The teriyaki chicken with tempura is the best around! I would even say best in Oregon!

Delicious food and excellent service!

This restaurant is very charming and the staff are kind. The food is a poor example of Japanese cuisine, and extremely overpriced.

John and the entire team were a delight to speak with. Food was excellent. Dinner rush was real and they kept everything moving right along with a delicious wholesome experience for everyone. Could not have been more pleased to see this iconic restaurant still running strong as ever after nearly 40 years in business. Thanks Matsukaze!

A good place to eat if you are passing through or staying in Grants Pass. Japanese, Korean, and Hawaiian cuisine. Wait staff are friendly, kind, and understanding especially Sarah. Owner is a pleasure to chat with. Good spacing between the tables and booths, not cramped. Three Japanese style low tables too. Good prices on entrees and drinks especially beer and Sake. Kalbi ribs were nice. Meat was tender. Tempura was also good, lightly breaded, with a tasty sauce. My wife liked her Red Snapper, but I thought it needed more flavor. Pickled veggies and kimchi were good. Miso soup was little salty. Overall, a good value for the price with friendly service in a pleasant atmosphere.

The owner takes pride in his restaurant and customer. . Clean and relaxing environment. My take out tonight was a last minute decision on the way home instead of my usual phone in. It was ready so quick that the owner himself brought it to my truck since I told him I was gonna pop out to make a quick call.

Only open for dinner. Get there early. Line starts around 4pm, they open at 5. Also not a lot of seating. I'd say @25 tables. Parking is tight too. If the lot is full, you will be waiting for a table. The food is very good, we had teriyaki. Service is excellent, they are always filling water glasses up. Would definitely go again.

Absolutely shocked that they had a spot open ok valentine's day a couple days before it. It is a little bit of a shame that you do have to book most spots in advance. BUT, there's no extra cost and they're pretty quick with their amazing food. We also had desert, and it was bussin🔥

It's not Japanese at all!!! Food was mediocre. I had to send a plate back bc it was semi cold, like food out microwave that's still cold in the middle... I couldn't tell u who was a server or a food passer/outer... it's just Asian fusion diner... food portion to small for the price... I'll never go here again... ppl who like this place, it's only bc they have never had real Japanese food...

I have always heard good things about this restaurant. Now that I have actually eaten there, I understand why. Their food is soo good. I am not a fan of sushi, but the Philadelphia Rolls were very good, and the teriyaki beef dinner was superb! Our server was so nice, and so attentive to everyone in the room. My husband and I will definitely eat there again in the future!

Service was fantastic. I got their teriyaki beef and friend got teriyaki chicken, was not disappointed. They give you lots of sauce as well so that was heavily appreciated as most places don't. Hours are super weird so definitely check if they're open before going and go early because it fills up QUICK! highly recommended if visiting the area!

When I made my reseravation for an overnight stay in Grants Pass I had never stayed or stopped there. The room was a room like any other and looking out at the smoky horizon dashed any curiosity I might have had about exploring. Pizza? Mexican? Burger? It had been way way too long between sushi and a Sopporo- Matsukaze was one of the options the internet suggested, and google maps directed me easily. Matsukaze opens at 5. I arrived shortly after 5 to find the place already full and others seated waiting for a table. This was in my opinion - a good sign! Peering around I noticed there was two rooms and servers busy attending both. When I was seated I glanced through the menu and saw Philadelphia rolls; Salmon, Cucumber and of course cream cheese. Now, I happen to think that cream cheese in a roll is tantamount to a misdemeanor, at least a tort! So I asked if I could have the cream cheese replaced with avocado. We call that a San Francisco roll where I'm from. "Sure" was the reply from my server. I sipped my beer and awaited my Grants Pass, Matsukaze "San Francisco" rolls. When they arrived I had to admit they were quite attractive; colorful and exactly as I request (and remembered). I ceremoniously applied my wasabI to the soy and fumbled a bit with the "sticks" and dipped my first roll into the light brown sauce... What had always been a perfunctory move quickly became an experience. Now I have never, to my recollection, ever written a review about a meal. But after consuming those rolls ... well, I felt like should have had a cigarette (old joke) NEVER have I had anything close to the wonderful taste of those rolls. Ever. They were an event! And that is why I intentionally took so many words to get here on the page... Look at it like... well, culinary foreplay! The locals already know...You can see it in their faces, and nods. Bravo, Matsukaze! I will make it a point, should I be anywhere near Grants Pass in the future, to visit you again! Thank you! glenn raggio

