The way they seat the restaurant right when it opens leads to poor service. They seat the whole restaurant ant once. Our server seemed almost bugged with us the whole time and we are a very low maintenance table. When we asked what she recommended as far as sushi, her response was annoyingly “we are really busy, everything is good.” Yikes! Message delivered. The food was amazing though. The tables are a little too close together though and the shirt of the server to the table next to us kept touching our food.

Update as of 08/2024 - the service still frickin sucks and the food is now meh. 40minutes to see the first order of nigiri is INSANE. Seating a table at 9 and asking for last call for a 10pm closing before they even get their first dish is INSANE. Nigiri that falls apart because of old rice that’s been sitting there all day is gross and not worth the customers time. The rice here is chewy with a weird hard crust (not in a good way). It’s far too starchy as if it’s been sitting in the rice cooker for many many hours (because it has). It leaves a lingering starch coating in your mouth. The fish is still solid but that can’t possibly make up for years of horrifying service and the terrible rice - which used to be takashis distinction. Add to this that the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting, and the decore is dated and dusty. Also PS - to the hostess - put your ugly knitting project down and at least try to take an interested attitude for your job. What a way to create a horrible experience…sushi used to be great but is no longer worth a wait and bad service. Old review (no longer relevant) - The sushi is great but the hosts are pretentious and the service can be meh.

Excellent atmosphere. Very popular (we hadn’t booked on a Thursday evening, arrived at 5:30pm when they opened, and still had to wait an hour for a table at the next door bar!). But definitely worth the wait! Great food, friendly staff, good menu.

I've been going to Takashi since it opened about 20 yrs ago... and back then it was kind of a big deal because there really was no sushi game in SLC. So... it's kind of easy to be "the best sushi in Salt Lake City" when you're pretty much the only game in town. And, you know, sushi isn't rocket science. All it takes, really, to make good sushi is fresh fish and a knife. Go to virtually any of the 5000 or so basic, everyday, neighborhood sushi restaurants in Tokyo for example and you'll get at least as good--often much better--sushi than you'll find at Takashi... at very affordable prices. I'm not an insider at Takashi so I can't say for sure, but my impression is that Takashi has been suffering from its own success for a while now. When they first opened up they had to try harder... because they were new and struggling and had spent all this money and taken this big risk... and had no reputation to lean on. But as they got more successful and got richer, they just stopped working as they used to... and are, as the saying goes, resting on their laurels. The sushi here was never "amazing!"... it was just good "for Salt Lake City". But now, it's not even really that. I mean, it's not bad... it's workmanlike... but it's certainly no better than the sushi at Tsunami on 9th or Toyko Tower or Sapa or Itto. And the service certainly isn't any better. I ate here last night and my server was kind of a odd-ball hippie type that seemed like he was on peyote or something. And how hard is it to have a current, accurate menu that people can actually hold in their hands and read and order from??? When we asked for menus he looked at us like we were aliens... and then when he did bring them over he said "Sorry but these are a few years old so all of the prices are crossed out and some of the items are no longer available and there are some new things that aren't listed". So... basically you just handed me a useless piece of paper. It costs about .25 to print something. And it's hard to imagine that they don't have some kind office space somewhere on the premises... where they do things like order food and pay bills and do payroll, scheduling, etc. And I bet they have a computer and a printer in that space. But I guess it's just too much trouble to update a Google Docs menu now and then and print a few out to have handy for the customers. But, I get it. For a small business owner... just starting out... doing a lot of things themselves... excellence isn't that hard to achieve. But it's definitely hard to maintain as you grow... and get older... and get richer... and have to hire more people... and have to rely on them more and more. Because let's face it. American kids in their teens and 20's are not the same as Japanese people in their 50's and 60's. And excellent is just no longer a word that I can use to describe Takashi anymore. The prices are high, the food is just OK, the ambience is fine but aging... and the service is average at best. And, well, downtown's just not that cool anymore... thanks largely to horde of homeless that have been allowed to take it over in the past decade. It doesn't have the same vibe it did 20 yrs ago when Takashi opened and Gastronomy Inc was still in full effect, with as many as 10 different, excellent restaurants downtown. But, thanks to it's past reputation, Takashi will continue on... making OK sushi... and making money hand over fist. And that's great for them. That's the American way. But don't expect anything special or amazing when you go there. It's just average now.

Takashi is my favorite restaurant for sushi in the state! The sushi is always fresh and they have some of the best calamari!! This is hands down the best sushi place in SLC and honestly one of the best in the west. If you’re lucky you’ll get Ryan as your server. He’s amazing and gives the best recommendations. Highly recommend the sable fish which is lightly seared and so buttery. The box which is an amazing roll with a mix of flavors and textures that delight the senses but there’s really nothing bad on the menu.

