The good was just ok. Nothing really wrong with it, just wasn't as good as I was expecting from as an expensive a place as it was. Waitress had to ask the chef to tell us what a menu item was. Rather pricey.

This is the best food I had during my short visit in Bloomington! Ordered "Combination special" with Lamb kebab ($23.95) that comes with quabili (Afghanistan's national dish with core ingredients of steamed rice mixed with caramelized carrots and raisins as well as marinated lamb meat, according to internet), manto (dumplings typically consist of a spiced meat mixture) and sambosa. It also came with a soup or salad; I went with red lentil soup. The bread and grilled eggplants are free. Everything was great! I was really sad about various restaurants in the area that had let me disappointed in the past few days; I am so glad that I made the right decision, with stomach filled great food, cook and season just right, for the last night in town. I would totally came back to visit and come to this place again. This is officially my favorite restaurant in Bloomington!

Absolutely incredible. Up in the Detroit area, we have Middle Eastern joins all over. This was similar but so incredibly different! All the food was so fresh and flavorful. Service was top notch.

Enjoyed an early evening meal. Initial order prepared wrong, so had an extra long wait for one of our two meals ordered. We allowed 90 minutes for the experience (had a business meeting to attend), but it took closer to two hours to complete the experience. Food was tasty.

I live in Indy but I’ll drive to Bloomington just for this. So good, extremely well priced, clean and good atmosphere. The Combination plate is great, taste it all!

We have dined here, with delight, for many years. Tonight's service was atrocious. Someone named Eve was our server and was obviously not pleased to be there or taking care of anyone. Bottle of wine was plopped on the table, unopened, until we finally opened it ourselves and served ourselves. We had to ask about drinks for our underage guests, and yes, they could provide something. Each course came VERY quickly - as if to say "Hurry up so we can get you out of here," and they weren't busy at all. When dessert was delivered, our soup/salad/dinner dishes were all on the table, and we basically shoved them at her to get them out of the way. We can't imagine what could have happened to this lovely restaurant we have enjoyed for so long! Needless to say, $221 later, we won't return to be that mistreated. And yes, we are sad. The food is still good, so that isn't the problem.

We dined here on a Wednesday night, and while we were seated quickly, it took some time for our server to come and take our drink order. This was our second time dining here, but we had a new friend join us with allergies, and our server was able to helpfully answer any questions he had. The bread and eggplant as an appetizer was brought to our table as a 'free' addition. The entrees come with either salad or soup, and I chose the soup and it was a great choice. I ordered the pasta combination, which came with two types of dumplings. I asked our server if I could get some with chicken, (which was an alteration of the item from the menu) and he made it happen. The dish as a whole was fantastic; another great choice. We'll be back next time we're in town.

Our favorite place to eat in Bloomington, we are out of towners, if I were local we would be here once a week! Chicken kebab dinner with a babaganoush appetizer is an absolute treat!

This place never disappoints! I left Bloomington in Aug 2014, only to return in May 2024 to find out that it's still standing. The inside has had a nice face-lift while the food has remained amazingly delicious!!

Came in at 8:25. They made me wait for 10min without the host coming until it was around 8:35. The host came and said the kitchen closes at 8:30 while the place was full of people. Bad service.

Came in with great expectations of Afghan food but disappointed . I ate lunch buffet. There were 8 items. Except for a potato onion dish, every other dish was average to below average to taste. The ambience is lovely and the staff is courteous and professional. But the food quality isn't worth the praise.

SO DELICIOUS!!! We came here never having eaten Afghani food before, and it's probably going to become our regular date night restaurant from now on. Every single dish was amazing, the staff was polite and friendly, and our drinks stayed full. The atmosphere is also wonderful, and we really loved their nod to the Hanging Gardens. If you're looking for a new and unique place to eat in Bloomington, this is it! And in case management reads this, our waiter was Peter, and he was wonderful.

Great staff and experience! The food was very good- tender meat and good flavor in the sauces. The dinner portions are on the more expensive side (18-25$) but they come with bread and salad/soup, as well as good quality meat. There are a variety of vegetarian options available! The lunch buffet is also good and more affordable.

