This was recommended by a neighbor. Middletown, DE doesn’t jump to mind when you think about sushi. It does now. Beautiful presentation of sashimi and sushi. Bright, tasty flavors in a traditional setting. Just get over the fact that it is in a strip mall between Mathnasium and Wayback Burgers. It’s that good.

We have been dining at Sushi Yama for years. Their consistently FRESH & delicious sushi is what keeps us going back. We have tried many restaurants in Delaware & Sushi Yama is at the top of our list.

While the food quality is very good, I have been disappointed at times. Last weekend prompted me to write this review. We were there with family and kids. Kids love tempura. I do not eat raw fish, Uni exception, and I am vegetarian. I ordered a roll with Asian veggies and California roll because my husband has gotten many times when we go alone and it always looks so good. I had trouble finding the crab stick-could not be seen looking at roll???? Minimal avocado? Disappointing. While here I will mention last season I ordered Uni sashimi and had two pieces, very good serving. Next time I ordered 2 servings which is 4 pieces and it looked like the same amount of Uni spread into four cucumber pieces. In that case I may as well just order one serving. I have tried regular crabment roll and did not like, crabmeat had odd flavor -I get without Old Bay-don't like that flavor, it's mostly salt and very un Asian.

Had the rock shrimp and the Mexican rolls. Delicious!

Got three party trays for take out. Everything was delicious and fresh.

Lost a star due to the taste of the spring rolls Not the best but I wouldn't let my personal opinion negate you from trying an outstanding place!

Having been a chef for two decades, I know a thing or two about food and the sushi, service and quality are only rivaled by two or three places... places 2 or 3 hours in either direction

Always the best Suish in Middletown or Delaware for that matter. Clean restaurant, friendly staff, very quick cooks, and very nice presentation. Top notch Restaurant. I recommend all people in the area that like sushi or even just want to try it, to come to Sushi Yama, the only Sushi place or restaurant in general in Middletown that is worth the money and the travel if your from out of town like me.

Sushi was okay, miso soup was basically water, need to add more miso to the soup, too light and bland ruins the quality of the whole meal

It was the first time we dined here today June 4 th 2024 on our son’s 18th birthday. The food , ambiance and specially the hospitality are superb. They even surprised him with a fried ice creme dessert and sang him a birthday song ❤️🎉🎉🎉 I cannot thank the team enough 🙏🙏🙏Definitely coming back again. We didn't have reservations after my daughter's recital but we were starving and she really wanted sushi. So we called and they easily and happily accommodated our large group of 8. When we arrived everyone greeted us with a smile and told us a table would be ready in about 5 minutes. It was less than that. 👍 We sat in a private booth room so it was really nice to be able to have that privacy to celebrate our family time and my daughter's recital. The staff and our server is always friendly (we've been here more than once) and food it's always so beautifully presented. Highly recommend!

My boyfriend and I had come here sort of on a whim since we were in the area. The service was great and the sushi was delicious. The lady who took our order was very helpful with recommendations from the menu and explaining some of the menu items. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back again!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Sushi Yama. We started by sharing the rock shrimp tempura, a long t8me favorite. We appreciated the opportunity to review the extensive roll menu and choose our favorites by marking them on the provided paper. I would like to see the roll menu look a little nicer and cleaner. It appears worn and haggard. The food was served quickly and was visually beautiful. All rolls tasted great. The roll with the mango did not hold together, though, making it difficult to dip. The service was spot on. The dining room was not crowded on a Monday night and we were seated comfortably at a booth. Looking forward to our next visit!

Excellent sushi, very good soba noodles and attentive service with a nice atmosphere. Sushi at the bar is cool. Have had take out on numerous occasions and always correct and packaged well.

When I come to visit family it is MANDATORY that I come here. This place never disappoints.

