I came here randomly one night with my teen age daughter .From what I could see they have interesting vegetarian options .They are conscious about allergies .The people who waited on us were nice, polite and checked with us again about allergies. As far as food ,what I ate was definitely different in a good way .flavorful but not overpowering. My mock tail was a little bit watered down .This is definitely a nice place for a date night and there is outdoor seating .I am interested in coming back again to try other items on the menu

Great service and atmosphere. Every single dish was delicious, we had the Manchego, blistered shishitos, pot de crème, roasted coliflower with red mole sauce and our favorites Grilled Spanish prawns and Flat iron steak. 5 out of 5 in presentation. We love the place, definitely going back to try new dishes.

Absolutely phenomenal food. We had the seafood paella, grilled shrimp, anchovies in lemon, and a lamb burger. Every item was cooked to the perfect done -ness and the flavors were vibrant and exceptional. For drinks, I highly recommend their cocktail with mezcal, mango, honey, and chili. It was smoky and sweet with a spicy kick that came in afterwards. One of the best cocktails I've had in Boston.

Tres Gatos automatically adds a 5% Kitchen Tip to the Subtotal, which also gets taxed at 7%. The artificially inflated subtotal and tax creates extra steps for the guest to determine a fair Server Tip. If the restaurant’s philosophy is to close the wage gap between FOH and BOH, then it is management’s responsibility to adjust food and drink prices to better compensate kitchen. You can’t have it both ways— pretty menu prices and your guests getting slammed with a 5% hike on their tab to pay kitchen (which guests also pay another 7% on for MA sales and meals tax). Unfortunately, as a guest, in order to respect the restaurant’s philosophy and approach, the 5% kitchen tip came at the expense of the servers’ standard 20% tip. To management— legal or not, one can interpret this as a form of server wage theft. Aside from that, food was good, but portions were smaller than excepted, even for a tapas place. The dining room was cramped and hot with seemingly no AC. Normal casual service.

Lovely place right in JP for a Spanish tapas without having to go downtown if you live in the area. All the food is great including the patatas bravas drink selection. There’s also a store down below! Smaller space so definitely gets crowded. Reservations are always helpful and the patio was cute in the summer.

We went to Tres Gatos for dinner and we sat on the front patio. Luckily, we were able to get the larger table with comfortable chairs. I would have hated to sit at one of the smaller tables with those very uncomfortable chairs. The service was friendly and the food was satisfactory, but there's more to a dining experience than just those aspects. Trust in the recommendations given by your server and value for money are very important. There are a few things that really influence this review. Firstly, the pricing is way too high for what you are getting. I've eaten in Michelin-starred restaurants for less. The busboy asked if we wanted some bread, suggesting it would be good for soaking up the nice flavors from the mussels. Next thing we know, we're charged $8 for two slices of bread—that's outrageous. Having been to Spain three times, I can say that this cuisine is far from authentic and virtually carries no similarities beyond the names on the menu. Here's the kicker: I didn't understand what the 5% charge on my bill was for until after I tipped. When I opened the menu again, I saw they were charging 5% to give their kitchen staff a salary increase. Is this not the most insane thing you have ever heard of? Why am I paying for the kitchen staff's salary increase? You're the owner, you're already charging exorbitant prices—pay your employees properly and don't place this scam on your clients. That is absolutely absurd. Needless to say, I won't be dining here again in any hurry. It's definitely not worth it and very disappointing.

If you're searching for authentic Spanish cuisine, look elsewhere! This place is a complete letdown. They served shrimp instead of prawns, got my wine order wrong, and when they finally fixed it, the wine was from the dregs of the bottle, filled with cork residue. They prey on customers' ignorance about real Spanish food. They've even removed their only decent dish, the ceviche. If they're still open, avoid this place at all costs—overpriced, tiny portions, and extremely mediocre service.

Tres Gatos in Boston is a delightful gem for anyone who enjoys a vibrant dining experience paired with unique cultural touches. From the moment we arrived without reservations, the staff was incredibly accommodating, ensuring we felt welcomed and comfortable. While waiting for our table, we had the pleasure of exploring the quaint book and vinyl store at the back of the restaurant. It's a cozy spot where you can sip on drinks and immerse yourself in a treasure trove of literature and music. The food and drinks at Tres Gatos were absolutely delicious. A standout for me was the Spanish prawns—perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. For drinks, the "Kitty’s Got Claws" was a real treat, striking the right balance of zest and kick. The overall atmosphere, combined with the attentive and friendly staff, made our dining experience truly memorable. I highly recommend Tres Gatos for an evening of delectable food, refreshing drinks, and a unique cultural twist that’s hard to find anywhere else.

