Market Restaurant and Bar came highly recommended to my husband and I and we could not be happier we dined there. The bartender Jay made a very well shaken martini just like my husband loves. The wine selection is great. The bar and lounge area are super inviting. The restaurant is sleek and elegant in design. The manager Umberto is the best. He brings hospitality to another level. We loved our server Lilah she was attentive and anticipated our every need. My husband started off with the Brentwood farm sweet corn soup and he loved every drop. I had the braised bacon and heirloom tomato salad then duck for my husband and tuna for me along with a braised short rib. For dessert we ordered both the chocolate and melon. We left the restaurant feeling full, satisfied and ready to return another time!

The food here is outstanding! The sushi is incredibly fresh. Flavor profiles were impressive with everything we got. Forewarning that the bar area is quite loud, due to acoustics. Book a table! You won’t be disappointed.

Hostess at the front desk were racists and super rude!!! A white blonde and long hair black eye with black hair. The blonde one Gave me a half printed menu that I cannot even read the name of the dishes. My white husband can get a normal one. Did I get apology and a new one? No!!!!!! The rest is good. I paid $380 for our two, upgraded the menu.

Super great date night! I took my wife to eat in the dining room (I was able to make reservations the day before) for dinner. My wife has recently had surgery and the staff were very accommodating to my request for a quiet corner in the restaurant, and our waiter was top notch being very friendly and helpful when it came to explaining the menu items. The meals they served were pretty small portions, but we were both full after all the courses were served. The food itself was great tasting. It is more pricey than I can typically afford, but as a treat to my wife it was well worth the near $200 for a fancier dining experience. I would definitely recommend going at least once.

Overall, it was a very good experience. The food was some of the best I've had in San Diego. We tried the three-course meal with wine pairing, and everything was fresh with incredible wine choices from around the world. The only downside was that despite mentioning my birthday in the reservation, there was no special acknowledgment like a candle or note with the food.

We came for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. They actually had an anniversary card signed by the staff waiting for us at our table when we arrived. The staff had impeccable service. They were so attentive and always made sure our drinks were topped off and we had what we needed. The food was also exceptional. The menu is constantly changing, and the chef pays such close attention to details and using local in season ingredients that you can absolutely taste the freshness when taking a bite. My favorite course was my starter which was a soup made with fresh sweet corn. I couldn't stop eating. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

It has been a very good experience. The food is one of the best foods that I have ever had in San Diego. We have tried the 3 course meal with wine pairing. Everything was fresh and the wine choices were incredible from all around the world. The only negative part that I can add is that the dinner was for my birthday. Even though there is a note added, it seems like nobody reads them. There was no special activity, such as a basic candle or a note that came with any of the food.

Amazing all around. My wife and i had an awesome meal/experience here. From before we arrived and had to call and let them know we were going to be late, through our meal attentively clearing plates once we finished, to the end as they spoke with us as we left it was such a great experience. Our server Grady took such pride in making sure we had an enjoyable experience. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and the pairings. Well worth the trip, I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the San Diego area.

I came here for my husband’s birthday dinner and was completely wowed. It was one of the best meals we have had in the past year. I am not a huge prix fixe menu person because there is a lot I do not/cannot eat but there was so much to choose from with each course. Every single course was delicious. The portions I thought were quite large. My highlight was actually the dessert. I never ever order dessert. I just don’t have a big sweet tooth but, The Rhubarb Sundae. I am still thinking about it.

