Loved it. Great spot, staff were kind and attentive, the portions are generous, and the tea is probably the best I've had anywhere. BBQ was top notch as well.

It’s FANTASTIC BBQ, great sweet tea, and some of the best hushpuppies out there, but one glaring problem and a couple other smaller ones are more than worth taking back a star or two. The glaring problem is that this is the smallest BBQ sandwich you’ve ever seen. As in, smaller than the palm of your hand! I didn’t even know there was a company out there that made buns this small, so the folks at Morris BBQ must’ve specifically gone looking for “how to make the world’s smallest BBQ sandwich” on purpose. The portion size is honestly insulting. It’s so small it would still be insulting even if the price was cut in half. A slightly smaller issue is the tipping screen at the takeout window if you use a credit card. What part of handing a bag through a door could possibly entitle someone with the audacity to ask for a tip? The smallest issue is that the televisions detract from the vibe of the place - folks come here to eat BBQ at a shack on the side of the road that’s been around since the early 30s… and absolutely nothing about that says “television, please”. Overall it’s great BBQ and great people, but it’s simply not worth making an effort to come back unless the portion sizes triple or more at the VERY least. The way that it is now, a toddler with an Easy Bake Oven could make you a better meal - it doesn’t matter how good the food is or how nice the people that make it are if you’ve traveled all the way out here just to get fed 3 half-bites that you carry out yourself after being asked for a tip. …and for the record, I’m only a normal guy just over 6’ tall that weighs well under 200lbs. A fat person with an appetite would probably throw a fit if they saw the cupcake-size sandwiches at Morris.

What a great find we made today! Morris Barbeque just outside Hookerton in Greene County isn't a place you'll just drive past on your way somewhere else. Maybe a friend will tell you about it, or you'll hear of it and look it up online. Whichever way you get there on a Saturday -- the only day they are open -- you're in for a great barbeque experience. This three-generations family business cooks some of the best whole pork barbeque you will find, even in a barbeque restaurant-rich area like Eastern North Carolina. The chopped 'que is very clean, with a flavor that's distinctive yet understated. Paired with a mild slaw and simple, delicious hushpuppies, this is as authentic as it gets. An added highlight is the "bone plate," a healthy portion of the "cracklin" pieces from the outside of the hog, crispy and flavorful and excellent when dipped into Morris's sauce -- a clear vinegar and spices product that the restaurant proudly touts by saying, "if you can't see through it, it's ketchup." The restaurant also offers rib plates -- better call ahead by Wednesday, for the Saturday serving -- to place an order so the limited supply won't sell out (as it always does) before you arrive. Homemade desserts round out the menu with sweet notes to finish off the flavorful barbecue and slaw. Morris's is not to be missed if you are a fan of Eastern North Carolina style whole hog, chopped pork barbeque! Come to dine in (the space is small), take out, or eat outside at picnic tables under shelters. Prices are very affordable -- in fact, they're a notable value for the quality of food produced. Come prepared to relax, chat with the other folks ordering and waiting for their paper sacks full of Morris's best, and then leave with a satisfied appetite and an appreciation for the artistry of this place.

The slaw and hush puppies were also some of the best I have eaten. I was lucky enough to get the only Box of skins they had left for sale at 9:00 a.m. I would recommend you pre order the week before you come since they are only open on Saturday but it is worth the drive from anywhere to try this institution. Very friendly people at a off the beaten , open only on Saturday , place. My buddies and I heard of the place so we took off for Hookerton. RIBS , PULLED PORK , SLAW , HUSHPUPPIES, AND PINEAPPLE CAKE for BREAKFAST! The meat was tender , but greasy and had very little if no smoke taste . Found out they cook on gas pits with wood chips .. used to be all wood until probably the 70's The slaw is good , hushpuppies sweet and warm .. rib dinner came with the aforementioned items , include tea , dersert (homemade) and side order of skins and it pushed the total up to $22 per person, a tad on the high side . We watched them clean the bones , chop the que right in front of us .. sort of felt like being at Grandparents house during a family reunion.. QUE , SLAW , HUSHPUPPIES, DESERTS.. that's the menu ... looking for anything else you'll be disappointed.