This is the best restaurant in Boston. In fact, I struggle to think of a restaurant anywhere that both wows and welcomes me like Tres Gatos. Great food is wonderful on its own, but it’s the creativity in their food that sets Tres Gatos apart. Every time I’ve been, I find a new flavor or new approach that proves that cooking is, at its core, an art. The service is second to none, and uniquely so. Everyone is, and I can’t stress this enough, real!!! It’s such a rare combination of truly excellent service, but also genuineness. There is no script, no unnecessary manners or customs. Your first time here it feels like you’re a regular. That combined with the dining room having a homey feel (in no small part due to being in a repurposed home) has made Tres Gatos one of, if not my favorite dining experience ever. Congratulations on and thank you for creating something special. We appreciate it. :)

Outstanding bartender! I’ve been a bit disappointed lately when I go into high-end cocktail bars, and they don’t have ingredients I need for making my favorite drinks. Not only was this bartender excellent and knowledgeable, but as I was naming my favorite drink, he knew it, and he loved it as well. I ordered off the menu though, and enjoyed the “kitty’s got claws” because I am a big Mezcal fan and it looked interesting. It was beautifully balanced. Then I saw him making what I thought was a corpse reviver, and we talked a bit about that, and I was thrilled that he knew how to make one, so as I watched him making one for somebody else. I ordered it as my second drink. I know I’m supposed to be reviewing the food, and I will get to that, but a quality bartender, who is interesting and fun, and above all… Knowledgeable, is a very big part of an experience that has a full bar. Bravo, to this bartender! I only wish I remembered his name. On to the food. Interesting interpretation of tapas. Especially the cabbage, which was different than any presentation I have had before. A large piece, braised perfectly, with a creamy sauce. Patatas bravas were an interesting take as well. Often they are either too small with a bit of sauce smothered on them or they are too big and only spiced a little bit. These were a great size and they were seasoned, but did not have any sauce on them, which is wonderful. And then there was some romesco sauce (made of tomatoes and roasted red peppers, and usually almonds) on the side; a really great interpretation of this classic Spanish dish. (Note that a typical bravas sauce has smoked paprika and tomato paste) and I really enjoyed the romesco as a nice change. We also had a lamb slider, which was big enough for lunch for one person. So keep that in mind when ordering. It was actually halfway between the size of a slider and a regular burger. Also, the homemade focaccia was very fluffy! The rosemary butter is a good compliment. Atmosphere is cute. Loud and bustling and definitely not the type of place that is quiet and you can hear the forks clinking. Really great vibe. Wonderful neighborhood place. We lived in JP for years and raised our kids here and it was great to come back and see this new (to us!) restaurant in the neighborhood.

Charming, dark, lively place in an unassuming side-by-side on Upper Centre Street, JP. Small tapas menu with luscious morsels and plates, but we went with the paella (small) which was plenty for two. Delicious, deep smoky/spicy flavors with chicken and sausage. Started with a yummy charcuterie board of hard cheeses, quince jam and charred toast points and a small bowl of succulent, warm olives scented with cumin and anise. Reservations not available day-of, so plan ahead. Don't miss this hidden Spanish gem.

I want to start of by saying I love tres gatos— that being said, it has gone downhill in the last 6 months. Their prices were always more expensive than other restaurants around, the quality of food was previously unmatched so it made it worth the price. That being said, recently, the price has seemed to increase while the quality has gone down. Previously gratis items now cost extra while other dishes seem to display a cutting of corners. I’m not saying I won’t be back, but for an increased price you don’t get what you got just months previously. We used to get a full charcuterie board (including two cheese, unlimited order of bread, one meat, two jams, one mustard) for around $25. Now it is closer to $35 as you have to order everything individually. When it comes to the patatas bravas, they previously used high quality and thick cut potatoes- the potatoes they have recently switched to remind me of something you can buy in bulk from Cosco (tiny cuts of potatoes, gives home fry vibes). The staff (especially bar tender camryn) and atmosphere continue to be amazing, but the quality of food has gone down hill

