Home cooked BbQ so it's not about the price remember that. But it is delicious!!

When I think of Virginia BBQ I think of Pierce’s down in Williamsburg. Smoked pulled pork, tangy bbq sauce with a little sweetness. For me, they set the standard. I have a new standard now and it’s Paulie’s. The key difference for me was the smoke. You can taste it, you could tell it had been cooked low and slow and had plenty of time to get a great Smokey base flavor that is not overpowered by the bbq sauce. The sandwich was also huge - plenty for one person or even to split. The sides were great, had the potato salad, wasn’t sweet at all and had a great potato flavor that wasn’t hidden by too much mayo, or other things. The baked beans were solid as well, the sauce was thick so beans weren’t swimming, and the beans were also firm, not mushy and overcooked. It’s a simple place, walk up to the window, order, get your food, leave (or sit at the picnic table). So for atmosphere, for what they want to be, they’re nailing it. Overall - super impressed and LOVE the smokers churning out smoke just off the road. Nice touch.

Paulie's Pig Out doesn't look like much but what lurks inside is a little piece of BBQ heaven. We unexpectedly found this place meandering our way from CT to FL on a road trip last year. It ended up being the best meal of the entire trip. It was so good that we purposely planned it as a stop on this year's trip and it did not disappoint! The ribs and chicken were both moist, juicy, and falling off the bone. The flavor was smoked deep into the meat and only got better dipped in a llitle bit of their sauce. All the sides we had were delicious. I especially liked the cucumber salad. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try.

Stopped in at 10:15am and realized they open at 11am, the gentleman came out and said, he could help us now, which was awesome! The pulled pork was incredible, some the best we’ve ever had. The customer service was great. There was a lady elderly lady having a medical issue while driving and the gentleman assisted her with such amazing care and respect. Great place with really good hearted people.

OMG. The ribs were astounding. I wasn't a huge fan of the BBQ sauce, but it was on the side and completely unnecessary. The flavor of the meat was remarkable on its own and they literally fell off the bone. 1/2 rack actually fed two of us, with a couple of bites for the dog, too. Wish we didn't live 12 hours away.

Just a little barbecue shack on the side of the highway. Went in expecting good food but was surprised when I got amazing food. Looking forward to coming back. Don’t sleep on the smoked chicken.

Everything was fantastic. Loved the pulled pork, green beans and Mac n cheese. Can’t wait to come back to the area.

There macaroni and cheese is special.

Delicious food! Awesome little place on the side of the road and had one of the best pulled pork sandwich meals ever! If you visit this area, this place is a must for good food!

Best BBQ ever but is a bit pricey for a plate.

My wife and I picked up lunch before heading to Swananoa and were both really impressed. The smoked chicken had deep flavor and the pulled pork was delicious. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the slaw but that was outweighed by everything else. The portions are MASSIVE. We should’ve just shared a single platter because we were throwing in the towel halfway through the meal. You’re definitely getting your money’s worth. Another thing worth noting is how fast they were cranking out the food. There was a decent line and we got ours within 5 minutes of ordering.

This BBQ restaurant was a pleasant surprise on our way from Pennsylvania to North Carolina! Pulled pork is delicious and owner recommended the gluten free corn rash which was outstanding! Highly recommend

Their barbecue is fabulous. I wish I had come back sooner. I hadn't been there since I first moved to Nellysford. It's kinda expensive but worth it.😋

Definitely a place to eat Worth going out of the way scenic route. Definitely use GPS it is a truck route and can be tricky if coming south.

#1 the BBQ is off the charts and the pudding is out of this world. I stop by all the time when I'm on the road. #2 Paulie is the man. A great, caring owner and very friendly character. Can't recommend this place enough!

Food was delicious, grandma’s recipe showed out! My brother and I were traveling through on the way to NYC and happen to run across this road side gem. If you’re in the area I highly recommend you stopping and getting some good food. As previous bbq restaurant owners ourselves in South Georgia we would rate it 10/10 all around. I had the 1/2 chicken with potato salad (best I’ve ever eat) and mac n cheese. My brother had pulled pork sandwich plate with baked beans and cole slaw.