My favorite restaurant in Bloomington! They have newly remodeled and renovated their waiting and dining area and it looks amazing! I enjoy dining in the remodeled window booth with pillow seats. Great pairing of lamb (med. rare) & chicken kabobs with the house Malbec wine. My personal favorites and veggie recommendations are baked Sabzi (spinach) and Shalgham (turnip), which come with the kabobs. Tiramisu is made fresh in house and a fantastic finisher (large enough to share with 2-4 people, but they'll all want their own)! Hands down, one of Bloomington's finest restaurants - family owned and operated with nearly 30 years of tradition and consistency from the kitchen. Specializing in cuisine from Afghanistan, with worthwhile portions presented, and great customer service. Calling and making reservations is highly recommended, and they remember repeat customers.

Afghan restaurant in downtown Bloomington near the UI campus. It's actually at the father end of downtown from the main campus gates. We had dinner here during the admitted student day and were quite impressed. The decor and service were fantastic - all the servers were charming, attentive, responsive and energetic (the pace with which they went to and fro!). The food was good but not great in my opinion. The kitchen does do a good job with presentation but I think it lacks a little in flavor. I Loved that they offered grilled eggplant and bread as their free starters. Their servings were quite generous so be careful how much food you want. We ordered a salad, samosas, and two entrees amongst three of us and we had plenty of leftovers! Last, we got the tiramisu and this was definitely the winner! Hard to explain how an Afghan restaurant in Bloomington has such amazing tiramisu, but they do - and you've gotta try it! It comes in a special desert glass and it's just delicious - perfect way to end your meal! Cost was slightly on the higher end, but not unreasonable given the service and quality. Our kid committed to IU, so it's highly likely that we'll be coming back to Samira! (Btw, their wall mural of the Afghan girl from National Geographic on their back wall is stunning - beautiful piece of art!!). Enjoy!!

Too bad that I took this long to come to Samira. This is just the kind of food I love. The meats are cooked to perfection. Breads are baked to be as fluffy as anyone would love and the the rices are seasoned for an experience. Really enjoyed my visit here and the service was great. Would be back again and again!

Samira is one of my favorite restaurants because I love eggplant, and their eggplant dishes are so flavorful! Today was my birthday, and my husband treated me. I ordered the Babaganoush appetizer, which was very good. My favorite thing on their menu is the Badenjan. Unfortunately, this was also the day of the eclipse, and they had a limited menu. Badenjan was only offered as part of the vegetarian special, which was 1/3 Badenjan, 1/3 Spinach, and 1/3 Dal. The Badenjan was great, the Spinach was OK, and I tasted the Dal, but didn't like it. My husband ordered the Lamb kebab, which comes on a large (20"?) skewer. A generous portion cooked to perfection, medium rare, as per our waitress' recommendation. Our waitress was Allison, and she was excellent. I think the last time I ate at Samira, they had cloth napkins, which lends to the upscale ambiance, but today, the napkins were paper. So, I was a little disappointed in the limited menu and the paper napkins. Overall, a 4/5.

This used to be a bright white place, but they've darkened it up a bit and made it super cozy. The food tastes just as amazing as it always has, yet for some reason, the changed ambiance makes it taste better. I particularly loved their beef kabob and the Spanish wine they had on the menu. Also, the baklava... Oh hell yeah.

Interestingly, I lived in Bloomington for 7.5 years but have only ate at this establishment 3 or 4 times. Best Afghan food I've ever had but I've only tried it elsewhere in D.C.

I was absolutely blown away by the quality of the food at this Afghani restaurant. Everything seemed freshly prepared, delicately seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The Lentil soup had a lovely tang to it - a bit more spicy than most versions. I had the Manta (dumplings filled with pork), exquisitely prepare and presented. Portions here are very generous. This is one of the finest examples of Afghani cuisine that I have experienced, and I enthusiastically recommend it.

Very good food with lots of vegetarian options. Vegan options seemed relatively few, but dishes can be made vegan. Great service. For a college town it's slightly upscale but worthwhile.

Samira is such a unique restaurant to visit. The bread and eggplant starter come to the table free of charge (I can't think of any other restaurant in town that is that generous anymore). The salmon dishes are great, and I've had the vegetarian dumplings as well. Dinner also comes with soup, a delicious lentil.

Food was amazing and the atmosphere and service was great! We ordered the Lamb Kebab and Roasted Salmon - the lamb kebab was cooked to our preference, and the roasted salmon was cooked really well - super tender and not dry at all! Overall, food was really great!

