would believe that was just a rare mistake. So all I had done was to make sure the server did let the kitchen know so no other customers would need to have the same experience. The final dish was ice cream with salt cured egg yolk. It was an interesting experience and a good way to end the course. All the wines were also selected perfectly with the dish and they were also very generous in giving the wine. To conclude, I would want to visit the restaurant again just for the first dish and also the duck breast in spite of some room for improvement.

Absolutely stunning service and food! My partner and I chose to spend our anniversary here and I could not have thought of a better place. The restaurant itself was very bright and airy, very different from most fine style dining in LA. The food was all sourced from California and delivered excellent flavors without unwelcome intrusions. But the greatest of all was the service. My partner and I ordered the chef menu which featured 9 courses and we added the wine pairing to go along with it. The problem was, we got too full! Around the 4th or 5th course, we got too full to continue. The staff was so accommodating and understanding; I could gush forever about how relaxed and flexible everyone in the restaurant was. They asked what we preferred and had the two heaviest courses (duck and lamb), plus the cheese course, boxed up without question and without hesitation. Because we had the wine pairing which usually climaxes at those two courses, the sommelier did us right and chose to give us instead two servings of a reserve wine typically reserved for special guests with the dessert course. I could go on and on but, really, the super chill and accommodating staff really make this place special and I can't wait to go back again. I, at times, felt awkward asking for a coursed out menu to be boxed up, but the staff made no big deal of it and went out of their way to wish us a happy anniversary at every moment they could; we are truly overwhelmed with Kali's staff and the level of commitment they all possess. Thank you all!

Just got back from India less than a month and I was totally missing great flavorful herbal/spices Indian food. I tried street food, local mutton biryani at old Delhi , Tah Vanarasi Tholi, etc. so, I was hunting for a good Indian restaurant. This popped up at 4.3 as a rating, so I picked it. I was warned before regarding the service. So, that’s not a surprise. I saw the picture of the decor, as it was as seen. love the arch Islamic Maghul design with beautiful fabric choice and decor despite the bench that I leaned back was off the wall. Please fix it. It’s the right first table as you walked into it. But the food, oh my Lord, it was a complete disaster. I didn’t have bad food in India, not even at a simple eatery by the road side, or basement of a mall nor five star Taj Hotel. My sister asked me to rate after the lunch, I said I rated 15% of what I had in India if everything average out 100% in India. Grant it, India is huge, and I was traveling in Delhi, Utter Pradesh and Bihar, and your family are from Bangladesh. But, I had many Muslim Indian food/ curry from Malaysia too. We ordered four pieces appetizer, Papadum, mild vegetarian Dinner Feast (DF), mild Marsala chicken DF, mild lamp biryani, spicy Vindalo chicken DF. But, it turned out so mild. I thought the waiter wanted to correct the wrong so we ordered another regular Indian spicy Vindalo chicken when the waiter asked us how it tasted. But, I was charged for it. Each chicken dish has probably 5-7 small bite size chicken breast/ tofu. Mango lassi was runny. Iced tea was not the regular one but marsala, herbal, but not in a good way. I can’t get into what’s all wrong because I was literally stunned. On the way back, I said that was probably the worse Indian food I ever tasted in my life. My nephew even had red lip from Marsala chicken, likely the food coloring they use. Generally, I praised that Indian cuisine has the most delicate cuisine in the world because of its herbs. But, not here. My boss bought me to this Pakistani restaurant in Artesia years ago and I was like in a heaven. I made my mind to return there upcoming Saturday as Ramadan is done soon and Eid is on Wednesday. I sincerely hope that the family can look into the food quality. I wrote this with 100% sincere hope that you can turn the place around. As many people are world travelers, one can no longer fake it to make it. It does explain why we were the first ones to be there at closed to 1:30 pm on Sunday noon despite during Ramadan period. Ps. I did say to the staff/family that I wouldn’t want to leave a bad comments before, but I changed my mind. Because, I do think this is the only way you can get my attention. Also, it’s 200 for 5 persons out the door.

I cannot speak highly enough of Chef Kevin Meehan's cuisine. The tasting menu he crafts at Kali is world-class and beautifully represents contemporary Californian gastronomy. Highlights among the eight courses were the crudo and the risotto, but every course contributed memorably to a cohesive journey. It was undoubtedly the most casual fine dining experience I've ever had and I personally would have preferred a more typical ambiance for this level of cuisine, but the relaxed environment helped a friend who was enjoying her first Michelin-rated tasting menu to feel comfortable throughout the evening. My only (minor) complaints would be that several of the earlier courses felt rather rushed, and I also would have liked a more comprehensive and less hurried presentation of the paired wines. We also ordered a bottle (a truly lovely riesling) which was unfortunately presented at room temperature, and our glasses often sat empty for longer than I would have liked. Still, the truly memorable cuisine made the experience worthwhile (and worth coming back to enjoy again), despite these inconsistencies in service.