We love this place & always try to stop here when we are visiting Shenandoah nearby! Bbq is amazing, both the pulled pork and ribs are great. We love the Mac & cheese and the banana pudding! Service is always friendly and quick. There is no in door dining but a couple of picnic benches if you don’t want to eat in your car!

In the area from Michigan for a scent detection competition with my dogs and passed this little place. I was ready for lunch so I stopped in. Wow. Seriously. Best pulled pork and banana pudding I think I've ever had. The service was great- the owner walked me through the menu and recommendations. My sides, potato salad and baked beans, were also excellent. It's a grab and go kind of place, the atmosphere is what you'd expect from a roadside spot. But wow, excellent food. I'll be thinking about that banana pudding for a long time. Highly recommend.

BEST BBQ EVER!!!! they have been an establishment for almost 15 years and it’s clear as to why. Their bbq is out of this world!!! They have two smokers outside that were cooking food as we arrived. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich platter which came with two sides. We devoured the pulled pork, coleslaw and macaroni salad. We also ordered a half rack of ribs which literally fell off the bone! The hot bbq sauce was so so good. We also ordered a side of deviled eggs which had a good kick of horseradish probably. If we are ever in Virginia again we are 100% coming back to Paulie’s Pig Out!!! Best BBQ we have ever had!

Amazing bbq like straight up. It melts in your mouth it's a beautiful smokiness and the Mac and cheese just yummmm. I highly recommend, it's a lovely hole in the wall place that has the best dang bbq I've ever tasted. They have their smokers out front if that tells you anything. Highly recommend

Love this little gem. The portions are great and is one of my favorite places to go on a Sunday afternoon for take-out. The bbq is great, the mac and cheese is great, and the coleslaw is great. If you are still hungry after getting a meal here I don't know what to tell you.

We went to the Blue Ridge Tunnel for a day trip from Richmond and almost just went somewhere in Charlottesville to eat afterwards, but I'm so glad I saw this place. After leaving the Carolinas, I've been severely disappointed by the barbecue offerings. This is the first place that's reminded me of home, and it's not even vinegar-based. The smoke flavor in the pulled porj cuts through the tastefully applied sauce they use and it's so good, rivals some of the best I've had anywhere. The mac and cheese will warm your heart (or maybe clog it, but it's worth it!). We also tried the green beans and coleslaw and can happily recommend all of it. For dessert, the banana pudding and apple pie were both perfect endings to a perfect meal. While you're in the area check out the Rockfish Gap Country Store and Brewing Tree, both are excellent. Perfect day and it makes me want to move out of the city just to be closer to this barbeque!

I wish I had pictures to share, but you can view the many others posted on here and get the point. Awesome taste and large portions. This is a great road side place to get a big barbecue meal while doing a trip to the mountains.

Every time I'm in the area I make it a point stop by Paulie's Pig Out the food is great the portions will not leave you wanting more, but the taste will! The best barbecue on the East Coast hands down. Oct 2023: Second visit this year and the food is just as good as my first visit 10 years ago. Paulie had his 14th anniversary this year since opening Paulie's Pig Out. Make sure you stop by on your way through or if you are touring one of the wineries in the area.

I'm so glad my family ran across this place while staying nearby at an air bnb. The ribs were the best we have had, and I have a BBQ rib addict in the family who was blown away by these ribs. The sides were just as good. I wasn't super impressed with the beans but the coleslaw, potato salad and mac & cheese were honestly the best I've had. Wish we lived closer!

The service was great and the portions large. However, I am not a fan of barbecue sauce mixed in with my pulled pork. There was so much sauce that it masked the natural barbecue flavor. Noticed they use Kingsford charcoal. The potato salad was too sweet and the macaroni salad was bland. My first time there, so I was very hopeful. Prices are a bit high. I guess they justify it by the amount of food you get. I was very underwhelmed, but gave two stars based on the very friendly service. I thought I found a spot! I did eat the potato salad after adding mayonnaise to try to cut the sweetness. Took a bite of the sandwich and macaroni salad, but threw those away. Just not to my liking. BTW $19.19 for the barbecue platter. Came with the pulled pork sandwich and two sides.