I celebrated my birthday with two sets of friends on two different nights in here over the last ten days. Both times, the cuisine was outstanding. The tempura was light, crisp ( not oily), and hot. There was enough food left over so we were able to take the remainder home and refrigerate it for the next day. The waitstaff were there when you needed them, and they made you feel welcome. We stayed and visited after we finished dinner, and the wait staff told us to take our time. True hospitality!

Best restaurant in Grants Pass, hands down. Has been for as long as I can remember, this place holds so many happy memories for me and my family over the years. Superb sushi, and a variety of fresh and flavorful options everyone will enjoy. 💓💫✨

Our group of 4 stopped here for dinner after a long day of driving. It was a relaxing, delicious dinner that I'm so glad we came across. The waitress was very welcoming and helpful, the beef sukiyaki my friend ordered was amazing. All of the food we got was quite good! It was a quiet and wonderful rest with delicious food.

FOOD WAS WAAAAY OVERSALTED. SALAD MINUSCULE AND NOT INTERESTING AT ALL NOR LIKE ANY JAPANESE SALAD. I WOULD NEVER EVER GO BACK AND I SUGGEST YOU DON'T GO EITHER. THEY NEED TO CHANGE THE MENU AND THE CHEF. JUST AWFUL.

Working from out of town and stopped here because it was in my hotel dining list and the menu online looked great. This place is clean and nicely decorated and even has a couple tables where you can dine on the floor if you like. Everything was tasty and my dinner portion was huge! Leftovers for days! Your dinner comes with miso soup, a salad and green tea. The service is super fast and friendly as well and they even packed up my leftover food for me. I dined in on a Tuesday night and it wasn't busy at all. I would recommend dining here! Impressive. I don't get this where I am from.

Best restaurant in town hands down! Always delicious, whether enjoying a takeout order or dining on site. Terrific service, this place is very special 💫✨ Teriyaki is the best I’ve ever had, and amazing sushi and Mahi Mahi too! Can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.

Dinner was delicious as usual. However, they gave my wife chicken and not the pork tomkotsu she had ordered. No biggie, she would have settled for the chicken however, they made her wait another 20 minutes to remake it while sitting there with nothing to eat watching the rest of us eat our meals. Very disappointed in how they handled it. Whatever happened to the old days when they comped that one person's meal that they screwed up. We won't be back for a long time, if ever.

The staff is friendly, inviting, and gets orders taken quickly. There is often a wait, but I haven't had mine last more than 25 minutes. The food is delicious, the prices are reasonable and worth it. Their specific brand of teriyaki sauce is sold by the bottle and I bought two. The tempura ice cream is to die for and I have loved the crispy mahi-mahi since I was a little kid.

Recently moved to the area and trying out the restaurants in Grantspass. We really enjoyed our meal and the service was great. I had the Kalbi ribs which were good but the tempura was excellent. The batter was very light and airy and not a hint of greasy taste. We can't wait to go back and try some of the other items on the menu.

There are gems hidden up and down the I5 corridor. Matsukaze's restaurant is the crowning jewel of best kept secrets. Each bite, whether the spicy chicken or their succulent sukiyaki, nothing on their menu is less than incredible. If you're in Grants Pass for any reason, do yourself a favor and stop here to experience culinary perfection.

Too busy enjoying our meal to take pictures. Everything was very tasty. The miso soup in perticular was amazing. Katsu was crisp and juicy, with a great sauce.

We were seated quickly. Server was efficient and friendly. Our disappointment came with the teriyaki chicken. We had ordered it in the past and it was tender. This time one third of the chicken was too tough to cut with a fork. Past experience encourages me to give them another chance.

The food was fresh, hot and very good. The menu selection is limited. When we went, they were out of a few things. Service is average and the prices are reasonable.