We were slightly worried after booking a dinner here for our belated honeymoon after reading some of the other reviews here, but Kali pulled out all of the stops. I've eaten at places owned by celebrities that taunt how many stars they have, and they don't hold a candle to Kali. We had the nine course tasting, which some complain is over priced, but this blew a $350 tasting I had elsewhere away. Decadent doesn't feel like a powerful enough descriptor for the menu the chefs put in front of my partner and I. The dishes were playful and expressive while being refined and clearly made from a place of love for the craft. I'm sorry but the 9 course tasting is and insane value for the amount of labor that goes into that meal. I'd be shocked if they're turning a profit with the army of staff they have. Anyway, every course was timed well with enough time between each plate to discuss it with my partner, enjoy our drinks, and anticipate the next plate. This type of meal is not for those in a rush, set aside two hours minimum. It was around two and a half hours from seating to check for us. Be prepared to have some of the best chefs in the game flex their skills for you. The cured egg yolk gelato was elegant in it's simplicity. I feel sorry for those who didn't understand that dish from other reviews. The entire meal was full of so many different techniques on display. I'm only a home cook, but I could tell the amount of prep that went into some of the dishes they served us. There was only one dish that didn't live up to the rest, and at any other restaurant it would have absolutely slayed. The new York strip steak was expertly cooked, and on it's own was a truly special bite of food, but it was lost on that plate full of flavors that masked the subtle smoke flavor and beefiness of a grass fed steak. Don't get me wrong the beet 2 ways on that plate were so good, but the steak was put out to pasture. That said, any time there are risks taken, there will be missteps. That dish was only a misstep because of what proceeded it. Every component of that plate is a star, but they outshine each other. It was a welcome change of pace considering I've had tastings at other restaurants for more money than Kali that put inedible A5 wagyu in front of me. The wagyu tartar was another wow moment for me. I'm no stranger to tartar or wagyu, but to somehow elevate an ingredient that most serve with minimal handling takes so much courage. Kudos on making me actually like scallops for the first time in my life. Every dish was practically licked clean. I will scrape my pennies together and hopefully dine at Kali again the next time I visit LA. I have told my local friends they MUST try it. Thank you to the staff for giving us a memory that will last my partner and I another decade together!

It was such a perfect meal until the middle, but the taste and harmony of the food were shaken and the service was terrible after all the tables except us were away. The evaluation of the food may be subjective, but the service at the end was definitely the worst. A staff clicked his tongue and served impatiently. And even the lights were turned off by someone while we were trying to pay. Someone else came and said it was a mistake to turn off the light, but I already didn't feel good. I'm a guest who made a reservation and paid a fair price. If you're going to do like that, why do you get a reservation and do business?

Kali delivers an upscale, gourmet and pricey dining experience. Michelin star rating deserved. Our party of four did both the pre-set Chef's four-course tasting menu and a la carte dining. Both ways and choices were excellent. Shellfish great, but (a la carte) New York steak had some excess fat, though. Dessert was devine. Cocktails, bottle of wine and dinners pushed the tab to almost $800, plus tip, so make sure you bring the big $$$. The service and food presentations made the experience quite special with gourmet food over-the-top good. Caution: Don't let the hole-in-the-wall exterior fool you (pretty typical for L.A.'s trendy Melrose Ave.) as inside a foodie heaven awaits. Valet parking available. Reservations strongly recommended.

OMG! Never fails to amaze how many diners convince themselves that this fake hype place is good just because it has a Michelin star, which makes you doubt the whole Michelin star thing anyway. Buyer beware.. the food is terrible in a not even trying way, the decor is minimalist and not in a good way, and the service manages impressively to be both inattentive and pretentious!

This was a great valentines date restaurant. The tasting menu was perfectly designed, and I think just the right amount of food. The wine pairing was fun to try, but I’d rather just drink a cocktail or two next time, rather than feeling like I need to finish a certain amount of wine to get my moneys worth. My only complaint is that it’s too dark if you sit outside, to the point where you can’t see your food sometimes. So if you go here make sure to sit inside. The staff was amazing and knowledgeable, which we appreciated. For the two of us it was close to $700 before tip, which is steep but worth it. I would absolutely recommend Kali to anyone, but I can’t promise a return visit from me at this price purely because there are so many other restaurants also are vying for those very few splurge worthy nights. Please please fix the outdoor lighting, it makes an enormous difference.