She was super sweet and attentive and super awesome with our son who is on the spectrum. I have always loved the quality of this place and I go there constantly. We could have eaten cheaper but we got 5 rolls, 2 soups, and a salad plus drinks. Perfect date night spot, private party rooms. It might literally be my favorite restaurant period. Edit: last time we went we got a sushi boat for the first Time The Love boat for two it was so amazing!!!!! I'm so glad we finally did this. Plus a icecream fried (red bean of course) and it was a perfect night for my son's birthday. I love it there so much, I hope you do too.

Delicious, Fresh, Quick Take-Out Sushi I ordered nigiri for take-out on a cold, rainy day. The online ordering process was simple and easy. My order was ready at the exact time given, and I gave my name and paid at the window. I went to get an oil change at Valvoline down the road, and since everybody and their mother happened to be at Valvoline at 12:27pm on a Friday and it was apparent I’d be parked in line for an hour, I opened the container of sushi in the car. The sushi looked bright, colorful, and beautiful. 8 tightly packed glistening nigiri pieces and four overflowing Tabigo and Maguro rolls — complete with abundant ginger and wasabi on the side — the fresh spicy aroma of which, wafted into my face. To my surprise, it appeared as though I was given an extra two pieces of salmon nigiri — I’m not sure if this was a mistake, or they just wanted to pack the box full. Either way, I got some extra pieces of sushi for free. :) Thank you Sushi Yama. Now I know where to get cheap, quick, delicious, quality fresh sushi in Middletown.

Got my Togo order wrong, didn’t give me the sauces I paid for that were an extra cost. Called to talk with them and got ignored and they told me I ordered something different

Horrible experience with their takeout. I ordered lemongrass soup. I asked if they were shrimp included. I was told yes and I wanted to order extra shrimp. I was very disappointed to arrive home and find a total of 4 shrimp in my soup. I even paid an additional 695 for six shrimp, so I never received the six I paid for. When I called the store, I was told by the chef I got all the shrimp I pay, for I will not be returning not worth my time, money or effort. The flavor was mediocre at best. I’ve had bit better lemongrass soup. Maybe their sushi is better, but I will not return.

Our first time at Sushi Yama definitely didn't disappoint! It's a comfortable restaurant and although it's clear they do a lot of DoorDash business (understandably, the food is delicious) this doesn't have any impact on the atmosphere when dining in. Our hostess and server were so friendly. Server answered all of our questions and the timing on everything we ordered was paced perfectly. They have about 100 different special rolls to choose from, so we are looking forward to coming back soon for more ☺️

This is a nice local place for sushi. The people are friendly and the atmosphere is great. There are other options for food you can enjoy, but sushi is in their name and they make sure you know why.

After carefully reviewing their website, which looked quite fancy, I decided to make a reservation at the restaurant. However, my experience upon entering was disappointing. The service was lacking, with servers constantly rushing even though the restaurant wasn't busy at the time. We ordered the chef's special sushi, but it failed to meet our expectations. Despite reading positive reviews about the place, I personally found the food to be subpar. The attempt at decoration with fake plants glued to the plates for serving sushi didn't enhance my dining experience either.

Located in a strip mall with plenty of parking. Their plates are all about the presentations especially if you order multiple items. Attendance midweek at dinner time can be busy. The specialty roll menu has an an abundance of choices.

This location is fantastic for take out or dine in. The staff here are courteous, and the sushi is delicious! Visited twice and both times were an exceptional experience. In terms of the sushi, the Sunrise Roll (pictured) and S on the Beach are my favorites!

My wife and I had lunch boxes A and B. Plenty of food. Mostly pretty bland. Salad was so cold it had ice crystals in it. I would not recommend these selections. Quick and courteous service. Not crowded on a Tuesday at 1215.

Great service! The server was pretty timely, and we got our food within 15 minutes of ordering during the rush. Sushi was good! Tempura ice cream was also great!