TL;DR: Ambiance was great, service was good, food was bad (extremely salty, churros served raw). Save your money and don’t go here! I honestly can’t believe this place has such good reviews. I’d been wanting to try Tres Gatos since I moved to JP a few months ago because I’d only heard great things. Unfortunately it did not live up to the hype at all. It’s a nice cozy space with small tables and friendly staff. The music was slightly loud but we were able to talk mostly comfortably. Our server gave us good advice on how much to order, and we ended up going with the tomato salad, the lentils, the mussels, and a small vegetable paella (which was the perfect amount for two). The tomato salad was nice and fresh and I appreciated the labneh, but it was way too salty. The lentils were literally just boiled lentils with an egg yolk and shishito relish on top (didn’t add much flavor), and the only thing you could taste was (too much) salt. The mussels were good but basically just mussels cooked in a simple red curry sauce that could’ve been from a jar. But the worst offender was the paella: it was cooked in a tomato sauce reminiscent of marinera and didn’t taste like paella at all, it was way too wet which meant it didn’t have any crispy edges, and of course it was over salted (notice a theme here?). To make matters worse, the only vegetables in it were peas, extremely tough green beans (like chewing construction paper), and a few slices of radish place delicately on top (??). I feel bad for our poor server who kept having to come over to refill our water glasses because of the extreme amount of salt in everything. Finally, we decided to order the only dessert on the menu, churros with chocolate sauce, because we wanted a break from the salt. The chocolate sauce was great but the churros were completely raw on the inside (literally batter except for a hard shell on the outside). The worst part is that when we called our server over to send the churros back, they said, “Yeah, that happens sometimes” and immediately removed it from our bill. HELLO?? If you’re consistently serving raw churros to customers, especially at such a high priced restaurant, they absolutely shouldn’t be on the menu! The only reason Tres Gatos is getting 2 stars is because of the service and atmosphere. Even if this was an off night, I can’t imagine the food quantity would bounce back so quickly to how it appears in other reviews. Please save your hard earned money and don’t go here.

Cute space with delicious food! The positives - the food was really well done, great options. The drinks were also very well made, I think my mezcal based drink was fantastic. The salted watermelon drink was also great. The chickpea fritters were delicious, and the mussels were made in this beautifully made broth. The negatives - service and space. I get it - you have to maximize space and this place was BUSY. that being said we were seated in front of the kitchen on their high tables which would normally be fine but their AC/ventilation was just not strong enough to counteract the heat in there. Secondly the service - they were busy, but at multiple times they just forgot our order. We had to remind them we had orders that we were waiting for, which again, I get you're busy but I shouldn't have to chase you down for the food we're expecting. All in all a cute spot with great and reasonably priced food. I would say book the low top tables unless it's winter and you want to be HOT.

Have now been here several times and can review more accurately. Cons: Comically loud: The music is actually loud enough that their employees would have a reasonable OSHA complaint for exposure to persistent loud noises at work. Hysterically overpriced: $16 for 4 small shrimp. Mediocre food: Patatas bravas were like bad diner home fries, cooked to a crisp, yet still somehow brought out lukewarm. Brussels sprouts were...problematic. Pros: Despite having to yell my order over the music, the waitress correctly heard it and brought the items we ordered. Bottom line: There are many better tapas options in the Boston area.

Good food but limited list of drinks and wines. Mainly taps and small plates to share. Only paella is a large plate. The quality is good but the portions are small and you end up ordering more plates that at the end build up a lot your final bill. Tapas plate are usually very cheap … and this is the origin of the plate not small and expensive. Location is cozy and something different from a regular resturant. They sell records in the back of the store and music is definitely a big piece of this place (live music is available most of the nites). Outside seating available … maybe tables are a little bit too small…. But nice and cute set up.

I’ve been twice and my general feeling is that it is a nice place to have in the neighborhood but maybe needs some tweaking. The first thing we did was look for hooks at our high top. None, so bags got put on the floor. This is both dirty and sort of distracting because you worry about it disappearing or getting stepped on. It is SUCH an easy fix. The food is generally good but too many of the tapas come with bread, which gets a bit boring and you fill up too easily. Patio is super cute though and it is a nice date spot.