Amazingly, delicious, well prepared and beautifully presented chef’s tasting course menu. Also, Drew and his team were so fun to talk to. I had just gotten off a 15 hour commute / flight, feeling extremely jet lagged but keen to take in the experience and Californian culture. I had a logistical drama getting there but we all got a laugh out of it. So 5 stars for food, and 5 stars for atmosphere and service. The Negroni itself needs its own 5 star rating! Thank you Drew for your hospitality and generosity in the end.

We got the $190 tasting menu. The food was great (except the white asparagus) but the service definitely didnt meet the expectation of the reputation/ambience/price. We booked the table in advance but we got seated to an empty table with no utensils ready. The server came to our table maybe 5-10min after we got seated. Funny that we even got a call from the restaurant confirming if were coming to restaurant or not in the middle of our dinner. The service wasnt impressive at all with the price we paid.

Good food, not sure how they got their Michelin Star. I know fine dining and this was definitely not it. $75 Truffle Risotto tasted like it came from a box, the only delicious thing about it was the truffle, which I credit Mother Nature more than the chef. I ordered almost half the menu and the only thing I can say was innovative and delicious was their oysters! They were truly delicious!! Other than that, don’t expect to have your mind blown here. I would suggest Union Restaurant in Pasadena for a delicious, mind blowing Truffle Pasta! Overall disappointed with the food. Servers are wonderful, friendly and kind!

Awesome experience at Kali last night. The front of house really made our night. We had two courses and really enjoyed the textures of the duck breast and the rich, satiating flavors of the black truffle risotto. We will be back soon!

Loved the experience with lots of thanks and appreciations. We 2 girls arrived in LA with luggage and they helped take care of it so we can go for a walk before the restaurant opens. We met a colleague and shared the signature dishes we were interested. They look and taste great!! Service is very patient and friendly. And thanks again for the celebration cake and candles. Super sweet. Lots of recommendations!!!

Chef/Owner Kevin Meehan has one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. I had the Chef's tasting menu and I have to say that every bite of every dish was perfect. Even the way the flavors progressed in the first course felt like an incredible journey. The dessert was one of the best I've tasted in my life. The ambiance here was exactly what I want in an upscale restaurant. It was nice, but not pretentious.. like a neighborhood restaurant that can also blow my mind with the food and service. Jeremy was my server. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He had answers to every question I had and was knowledgeable with every dish. The service was perfect. I'll definitely be back! Thank you Kali team.

Given that it is a Michelin star restaurant, I expected better consistency in the dishes. Our starters and pasta were tasty but our aged Duck was inedible. Could not cut through it with a steak knife nor break it down enough to chew or swallow. When we informed our server they just comped a drink instead of offering to replace or bring us something different to eat.

My overall opinion of my dining experience at Kali is a mild disappointment. I ordered the Seasonal Tasting Menu which is a five course dish at $140 / person. This tasting menu includes • Duo of the Sea • Local Rockfish Crudo • Summer Truffle Agnolotti • Dry Aged Flannery Beef Ribeye • Meringue Gelato While not listed on their website menu, there is also an optional eight course Chef’s Menu that is an extension of the seasonal tasting menu, including three additional items for $190 / person. If you would rather order individual items, there is the a la carte menu available including appetizers, various dishes, and dry aged meats. The restaurant features a cozy interior with a eye catching blue color scheme. They feature both indoor and patio dining, where all parties are spaced apart by at least one table due to covid. They also feature a fully stocked bar with seats at the bar. (I had to cut out my review of the first three items, and part of the fourth, due to Google’s character limit on reviews.) The main entree is the dry aged flannery beef ribeye. Based on the items on their a la carte menu, this restaurant prides itself on its various selection of aged beefs. This ribeye was served with a layered potato side, mushroom, grilled onion, and a black garlic glaze. The beef was well cooked, having a perfect medium rare inside, and a crispy seasoned outside. The flavor had a good balance, and was neither too fatty or too bland. The dessert of this tasting menu is perhaps my favorite dish. It is a meringue gelato made from a local family farm cream. However, this item was more like a frozen cream, a literal iced cream, more than a gelato in my option. It was very creamy and you can taste the freshness of the cream as the ingredient. However, an interring paring was the sugar cured egg yolks. This is the yellow sprinkle topping on top, and provided a very interesting combination of flavors. It had the sweetness of the sugar but the saltiness and distinct flavor of egg yolk. Together with the cream, it provided an excellent combination of sweetness and saltiness, and also a flakey like texture that melted in your mouth along with the gelato. An excellent dessert all around, and the most memorable dish of the night in my opinion. As a thank you gift with the check, we are served a very very rich dark chocolate truffle treat. All in all, the quality of the food was great, and the presentation was also eye catching. However, there are two main disappointments with my meal. The first is the feeling that this tasting menu could have done with perhaps just one more item. Throughout the entire meal I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed. While most dishes were great, there was nothing that wowed, and I left feeling that number of dishes didn’t make up for that feeling to make the dinner feel worth it. Also notable is the lackluster service to go along with the meal. From the wait staff, it felt as if there was no enthusiasm towards the dishes being served or for our guest experience. Each dish was accompanied by an exceedingly brief description, and that was it. What makes a Michelin Star restaurant memorable is the quality of food, presentation of dishes, selection of ingredients, and dinner service. While the first two were present, the latter two were not. I already touched on dinner service, but I wanted to make one final remark on ingredients. Most times, you justify the cost of a meal through the wide selection of unique ingredients. At other Michelin restaurants, I have been impressed by both the wide selection of ingredients, but also the creativity and uniqueness of said ingredients. However, in this case, all of the ingredients were similar and felt rehashed except one. The sugar cured egg yolk served with the dessert. This is the one ingredient that caught my attention and felt creative and innovating that made the dish stand out and become memorable. Overall, a good meal, but I couldn’t help but feeling mildly disappointed both throughout the meal and afterwords.