My wife and I love sushi. She loves sushi more than I do, and I believe we have been to around 100 sushi restaurants between the two of us. We found this restaurant accidentally and gave it a try. Where most sushi restaurants do the same song and dance, this place does the little things to make customers feel special. The restaurant is super clean, the decorations are simple but inviting, the plates are ornate upon arrival, and the service was quick. And yes, even the food was deliciously different. My ginger salad dressing was homemade and tasted better than most. The sushi rolls were so fresh and seemed to have an extra hearty flavor. Even the soy sauce tasted differently, but in a good way. When the check came we were surprised with little packets of Japanese gum and I was happy to see the check. The prices here are very reasonable compared to most sushi places that overcharge. This restaurant is simple and unassuming, but you will know the owners care when you taste their food and experience a relaxing dine-in. We will definitely return and I am recommending this place to anyone who enjoys Sushi/Japanese.

With limited sushi options in Delaware, I decided to give this place a try. I ordered two party trays for a little family gathering. Upon bringing the two party trays home, I immediately noticed the small size of the individual pieces. When we all started digging in, we all agreed that the rice had a funny texture. The rice was borderline stale and hard. The unagi in the dragon roll was extremely chewy as well. I know unagi has a slight chew to it, but this required significant jaw power. On a side note, I called prior to Thanksgiving to double check their hours on Black Friday, as that was when I was planning on ordering the platter. The individual who picked up the phone was extremely rude when I simply asked for a confirmation of the hours for Black Friday. Safe to say I won't be ordering from here anymore.

Been going to eat here for years. Always a perfect meal prepared by experts at their craft. If they have it available, try the orange clam sashimi.

I really like to get take out here. We got 5 sushi rolls and it was $60.00 for 2 little take out containers and any more it is hit and miss. This time it had everything but the avacado was brown and missing flavor when you took it out of the roll. I guess I'll make my own without fake crabmeat for 60.00.

I went there the other day and got some dumplings that where really good.

Still good food, but some of its elegance (such as a warm towel) have gone by the wayside since our last visit. Server was pleasant and brought our food in an unhurried manner.

The rolls I got fell apart I couldn’t eat any of it because the entire roll was in a million pieces. Will never be buying from here again.

Shrimp Tempura dinner was excellent. Very light with extra large Shrimp and vegetables. Large serving. Very active take out service. Had several common Sushi rolls that were good but want to try some of the house special rolls on next trip. Want to also try take out and sitting at sushi bar watching the making of the rolls. Will be back.

No idea how this place got a 4.5 rating. Like another reviewer stated, the miso soup is basically water! How do you mess up miso soup!!!? I ordered a rainbow roll which stated it had “crab” not imitation crab in it so for $14/roll, I got imitation crab. I also ordered “king crab” dumplings, which also had no taste. It was a mince of some sort, no actual crab in them at all. Crab Rangoons also tasteless. The dipping sauce for the dumplings tasted of plastic as if it had been in a plastic bottle and absorbed the taste, the eel sauce also doesn’t taste quite right. I also ordered the shrimp udon which was the only thing that was actually good, expensive but good. Basically this was a total waste of $42. Won’t be coming here again!

Very disappointed with our sushi.

Didn't have a good experience first time going there. I asked for them if they could make me a special sushi roll and they gave me a tempura 🍤 that had lettuce in it 😒and the roll came apart. First time having sake 🍶 and it tasted like couple syrup never had it before but, didn't like that over all service sucked not going back 😞😞😞

A little disappointed tonight. Ordered $70 worth of sushi (premium rolls) the rolls were so small, consisted mostly of rice. This is not what we usually get here.

I had the Unagidon, as I consider it a safe thing to try at a new place. I was blown away. The eel melted in your mouth and the display was something I would expect at a $100 plate place, but spent under $20 per person. Will be coming back.

If your goal is to impress white people then this is the place for you. It’s clean and the food is BEAUTIFULLY plated. A good selection without over doing it. And the sushi is great. But the food is not seasoned authenticly and the sauces are just kinda right and kinda wrong. The fried selection is perfectly fried without salt. So perfect for the population of the town.