This was my 2nd time at Takashi, first was before my Celiac diagnosis. The menu names are clever, and although I didn't look at the GF menu - the server said GF soy sauce/tamari could be used on really any roll, excluding tempura, of course. Very accomodating! We started our wait at the Post Office and I got the Sex With An Ex drink - tasted light and refreshing and flavorful - definitely more than the name of the drink suggests. ;) We waited exactly the time we were told for a table, and when we were sat - ordered the calamari as a starter (made with cornmeal so if you're not worried about cross-contamination with the fryer, you can have it. Sooo good), spicy mussels with quail eggs (insanely good - we don't think we'll ever be able to have a non-spicy one EVER again. Might start bringing our own thai chili oil with us if we go anywhere else), the Salmon-Scallop Gunken Maki (a huge bite without a ton of flavor but hearty), The Mr. Blue Sky Roll (only reason the review was 4 stars - this roll didn't do it for any of the 4 people eating, it was bland and tasted a lot like the sesame seeds unfortunately) and finally - the Surf & Snow roll (INCREDIBLE. The roll sounds so different with the pear, but this was the favorite). Our server suggested a yuzu spritz cocktail, which I can't even find now on the menu, and it was delish! All the way great experience, great atmosphere, great food, great drinks!

Honestly, I didn’t understand why so many ppl recommend the place. The sushi rolls were ok, nothing superb about it. The $35 steak was below average. Overly seared, which resulted in burned marinade making the outside of steak taste bitter, kind of like eating coal. And it was very loud. I felt like we were in the bar - not a place I would choose to enjoy the dinner and chat with friends.

I recently dined at Takashi, and it was an extraordinary experience! The service was impeccable—attentive, friendly, and efficient. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcome and well taken care of. The highlight of the evening was, without a doubt, the sushi. It was the freshest fish I have ever had in a sushi roll! Each bite was a burst of flavor and melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The chefs at Takashi clearly take immense pride in their craft, and it shows in every dish. Whether you're a sushi aficionado or just looking to enjoy a high-quality meal, Takashi is the place to go. The food here is good. I have heard the name Takashi for a long time but didn’t have a chance to visit till last night and it was great as expected. The service was good. The restaurant is nice but it’s quite crowded. If you prefer quiet place, this won’t be a place for you. The sake we got was great. Although, as a norm for alcohol in restaurants, the price is like 4x of what you can get outside. The sushi was great. We enjoyed our sushi and the roll we got. The appetizers and dessert were all good. What is a bit unexpected is the soba which came more like udon.

No no no. My husband and I were visiting from NY and heard of this place to be “very good.” Uhmmm let me just save y’all. It was TERRIBLE. I’ve had ShopRite sushi better than this. The chefs seem to just be following a recipe. It was stale and disgusting and flavorless. The Philly roll was inedible. The dragon roll tasted like air. How are we supposed to be paying $14-18 per roll and the execution was extremely underwhelming? On the plus side, the bartenders are AMAZING. The signature old fashion is amazing. Overall, if you want sushi; go to the grocery store

I can understand if you have lived in Utah long enough why you would enjoy a place like this but coming from a east coast city like Philadelphia the quality of the food and atmosphere is something you would see at a regular neighborhood sushi bar. But for some reason this restaurant is seen as the nicest sushi SLC has to offer which is just sad… to me, I possibly see their success coming from their terrible no reservation system. Any good fine dining and Japanese restaurant would have a reservation system making it more organized for the staff and less stressful on the customer. But in making in no reservation system, it makes it hard for the average person to get a table here which I think creates this fake persona for the restaurant being something incredible and exclusive which it definitely isn’t. A restaurant like Yuki Yama in PC is better quality than Takashi, less money, And you never have to worry about getting reservation. I feel Takashi uses this reservation system as a business model to stay relevant because other than some special things like uni (mid quality) on there menu , they don’t stand out in that poorly lighted back street next to the melt pot.

1H20 between ordering and first bite, is apparently a typical wait time. That’s what the server told us tonight. We were 5th in line waiting from 5:10 to 5:30pm to get served quickly. We got in and quickly ordered drinks and food. Our food arrived at 6:45 AFTER I mentioned that I feared they forgot about us. The server pretty much told us it was our fault for ordering late and told us he would check the status of the ticket. Seems like panic in his eyes from a distance when he went to call for other waiters for help. The table that sat down an hour after us got food before us. Waiting for the manager to reply to this review and comment. Is that typical wait time? Is that typical service from the waiter? I’ve seen comments where people got free food and sincere apologies for waiting 40min on Valentine’s Day. I’m not only paying $90.00 for good appetizers but also good service. Besides that, the chefs did great and food was great, check was delivered promptly after asking.