The first time we tried this place earlier this yr we loved it. Second time on a recent revisit was a bit of a letdown in terms of timing, wine, and food. Nothing devastatingly bad, but for a high end restaurant, this night was a miss. First off, the initial bubbly intro was so late we sat for a few minutes wondering if the amuse bouche was supposed to be eaten before they came to pour. Granted I relayed to the waitress that I wasn’t a fan of bubblies so she was nice enough to pour me an alternate white. But while we were waiting, the amuse bouche arrived and not being certain if the bubble was supposed to pair with them as we had gotten the wine pairing, we went ahead with it only for the drinks to finally arrive right after. I can’t recall going to a restaurant and not getting served the welcome wine before any food started to arrive so we sat there a little awkward and confused. The appetizers were good to great with the hamachi being good and the flavor combos of the artichoke & burrata salad being excellent. The middle eastern influenced dressing on the artichoke salad topped with the prosciutto, olives, snow peas and fennel coupled on the side by the burrata on top of some fried noodles and mixed in a tomato compote had a lot going on but somehow it worked beautifully and was our favorite dish of the evening. For the entree course, we paid the up-charge for both the lobster and dry aged steak. The lobster was good, nothing wow, nothing fancy (hard to screw up lobster), nothing to write home about but no complaints. But their 45 day “dry aged” steak which had us very excited was anything but dry aged and doused with a sauce, probably to disguise the fact it wasn’t dry aged at all. An utter disappointment as we are huge fans of dry aged beef, esp for the $50 upcharge. The entree portions were decent to big which was fine but then to (not) top it off, pun intended, we paid for the wine pairing and the pours were so small throughout the meal we couldn’t even enjoy a sip with every bite of the dishes esp as my wife and I were sharing each dish and trying each other’s wine. For paying $69 per person for the wine pairing, we would have been better off getting a single bottle instead. To pour salt on the wounds, on a cool and rainy evening, where I was sitting was getting blasted with a steady flow of cold AC air. I usually don’t mind colder settings but had to keep my jacket on during the evening as did my wife who was getting hit peripherally with it as well. Regardless, as an former waiter myself and knowing how hard of a job it is, we still left a 20% gratuity but the restaurant adding on the 4.5% surcharge nonsense every restaurant feels justified throwing onto a bill lately was a second serving of salt on the wounds and for spending over $500 for the evening, our second, and most likely final, visit was a big letdown.

Would give this restaurant 6 stars if I could. One of the best meals we've had in years. It was like dining at a Michelin restaurant in a European city (which, as everyone who lives in San Diego knows, is quite hard to find in San Diego, even at the pricier restaurants with top reviews). We are big-time foodies, one of us with San Francisco roots, and have been lucky enough to dine in the major cities in the U.S. and abroad). Our standards are high, and very few restaurants in San Diego knock our socks off. This one did. I don't even know where to start. There were 4 of us and we're still talking about it the next day. We shared all our dishes, so we were able to try a total of 12 menu items (between the starters, entrees and dessert), and there were also 2 "amuse-bouche". Every single thing we put in our mouth was delicious. They clearly use the freshest and highest quality ingredients. Each dish was prepared with tremendous skill, passion and creativity. What we loved most is this chef obviously knows exactly what he is doing and lets the food speak for itself instead of trying too hard and covering up the natural flavors with too much pomp and circumstance. One of the things we've noticed with top restaurants (even with some of the Michelin star restaurants) is they try so hard to be "different" and "ultra-creative" that they opt for form over substance, and flavor suffers. Not here. It felt like the entire focus at this restaurant is on flavor and making each dish utterly delicious and memorable. What we experienced was one dish after another containing a delicate and creative mix of ingredients that allowed the natural flavors to compliment and showcase each other. The presentation of each plate was gorgeous too, without sacrificing taste. Another way it felt like a top European restaurant was the level of service. The large service staff worked seamlessly in tandem, anticipated our every need, were knowledgeable about the menu, made excellent recommendations, and without fail each and every one of them (even the people clearing our plates and refilling our glasses) were warm and friendly and very attentive. You can tell when the staff is invested in the restaurant and cares about your dining experience just as much as the chef. (Our server named Mike was friendly, engaging and highly professional. Every tip he gave us throughout the ordering was right on target, and he felt like an old friend by the time we finished the meal.) Other pluses: The restaurant is elegant and well-designed, with very comfortable chairs, thoughtful table placement, and well-planned acoustics such that noise didn't carry. Even the person at our table who has trouble hearing had no difficultly hearing everyone throughout the dinner -- and this was on a Friday night when the restaurant was packed. Also, the portions were large (so large that they kindly gave us to-go boxes and we're excited to have the leftovers for lunch today.) All of us give this restaurant our unreserved highest recommendation. It's worth every penny. A night and a meal we will never forget.