It was okay, our server was not very knowledgeable of the food and I was dissappointed with the quality of the chef's menu and the wine pairings were just not lining up for me. Interior: the pretty furniture was drowned out by the weird flashy saturated blue tones in the restaurant and our table was wobbly Some of the dishes weren't balanced very well, such as the squash pudding that started off great but you couldn't really finish off the dish because there was too much thick pudding in the end the dish to really keep enjoying it. I also wish they would sharpen their steak knives or replace them entierely because it was nearly impossible to eat some of their tougher meats (like the squab) with the knife provided. Overall just not as amazing as I expected, and the experience left me wondering if the michellan star even matters or was ever deserved.

Dinner time for the six of us. I love the decor of the old style interior which brings in the atmosphere of being in India. We ordered different dishes and shared them amongst us and we really enjoyed the food. Two of us requested one of the dishes to be very hot as we love and can handle the spice. The waiter said it could be too spicy hot and we said we'll take it. Our 'hot' dish wasn't that spicy hot at all and was mild in comparison to other Indian restaurant food we've tried. The waiter service was top notch and the staff was super friendly.

Unfortunately we just didn't like the food very much. The steak was chewy and not tender. I don't know how that's possible with good quality dry aged meat but it was. The fried potatoes were not yummy. The Panna Cotta was too sweet. The doughnuts were ok. The pasta was mediocre. Nothing really worked except the avocado salad and sourdough bread which were quite good. The service was very good. Parking was an absolute pain. I really wanted to like the restaurant but it was disappointing. Ugh!

[1 Michelin Star] Being a Californian, I think it will be a big miss not going to this restaurant. I love the vibe when entering with a lot of casual things, like the sea, the breeze, the casual shirts and jeans, and the casual vibes. All combined gives the California vibe. I ordered the seasonal tasting menu with wine pairing: 1. Crowded beach: grassy bar oyster, uni, limpets, scallop, abalone, mussles, blood clam Wine pairing: Champagne 2. Salmon tartare with pickled cherries, fingerlime vinaigrette Wine pairing: Silvander 3. Summer truffle risotto Wine pairing: Chardonnay 4. Dry aged flannery beef ribeye with black ketchup, crispy potato cake, charred onion Wine pairing: Malbec 5. Meringue gelato with sugar cured salted egg yolks, strauss family farm cream cheese Wine pairing: Madeira The food is exceptional! Everything is enough, not too little not too much. I was surprised with the beautiful crowded beach set with blood clam which my favorite ingredients that I rarely find in restaurants. Other seafoods were also super fresh! Other dishes are great too!! I was so full that I definitely come back for more dishes since I heard from my friend that duck breast is also a yummy item. All the wine pairings are more than 5 year old with great pairing tastes. I should have taken the photos of the wine because they’re so great but too was distracted with how good the food was. A phenomenal experience! The service is good in a good pace that leaves you enough time to enjoy the food yet always available to chat with you. There is a outdoor seating area that can fit more people. I like the blue theme in the restaurant which matches with the little table decoration of coral and sponge. This is so California! California vibes are also found in the blue theme to the paintings around the restaurant and the corals on the bar section. This place definitely worths 1 Michelin star rating.