We were on a BBQ tour of the area and this was our 3rd stop in early afternoon. We each got a plate and sat at a picnic table nearby to enjoy. Good BBQ. Not the best of the day, but the folks running the place are very friendly and talked to us for awhile when they found out were were from the Raleigh area and were on a tour for the day. I really liked the slaw here. Best of the day. The hush puppies were good too, but not the best. And the pork was good, but almost no smoke flavor. I'd come back, but it wasn't the best of the day.

When a friend, who grew up in the Kinston area, heard we were planning a trip there, he gave us this tip: go to Morris Barbeque on Saturday and have the ribs. Fortunately, I followed his advice after getting directions from Google Maps, which is about the only way to find this place. After 20 minutes of Farm Rd. this and Farm Rd. that, we drove to the top of a hill, and there below us was what looked to be an old country store with 20 or 30 cars parked around it and a line of people standing at a window. Bingo! Since I had called ahead with our order, we were able to go inside to pick it up. As we entered, the open kitchen to our right, was a beehive of activity, to our left, a few tables with some very focused eaters. Because we had just had a HUGE breakfast, the rest of my party wanted to take the food for later consumption. As I looked longingly at the large slices of layer cake in their plastic wrap lined up on the window sill, I had to agree, as much as I wanted to sit down and watch the great show. We crawled back into the car with our bags of Q and hush puppies and headed for the coast, the smells torturing us, teasing us. We finally arrived at our hotel, and they kindly allowed us to spread out our treasures in their empty dining room. The white boxes opened to reveal huge, meaty ribs, so perfectly cooked the meat barely clung to the bones... but wait! there's more....a pile of pulled pork underneath the ribs! The fresh coleslaw (some of the best I have ever eaten) was the perfect counterpoint to the rich protein and then there were the grease soaked bags of hush puppies and of course containers of sauce. We were in Q heaven!

I moved to Eastern NC a little over 4 years ago now, and when I got here the Eastern NC style barbeque (pulled pork in a vinegar based sauce) was completely new to me. Based off of some internet searching, my boyfriend and I did a tour over several months of all of the best Eastern NC style barbeque joints within a few hours driving distance. Morris' is - HANDS DOWN - the best!! A standard plate at Morris' includes pork, slaw, and hushpuppies. The Pork is out of this world - their sauce is the perfect blend of vinegar bite, bit of spice from the pepper flakes, and a depth of flavor that is savory and wonderful. The meat is moist, tender, and so flavorful - i can't get enough. More sauce is available if you like it coated more, and of course hot sauce is on the tables if you like more spice. Their slaw is divine - its simple, but so delicious and perfectly dressed with a slightly sweet note that, when combined on the fork with the pork, makes the perfect bite. The hushpuppies are house made and literally right out of the fryer every time - you can tell by their shape that the batter was spooned right into the frier, and they are the perfect consistency and sweetness. Eating in-house gets you unlimited slaw and hushpuppy refils as well - all for between 7-8 bucks depending on the plate size. We found in our tour of other Eastern NC barbeque restaurants that there was always something we didn't like about the other places - the meat being too sour, too dry, too vinegary, or the corn bread product being too dense, too bland, too salty, too dry, coming from a frozen package, or the slaw being too sour, too tart, not dressed enough, or dressed with plain vinegar instead of a mayo based sauce. Morris', however, has none of these problems - it truly is the most perfect plate. The location is a bit off the beaten path - but you can tell that it is a family operated location managed with lots of love. The staff and owners could not be nicer, and the service could not be better or warmer, and we've returned time after time bringing different friends, and are always welcomed back and recognized. Morris' is only open on Saturdays between 8 am and 2 pm - but is WELL WORTH the drive. Get some to-go on your way out and freeze it for a later meal. Its just so good! I can't recommend this place enough!