I’ve been here so many times by myself or with friends. This place is one of my favorite sushi place here in utah. i love how fresh their TORO is it’s my fave fish ever! I would say food is good like 5 star! But the reason i put 3 Star is because earlier today, me and my friend decided to request a SPECIAL TORO ROLL and we specifically ask the server (Madelyn? or Fiorelli?) what we wanted in the actual roll. We ask for a shrimp tempura and cucumber inside and Toro, avocado with a spicy mayo and Eel sauce on top. the size of the roll are so small even the toro on top was thin. (the tempura are more bigger lol) i am not gonna lie that roll was bomb it’s really good! And here comes the bill, we end up paying $51 for that one special roll lol apparently our server was told by a chef how to price it out. in our bill it was so confusing how they charged us. we felt ripped off and disappointed when we saw it. it’s not that we can’t pay for it lol i always spend $$$$ to eat out in sushi places! we even tip our server 20+%. it's just the feeling that you got betrayed. they probably thought we did not know anything about sushi lol. our server did not even let us know how much will it cost us or how they will made up a price. we are still in shock that the one roll we got are more expensive than Nobu.

We love Takashi! Since we moved here from Atlanta, GA., several years ago - it's been our #1 spot in town for sushi! Sure, there are other places in town... but, there's only ONE Takashi! Their sushi is always the freshest, always delicious and the service is always on point. Their Panna Cotta is one of our favorite desserts anywhere and as you can see in the photo, we always get at least two of them. Make sure you order your dessert when you first sit down if you want one, the Panna Cotta usually sells out and won't be available by the time you're ready to have it. The Imagine Roll is a favorite, Willy's Chilis... anything here is good. Great cocktails too. My one and only complaint about Takashi is no reservations! Pretty much waiting no matter what. They open at 5pm for dinner, and there will be a line by 4:30. This last time we got there at 4:45 and luckily we were first in line and first to be seated. I wish we could make a reservation - if you come around dinner time, you'll be waiting an hour +. But, it's worth it.

Been coming here for decades. Fantastic fresh sushi import from Japan 3 times a week. A gem in Salt Lake, like no other. The only issue is how busy it gets. But you can spend time in their bar next door while you wait or get there 15 min. before they open, on the weekends, so you can seat immediately. They do accept reservations for parties of 6 or more but you have to call as soon as they open.

THE BEST sushi restaurant ever!!!! Their sushi is just out of this world. Very expensive but also very good quality. It’s worth it, trust me. Service is okay, they are always very busy, usually they have a line of people on the front trying to get a table, so I get it, sometimes it’s very hard to give all customers a great service when the place is full of hungry people trying to order and wanting their food as fast as possible. Some of their dishes take a long time to make so be aware of this. But overall, is a very good place to eat a high quality sushi!

The food is good here! However a bit annoying that they charge an extra $1 for gluten free soy sauce since I have celiac and can’t have gluten. I’d understand if Tamari (gluten free soy sauce) was exponentially more than regular but the price is pretty comparable. Other sushi places in the area are very accommodating and do not make extra charges for gluten free items.

Excellent quality and creative sushi and dinner items. Plenty of gluten free options. Difficult to get reservations, but we signed in and went next door for a drink. The wait was not too bad. Try the live scallop if available.

Wow, one of the best sushi experiences I’ve ever had. 10/10 would come back here again. My favorites were the fresh nigiri and wagyu small plate.

Service was ok. The water came without ice and warm even though we asked for ice. It sucks that they don’t take reservations for parties less than 6 and they still serve canned soda like if was a little joint. Sushi prices are not cheap… it’s time they buy a fountain soda machine.

In comparison to sugarfish (where we were last week in Manhattan beach) you’ll be like, 😩 ugh, this place is barely edible. Definitely mediocre to borderline not so great fish. The sashimi was soggy and the sweet shrimp not so sweet: Though to be fair, 3-4 of the fish were decent (anago, New Zealand salmon, torched sable fish). However, the rest of the fish was chewy, soggy and bland, including maguro, yellowtail, regular salmon, octopus, etc. The rice also wasn’t even seasoned like it should be. I expect my fish to be fresh and cut well over tasty sushi rice. Not every place can be yasuda, sugarfish, sennin, seki, morimotos, masa nyc. Really, I hate giving a bad review but it was super mediocre. But I guess if you’re the only game in town…. Fly to nyc or Los Angeles for well cut fresh melt in your mouth sushi over real sushi rice (who puts fish over white unseasoned rice and calls it authentic sushi??). Very disappointed. PS- immediately after leaving here, we headed straight to a Mexican restaurant a few blocks away to eat for a fraction of the price. Two dinners within 3 hours bc we needed to get the bland soggy sushi taste out of our mouth….