Food was great, overall maybe a tiny bit more seasoning but still great all around! Weird hours. Definitely wish they were open during the full week but great no the less.

Little roadside joint in the country. Friendly service, all homemade food. The 1/2 chicken is delicious, moist, and tender. They have a thick, odd BBQ sauce, but it's not bad. The portions for the sides were HUGE! The baked beans were good and hearty, the potato salad was good, the mac and cheese was tasty, and the macaroni salad was OK. We also had a side of deviled eggs which were also ok. Overall, a lot of good food for a very fair price. Definitely worth a stop on the way to the mountains.

On the expensive side but it's worth it. The food is fantastic (the ribs); if you don't like the tomato-based pulled pork then don't get it (I like the vinegar-based one).

The pork sandwich is very generous with the meat. The sides are especially good...I had the mac and cheese and the cole slaw. Both are beyond delicious!! I am saving the chicken and the ribs for later. A must if you are in the area Thursday - Sunday!!!

Paulie's Pig Out is a great place to get some BBQ. Good flavor across the board. We got a pulled pork plate with slaw and mac-n-cheese. Delicious. Quality is great. Quantity for price is great. It's a old time roadside BBQ joint. The only downside is not being able to go inside anymore. It's definitely a place you should try! Just be careful pulling back out onto the road. Cars move pretty quick through there.

This place was voted the best barbecue place in Virginia, so we had to try it out. The food and the service were fantastic. The owners need to expand the store to provide inside seating and a larger bathroom.

Very cool! Little side of the road barbecue joint. Has outside picnic table. No indoor seating. They smoke the pork and chicken fresh daily. We got the pulled pork and it melts in your mouth. Great flavor.

Stopped along the highway for a genuine BBQ sandwich. The portion size was HUGE. I'm not going to say I haven't had better but it was still good. I would definitely stop again and recommend anyone to stop by when passing through.

Stopped on my way home from HotRod power tour! And I remembered the looking out at the top of the mountain so I took my food up the hill and ate it there and let's just say the pictures don't do the food or the view justice! Both were amazing and man what a combo.

Excellent pork BBQ. It's tomato style & I've come to prefer the vinegar style but it's still very good. Large portions. Baked beans were great too. Service was quick. Now, this is not a fancy place. You need to be ok with eating on picnic tables or taking your food to go. They do have a bathroom but it's very tiny. None of these things bothers me but worth noting if you are the fancier type.

Mainstay for decades. I've stopped at Paulie's almost every time I pass, since 2010. I grew up in Texas and smoke my own meats. Paulie's is top tier BBQ. Also the kindest people working here.

Hands down, "The Best" ribs I've ever eaten.

We had high hopes for the delicious pulled pork from this place and we completely satisified. We were also all blown away by the smoked chicken. The potato salad was also impressively tasty. With 16 people to feed, we ordered 5 lbs or pulled pork, 4 half chickens and 2 lbs of potato salad. There were leftovers, but not enough for everyone. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the melee. I was thrilled with how easy it was to order and pick up our dinner, which was perfectly prepared and ready when we were.

Obsessed with this place. A perfect little bbq spot in a beautiful location! The food was insanely good and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. The outdoor space is peaceful and perfect since we had our dog with us. They were very knowledgeable about any allergens, too. HIGHLY recommend the green beans and potatoes and pulled pork.

Best bbq, smoked chicken and ribs of anywhere, ever, period. The sides are also fresh and amazing. It's not a dine-in restaurant. It's take out. Get the cheer wine bbq sauce with your order. It's so delicious. Paulie is very friendly.

Paulie’s is a local legend, but Paulie himself is an absolute gem. I’ve been to the restaurant many times and it is always a treat. They’re the best BBQ in the state in my experience. But Paulie did something that I never expected. A british youtuber I watch ran into him in Waynesboro and this man sold him a car, helped him with the registration, and took care of everything when they desperately needed help. Went out of his way to help a total stranger. Paulie is a beautiful representation of our community. Eat this guy’s food because it’s awesome, but more importantly, support his business because he’s a wonderful person who deserves it.