Longtime Grants Pass fixture. Food is still awesome. Service is fast and friendly. Teriyaki sauce is killer as well as their katsu sauce.

I can not find something that I really enjoy off the menu

Usually my favorite restaurant, but wasn't tonight. Their food is always delicious, but tonight was disappointing. We had 4 orders of the same thing. Chicken teriyaki combination with no shrimp. Got shrimp on all of them and hardly any veggies!! 3 vegetable to be exact and 3 shrimp. And the portions of chicken as you can see is tiny compare to what we we would usually get. The lady even repeated the order back to us correctly but it still came wrong. Still support matsukazes, but I/we were looking forward to the normal sized meal with vegetable tempura we requested.

Very good dinner... a little slow overall but they were busy and always moving - doing the best they can during these strange times. Sit back and have a drink and you'll enjoy your meal.

Very nice experience, we had a group of 13. We drove from Eagle Point and Central Point to have a family dinner our original destination could not accommodate us, though they said they could when called. Matsukaze was great we were seated in banquet room with only a few minute wait it was 5pm on a Friday night . By the time we left they were full. Service was excellent drinks were kept full and the food, wow the chicken teriyaki was incredible and the serving size, well I took some home. Am not a fan of Matzo soup and that hasnt changed but folks in our group who like it said it was good. Tempura vegs and shrimp were great. We will be back!!!

Delicious!! We love the food at Matsukase's; from the first sip of tea, to the Tempura, to Chicken Katsu, and more. We love bringing our grandchildren to Matsukase's so they can experience dining at the floor table and practice using chopsticks.

I'm delighted that Matsukaze is surviving thru the pandemic. It's an absolute GP institution, family owned, and their teriyaki sauce is as close to perfect as anything I've ever experienced. Highly recommend supporting this classic spot especially at a time when restaurants need your business the most. The best!!

My family has loved this place since it opened. My personal favorites are the miso soup, chicken teriyaki, kalbi ribs, and shrimp and vegetable tempura. Maybe it's because I grew up eating these dishes here, but I haven't found a Japanese or Korean restaurant in the U.S. or abroad that I like as much as Matsukaze.

My family has been going here for decades and just absolutely love them! My grandfather took me every other week when I was a little girl and I have carried on the tradition with my family🥰 Thank you Matsukaze for being apart of my family for all these years!!!

Such an easy go to for a great take home dinner. Haven't had s complaint ever. Food is always excellent, portions are filling, prices are reasonable. California roll, and Gyoza appetizers are a must.

This place has some good food. I'm not huge of their rice but I'm also very very particular about the rice I eat.

Hidden Gem! This restaurant may not have an extensive menu but its worth visiting over & over. One of the best date night restaurants in grants pass, & pretty darn kid friendly also! While I'm not a fan of the tempura fried veggies or shrimp, you'll be pleasantly surprised by everything else!

Teriyaki chicken is awesome, and I love the tempura shrimp! Great people, amazing service, Good atmosphere for a date night or quiet night out with family to enjoy good conversation, always clean I highly recommend it, never disappointed! 5 stars well deserved.

As usual the best food in town.

Matsukase has been a staple in GP for as long as I can recall. Anyone who’s anyone knows that you always go for the teriyaki chicken, though the tempura bento boxes, (both vegetables and shrimp) are outstanding. The chicken Katsu is fantastic as well. I don’t know what they put in their salad dressing but both of the dressings are outstanding. I hate salad but when it comes to this salad, I can’t get enough of it!

The food was just okay. I was surprised that they didn't have a sushi menu. The service was great though!

Surprised with the quality of the Japanese food and interior of the restaurant. Far better than most of the Japanese restaurants in the SF Bay Area. As a Japanese, I can definitely recommend this place by its Authentic Japanese food. The taste of Sukiyaki was the same as what you can get in Japan.

I lived in GP from 97'-00'. It was my favorite spot to have dinner. THE BEST seafood and homemade tartar sauce . I would seriously contemplate visiting GP just for this food. Its a 12 hr drive, so thats saying alot. I'm so glad it's still going.