For my birthday dinner this year, my boyfriend made a reservation at Tres Gatos to celebrate. I had never been, but have had it as a bucket list place for many years and was excited to go. We were seated immediately, given a low table by the window which was perfect, and our server came by immediately with water and menus. We settled on a small paella and three tapas items (asparagus, patatas and garlic shrimp) and ordered two surprise mocktails. The food was delicious, the asparagus came in a sauce I couldn’t stop eating and the paella was beautifully presented and so tasty we ate every morsel! However, the star of the night was our server Cameron. He went above and beyond making my night feel special and celebratory, even making sure I had a candle to make a wish upon. Regardless of the food, we will definitely frequent Tres Gatos because of Cameron!! It takes a very special person to create an atmosphere where customers feel welcomed, seen and genuinely celebrated. Thank you, Cameron, for making my birthday this year so special!!!

The tapas and pinchos at Tres Gatos are really of excellent quality. In addition, a very good selection of wines. By Boston standards, I think the prices are very moderate. And then there is the special ambience with live music. Definitely recommended. No wonder that the restaurant is so popular and you have to make a reservation in time to experience Tres Gatos.

Really the best. Can’t say enough good things about this place that is a not only a sweetheart of JP but also my heart and belly. The BOQUERONES. The SHERRY SELECTION. The VINYL. The BOOKS. It’s almost impossible to find fault with the place except that it can be hard to get a seat sometimes. If you haven’t been, you’re depriving yourself of a, I dare say, formidable experience.

The place is cool. I will be going back. They serve food, drinks and in the back sell books and music. The service is great; five stars. While the tables do have pre-service setup (appetizer/bread plates) w/ utensils and glass for water… I was only served the later (water). I order the mussel dish; mussels were good, the broth was good too/salty but good. Drink was nice. Atmosphere is cool. Outdoor patio is nice. There is one in front and if your lucky or not depending on your perspective, is shaded and other tables are not. There is also patio (outdoor seating) is also on the side of the business as well. There is also a side entrance to where the books and music is sold. Still a lil type unclear of the purpose of the appetizer/bread plate. It is a cute little place and this the menu reflect this; the dishes are are few but do vary with cheese option appetizers, and a few others, entree and drink menu. Worth checking out inspire of some of the limitations menu-wise but still nice spot.

Excellent food and service. I really hate the surcharge for appropriately paying their kitchen staff. Particularly when it is a percentage also applied to wine which made up over half the bill and wasn't made in the kitchen. I'm used to being prepared to add 20% on checks in the US but these hidden charges for definite costs are very frustrating

Oh my gosh the food here was delicious! This is in my top 3 favorite tapas places I’ve eaten at in Boston. I loved the decor inside, small but a really fun atmosphere. The tortilla Española was my absolute favorite and the roasted beet salad is a must! All of the drinks were delicious and the smoked fruit in them made them a little extra special. The book and record store was great to browse before/after the meal. I definitely recommend making a reservation or showing up early to make sure you can get a table outside!

I hadn’t come back after having a very average brunch here 5+ years ago. But wow did this dinner completely change my opinion about this place. Each dish was at least 4/5 stars. The chickpea fritters were different from regular fritters, crispy on the outside with a creamy inside. The Spanish tortilla was a little potato heavy for my preference, but the pimentón sauce was delicious. The harrisa shishito peppers were probably my favorite, and something I’m definitely going to attempt replicating. We did not have a reservation, but arrived right when they opened and were able to get table service. Our server was excellent, professional and knowledgeable about the food. I will definitely be back soon!

Amazing! Been here a few times and it never fails to disappoint. They allow walk ins but the place fills up pretty quickly so a reservation is recommended. The bone marrow was probably my favorite dish but the shishito peppers are a must try too. Great service and environment

Great for adults, food is good, atmosphere is fun, our waitress was wonderful...... but super unfriendly for kids. Honestly one of the least child friendly restaurants I have ever been to. They didn't even bring our 1.5 year old a glass of water or a plate without us asking. We have a picky toddler and we asked them if they could serve her some plain rice, or plain pasta, really plain anything.....they couldn't adjust a single dish for her. They are either very inflexible or very unfriendly towards children. They also sat her highchair right in the middle of a busy area where the servers were constantly walking and one server fumbled when they came by and almost dropped a knife on her.....it fell onto the floor next to us instead.....just to say we are never coming back with a kid in tow.

Perfect vibes and fantastic food. The outdoor seating area is adorable, worth the wait if it's a nice day. We got the Lentils Casera, Albondigas and the Lamb Bocadillo. The lentils were by far the best dish just holy cow on flavor, would love to know what went in there to try and replicate on a night where I can't make it out. The Albondigas and the polenta, delish. The Lamb Bocadillo was the only thing that could have used some improvement — the bun to everything else ratio was a bit off, the burger was pretty well done (would have loved a medium at least for lamb) and could have used more aioli and onions/pickles. Will surely be back.