If you think you don’t like eggplant think again!!! This place will have you rethinking your relationship with veggies in the best way. Such beautiful use of olive oil in every dish. I went to Samira for lunch and had their buffet. There was a nice variety including meat, veggies, and two choices of rice. The food was good, though all of it was too salty for me. And I like salt. Without asking, they put bread and dessert on our table, which we did not eat, as both of us are gluten-free.

Always love to go here for dinner. It is our favorite restaurant. The food is incredible. We’ve done the kebabs for years but have now started ordering the Samarok Lawang with chicken. OMG, it is so good! The hummus is the best ever and so is the sautéed eggplant and lentil soup. Don’t miss this place!

Had family dinner there. We’re seated right away. Service is prompt and friendly. Good food and good portion. To top it off, I think their price is very reasonable. And over the last 10 years, I think their quality is very consistent (both food and service).

My wife and I live in another State, but one of our family members recently located in Indianapolis. While visiting Ind, we discovered Samera’s Restaurant in Bloomington with seemingly good reviews. We made dinner reservations for the three of us on August 19, 2023. We were greeted by the friendly hosts and seated. Understandably, they were busy on a Friday night, and the service was a bit slow, nonetheless tolerable. We appreciated the complimentary thinly sliced eggplant with some bread. I didn’t find it to be very special – the eggplant slices were cold, and so was the bread, and I didn’t see a typical yogurt that accompanies the dish. My family members’ favorite Afghan dish is Manto, and Aushak. That was our main motivation to drive 120 miles round trip. For the three of us, we ordered four main dishes, among other things: They included: Manto, Aushak, Lamb kabab, and Quabili Pallao. While all the above were well prepared, and I must say we had enough to eat and even took some home with us. I was a bit taken by the fact that Manto only had a limited number of rather small pieces of dumplings but complimented the dish with plenty of rice. I could say the same thing about Ausha, and the Kabab. The most important missing things were fresh bread (they told us they had run out and are making more) and yogurt. I bet they may have run out of yogurt, too, but they didn’t say it. I have been to some middle eastern restaurants in the Detroit area where they serve fresh over baked bread during lunch and dinner hours, and it is one of the best. A good Afghan meal usually accompanies freshly baked bread. This was our first introduction to experience Samer’s Restaurant, and we may, unluckily, have not been there on one of their best days. I wouldn’t mind going there again if I were in the Bloomington area. Waiting for a positive experience before I drive 120 miles to go there.

Had a great meal here while I was traveling to Bloomington. I accidentally left my credit card there and since I am from out-of-town, I had to call and ask if they could mail it to me, and they were kind enough to take care of that for me. Amazing service and great place - highly recommend!

The food was amazing especially the sabzi pallo…the flavors of the rice with the herbs and raisins was yummy. The wine selection was also very good. It was a beautiful dinner until the end when there was a problem with paying by credit card. Apparently they do not accept credit card payments so we ended up paying in cash.

Made a reservation for graduation and had to cancel when they called to confirm on May 1st. Was told I “should’ve called them”, even though they stated they would contact me to confirm, and was told that what I did “just wasn’t right” and was promptly hung up on. I had a work event that needed catering, so I chose a few local restaurants, including Samira. I probably would've been better off only using Samira, their food was our biggest hit!! Samira is one of my top 3 restaurants in Bloomington. The food is always great and the atmosphere is very nice. They provide bread with some spicy roasted eggplant, both are delicious. I also enjoy the hummus appetizer, it goes well with the bread. Their Sambok appetizer was also quite good. Mushrooms, peppers, and onions in a savory sauce! My favorite entree to get is the Quabilli Pallao with Lamb. It is lamb cooked in a tomatoey sauce served over rice and topped with shaved carrots and raisins. The flavors are so Unique, unlike anything I have had before. The lamb combination kebab is also excellent because it comes with lamb, rice, a Samosa, and Momo (dumplings). You can also get Momo as an entree but I view it More as a side or an appetizer for the table. Each entree also comes with lentil soup or a salad. I have only had the soup and it is very satisfying. The walls are darker and feature mirrors throughout to make the restaurant feel more like a fine dining experience. No indication of being closed based off website and Google stating they are open. We walked up and saw they are closed for renovations. Please update your hours on sites.