This is a high end restaurant, know that in advance. But it is worth every penny when you have something special to celebrate, or this fits your financial situations. The food was absolutely amazing in taste, complexity, and presentation. The service was the best of the best. And the setting... so many restaurants think noise makes them "seem" THE place to be, and thus think they are successful. Market goes to the polar opposite. I have never been in a restaurant that had such attention to sound proofing. Every table is in it's own world (excluding the bar area which has its own vibe). We could actually enjoy the company and conversation. Tables adjacent did the same but with no intrusion on each other. There have been many special occasions out at restaurants, but I expect this is to remain at the top of memories for a long time, celebrating my wife's birthday for a milestone year. If you want the finest of dining experiences, this is the restaurant to place at the top of your list.

Food was fantastic. One of the few high end places that didn't sabotage the menu with weird stuff, and also served fair sized portions... I wanted to try everything on the menu. Atmosphere is dark ... it left me wondering how dirty the upholstery is... at one point we noticed a spider crawling around us. One main strike against this place- they charge for water. $8 a bottle. Maybe I'm cheap and inexperienced, but I was surprised to see 2x of those on my bill.

Was food good? Yes. However our friends complained that it was a little over salty, I also tasted their food and they were right. For a restaurant at this level, the level of salt should not even questionable. Service was good but could have been better, for example no one asked whether it was a special day for us, there were some options that are not in the menu, but we did not know their pricing until we see the bill. When we got the bill, bill was not easy to understand. We only ordered 4 tasting menu and 3 wine glasses however the bill has all the items we ate, some had pricing but some showed “$0”. It is a pity that parking is valet only, however you can park in front of small shopping center which is one block away. Atmosphere was great.

I’ve been here multiple times. Carl Schroeder is an absolute master of his craft. In my opinion, take it or leave it, the reason why the Michelin Star has eluded him is the ambience and bar. The best way to describe the ambience is like you’re on a discount cruise liner. It feels like an outdated country club dining room. The cocktails at the bar are sub par to okay. But my goodness can this man cook! Every meal I’ve eaten has been better than the last. Regardless of the “issues” I stated above this continues to be the staple restaurant my wife and I patron for date night. If you’re looking for 3 star food at an affordable price you MUST try MARKET.

After trying to get outside my north county RSF-Dm zone I am glad to be back at The Market in Del Mar I just came off a bad experience having a terrible cold hot brunch at La Valencia The complete opposite at TM. From the moment we stepped inside, the vibe was perfect, with warm lighting and a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. I started off with a Paul Hobbs estate Chardonnay, and I must say, it was a delightful departure from my usual Paul Hobbs Cabernet. Let's talk about the food, shall we? The Hiramasa tartare was a perfect fusion of fresh and bold flavors, with Cara Cara oranges, avocado, purple daikon, wasabi tobiko, and nori crackers. The local grapefruit and avocado salad was another highlight, with medjool dates, purple haze goat cheese, honey crystals, and pistachios adding depth to every bite. And the beet-sugar snap pea salad was a feast for both the eyes and taste buds, with sprouts and shoots, El Valle cheese, sunflower seeds, and black pepper dressing. For the entrees, the miso-marinated sea bass was the standout dish, with sesame bok choy, spring squash, ramen noodles, red Thai curry, and peanuts complementing the melt-in-your-mouth fish. The big glory bay salmon was another winner, with sweet peas, fennel puree, preserved lemon relish, and citrus butter adding a delightful contrast to the perfectly cooked fish. And let's not forget about the dessert, my friends. The pistachio tres leches was a showstopper, with roasted strawberries, ruby streusel, crème fraiche, and lemon making for a heavenly ending to the meal. And the rhubarb sundae was a refreshing treat, with Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, crisp phyllo, and Cara Cara orange coming together in perfect harmony. Overall, The Market is a restaurant that truly delivers on every level. The attention to detail in both the food and the ambiance is evident in every dish, and the service is impeccable. This is a must-visit spot for anyone looking for a culinary adventure in Del Mar.