Small restaurant so make sure you make reservations the day before. They don't take same day reservations. There is a small book and record store at the back. The tapas plates are quite expensive. Decent tasting. The place is extremely noisy. Impossible to have a conversation with someone across from you since the placd is very small and over stuffed with tables. And you have to sit on your coats if at a hightop table. My biggest complaint Is that this place automatically adds a 5% surcharge to all bills to give to their kitchen staff in lieu of giving the kitchen staff a pay raise. Says so right on their menu. That is pretty tacky.. Why not give the kitchen staff a fair wage instead of forcing your customers to pay for your cheapness? Sorry, Won't be back.

Tres Gatos was on point tonight. The vibe is boisterous and hip. The cocktails kitty got claws and Pom cat went down waaaay too smooth. The three cheeses were amazing but the steak tartare, sea scallops and mussels were out of this world. Finished off the night with a 3rd round of drinks and the Churros con Chocolate. Service was also on point as they kept checking that we were good. I promise you I will be back! Go here when visiting Boston or a rando night out! You will not regret it.

There was a miscommunication and we were seated at a high top with a high chair for our 3 year old, unfortunately the high chair didn't reach the table. The manager was so sweet and apologetic, and she did a great job of figuring out a solution quickly. My toddler loved the meatballs. The other couple we went with is vegetarian, and there were plenty of delicious options for us to share. My husband and I loved the steak tartar. We will definitely be back, the service was fantastic and they did a great job making sure we were happy.

Nestled in a quiet JP neighborhood, Tres Gatos is a good place to enjoy tapas in a causal and relaxing atmosphere. It is housed in an old building, and the retro bookstore decorations set an uncomplicated setting that goes along well with the theme of the restaurant. On my recent visit, I got to try several pinchos and tapas, and most of the dishes were fairly good. I liked that they didn’t over-season their food, and seared sea scallops, Brussels sprouts, and chickpea fritters were some of the standouts. The playful integration of citrus in the Brussels sprouts was particularly enjoyable, and the Greek-inspired chickpea fritters were also very interesting. Paella was the least favorite part of the meal as it lacked the socarrat-like caramelization and crunch. Overall, a solid tapas experience with a couple of interesting dishes. Service was great throughout our meal, and while I probably wouldn’t travel from far to try them again, it was certainly interesting to learn what the tapas scene is like in the Boston suburbs.

I love Tres Gatos - wonderful food, plus a record and bookstore in the back! We had shishito peppers, brussels sprouts, albondigas, scallops, and tortilla espanola, plus the chocolate creme brulee. It was all delicious and made for a great meal for two. The cocktails were also lovely, I'll definitely have the Hawthorne again next time, if it's still around.

I rarely give 5 stars unless something keeps me coming back, so 4 it is. This place had succeed to hold a trendy vibe - The street is quiet, you walk up, open the door and wow it's a whole new market in there! when you walk in to this 1st level apartment-like space, its homey and party like at the same time. I like that The theme is - Tapas. Small plates, peculiar ingredient combinations like escargot on bone marrow spread on handmade toast should fit for an award. There are plates that I ask "where is the pasta to these meatballs" lol.. I love the presentation nonetheless. Appetizer is sampling of choice of 3, or 5, charcuterie boards - chicken liver, and more.. Main dishes are also tapas. Small, this dishes I find it pricey at low around $16+, high at $27 - $33 per dish. Probably won't visit on a regular basis but will definitely be back for a good round of the unique dishes when my pockets feel fuller.

A great and unexpected vibey treat for a Friday night in JP. The veggie food was 🤌🏻, the mushroom soup, the lentils, and the vegetable paella were fantastic. The wine is good, and spending an hour or so browsing vinyl in the shop behind the restaurant was a sweet little added bonus. 10/10

We had a reservation for 3 people for 6:30 pm yesterday. When we arrived the restaurant was 1/2 full. The hostess took us to a table with bar stools. The problem was that the 3-4 coat hooks in the front were full. So our only option was to sit on our jackets. We asked the hostess if she could seat us at one of the tables with chairs so we could hang our jackets. She said the tables were reserved. But we had a reservation as well. So we had no choice but to leave and find another restaurant. We were not going to sit on our jackets.