If you are coming from anywhere with fresh fish, California, or just anywhere outside of Utah I don’t think this is the spot for you! The fish was extremely mediocre. Otherwise the service was lovely! I would avoid if you are a sushi fan and are used to a certain quality!

This store rip-offs your bill. I always bring home a customer copy, and the actual amount was $65.59, but when I checked my bank balance, $66.59, which was one dollar more, had been deducted. I filled it out neatly and neatly. This is the first time something like this has happened in America in over 10 years. The sushi toppings were salty and tasteless, so I won't use them again. If you visit this store, please also take a photo of the store receipt you left at the store. If it was about $1, I guess they thought they wouldn't understand. It's very unpleasant, but I don't want to use gasoline to transport my legs to such a poor store. Worst sushi restaurant.

Lived all over the world and this is without question the best sushi EVER. Creative in the way he layers multiple flavors, taking you on a journey with every bite. It’s otherworldly. Wednesday evening- line out the door and 45 min wait. Well deserved success and SO worth the wait! Takashi is a culinary genius, this is NOT an embellishment.

My husband and I love sushi and we love Takashi's, but last Saturday night was on another level. I wanted to spoil him for his 30th birthday so we had our first omakase and my god. I don't know how but even the nigiri we've had before was exponentially better. Josh was our chef and he's raised the bar for all future fish we taste. Everything he prepared for us was exceptional and I truly could see and appreciated the level of care he took to creating the plates. From the sunomono salad, to the sashimi platter, to the unagi and torched sablefish, to the sweet shrimp, every flavor and texture was so balanced and interesting. He even got us to change our minds on uni- we've tried it before and didn't like it, but the uni he gave us was on the other end of the spectrum, so now I'm an uni believer. Thanks so much for such a wonderful night and quite literally the best fish of our lives. Also, if you've never had omakase and you love more authentic nigiri/ sashimi, just do it. Cost wise it wasn't that much more expensive for how much we ordered vs the insane level of quality increase.

Amazing Japanese restaurant. We loved everything we tried. Super fresh ingredients and beautiful plating. Amazing service and fun atmosphere. They had lots of options for various dietary restrictions (vegan, vegetarian, Gf, etc) I would definitely recommend.

The best sushi in Salt Lake City hands down. The fish is super fresh. The quality is the best. The food is very similar to what you’d get in Japan. My go to spot. It’s best to go 15 minutes before they open or make a reservation for 6 people or greater. They don’t take reservations for groups less than 6 people.

My husband and I visited this restaurant for the first time on Valentine's Day, arriving at 5:20 pm to find a long line already formed. Despite the wait, we were seated shortly before 7 pm, and the service and food made it all worthwhile. The fusion of flavors on both the sushi and kitchen menus was exceptional, with the Sunshine Roll standing out as our favorite. Though we enjoyed surf and turf dish, we did experience a 40-minute wait for it. However, the manager handled the situation graciously, offering to comp the dish from our bill, which left us pleased with the resolution. We look forward to returning to try more of the menu and wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Japanese cuisine.

Incredible food and would highly recommend. I've been to a lot of sushi places here in Utah and this is definitely the best one. Also a contender with best sushi I have ever had. The torched sablefish, wagyu nukumaki, salmon scallop gunkan maki were all incredible. Also hard to go wrong with any of the speciality rolls and really anything else you try here. The service was also great, a little slow but that is to be expected with a place this busy and it almost is a good thing as you can relax and take your time to enjoy the food. We spent 1 hour and 45 minutes and it was really great. Also a note is that I think as of recently (at least as of 2/18/24) the doors open at 5:00pm on Saturday rather than 5:30. Google hasn't quite updated yet as of today, but we got in line at 4:25pm and were 2nd in line. By 4:45 the line was half way down the block. I think you would have had to get in line by 4:40-4:45 to have gotten a spot right when the doors opened. Totally worth it :)

I'm not really sure why this restaurant is highly rated. Perhaps if you get Nigiri or Sashimi it's good. My husband and I ordered sushi rolls. Takashi didn't have anything straightforward, like a plain salmon roll or tuna roll (of if they did, it was impossible to tell because it was so difficult to look at the online menu). The only roll choices were over-the-top specialty rolls that obscure the fish. All I can say is that the rolls were really bad. Before we ate I was already irritated because there wasn't a paper menu. There was a QR code on the table that linked to Takashi's website where there isn't one menu page but many menu pages. It was so difficult to use. A paper menu is a straightforward, simple technology that makes the dining experience pleasant. Use it!

I hadn’t been to Takashi in years and was finally back in town. We asked our server Ashley to bring out the whole gamut and she was incredible. She just kept bringing out incredible pieces and we just kept going. She introduced us to fish we’ve never had and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Three cheers for Ashley and three cheers for Takashi. The best sushi ever!