The last time I went to a restaurant with a tasting menu, I left feeling unsatisfied with the amount of food and the quality of food for the price we paid. Market Restaurant + Bar has restored my faith in tasting menus and definitely has me looking forward to the next time we come back! - PARKING - There's valet parking in the lot immediately in front of the restaurant. However, there is a side street if you go past the light that has some parking, and another lot past that, where other businesses were closed by the time we had come. Still, we avoided the limited time spaces just to be safe and parked in an unmarked spot. We walked over and got back to my car totally fine. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Staff was very friendly and pleasant throughout our time here, from the beginning as they opened the door for us, throughout the dinner service, and at the end once again guiding us out. Water was consistently refilled and they were very attentive. One of our party members was allergic to the amuse-bouche, so they made a separate one catered to his allergies which was very nice of them to do. They also refilled our bread basket without us saying anything, which may sound silly but I appreciated so much (their bread was so good!). Dimly-lit dining area, but not so dark where you can't see one another. Nicely spaced out tables so you don't feel cramped back to back with other parties. - FOOD - Truly every dish was amazing - we tried each others' as well and were not disappointed in any of them! Due to their daily changing menu, I won't go into super detail as they might not have the same items when you go, but some highlights: - Kanpachi Sashimi - Sesame-Shrimp Crusted Alaskan Halibut - Braised Beef Short Ribs - Roasted Strawberry Shortcake - OVERALL - An absolutely amazing experience that has me pinning Market Restaurant + Bar on the revisit list! Would 100% recommend coming here at least once - you'll probably want to come back after that!

We stop after the races at Del Mar and it was busy Friday night, service was outstanding and food was delicious.

Bravo, Bravo! Veramente buono! Tutto ottimo e ben cucinato, sapori ben assortiti.

Awesome diner. Everything was pretty much perfect from cocktails to dishes to wine. Service was outstanding, pacing perfect and room was quiet with tables far apart. Easy 5 stars. Not far from a Michelin star experience IMO.

This Fabulous place had the most unique and esthetically GORGEOUS food. The courses were laid out so Beautifully and the ingredients were unique and different, but worked so well. I got to be adventurous and try new things, and loved it! Spencer was our waiter and he was attentive and the entire staff and service was wonderful. Everything was executed perfectly. The only things they could improve is the front staff, the girls gave me dirty looks and we're not very kind. I was a hostess way back when, and it's your job to be warm kind and smile. They were fake and I even tried to smile more and compliment them, which I regret, because they were standoffish and it wasn't a pretty look. I wish they were kinder, it ruined the start of my experience dining here and when I left. They are the first people you see and last people you see and it ruins the good efforts the rest of the staff makes. They act like they didn't want to be there and looked bored and annoyed, maybe you should hire front of house staff that appreciate that job 😆🤦🏼♀️🤣

An experience you won't forget. The owner/chef puts his heart and soul into every plate, literally checking each one for perfection.

Quite possibly the best sushi in San Diego and quite possibly the worst and rudest staff in San Diego.

Highly recommended. Fun, well-executed plates, I’d say thoughtful, but that sounds stuffy. Sauces were especially delicious, flavorful, light and mercifully not over-salted. Wines selections were great too. Happy find.

The food was phenomenal, the restaurant is gorgeous, and the drinks were great. Only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review was our server. He was just okay. He was nice but at this pricepoint, with such a beautiful restaurant and amazing food, I expected more refinement from the serving staff, not the diner-style service we received. The service wasn't so bad that I won't be back. I would still encourage anyone reading this review to go because the food is absolutely worth it.

Literally my favorite restaurant in San Diego. The food is fantastic and it has never failed to delight me. The book blue cheese soufflé is superb. I highly recommend this restaurant.

A friend told us this place had amazing food. We started with a drink at the bar.The bartender was a blond gal, no smile, no hello, so my first impression was, here we go, another uptight place to over pay for food. However once we sat down we were blown away. Amazing food, flavor like no other, fantastic service, just a fun evening worth every dollar.

Some of the best meals I’ve ever had have been here at market! The chef and kitchen crew are beyond compare. Both the bar and restaurant seating are great depending upon what you are in the mood for- more casual, or a quieter table for more special occasions. Great variety in seasonal selections alongside go-to favorites. Great wine list, creative cocktails. I’ve traveled extensively and dined in wonderful restaurants. This one is among my favorite places.

Perfect evening forour anniversarycelebration as it seems to be the place for celebrations as two other couples were celebrating their anniversary. Service was attentive without being intrusive. It's a prix fixe menu with many interesting options. Not your run of the mill meat, potatoes, and salad place. We both enjoyed every thing we ordered. My only complaint is that they are literally out of town with nothing near and they have their own parking with only a few steps to the door and yet they force you to do their valet parking, really?!
